We continue to assess the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Gameweek 26 in our Scout Notes series.

Here, we focus on Liverpool v Manchester United.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data from every single Premier League fixture.

SALAH, DARWIN + GAKPO RUN RIOT

Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) starred in Liverpool’s stunning 7-0 win over Man Utd on Sunday, as he became the Reds’ record Premier League goalscorer, moving ahead of Robbie Fowler.

In a devastating attacking display, the Egyptian looked on it right from the start and served up four attacking returns (two goals, two assists) and maximum bonus, earning his owners a whopping 21 points.

Salah’s ownership is down to 25% in the top 10k, with many FPL managers on a Wildcard choosing to sell him ahead of Gameweek 26. However, Sunday’s display was a painful reminder of his haul potential, with an appealing trip to relegation-threatened Bournemouth up next, where he also scored 21 points in the 2017/18 season.

“129 goals, that is insane. What an unbelievable number. He is a special player. We appreciate him now but in the future people will look back and be wow, we witnessed something really special.” – Jurgen Klopp on Mohamed Salah’s record

Cody Gakpo (£7.7m) and Darwin Nunez (£8.8m) also scored two goals each, with substitute Roberto Firmino (£8.0m) adding a seventh late on. The former has now found the net four times in as many Gameweeks.

Jurgen Klopp’s side played with renewed confidence and picked apart Man Utd, with seven of their eight shots on target hitting the net.

“It was one of the best performances for a long, long time. In a way I think everybody saw how good the boys can be. I think nobody was in doubt about Darwin’s future impact when he settles because he is a real force of nature, Cody [Gakpo] plays in the most difficult area of the pitch against a man-marking side which is super tricky, but how he keeps himself on his feet there and has the overview of everybody else, Mo is Mo [Salah].

Harvey [Elliott] played a top game the other night against Wolves, had the highest counter-pressing outcome of any player in the Premier League this season so if that is not a qualification for starting again then I don’t know one to be honest, and is for us super important on the ball as well. Hendo [Henderson] didn’t start the last game, what a performance tonight, absolutely incredible, and Fab [Fabinho] is back. Last line is in a better moment as well so it’s like it has to be. How I said, we have to make these results count with the result of the next game. That’s what we try.” – Jurgen Klopp

“A few months ago everyone thought it was a good moment to play Liverpool – you can’t say it publicly but everyone thought it – because they felt we were struggling a lot but now it is less of a good moment, we look much more like ourselves.  It is important that everyone knows we are here and we are still alive.” – Jurgen Klopp

FIVE CLEAN SHEETS IN A ROW

Sunday’s win was Liverpool’s fourth in five league games. They have also kept five straight clean sheets. It’s perhaps a bit too soon to say they are ‘back’ defensively. After all, they have conceded 10 Opta-defined ‘big chances’ from Gameweek 23 onwards and were hammered at home by Real Madrid recently.

Still, they are moving in the right direction again, and it’s worth noting Man Utd had previously scored in each of their last 15 Premier League games.

Andrew Robertson (£6.8m) was particularly impressive. He provided the assist for Gakpo’s opener, created three chances and regularly got forward on the overlap.

“Good! Look, that’s a top situation. I think everybody saw how good Kostas [Tsimikas] is in the last game, he had a real impact and set up a super goal. But Robbo is Robbo and he had now 90 minutes’ break and I thought he benefitted from that today. It was a top performance, like really a flying Scotsman performance!” – Jurgen Klopp on Andrew Robertson

The result sees Liverpool move above Newcastle United into fifth place in the Premier League, albeit having played a game more than Eddie Howe’s side.

UNITED SUFFER NIGHTMARE AFTERNOON

Man Utd had come into the game on an 11-game unbeaten run, but were blown away by Liverpool in the second half.

They did have chances in the opening 45 minutes, with Bruno Fernandes (£9.8m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.3m) – via an excellent Luke Shaw (£5.3m) pass – both missing presentable openings, but quickly fell apart after.

They have had a busy schedule of late, although Erik ten Hag refused to blame fatigue.

“No, nothing to do with that because we can bring the performance four days ago, seven days ago. It’s nothing to do with that. It’s just about the head. We know Liverpool are a good transition team. When you are 1-0 down, you can’t lose your head and bring them into the transition moments. We did not make the right decisions in the defensive actions. That is unprofessional. We have high standards and that’s not what we showed today in the second half.” – Erik ten Hag

There is no doubt United are a much, much better side under ten Hag, yet they have now conceded six and seven goals in away games against last season’s top two, as well as three at current leaders Arsenal, highlighting their defensive issues when they come up against top sides.

Next up for United is Thursday’s UEFA Europa League meeting with Real Betis, which is followed by a match against Southampton in Gameweek 27. A blank follows (they play Fulham in the FA Cup), before they ‘double’ in Gameweek 29.

“I don’t have an explanation. In the first half we were quite in control. Second half at the start we gave two goals away. There was no team anymore. We didn’t stick to the plan. There were 11 individuals. I don’t know, it’s really bad. I have given my opinion [to the players]. It was unprofessional. You always have to stick together as a team. We didn’t do that. There was no discipline. You have can setbacks but you have to stick together and do your job.

We made the wrong decisions. That for me is unprofessional. I’m really disappointed and angry. We let our fans down. As a squad, as a team, you cannot allow this. You have to stick together and support each other and fight for each other. You have to defend. We didn’t do that and for me that is really unprofessional. We have made a lot of progress but you see what happens when you don’t keep standards. What I have said in the dressing room is that this is unacceptable. But also it is only one game. We will bounce back. This team is strong enough and we will reset and bounce back.” – Erik ten Hag

Anyone worked out how much their WC team has been outperformed by their pre-wildcard?

