Nottingham Forest’s 1-0 win over Leeds United is the focus of our latest Scout Notes piece.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

FOREST ON A ROLL

Brennan Johnson’s (£5.6m) terrific first-half strike was the difference at The City Ground, as Nott’m Forest claimed an important 1-0 win over Leeds.

The in-form forward has now been involved in five goals in his last four appearances, scoring three and assisting two.

In that time, he ranks first among teammates for shots in the box (seven) and big chances (three).

“I am a little [surprised with my form]. I knew it was going to be a hard season and at times I found it really difficult but to get the goals for the team is massive and for myself it’s good for my confidence so hopefully it keeps continuing.” – Brennan Johnson

Nott’m Forest have had just 65 shots on target this season, the joint-fewest in the division, while only West Ham United are under-performing their expected goals (xG) by more (17 goals from 23.58 xG), but their ability to produce 1-0 wins is notable (this was their fifth of the season so far).

As a result, Nott’m Forest are now unbeaten in five Premier League games, with just one loss in eight.

“We’re building an identity, we’re building a team, we’ve been doing that from the summer so step-by-step.” – Steve Cooper

Keylor Navas (£4.5m), meanwhile, had some debut. Steve Cooper needed to bring in a new ‘keeper with Dean Henderson (£4.7m) injured and the former Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain number one made an instant impact, making four saves and earning two bonus points. He was also comfortable with the ball at his feet when Nott’m Forest tried to play out from the back.

“Everyone knows what he’s done in the game in terms of decorated years and how experienced he is, but he still wanted to show who he is today. We’ve had a great few days with him, he’s showed fantastic humility, he’s really trying to buy in to how we play and the surroundings of the club so I’ve only got positive things to say at the moment. We’re delighted in the dressing room and he’s quite composed in the corner thinking ‘I’ve done that before’.” – Steve Cooper on Keylor Navas

GNONTO LIVELY

Wilfried Gnonto (£5.0m), who is owned by just under five per cent of managers inside the top 100k, was Leeds’ most dangerous player at The City Ground.

The Italian could have had a goal and assist in the first half and put up some decent underlying numbers.

He created five chances – more than any other player on the pitch – and also drilled a dangerous shot on target.

In fact, he was so good it forced Nott’m Forest into a half-time change, with Serge Aurier (4.6m) introduced, which in turn pushed Neco Williams (£3.9m) into midfield.

Above: Only Havertz has created more chances than Gnonto in his position from Gameweek 17 onwards

As for Leeds, they are entertaining on the eye but not clinical enough.

Here, they dominated the stats and played well in the first-half, but having mustered just two shots from inside the penalty area during the goalless draw with Brentford in Gameweek 21, created just 0.79 xG at The City Ground.

Not putting the ball in the net is proving to be a real problem (they have scored just four in their last six matches), especially with a trip to Old Trafford up next, the second part of their Gameweek 22 double-header.

Their away form is particularly worrying: no side has won fewer Premier League points on the road than Leeds this season (five), with their only victory coming at Liverpool in October.

“I feel like we were the better team. We were on top from the beginning and we created lots of chances. The first time down the pitch they get a goal. We are struggling to turn performances into results and we’ve been in this place for a while. It’s hard for me to accept and it’s frustrating. And I’ve got to find ways to change that feeling and find ways to get the results we think we deserve.

We lost discipline a little bit and guys started running all over the place. We didn’t stick to the tactical plan as we wanted to.” – Jesse Marsch

Nottingham Forest XI: Navas; Williams (Ayew 90), Boly, McKenna, Lodi; Danilo (Colback 45), Freuler, Mangala (Aurier 45); Gibbs-White; Johnson, Wood (Surridge 73)

Leeds United XI: Meslier; Ayling, Cooper, Wober, Struijk (Firpo 67); Adams, Roca (McKennie 57); Sinisterra (Summerville 57), Harrison (Greenwood 83), Gnonto; Bamford (Rutter 67)

As much as Martinelli is off pace, minutes risk, blah blah blah, I'm still not convinced he's worth a sideways hit. Bruno could be a shrewd hold with Leeds again and Leicester.

But I see you need cash and if you've held KDB this long you might as well hold for the double

I'm having an average season - so bruno to arsenal dgw mid seems worth a dice rill.

It's whether martinelli out for a hit is worth it

Good chance marti is rested for the Brentford fixture.

            Saka and ode surely nailed

Not sure Trossard is doing anything to justify starting ahead of Martinelli. Yes, risk of a 1 pointer if Arsenal haven't scored by 59 minutes, but until Trossard does something off the bench, I think he's nailed.

That said, I'm not ruling it out myself...

Leeds unlucky not to at least get a draw, though well played Navas. Luke Ayling getting more touches in the opponents' 18yd box than that other pony-tailed City player today.

Everyone investing heavily in ARS players for the double obviously hoping it will be a goal fest right?
I have cash and will move Andreas to Ode/Saka. Not sure which one?

Will it be the case though? Will these 2 teams not play a chess match with minimal goals, if any?

