Next up in our Group H assessment is Belgium. Regarded as one of the dark horses for the tournament, Marc Wilmots’ side will be hoping to live up to their billing and qualify from what looks a relatively straightforward first three fixtures. Up first is a showdown with underdogs Algeria on Tuesday June 17 at 5pm before the Belgians square up to Russia five days later at 5pm followed by a game against South Korea on Thursday June 26 at 9pm:

Road to Qualification

The Belgians eased through qualifying, finishing nine points ahead of any other team in a group that also contained Croatia, Serbia, Scotland, Wales and Macedonia. Winning eight and drawing two of their 10 fixtures, Wilmots’ side scored 18 times (though managed more than two goals on just one occasion) and conceded four times, with six clean sheets accrued.

Most Starts Thibaut Courtois, Axel Witsel (10) Jan Vertonghen (9), Kevin de Bruyne, Toby Alderweireld (8), Thomas Vermaelen, Christian Benteke, Moussa Dembele (7), Vincent Kompany, Eden Hazard (6)

Most Goals Kevin de Bruyne (4), Vincent Kompany, Kevin Mirallas, Christian Benteke, Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku (2)

Most Assists Kevin de Bruyne (4),Dries Mertens, Jan Vertonghen (2)

The Key Targets

Since qualifying for Brazil 2014, the Belgians stumbled in a couple of friendlies before recently finding their form. Back-to-back defeats against Colombia and Japan weren’t helped by a lack of domestic game time for de Bruyne before a winter move from Chelsea to Wolfsburg boosted his match sharpness. A draw with Ivory Coast in March preceded wins over Luxembourg (5-1) and Sweden (2-0) over the past week or so, with the in-form Romelu Lukaku showing he’s a more than able deputy for the stricken Christian Benteke, with four goals in those two matches, whilst de Bruyne chipped in with a goal and a couple of assists.

Thibaut Courtois – at 5.9 in FantasyiTeam – is nailed-on between the sticks and once again excelled on loan at Atletico Madrid last term, though with two goals to his name over the qualifying period, skipper Vincent Kompany may be the backline option of choice for Fantasy managers. Kompany is the priciest option at the back, though, and comes in at 6.2 in FantasyiTeam. Either Thomas Vermaelen or Daniel Van Buyten (who has scored 10 goals at international level) will partner the City captain in the heart of defence and, whilst Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen (5.8 and 6.0 in FantasyiTeam) look to have the full-back berths sewn up, both are natural centre-backs and could face a tough time in the conditions against pacy wide men. Alderweireld started just 10 league games for Atletico Madrid in 2013/14 and Vertonghen struggled with a calf injury towards the latter part of the previous campaign, suggesting they may both be a little short in match sharpness. Similarly, neither Vermaelen or Van Buyten were regulars at Arsenal and Bayern last time around, whilst Kompany missed 10 league games through injury for City – with one clean sheet in their last seven matches, some may even decide to overlook the Belgian defence altogether.

Axel Witsel is Wilmots’ preferred option in the deep-lying central midfield role. He’s the only outfield player to start every qualifying match and whilst his consistency of game time is unparalleled, he’s unlikely to bring home attacking points – games which reward defensive contributions should heighten his appeal. Elsewhere in the middle of the park, Marouane Fellaini, Nacer Chadli and Moussa Dembele will vie for the two remaining positions in front of Witsel, though not one of the three have impressed domestically heading into the tournament. Given that both Fellaini and Chadli started five qualifiers and Dembele seven, it seems there’s little between them in Wilmots’ thoughts, suggesting we would be best to look for more definite contenders.

Luckily, Kevin de Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku all look viable options. After appearing from the bench in the first couple of qualifiers, de Bruyne started the subsequent eight but despite scoring twice the number of goals (four) and assists (four) than any Belgian player, he remains very reasonably priced in FantasyiTeam at just 5.9 compared to Hazard’s 7.5. The latter looks to have penalties to boost his appeal but his former Chelsea team-mate could be the wisest pick. As mentioned above, Lukaku has thrived in recent friendlies and looks a real in-form option for those thinking of doubling up on Wilmots’ side, with de Bruyne set to find his way into many teams. Coming in at 9.1 in FantasyiTeam, we’ll be hoping he improves upon the inconsistency that blighted some of his Fantasy returns at Everton.