Think I got off fairly lightly. 35 points with Toney, Mee and Henry to come vs 58 points with Toney. If by some miracle Toney doesn't play, I'll have Mitoma coming in too so a Brentford CS would see me beat that. Highly unlikely but in any case, still expect the WC to pay dividends in 27 & 28 which was the main reason for playing it.

Anyone with triple Liverpool in pre-WC team will be in mess, especially if it had two attacking players out of Gakpo/Salah/Nunez 😀

Well MacAllister matched Gakpo so I only really missed out on the Salah haul. So 21 points.

With those Liverpool boys getting back on form, I’m inclined to delay wildcard… so which -4 looks better?

    A) Kepa Iheanacho to Steele Toney
    B) Kepa Andreas to Steele Mitoma/MacAllister
    C) other

    Kepa (Ward)
    Trippier Shaw White (Tarkowski Neco)
    Salah Rashford Saka Gakpo (Andreas)
    Haaland Nunez Iheanacho

Me neither. But I generally give my players 2 to 3 gameweeks. Plus saw that Bournemourh game in 27 and didn't think it was wise to move them on.

Fair. I have different timeframes for different spots in my squad. If I buy someone for the medium/long-term fixtures, then I would almost never sell after 1-2 bad performances/results (probably sticking with Iheanacho even as long as he doesn't get benched). But occasionally I might only need someone for 1 GW really, as with Trent filling the blank. Always liked Darwin so I wasn't entirely sure whether he'd be for 25-7 or a bit longer, but this also depends on the Toney YC situation

Just made the cardinal sin of checking my team points if I’d missed the deadline. 97 with Toney to go. Stupid game. Although believe it or not, I wasn’t going to WC but Bueno and Nketiah injuries tipped the scales, and my template WC team I came up with myself! Anyway, 24 on the board with Raya, Henry and Toney left…

Yes and no. I mean, we have to make some predictions to play the game. If it were 100% luck it would be kind of boring. But then if we could predict everything & there were no surprises that would be pretty dull too. The fun is in the in-between!

Yes, absolutely. I mean no-one could've seen that result coming. As Klopp said, it felt like it was from the wrong season. But I'm just so glad it happened as a reminder of the fact we are all ultimately playing a guessing game (and not just bc I held on to Salah).

It certainly was a headache but I have got immune to it in last few years. (possibly due to interest drop in FPL itself)

Now, I would consider it part of "fun" where you can easily fall in any category. One week, you brag about your score, other week, you get loled. I have never been in any of these camps(bragger or loler) but if you are part of one category, you deserve the other side as well.

As for advice, we are friends before deadline but after deadline, we are against each other.

if your using words like shocked and immature hindsighters then it kind of suggests you do give a toss. the general concesus on here for a week was wildcard now!! do it! has to be now!!!... and its blown up in peoples faces. you have to expect some stick afterwards if you did indeed hit the WC button for GW26

I can appreciate a bit of light-hearted trash talk done with humour and/or self-deprecation. But I don't really see what's so fun about 'I kept Salah lol at sellers' smug tribalism

the i kept salah part is the trash talk though? you want the trash part taken out by the sounds of it. I dont how its smug tribalism either. you didnt do the thing people said to do to do at a pretty vociferous level for an entire week and it paid off. your allowed to be a little smug. as online banter goes its completely harmless imo.

ive read that comment... wow you think thats a "rant"? i said is it time to sell toon assetts (becasue they do appear to be on a downward trajectory) , pointed out that a club who claim they arent owned by a nation state just had a court document in america read out basically saying that they were , and said i dont think howes job is as safe as people think because theres two massive names in football out of work with a joke at the end about karma. rants are generally angry in tone and longer than 7 lines

Currently 7 players in 28 without using any further transfers.

    A) Free hit
    B) Make 1-2 transfers and field 9 max

      I’m playing BB in 29.

      Free hit in 34 perhaps?

My season has been just terrible this year. My worst season before this one was 180k. Now Im at 1.6 mil and struggling. It teached me to appreciate the good seasons I had, try to stay calm and handle the negativity. Maybe just not to take the game to seriously?

What went wrong? basically everything. Went with Kane and Son at the start, no Haaland. Brought in Haaland quickly, but was capping Salah hoping to catch up what I lost. It backfired even more. First WC was a disaster. Darwin got a red card, Mitro missed the penalty. Yes it was that GW. No Halland (C).

Never got any lucky points this season and now I feel like I wasted my WC. Had a good team before this GW, but panicked and hit the WC button. Lost around 20p on this. All the 50-50 disicions went the wrong way this season.

    Im just gutted.

Rough with the smooth, need to remind myself of this at times too haha.

Try not to be to hard on yourself, at the end of the day it's just a game and abit of fun.

Play your own game going forward and just enjoy it.

A bit of humble pie for those self entitled deluded UTD fans who thought they were in the title race.

Freak result they say... Conceded 6 at City, 4 at Brentford, 3 at Arsenal and now 7 at Anfield. No anomaly, simply primadonas who throw the their toys out of the pram when the game doesn't go their way.

Let's face it ETH was never elite. City and Pool will come back stronger next season. UTD aren't winning the league anytime soon.

Thoughts on this GW27 wildcard draft? 0.1 ITB.

    Raya Arrizabalaga
    Trippier Zinchenko Schär Estupiñán Cash
    Saka Maddison Rashford Odegaard Mitoma
    Haaland Kane Toney

Already own Mitoma(C) for GW27. How scared would you be of only owning Raya & Mbuemo as doublers? Original plan was to get March & Toney but I want to keep Salah now. Am I looking at a red arrow?
