Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them, they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with regular Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to captaincy picks.

Our trio of top managers will be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season – and only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in full.

You can read all of their previous FPL Masterclass articles via the links above but this time we’ll be asking our panel: what do you focus more on – form or fixtures?

ZOPHAR SAID…

I am a ‘fixtures over form’ guy and I believe that a run of favourable matches often ‘creates’ form.

When a team/player encounters favourable opposition, they are afforded more opportunities to deliver points, which in turn leads to increased confidence and an upturn in form. This makes sense, as most sides often place greater emphasis on winning a fixture against, say, a Norwich City than they do a Manchester City. You would see more attacking set-ups from managers and players would also feel mentally that they are more likely to find the back of the net.

Very often, teams from the bottom half of the table rely solely on the ‘easy’ fixtures for their Premier League survival so we in turn as FPL managers need to target these games, too. I usually look for a block of five to six fixtures when I make my transfers.

However, I don’t think fixtures are as important for the premium assets, as they can deliver points usually against any opposition. My strategy with the premiums is usually to stick and forget, and ride out the tougher periods.

There are some instances, though, where form simply cannot be ignored. I did a piece for Scout last year where I tried to define ‘form’ and the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.5m) and Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) exemplified this in the tail-end of the campaign. Previously bit-part players, they had been afforded the chance to shine and circumstances led to them having an ideal state of mind to deliver a high level of performance which, though unsustainable over a long period, was ideal for FPL managers to capitalise on in the short term.

LATERISER SAID…

I am definitely a fixtures guy. I’ve always thought that fixtures breed form as premium assets from strong teams will more often than not tend to do well versus weaker opposition.

I’ve done many articles highlighting the same where the performance of premium assets versus strong, middling and obliging defenses is starkly different. You can see the same in the data here.

While selecting my team, I like getting premium assets even if they have a good fixture run for three to four Gameweeks, whereas my approach is a lot more long-term when it comes to mid-priced attackers and defenders. I generally see these mid-priced assets and defenders as long-term ‘value’-focused glue guys and I like to spend my transfers on attackers with a high upside.

Again, this is very subjective and depends on the context of the season (you can’t spend transfers on premium attackers if they are continuously performing at a very high level) and you’ll need to take a step back and assess.

Form, for me, is a little less predictable than fixtures but there is a case for trusting a player looking slightly more confident or avoiding a player who appears the opposite. On this note, one thing to look out for is whether there is a ‘role change’ for a player in a particular team. You need to keep an eye out for these tactical shifts and try jumping onto these players earlier than the crowd.

TOM SAID…

I’m all about the fixtures, especially for my budget and mid-price picks, and often find that form is driven by it.

Bad defences can suddenly become good defences if the fixtures fall kindly, which is exactly what happened with West Bromwich Albion for a period last season. The Baggies were terrible initially under Sam Allardyce, which coincided with a brutal schedule that included games against Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Leeds United and Arsenal. However, they improved shortly afterwards once the fixtures eased, keeping a respectable four clean sheets in seven matches. That’s something I benefitted from with Sam Johnstone and Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£5.5m) in my team but I was quick to sell once the fixtures stiffened again.

Despite that, sometimes you need to ride the wave with players like Jesse Lingard. The form isn’t necessarily sustainable and returns are bound to dry up eventually, but missing out on these types of players isn’t a lot of fun, and at the very least, you should make a few pounds from it.

With the premiums, I don’t mind playing them in trickier one-off fixtures, especially if they are on penalty-taking or set-piece duties. For example, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) returned against Man City, Man Utd, Leicester City, Spurs and Arsenal last season, so there was never a reason to sell.

    How does this look???

    Bachmann

Quite like the draft especially the DCL pick, if he is fit to start gw1..with those sea of green fixtures he might gain that "essential tag" early on

4-3-3 is one of the weaker formations imo.

So a no from me. The actual picks are okay but I don't like double Liverpool defense and your bench is really weak.

My current team has 8 of the starting 11 playing away fixtures in the first week. Given the return of fans to the stadium and the prospect of fans roaring teams on, would you target home fixtures for GW1? Get a few early results, build a bit of team value etc?

    1. Miguel Sanchez

They'll just be away the next GW if you set up like that... just pick who you want irrespective of whom they play in GW1

Depends on the team you picked and the away opposition in GW1. Wouldn't be too worried. You're getting a team for a few weeks ahead not just GW1.

Very droll. I was more considering the fact that this particular game week might be especially favourable to home teams, with lots of price rises following early hauls.

Do we think Greenwood is being overlooked given the fixtures, his role in the team, the talent now around him and Man Us potential to really kick on this season. Seemingly going to get a chunk of starts too. Looking at fan forums this seems to be the consensus eg redcafe

I have gone Webster just because the way Brighton seem to be talking about him. Plus I have been told he is an attacking threat long term. Veltman the other option. Should play RB when Lamptey is out. But will then move back to CB.