The Long Shots

Whilst the front three looks nailed-on, Wilmots has some intriguing options to call upon off the bench. Both Kevin Mirallas and Adnan Januzaj offer alternatives on the flanks – the direct running and eye for goal of the Everton man, allied with Januzaj’s trickery and ability to put the opposition on the back foot, both look strong back-up options for the Belgians to call on midway through the second-half. Mirallas was utilised as a sub four times in qualifying and netted on two of those occasions – in the searing conditions, his fresh pair of legs off the bench could still pick up the points. You can snap them up in FantasyiTeam for 6.3 and 5.3 respectively.

They may well want him, but Liverpool do too, and are currently negotiating with Barca for him. Barca aren't sure they wish to sell. Rodgers want Sanchez over Shaqiri, who they have sown up and ready to go through IF they can't get Sanchez.

Not sure either of you are correct. The club supposedly leading the race was Juventus however Barcelona clearly indicated that he is, has never been and will not be for sale. Furthermore they even claimed that not even Juve have been in touch.

Sanchez may not leave. It doesn't mean they aren't 'talking' though.

Sources are reporting that Liverpool are in talks with Barcelona regarding "several of their players".

Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre has been holding talks with his counterparts at the Nou Camp as he looks to add further quality and experience to Brendan Rodgers' squad.

Ayre was personally invited to the Nou Camp by Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu after the Liverpool chief made several enquiries about various members of their personnel in recent weeks. Their interest in Daniel Agger also appears to have played a part in the invitation.

Bartomeu along with sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta have met with Ayre and there are numerous options under discussion.

Liverpool have made enquiries/offers relating to Pedro Rodriguez, Alexis Sanchez and Cristian Tello and have registered an interest in Cesc Fabregas while former Reds' midfielder Javier Mascherano was offered to them by his agent several weeks ago.

Basically various combinations and permutations and plenty for both clubs to discuss. Whether or not a single trade will happen, we simply do not know.

Barcelona are interested in Daniel Agger and have also enquiried about Luis Suarez as a result of Real Madrid stepping up their interest.

There is more, but I'm just saying LFC are interested in him, as well as others.

Moreno is done. Ayre is not negotiating with Sevilla.

I need the links to the source because a lot of this is incredibly dodgy. For example, latest on Moreno being: "I have four years [left on my contract], I am dedicated to play and I'm happy here" Alberto Moreno

                Interesting for a done deal.

Second, Ian Ayre interestingly spotted in Southampton train station 2 days ago so very interesting that he's been in both places at once

                https://mobile.twitter.com/marnie_hud/status/474185636581486592/photo/1

I'm not saying they are not in touch with Barcelona but the logic of the statement that they're chasing Sanchez despite having the Shaqiri deal done is nonsense, utter nonsense. So then they could go after Pedro or Tello, Tello being a much worse winger than Shaqiri or Pedro who won't be able to play forward so then he's a winger too.

As for Fabregas and Mascherano, both are in fact hoping to stay at Barcelona. In fact both of these stories have been massively inflated by journalists.

Moreno can't say anything else until the deal is announced due to deals collapsing at the last minute like Konoplyanka.

Clubs draw up a list of targets. If one fails, they move onto the next.

I would never believe what the mainstream media say. Their contacts are usually absolutely non-existent. I'd believe, say, Portsmouth Bubblejet, over them any day.

As I said, I can't give you a link to the source as you need a log in and password. However, you should know me as a poster who is unlikely to make stuff up. However, I totally understand your scepticism. Still, I trust my source over all others.

I know you as a good guy and not a liar (although I suspect a closet Liverpool fan 😉 ) but I have to maintain high levels of scepticism purely because it keeps the transfers exciting. For example, say now that none of Sanchez, Tello, Pedro, Fabregas or Mascherano go to LFC then the eventual signing of Shaqiri who I think is a great great player will be lessened because there's a sense of "what might have been" instead of excitement about this top transfer.

Silly season brings the worst out in people.

For example Shaqiri (who by the way only said that he doesn't want another season on the bench, would like to play for a title contender and one option he has is to move abroad) being "sewn up" and then Liverpool turning around, trying to sign Sanchez and risking alienating Shaqiri is utter madness. Especially at the prices being mentioned, not a chance Barcelona will let him go for what the reported bids are.

And I'm simply stating what my Barcelona source (works in the club by the way) is saying to me. As for Shaqiri there are a couple of very good German journalists that have yet to report this as terms agreed. I'm not saying it won't happen at all mind you, I think it definitely can but the Barcelona stuff is extraordinarily dubious.

