As Valentin Barco‘s (£4.0m) temporary exit from Brighton and Hove Albion draws nearer, his owners in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) have mostly been asking two things.

One, who are the best replacements? That’s something Tom Freeman tackled in an article earlier this week.

And two, will Barco’s price be locked if he heads out on loan?

How the FPL market works is a bit of a mystery, with no clarity on what the requirements are for players to rise and fall. It’s linked to purchases and sales, of course, but the exact thresholds are known only by the games-makers themselves. A look at the leading price prediction websites underscores the uncertainty.

There’s nothing written about how player prices are treated after a departure from a club, either.

Some have speculated that prices are locked when a played is made ‘unavailable’. Others have suggested that the rises and falls merely slow, rather than stop altogether.

With that in mind, we thought we’d take a look at past precedents for any clues.

LAST 50 PLAYERS LOANED OUT IN THE WINTER TRANSFER WINDOW

Here, we’ve listed the last 50 loan exits. We’ve also documented when the red flags were added, the price at the point of departure and the end 2023/24 price:

We could go on. So, then, a very long-winded way of saying there were no price falls after a red flag was added.

None of these players had the massive ownership that Barco boasts, of course.

A better example would perhaps be Joao Cancelo. The right-back fell so swiftly out of favour at Manchester City in 2022/23 that he went from well-owned FPL asset to Bayern Munich loanee in the blink of an eye.

PlayerClubDate of red flagPrice at the point of red flagEnd priceTransfers out after red flag
CanceloMCIJan 31£7.1m£7.1m1,112,751

The transfers out column doesn’t even include the 1,445,499 sales in the same Gameweek of his departure (he left midway through), as there’s no way of knowing how many occured before or after his exit. Most likely would have been after.

So, then, in the absence of anything official from FPL towers, the evidence does point to prices being locked.

This is only after the red flag is added, of course. Owners of Barco will be hoping that’s swiftly processed if and when he does exit, to protect against any possible price drop.

I'm picking him on WC if that kind of helps you
imo he is slot's favorite player after playing full 90 minutes

the only thing I see is a high potential
          maybe I'm wrong.
          maybe i'm convincing myself.
but he is a season keeper for me if he keeps is place in staring 11. points will come.
if he is benched for 2 games in a row, then I'll sell

I think the key risk with him is the 1 point appearances, because when he’s benched I think he’ll come on but it might be for 10-15 mins.

I think he’s slightly more nailed than Jota and slightly less explosive than Jota. So I think they are pretty even in my book.

I guess he is more nailed and more explosive than jota. i have both of them, but salah and diaz are the main strikers. jota is more like a second striker/false nine.
obviously we don't know much atm, but I feel he is going to play over 80 minutes in most games.

Genuine question rather than sarcastic one … he played 90 mins and was very involved. Why are you more worried about benching than you were pre season when you picked him?

My sense is he starts 70-80% of games for the foreseeable, something like that. Reckon he’ll get on the pitch every match so some 1 point appearances are probably to be expected

You could keep 4 Fulham players all season, as long as you never made a transfer. If you did make a transfer, you would have to lose one of them. I highly recommend the former course of action.

The players I expected to be involved in my GW1 squad on the last day of the season.

No Keeper (Got Sels who I swore to avoid)
    Munoz (Ignored)
    Gvardiol (Went TAA instead)
    Gabriel Got him)
Jota (Spent an extra 5mil on Salah)
    Nkunku (Uncertainty with Chelsea)
Mbeumo (A decent call so far)
    Eze (An obvious good call)
    Olise (left)
    Haaland (No Euros)
Muniz (A good pick for 6 mil)
    Mateta (Forgot about Olympics)
    Awoniyi (injured)
Havertz (Paid the price of not listening to my gut)

The ones to steer clear of:
Pickford (Expected drop off in poor Everton side)
Sels (Poor keeper and I still got him!)
    Man U players (Defenders)
    Chelsea players (Defenders)
    Everton (Defenders)
    TAA (Got him anyway)
Salah (maybe got it wrong; thought he was getting old)
Son (Poor second half of season; getting old)
Toney (Poor last half of the season)
    Richarlison

How many are there who plan to get a team based on what was learnt last season and then totally ignores what was planned?