It looks extremely solid similar to the kind of possible formation and tactics they spoke about on the blackbox podcast. Getting Havertz in shrewd move etc and a risky Jota.

My small issue with it is double Brighton defence. I would prefer Bachmann/Foster keeper combo for that reason.
And personally I would go with one of the 6.5m mids over Jota such as Raphinha, Buendia etc.
But if Jota starts flying you are laughing. So I can see the logical risk. Plus you are covered on the bench anyway.

An Olympic medal is an Olympic medal, regardless of which category. Would you say the same about a para athlete?

            • 9 Years

Huh? She hasn't proven anything about girls by winning a medal. Another girl would have won if she hadn't.

Same goes for para-athletes. If a para-athlete says, "just because you're disabled, doesn't mean you can't play tennis", then it makes sense.

But if they say, "just because you're disabled, doesn't mean you can't win a medal in the paralympics," it like, of course it doesn't. In fact, you have to be disabled to participate. If you're eligible for the competition it means that you CAN win (in fact, para-athletes WILL win); no-one said that you can't.

Or are you just suggesting that being a woman is a disability? 😀

Do you just not understand subtext? If a Paralympian were to say “just because you’re disabled, doesn’t mean you can’t win a medal on the paralympics” it would be an entirely valid statement of empowerment to disabled people.

It would be an encouragement for disabled people to pursue success in sport and show that they can enjoy success just as the example you chose encourages women to pursue success in sport.

The only one making this a men vs women argument is you for some unknown reason.

That is amusing alright. It is sort of an oxymoron, Saying gender does not matter for the achievement of goals. When gender is not relevant as they were all of the same gender competing against each other. Why mention it?

It is just symptomatic of the 'gender politics/feminism millennial generation' they just can't help thinking about it and shoehorning it in at every opportunity. They are about 50 years too late though, those battles have been fought and won.

I think it’s a little more complicated than that. I think what they’re saying is that men are much more encouraged to get into competitive sport than women and that her winning that medal shows young women/girls that if they have an interest in sport, they should pursue it and they can achieve success.

Just because you are a girl, doesn't mean you can't be into sports / good at sports / do sport professionally / etc. Agreed. Not what she said though is it? And doesn't take into account the context of using the gold medal in a women's competition as the evidence for the point.

I mean that is heavily implied by what she said. She’s an athlete not a public speaker.

I think she’s simply pointing out to any girl out there that might be considering whether to get into competitive sport that they could achieve in the way she has.

She’s a gold medal athlete that is a role model to young women everywhere. Maybe you could just let her have that instead of perceiving it as an attack on your masculinity.

Cresswell vs Digne is actually very close. I'd argue that West Ham are the better team so more likely to keep clean sheets.

Digne is more attacking and puts more crosses in. They both have a share of corners/setpieces - Digne again edges Cresswell a bit because of Siggy being out. Baseline bonus also minorly favors Digne but Digne is also more prone to getting cards.

Fixtures for the two are sort of comparable as well. West Ham's start is good.

So why is everyone picking Digne over Cresswell? Should be much closer imo.

Why pick Cresswell over Coufal when Coufal is cheaper? Should get same minutes and Coufal is getting more and more offensive over last season and will probably be so too at the start of this season.

By that token, why pick Digne over Holgate? It's 1m savings too compared to 0.5m by going Coufal over Cresswell.

Cresswell takes corners, has great delivery, and is a bonus magnet. Coufal is pretty good too but no set pieces, not as attacking etc.

Cresswell has Coufal at 0.5 less that people think can cover West Ham defense points with some attacking threat, can't say the same about Coleman

Then why not Coufal over Digne? I see Digne in so many teams when both West Ham defenders look better in many ways.

I totally agree with all the points you made. I had Digne twice last year and regretted it so bad mate. Was itching to get him out each time. And like you said he gets quite a few cards. I would definitely go Cresswell or Coufal over him. Another thing is Everton cannot keep a clean sheet. Pickford and the defence is horrible especially when Allan got injured if you remember. Without Allan they’re weak in defence.

Prob because Digne might look a better CS bet under Rafa but it's an unknown for now. I have so far for attacking threat and possibility of setpiece action.

      Some reasons for me:

      - Cresswell tends to play LCB now and so Coufal at Wing back is more appealing at a cut price if going for a WHU asset
      - The squad depth worries me, with Europe starting in GW4 I fear it could have a significant knock on effect on prem performances especially if a few injuries occur
      - Digne has been fairly consistent in terms of returns over the last few seasons, Cresswell less so

When picking a def, I try to go for long term and use FTs in the mids and fwds. WHU have a small squad and with Europa starting after GW4, I'm not sure how WHU will cope with multiple Thurs-Sun games.

