This week heralded the arrival of inevitable price rises and falls across the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, as the Fantasy Football Scout community sought to replace their failed pre-season targets with the proven bandwagons of Gameweek 1.

Our community writers and Hot Topic posters were on hand to offer advice for those looking to balance the books and off load their flops. We look back on the week’s best advice offered up, whilst also recalling how the community was presented with a powerful argument against discrimination in Fantasy Football and, for the first time, we offer up a regular round-up of the very best of this week’s custom statistics tables created and shared in the Members Area. In a packed summary, there’s also time to check in on the early leaders in a variety of community tournaments and competitions.

The Community Articles

Gameweek 1 was awash with disappointment for those investing in popular pre-season targets such as Man City’s Stevan Jovetic and Tottenham’s Ben Davies. Luckily, Arvin-ation was on hand to sift through the wreckage of our Gameweek 1 selections and recommend some immediate replacements.

Defenders that are capable of producing returns away from home can be valuable assets for those looking to revive early fortunes. Khalad’s article, published this past week, offered up an invaluable summary of the best options for earning defensive points on the road.

Meanwhile, The Puntmaster provided his latest view of the best punts on offer for upcoming Gameweek – look out for these in future weeks as the Puntmaster maintains what looks set to be a regular series.

Elsewhere, AZ was on hand to present this in depth analysis of Eden Hazard and Diego Costa’s goal threat – a timely piece ahead of a weekend that saw both players get on the scoresheet as the Blues maintained their impressive opening to the campaign.

Finally, Lanley Staural was keen to share up his list of the best Premier League fan forums, often a key source of information, speculation and gossip that can prove invaluable when searching out the inside track on team selection ahead of the Gameweek deadline.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Members Tables

Over in our members area, the community has been busily constructing some handy tables based on the data collected so far this season. The Sarjeant has been taking a look at some of the most attacking and creative midfielders so far, with a strong focus on successful passing in the final third.

Underlying statistics of forwards was the subject of Nolito’s table, while key figures of Gameweek 1’s most transferred in players came under Kalix’s gaze. Elsewhere, Arvin-ation took a look at Tom Ince in comparison to other midfielders, as well as a detailed look at Chelsea’s midfielders.

The criteria of chances created has helped Mexycan pinpoint some of the biggest threats in the final third and I created a couple of tables this week, examining bonus point magnets in defence and under-the-radar potential goalscorers.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how these work. We’re relaunching this feature very soon, boosted by the ability to search, tag and sort the custom stats tables created. Look out for news on that soon.

The Hottest Topics

With so many heavy hitters delivering points hauls in Gameweek one, there was an army of twitching knees on show. I was quick to react to trend, asking just what’s wrong with knee jerking anyway? This prompted to take Hamstergod to take a humourous look at popular Fantasy management phrases, such as the knee jerk, the hunt for differentials and the “essentials”.

It seems that one of the most popular trades carried out this week saw Eden Hazard make way for the acquisition of Cesc Fabregas. Christina’s discussion hit the subject head on prompting much reaction. The Chelsea pair were also among the heavy-hitters discussed in BPLTeam’s “battle of the big boys” Hot Topic.

Meanwhile, the potential of Southampton’s re-invented assets came under expert focus from Lucy with her view on their progress. Lucy also offered an important reminder that there’s a growing interest in Fantasy Football amongst women: this proved to be this week’s most popular post with 65 up-votes at the time of writing.

BThomsen, our resident Norwich correspondent, provided another of the most popular posts this week. He’s been busy scouting their former player and new QPR signing, Leroy Fer on our behalf. His fascinating insight into his goal threat could present yet another mid-price asset in midfield.

The subject of FPL pricing, and in particular the value assigned to Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson, came under scrutiny from Innsie who asked whether so many would have jumped on his bandwagon if he was priced significantly higher? Is the pursuit of a midfield bargain just as big a factor as his Gameweek 1 form?

And finally the key potential transfer discussed this week was undoubtedly Mario Balotelli’s move from AC Milan to Liverpool. The prospect came as bad news for two of our posters, Berbinho’s Forehead and Rayne Wooney, who each pledged to complete an unpleasant forfeit should the Italian arrive on Merseyside.

The Community Tournaments

In Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing competition 1,586 managers were left from the original 1,673 participants after Gameweek 1’s safety score was set at 43.

In the FFS Old Farts Club league, for those of advancing years, Seamy took the lead after Gameweek 1. Meanwhile, Back on the Horse held first spot in the Puffinboy Memorial Cup, a league dedicated to one of Fantasy Football Scout’s first posters. ”The Long and Winding Road” main league is already emerging as one of the most competitive, with Irish Madridista taking first place after Gameweek 1 with a score of 90 and an overall rank of 142.

In “AZ’s Early Bird Cup”, Lunchogonzalez was the top scorer out of its 32 participants, with a huge haul of 80 points. This was enough to dispatch 4vets, who also notched up an impressive score, of 70. Other winners include Ashlie and Baines on Toast.

Finally, watch out for Tuesday morning’s hot topic when we will be asking for nominations and votes for those wishing to follow Tom Fenley and HVT as the community champion in Gameweek 3’s scout picks competition.

There's been a lot of poo pooing of Naismith, now and before the season started. He's been in my team since the game opened it's doors and made my mind up to play 3-5-2.
Another way to look at this is everyone listed their budget 8th attacker, Naismith at 5m looks pretty good I bet if you resign yourself to 2 big forwards.

As a Rooney and Mata owner, my stance hasn't changed on them one bit.

They've both scored in two games in what is a piss-poor United team in all aspects.