'Terms agreed' refers to Shaqiri. A club will often see whether the player is a) interested and b) what their demands are BEFORE putting a bid in. Obviously via agents. There is no point putting a bid in if a) and b) aren't viable.

The 26 million I'm referring to here is Sanchez. Barcelona bought him for that. Now as for Shaqiri, once I read from some of the BL sources I trust that it is agreed terms I will believe. I won't until then I'm afraid.

The impending plethora of World Cup matches taking place in the Federative Republic of Brazil shall be deemed by most of us to be nothing more than a football fan’s nirvana, one month and one day of paradise brought to us in high definition on our television screens. While the tournament is supplemented by an array of fantasy games varying in quality, we must take into account the effect that an extra month of football will have on those participating - and most importantly – those who haven’t been so lucky. Those who do not travel to Brazil this summer shall be at an advantage in early season, and should definitely be more strongly considered for our Fantasy squads.

    The Obvious Candidates:

Aaron Ramsey (23 appearances, 10 goals, 9 assists, 19 bonus) - With Jack Wilshere, Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla, Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain all on international duty over the next month, Ramsey will be firmly in Wenger’s plans for the opening games of the season and should be very much nailed on and itching to go.
John Terry (34 appearances, 3 goals, 1 assist, 16 clean sheets, 29 bonus) – Having retired from international football, Terry – unlike his compatriot Gary Cahill – shall return from the summer break fully rested to a Chelsea defence that many will expect to improve this season under Mourinho, with Nemanja Matic having settled in at Stamford Bridge.

Samir Nasri (34 appearances, 7 goals, 11 assists, 14 bonus) – Nasri turned in some exceptional performances for Manchester City during the run-in of their successful title race, achieving an attacking return in 8 of his last 11 appearances. With David Silva, Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero, James Milner and Fernandinho all featuring in their nation’s squads in Brazil, Nasri should be nailed on for the start of the season as a result of us omission from the French team. His previous petulance may bring us points as City look to reclaim their title.

Christian Eriksen (28 appearances, 7 goals, 9 assists, 20 bonus) – After a solid debut season in the Premier League, Eriksen will be looking to push on next season in an improved Tottenham side under Pochettino. You will notice how his stats are not too dissimilar to Ramsey’s, and with an array of set pieces in his locker he’s surely one many will be looking at for the coming season.

What other players are missing out on the World Cup, and as a result should be good early season options?

      Walcott, although recovering from injury.

      Serbia: Nastasic, Kolarov, Ivanovic, Matic.

Adebayor??! If not, then how about Harry Kane, who ended the season so well?

Not exactly World Cup related, but I think it could also be a breakthrough year for Ward-Prowse, if Lallana moves away from Southampton.

Ozil, for his central role he should rack up the assists with all those quality players around him.

Hazard, World class player who wants to prove himself for his national team.

      Ramos, higher goal threat

They'll never join English leagues either, which is what they need. Especially when the whole 'country' is looking at seperating from the UK.

Guys haven't been on for a few weeks.

For World Cup who is your fancy to:

    A. win
    B. top goalscorer
    C. best outside chance to win World Cup

If you bet £20 on top goalscorer Paddy Power give you a £5 FREE bet every time he scores. Not bad.

It is indeed, if Rooney hits form and the youngsters continue to play without any fear we could easily make the Last 8. Only issue is the defence, haven’t won a World Cup game where the opposition has scored, since beating Cameroon in Italia 90.

    Sun Dreamteam.

    A. Hazard and Dzeko
    B. De Bruyne and Lukaku (or if not Lukaku, then who?)

    Which is better?

Current team is Courtois, Cahill, Coentrao, Martins-Indi, Aurier, Hazard, Ozil, Shaqiri, Neymar, Dzeko, Messi.

Would be nice to get some advice from you kind souls!

6 of Candreva's 12 goals were penalties last season.

This articlemail, along with Applebonkers analysis makes me think I should get De Bruyn instead of Hazard. Do I....

          A) Switch Hazard for DeBruyn and save a stack of cash.
          B) Double up at Rodriguez (Columbia) expense
          C) Leave alone.

            Go with your gut, really.

Hazard is a class act but it's true that he has underperformed for his nation so far in his career. Things could change, though.

On another note, with the Rues injury it looks like my Muller differential has gone to pot.....
