Scout Picks

There’s a very quick turnaround between Gameweeks as we get set for the final midweek Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadline of 2022/23.

And Scout Picks are already upon us, with the caveat that an injury or two could emerge from the remaining press conferences still to come.

We are limited to an £83.0m budget for our starting XI, while our bench is also price-capped after a reader vote.

GAMEWEEK 33 FIXTURES

Times given in BST

GOALKEEPER

Burnley's defence in superb form ahead of Double Gameweek 27

Lining up for the Scout Picks in goal is Newcastle United keeper Nick Pope (£5.4m). The Magpies were excellent against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, scoring six goals whilst restricting their opponents to just one ‘big chance’. If Everton do find the net against Eddie Howe’s troops at Goodison Park, the fact Pope has received a save point in two of his last three outings is encouraging, potentially allowing him to bump up his tally.

DEFENDERS

Which FPL players and teams top the xG tables? 8

Newcastle United have just one clean sheet since the start of February, but Everton have hardly been prolific under Sean Dyche at Goodison Park, scoring only six goals in as many matches. That suggests there is clean sheet potential for Kieran Trippier (£6.2m), one of the best creative defenders in the division. The Magpies are still inside the top three for expected goals conceded (xGC) in the last six, a period in which the England full-back has created more chances than any other FPL defender.

Pervis Estupinan (£4.8m) continues to offer a secure route into a Brighton and Hove Albion defence that has proven reasonably reliable under Roberto De Zerbi, with three clean sheets in the last seven. The Seagulls have suffered defeat in just one of those matches, so there is shut-out potential against a Nottingham Forest side that have scored only two goals in their last three outings at The City Ground. Estupinan also carries a bit of assist potential, too: he ranks eighth among all FPL defenders for minutes per chance created in 2022/23.

Reece James (£5.8m) was initially selected in this position, but after being ruled out for the rest of the season by Frank Lampard in his Tuesday presser, he’s replaced by teammate Ben Chilwell (£5.8m). While Chelsea’s underlying defensive stats under Frank Lampard don’t fill us with much hope, a reasonably nice home fixture against Brentford is on offer. The Bees have failed to score in each of their last two away matches, managing just 16 shots against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester United combined. The Blues also come into the midweek clash fully rested, as the only Premier League team who didn’t have a fixture on Saturday or Sunday. It’s fair to say, though, that Chilwell squeaks in by virtue of there being no real stand-out clean-sheet opportunities in Gameweek 33.

COMMUNITY CHAMPION

Each week, a member of the Fantasy Football Scout community takes on the Scout Picks.

The community member who beats our team by the largest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher and a place in our Moderators and Contributors League for the following season.

Boleyn Boy’s 81-54 victory in Gameweek 6 gave them the biggest win (27 points difference) of 2022/23 so far.

Our champion this week is Dunster who has gone for the following: Pope; Trippier, Dunk, Estupinan; De Bruyne, Salah (c), Joelinton, Mitoma, Mahrez; Jota, Watkins

The Scout Picks are 16-15 up on the community this season.

    GTG?

    Kepa
    Trippier Estupiñán Guéhi
    Salah Rashford Mitoma March
    Haaland Kane Watkins
    -Raya Martinelli Botman Gabriel

Martinelli over March possibly only thing I’d change

Yeah that is one I haven't made up my mind on yet along with not sure if Guéhi (wol) or Botman (eve) most likely to get a CS.

Yeah initially I had that typed to do this week Botman over Guehi, but seen double Brighton then, with no Arsenal attack, so I’d do that

Replaced March with Martinelli using the dumb logic that he is the highest scoring mid (and ignoring that it's the most difficult fixture)

    Play two out of:

    A) Saka (City Away)
    B) Martinelli (City Away)
    C) Mitoma (Forrest Away)

    Thanks

Saka better in home matches, though City are short of left backs so he may do well.

Tough one, have the same dilemma with Solanke in the mix so prob bendhing him. One of the Arsenal boys for me.

Big dilemma, on a WC and will BB 34, bought Martinelli at 6M since the start so struggling to sell

As my other midfield is Grealish, Salah, Rashford and March, I have no spots left in midfield for a second Brighton mid without dropping Martinelli.