I don't expect goal fests in either game, but I'd rather start 'em over most other assets in the game in GW23, even if it's just for the appearance points and a return or two

As others have said, the triple up is a long term move anyway

Options have thinned down in midfield recently. Here I am, not getting Mahrez anymore: I'll just start Schar instead. Recently sold Salah and Almiron

That Cooper quote on Navas is heartwarming

Dude could have easily waited for some high profile move while getting paid well on the bench and/or causing a fuss at PSG, yet he chose a loan to a struggling EPL club to prove himself after winning many things. That's massive

      B) Ward>Leno, Stones>Akanji, KDB>Mahrez, Martinelli>Odegaard, Almiron>Saka - 12pt hit + BB
      C) no BB and two different subs

Option B also works towards the GW25 blank and means I won’t have to take any more hits to proof me.

People have been missing out on many points while fearing this, and there's a chance that his good run continues with those great fixtures

He actually has one or two possible DGWs in GW26 and/or GW27, so that's an immediate counterweight for the missing fixtures:

    Kane, Haaland

    (Ward, Mitro, Shaw, Bueno)

1FT. Plenty of £. Bruno to Saka was the move. Unless something happens Wednesday, that's off.

    a. Martinelli to Saka?
    b. Mitro to Nketiah?

A leaves me with only 2 Arsenal. B seems only way to get 3xArsenal but not a fan of Eddie's longer term prospects.

Ederson with a double, and City concede few shots on target so CS potential. But Ederson is 19th for save percentage so need to pray no shots on target.

      or

Kepa (whu) who is 1st for save percentage

Manchester City....OK, we've all just watched the match against Spurs. Which midfield option to pick KDB, Mahrez or Grealish for next GW?
I thought KDB was off the pace, Mahrez unlucky to be taken off, and Grealish was the best performer of the three. My preference at the moment is either Mahrez or Grealish, probably Mahrez.....what's other peoples view.

Just playing Mitoma and Schar in a 4-4-2, skipping City midfield entirely. Haaland and Akanji are enough for me, for now

3 FTs to get to 10

Schar + Shaw to Spurs + Chelsea in GW24
              Toney to Mitro in GW25

Thanks mate. Good luck to you too

About Mahrez: my main issue is that he was also taken off early in the last Cup game. Pep changes things quite quickly, and he does love to go cold on Mahrez very easily... That's what made me skip the move. Could be wrong and Mahrez explodes again, of course. I just don't have the urge to lose my other players for him anymore

I think you can forgive a bit of form for their value and fixture run (specifically no blanks).

I've got two and don't like any of my options to make it three as per my post above

I have the same quandary but didn't watch the game. Grealish seems to rarely turn performances into FPL points and KdB is probably a more likely starter in both having had a rest here.

I think I'm going Mahrez which means I can move on Almiron instead of Salah with GW25 in mind.

What to do here? Almiron to Mahrez? Toney to Nkeita? Both for a -4 ?

    1FT and £2.6m ITB

    Pope
    Trips, Shaw, Akanji, White
    Rashford, Bruno, Saka, Andreas
    Haaland, Kane

    Ward, Almiron, Toney, Beuno

    Kepa
    Trippier Shaw Martinez
    Odegaard Martinelli Rashford Salah Andreas
    Haaland Kane

Ward Gnonto Bueno Patterson - 1 FT, 3.6M ITB

Would appreciate your feedback on this team, was thinking Salah & Andreas to KDB & Saka -4?

Would you still consider KDB a better option than Mahrez? If so, those are good moves. Otherwise, I'd swap Mahrez for KDB.

I think I'm going to avoid City assets. Have just Haaland and no idea who to get. Mahrez could easily just get one game, defence is awful too.

Haaland should have listened to his heart and not his wallet/agent and signed for United. Joke decision. He'll regret it. imo.

What's my best move here? 1FT, 4.4 ITB.

      Team is:
      Kepa
      Ake, Trippier, White
      KDB, Rashford, Odegaard, Martinelli, Mitoma
      Haaland, Darwin
      Bench: Ward; Martial, Shaw, Bueno

      A) Martinelli -> Saka
      B) Nunez -> Kane
      C) Martial -> Mitrovic (start Mitro, bench Nunez)

Kane is having a fantastic season. He'd be 99.5% owned if it wasn't for that City guy. Go for B unless you fear the blanks.

I think Darwin to Kane is a high-priority move before even checking other options

Martial can be addressed in GW24 if he's not back, or GW25 if he's back

Martinelli to Saka will eventually cost a hit. Depends on the type of manager you are. I'm the type to take that hit for GW23 and just not look back, even if it backfires and Martinelli keeps starting over Trossard. My point is that it will eventually cost a hit because you'll probably want to spend most transfers on the blanks and doubles coming soon

Agreed with all your points. And to your point about Martinelli to Saka for a hit, this is probably the best week to take the hit since that might mean an hour more from Saka (assuming he keeps getting taken off at 60' mark). I might just go for a hit.

The plan was always to get Mahrez for the double but with Pep giving him a bollicking on the way in at half time and him being hauled on 59' it's too much of a risk right?

Not much else out there if you already have three Arsenal. Maybe Mitoma, but he's missing GW25.

I did Almiron to Mahrez with my FT fwiw.

Grealish looks like a better option to start but all he does is hits the ball by a player and dangles a leg out to get taken down. Other than that he is pretty impotent.