Planning for next season when the current one has only just finished is about 50 steps too far for me. So much happens over the summer in terms of transfers, managerial changes, injuries, etc. And that's not to mention you don't know what the fixtures or prices are yet, and you don't know if there are any rule or position changes either. I'd rather go into the season with a fresh mind after a long break.

                    haha
only worry is I don't have slot for watkins
have vdv for this gw, then I use konsa more often.
may end up picking watkins instead of martinez. but I hope my forwards score near watkins!
tbh, I'm afraid of not owning watkins for that run.

I hope this is a better time to ask a few questions. Who do I get rid of first out of Son, Quansah and Barco? Is Son a bad pick now? Will Foden start?

    1. Emiliano Sala
      • 9 Years
      1 year, 3 months ago

it depends on your team. if you have extra sub defender, i would sell son. anyway you don't have direct swap for quansah as he is 4.4.
selling son to foden and use the cash to upgrade quansah next week is the best suggestion that comes to my mind

      - depends on the rest of your defence
      - No, it's 1GW
      - unclear as Savinho is training

Son is still a good pick, 1 GW in. Foden will prob start but doesn't make Son a better or worse player.

Barco going on loan but Quansah may not be nailed on. Wouldn't sell any if your 11 is good for GW2 .

    Some fantastic news.

I started with Leno, Robinson, muniz and transferred in ESR before his move from arsenal. Also had Andersen so soon enough I'll have 5 fulham players before a run of Leicester, Ipswich, West ham, Newcastle and forest.

Not sure if sarcasm 😀 don’t know why people all of a sudden think Fulham are some great team, their defence was bad at the weekend and bad last season. Wouldn’t want a defensive triple up

So are you not planning on making any transfers for that whole run as making a transfer would force you to take 2 of them out?

Inspired by a question about Joachim Andersen. What do we think the record is for most players from one club owned?

Surely at some point over the years someone has had 5 at least.

Presumably in practice the transfers will both have to have happened after GW1 as chances of owning ESR (or equivalent) and then making no other transfer before GW1 feels very low

    Observations

The big FPL accounts seem to have spent all their money and gone big in defence.

If Nkunku plays badly this week and Mbeumo officially becomes Mr Penalties they will have to use two transfers to get him in.

If you have Nkunku and 0.5 in the bank you are ahead of that move.

    1. Tonyawesome69

      WC4/6 should cover it

That’s presuming Mbeumbo becomes must have at that point. You could say this about anything. If Nkunku to Maddison becomes the necessary knee jerk everyone with 0.5m in the bank is struggling etc etc

It’s why (in part) I started with Salah, Haaland and Trent - means I’m not completely locked out of anyone.

So, I was all set on WCing for an infinitely better team (by the removal of Haaland). A team of absolute beauty. I could pick and choose whoever I wanted with ease.

YES, Haaland is the go-to man for the triple up.

Yet by just that is he REALLY WORTH IT?

Please, discuss. Think I may have to go without. Ipswich or not. The players I choose CAN ONLY RISE. ONLY THEN, will I buy the blonde machine of a man

Why don't you try a points prediction model for the two teams.

Probably get a more accurate answer.

Owning vs not owning Salah or Haaland. Not owning is more risky than owning.

A key point is the ease of fixing the mistake if it proves to be one. It’s much easier to sell Salah or Haaland than it is to buy them.

So I’m always going to lean strongly towards starting with them on WC and then go from there.

Think of it this way. The first return you get is now irrelevant as you’ve spent the points to get him. So for GW2 it becomes

Haalands captain returns (2nd onwards), ESR, Rigers and no captain vs

Solanke, Saka, Gordon and a captain

So in GW2 alone I think it’s a very easy avoid. You’d have to be confident it’s a long term improvement.