I could swap March for Mitoma but with Martinelli I can’t have both

    1. norwegian-forest-cats

Would keep martinelli over 2 Brighton mids.

If on wildcard would probably make the march to Mitoma swap also.

I'd do Mitoma in for March in that case. Or drop Grealish. I'm going Mitoma myself and just having Ederson and Haaland from City, mainly due to me not liking the game of roulette..

I am thinking of getting both in anyway... they're not bad at the back and it avoids the risk of being left with the wrong one.

Does it help to know that Steele was on the bench for the semi final while Sanchez played? If you were de zerbi, would you have benched your number 1 keeper for a semi final?

Eze - because Villa's defence at home has been brilliant recently, don't think they've let a goal in their last 4 or 5 games.

Am I right in thinking it makes sense to hold the WC for 34 rather than play it this week? A few price rises tonight, sure, but more info and injury updates might be better, right?

    1. Triple Free Bench Hit Boost

All depends on if you have Bench Boost left or not. If you have, then you have to WC this week to play BB next.
If you don't have it, then yes, I would wait to next week - unless your team is an utter shambles for this week.

Who to bench, and why :

    1. Marti vs mci
    2. Toney vs che
    3. Mitoma vs nof

    1. Triple Free Bench Hit Boost
      • 3 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

Probably Mitoma, just. Very tight to call. For me there is a risk of the loss on Sunday deflating them.

      1. Make FPL Casual Again
        • 7 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

Think ill go with Mitoma; ticking along but not really hauling, upside not massive

Marti has only blanked once since their defeat to City, Arsenal scoring loads in almost every game; game might suit his runs into space on the break; can see Arsenal scoring a couple here

Toney scores well against the "big" teams and away from home. A penalty and its 9 points. Chelsea have been defensive poor

    2. Royal5
      • 14 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

      Tough. Toney just

      1. Make FPL Casual Again
        • 7 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

Yeah was on Toney, but now leaning towards Marti, less upside vs City ...do we see Arsenal scoring more than one ?

Chelsea defence leaky these days, could see a Toney brace happening, penalty etc

        1. Royal5
          • 14 Years
          2 years, 9 months ago

True. Arsenal pretty much have to win the game so can't see them not scoring. All 3 good options this week.

    3. FPL Alaska

Between 1 and 2 for me. I would favor starting Toney because of pens.

Have I got the right defenders starting and bench order?
Trippier, Nico Williams, Zouma (Mee, White)

Really can't decide... maybe should go White ahead of Zouma for assist potential?

a for me because of chance Malacia doesn't start. Reckon Utd back 4 will be Dalot, Linde, Maguire, and Shaw. Even if Shaw plays center back, Dalot will switch to LB, and AWB comes in on the right.

It's a big risk, but for this week, yeh. To get him, I'd have to ditch Kane and Saka. I'm taking a huge gamble in playing Kane and hoping he benefits from a new/old caretaker manager second bounce against a tired United defence that collapsed against Sevilla, and I'm not giving up on Saka while Arsenal are still top of the league.
May well all change next GW in 3 days' time!

2nd in ML so took a risk that could easily backfire

    Kane>Jota
    Martinelli>Mitoma
    Fernandes>Salah [-8]

Good news is I got 10 DGW players next week and can roll FT or do Raya/Kepa>Ederson

I did two of those for a -4 (already had Mitoma). I’m right there with you!

Can’t believe Jota is my differential. Lol

Just did a very similar -8

Kane, martinelli, saka -> Salah, Jota, March

Probably won't pay off this week but sets me up well for 34

Done exactly the same. So it'll pat off massively

Anyone else holding onto Toney for the Forest at home game in GW34 hoping he’ll haul?

    Bench one:

    A) Rash
    B) Mahrez
    C) Mitoma
    D) March

Leaning towards mahrez as not sure he'll start

    Play one:

    A) Stones
    B) Shaw

Shaw I guess but CS seems unlikely

Thoughts on doing Kane and Saka to Salah and Jota? Thinking ahead for GW34 as well