Coufal at 0.5 cheaper who will be attacking in RB and RWB whereas Cresswell at LCB is less appealing

I agree, Cresswell flying under the radar. I would even say Cresswell is a better pick than Shaw. Digne and Cresswell have the set piece advantage.
11 Assists for Cress last season and 9 for Digne. both great figures. Shaw only got 5 which was his all time best.

Because Cofal is a cheaper option by .5 for a start. Cresswell does have an opportunity for more assists though.

Personally I don't really like West Ham's fixtures compared to the other options at the same price in fpl would have to find a defender rotation for gw.2 and 5 for start plus in my head Wilson/Newcastle likely to score gw1. Digne and Shaw are better picks and Tierney is .5 cheaper and very attacking.
Digne is on set pieces as well I think think that makes him a better option than Cresswell and Everton have a nicer run of fixtures overall imo.

How is Digne objectively better than either Cresswell or Coufal?

West Ham are a better defensive team, Cresswell had 11 assists last season and got lots of bonus. I'm just disputing that 'Digne is better' because that seems to be the prevailing train of thought and I'm not sure it's actually true.

Cresswell on corners and some free kicks so I don't think Digne can lay claim to that alone.

The bit that annoys me about Digne is that many in the FFS community call him Dean for some reason. Isn't it Digne?

I have went slightly different in by defence and gone for none of the 5.5 players. But I plan to get one of them Shaw/Digne maybe even Cresswell (more likely Coufal_ on gw 3 - downgrading TAA.
But Cresswell is definitely on my radar - solid player. But I just prefer Shaw or Digne in the pecking order.

Yeah I agree on Everton's fixtures. I currently have two Toffees DCL and Townsend. No Digne though. Not because I do not think he is good player it is just the way I set my defence up.

It's pronounced 'Dean' or 'Deen'. I know I'm making it seem like I don't like Digne, but it's not true. I think he's a very strong attacking defender and certainly a sensible pick with good history.

I just feel like we're missing a trick here and letting the fact there are two good West Ham defenders sway us AWAY from the team in general when really, either one might be a better pick than Digne.

As others have pointed out it is 'dean-ya'.
I agree with you on Cresswell though is a very impressive player fpl wise. Maybe part of it is that Everton are more fashionable historically than West Ham. I know in my mind I see West Ham and think middle of the road. With Everton I think potential. Given how West Ham performed last year maybe it is just my biases. Everton > West Ham might not be true anymore. Whether West Ham get Lingard again is another factor in my mind as well.

Stats in the last 6 matches of last season favor Cresswell and Coufal over Digne.

Coufal had higher xG, xA, more goal attempts and more penalty area touches.
Cresswell same plus some set pieces delivery with slightly less penalty area involvement.

      Cresswell is all set pieces.

Coufal is involved in attack going forwards.

Digne at his best is like a combination of both. Just need them to stop conceding so much. So I think people are better a bit on Rafa (plus WHU didn't look great defensively late last year).

Alternative is Sarr in for Harrison just to give a bit of variety. I like the fact you have no double up in defence except for Liverpool.
Your bench is very light though however as the season progresses you can move the cash from your liverpool defenders to elsewhere in your team.

I am not so sure on double Pool defence, but I recon they can keep 2CS to start a season. If they don't, however, then I'd move the cash elsewhere.
Regarding the bench, I only have one starting player on it, but at least I know he's 100% nailed to start.

Mané has 11 Goals+Assists in his last 12 games, and had a great individual finish in the PL. In a terrible season for him he still managed to score 176pts. He might be 0.5M overpriced due to his performance last season, but if he starts this season how he has played last 12-15 games, he will be worth the 12M price.

He's the ultimate differential. Clearly overpriced but he could smash it in those early fixtures and hardly anyone owns him. I'm tempted to pick him along with Salah for the first couple and can then move him on for Bruno or Son but it feels like a big risk. High risk, high reward I suppose.

For a 4.5M I prefer guaranteed starters. Fofana has a slight chance of not playing if Leicester switch to a back 4.

Looks like Evans is out with a long term injury. Fofana and Soy first choice CBs at the moment

This. I've gone with Fof as Evans is out, but on my WC I hope to get Meslier and a defender from Leeds - just need to see all are fit.

    Sanchez
Stones - White - Fofana (Firpo - Manquillo)
Salah - Fernandes - Greenwood - Smith Rowe (Raphinha)
    DCL - Watkins - Antonio

    £1m ITB

    Reasons for some picks:
    - There's a few rotation risks in there; Stones, Greenwood, ESW so I think having two strong subs (will usually be White or Forfana, will play Firpo most weeks) is needed therefore have only bottom fed with two of the bench.
    - £1m ITB to allow for upgrade of any position to gain early price rises and allow change in case of early point drops in high owned players

    Would welcome any suggestions.

    Thoughts on Martial?

    Cavani nowhere to be found
