Scout Picks

There’s a very quick turnaround between Gameweeks as we get set for the final midweek Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadline of 2022/23.

And Scout Picks are already upon us, with the caveat that an injury or two could emerge from the remaining press conferences still to come.

We are limited to an £83.0m budget for our starting XI, while our bench is also price-capped after a reader vote.

GAMEWEEK 33 FIXTURES

Times given in BST

GOALKEEPER

Burnley's defence in superb form ahead of Double Gameweek 27

Lining up for the Scout Picks in goal is Newcastle United keeper Nick Pope (£5.4m). The Magpies were excellent against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, scoring six goals whilst restricting their opponents to just one ‘big chance’. If Everton do find the net against Eddie Howe’s troops at Goodison Park, the fact Pope has received a save point in two of his last three outings is encouraging, potentially allowing him to bump up his tally.

DEFENDERS

Which FPL players and teams top the xG tables? 8

Newcastle United have just one clean sheet since the start of February, but Everton have hardly been prolific under Sean Dyche at Goodison Park, scoring only six goals in as many matches. That suggests there is clean sheet potential for Kieran Trippier (£6.2m), one of the best creative defenders in the division. The Magpies are still inside the top three for expected goals conceded (xGC) in the last six, a period in which the England full-back has created more chances than any other FPL defender.

Pervis Estupinan (£4.8m) continues to offer a secure route into a Brighton and Hove Albion defence that has proven reasonably reliable under Roberto De Zerbi, with three clean sheets in the last seven. The Seagulls have suffered defeat in just one of those matches, so there is shut-out potential against a Nottingham Forest side that have scored only two goals in their last three outings at The City Ground. Estupinan also carries a bit of assist potential, too: he ranks eighth among all FPL defenders for minutes per chance created in 2022/23.

Reece James (£5.8m) was initially selected in this position, but after being ruled out for the rest of the season by Frank Lampard in his Tuesday presser, he’s replaced by teammate Ben Chilwell (£5.8m). While Chelsea’s underlying defensive stats under Frank Lampard don’t fill us with much hope, a reasonably nice home fixture against Brentford is on offer. The Bees have failed to score in each of their last two away matches, managing just 16 shots against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester United combined. The Blues also come into the midweek clash fully rested, as the only Premier League team who didn’t have a fixture on Saturday or Sunday. It’s fair to say, though, that Chilwell squeaks in by virtue of there being no real stand-out clean-sheet opportunities in Gameweek 33.

COMMUNITY CHAMPION

Each week, a member of the Fantasy Football Scout community takes on the Scout Picks.

The community member who beats our team by the largest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher and a place in our Moderators and Contributors League for the following season.

Boleyn Boy’s 81-54 victory in Gameweek 6 gave them the biggest win (27 points difference) of 2022/23 so far.

Our champion this week is Dunster who has gone for the following: Pope; Trippier, Dunk, Estupinan; De Bruyne, Salah (c), Joelinton, Mitoma, Mahrez; Jota, Watkins

The Scout Picks are 16-15 up on the community this season.

I’m using FH in 34 so Watkins looks good for gw33 & 35 and then sell to Isak for dgw36. That was my thinking anyway

that works, had been planning similar on WC with benching as 8th attacker in 34, but will just take Ollie for one week then move him to Jota for 34.

    Wildcard!

    Ederson, Iversen
    TAA, Tripier, Shaw, Estupinan, Coufal
    Salah, Rashford, Mitoma, March, Andreas
    Haaland, Jota, Isak

    Thoughts?

I wouldn’t get Ederson on WC. The rest looks decent

Ederson a funny one, instinctively not keen on premium keepers and he seems very 2 or 6pts - but if want City def for run-in then not terrible option for nailedness

Stones would be my first choice for City defence. Ederson gets no saves and lately no cs. May aswell get a defender with some attacking threat.

Stones is a tricky one for me. Yes, he now plays in midfield, but his amount of minutes is scary. Whenever Pep changes something in formation, John is always first or in best scenario second sub

I just think that they will have now a couple of CS and he is a most secure in whole team with Haaland and KDB, thats why he tempts me so much

Mine is the same other than I have gone Leno over Iverson (as am BBing in GW34), Solanke over Isak (low TV) and I am undecided on my fifth def (you’ve gone Coufal, I may get Lindelof or AWB or Stones, TBC)

    Kepa
    Trippier, Botman, Estupinan
    Bruno, Rashford, Mac allister, March
    Kane, Haaland (c), Watkins

    Raya, Saka, Shaw, Tarkowski

    1Ft 0.3 itb

The plan was to roll and do Kane and Saka to Salah and Greenwood for free in GW34. I now want TAA as well now for GW34.

Next week I can do Kane, Saka and Tarkowski to Salah, Greenwood and TAA -4. I have the exact cash to do the move now. With Salah about to rise and Saka to drop I am going to be priced out.

Would you do Kane and Saka to Salah and Greenwood this week for a -4? Then Tarkowski to TAA in GW 34 for free?

    I'd really appreciate any suggestions.

Could you consider Botman to Trent instead which might give you a bit more breathing space?

I know getting rid of Tark is ideal, but you have 4 other playing defenders. And could you then do Tark to Botman in time for the doubles?

Thanks for this. It is something I have considered. I just wasnt keen on getting rid of Botman to then bring him back for the doubles. But I suppose it does make more sense. I will be taking a -4 regardless to get Salah and TAA for GW34. It just depends on whether its worth doing this week or next is the question.

The -4 this week means I can get rid of Tarkowski for TAA

The -4 next week means losing Botman to then bring him back in GW 36

Is KdB worth the money over Grealish on WC (no BB34)

    Steele, (Iverson)
    TAA, Trip, Stones (Schar, Toti)
    Salah, KdB, Rash, MacA, Mitoma
    Haaland, Jota (4.0)

Obviously assumes clarity on Steele first choice.

Jota to Isak for his double

This is a decision from 34 onwards, just thinking ahead.

    A) Jota and Trent
    B) Kane and second Newcastle def

Which is the best combo until the end of the season?

B I think, because you can rotate that defender spot across two doubles (36 and 37)

        Thanks.

I'm on wildcard in 34, so probably makes sense to go for Trent and Jota that week, then switch. What do you reckon?

    Start one:

    A - Estup (nfo)
    B - Mings ( FUL)

(-Other 2 starting are Tripps and Trent)

Was on B until I saw the scout pick. Guess Estup has a better chance for an attacking return and Mings CS.