Mata has scored 7 goals in his last 8 league and Rooney has scored 9 goals in his last 10 games for a woeful United.

There's a week left in the window so player(s) will come in that will boost the performance of the team even more. Even if the defence still sucks, I don't see the returns for Mata and Rooney drying up just because they're conceding. Last year both played well even with the extra fixtures.

Now United face Burnley (conceded 4), QPR (conceded 5), Leicester (conceded 4) in their next 3 followed by home games against West Ham and Everton then away to West Brom. Where does all this ditching Mata and Rooney talk come from?

But these signings coming in and players getting fit are more likely to displace Mata than improve him. His purple patch was in a mediocre Chelsea side. Mou got rid for a reason.

Why are you so anti Mata? 😕 Just because you don't have him?

His position will surely not change and no players coming in would displace Mata.

And I did hear LVG's post match interview and I in no way can understand how is Mata at risk from his comments.

No top side can afford to run him out every week. Complete passenger.

LVG was very upset with "how slow moved the ball forward" today. If that's not a blot on Mata I don't know what is.

Really? How did you decipher that he was referring to Mata? Could well have been Fletcher for example. And if mata was that bad then why didn't he take him off?

It's not Fletcher's job to drive the team forward. That's the job of the #10, you know the playmaker, to drive us forward. Pretty obvious.

Given the option LVG would've used every sub today. And had Smalling not been injured I'm almost certain he would've taken Mata off for Kagawa. The fact that he resorted to Januzaj behind Mata in CM in a desperate attempt to drive us forward is damning.

How would you compare him to Sneijder in the Netherlands NT?

I'm not a fan of Mata myself, but I really doubt that he can't get back to a higher level and play in a similar way to Sneijder. Would love to be proven wrong though!!

I know this is old but eh, maybe someone will read this.

This is a pretty reductive description of the playmaker's role, if you ask me. If anything it's Herrera's job to drive Utd forward, and his absence meant attacks were instigated so slowly that, when Mata finally received the ball, the defence was already organised. Furthermore, Rooney and RVP were never finding any space because Utd didn't have enough width to stretch the defence, due to our wing backs never knowing where to be at what times. The only time we ever stretched them was when Valencia occasionally stopped being timid (indeed, our goal resulted from this), while on the other flank Ashley Young cuts inside so much he provides no width even when he's attacking. So Mata was receiving the ball late, and then given the less than enviable task of unlocking an organised, compact and ready defence. It's no wonder he kept having to pass sideways or backwards.

In all fairness he was being used out on the wing under Mourinho when he was clearly struggling there, even at United he played wide for a while until he was used centrally and started scoring

Rooney and Mata have been lucky to get the points they have got so far.

Given the fixtures they will probably scrape to a half-decent return, but I absolutely refuse to believe it's going to be the optimal way to spend 20% of your team value.

You basically need one of them to be involved in every goal, because Man U just aren't going to score enough.

But how have they been lucky? Same could be said about Ramsey and his two tap ins?

Granted United don't look like much at the moment, but with the defences they're coming up against now and the likes of Rojo and any new signings coming into the team, you'd expect it to be a boost and see more goals.

That's what I'm expecting anyway, I guess it's just a game of wait and see though

United have scored 1 goal against Swansea and 1 goal against Sunderland, looking very poor in the process.

Liverpool only scored two goals at this stage in the season last year. Granted they didn't have Suarez, but you know what I'm getting at. It's onlytwo games under anew manager with a new system and new players. With the new signings coming in it might be a slow improvement, but we all know how LVG likes to attack

I know what you're saying, Mata and Rooney should plug away getting points regulary but I just think other players will outscore them.

It feels like I am paying premium money for players who finished 7th last seasonwhere as I could have Cesc, Silva, Costa, Sterling, Sturridge, Ramsey etc.

If you went without Mata and arguebly even Rooney it is hardly going to ruin your season.

How do you think van Persie's return could affect Rooney? van Persie looked bluntin the last few WC games, and his first game in the league has not been better in any way. Regardless of that, he will still be ManUtd's target man and everyone will be looking to feed him a pass for a shot at goal as frequently as they can. Doesn't that take away some attacking potential away from Rooney? Surely Rooney would also be producing chances for van Persie, but with Persie's lack of sharpness I doubt he will convert many of the chances created.

Have a feeling that United would thrash one of their next 3 newly promoted opponents.

Players returning from injury and them buying a few new players should help matters.

I'm hoping that happens after some on here ditch their United assets.

    Siggy - Rambo - Eriksen - Sterling - Sidwell
    Austin - Rooney - Costa

Seems that way, Luis to Azpi (if you want to stick with Chelsea def/can afford to after his drop). Chambers might also need to be making his way out when you can manage it. Can you field a half decent 11 with a FT (or 2) and WC after next week?

      1. bennyp

I have 1 FT atm. I can field a decent 11, but its everton vs chelsea and liverpool vs spurs so doesnt look great! I like the idea of baines, thought he might of done well vs the big teams, was a punt, but once fixtures ease up I want him for sure. Might need to wildcard...

Keep in mind that everyone will be limited by those 2 fixtures. I would expect Chelsea to go to Everton and look to keep it very tight, Sterling could still run riot at Spurs, I'm thinking of bringing him in this week myself. Bego has City too. I think you're right on wildcarding.

I don't think it's worth wildcarding. I'd say get rid of Bego and Luis for Krul and Azpi. You can still field a strong 11 next week even if Austin doesn't play.

            Krul
            Azpi Baines Clyne Chambers/Oshea
            Siggy Rambo Eriksen Sterling

Or you could also do Luis -> Cahill/Terry since you'll save 0.5 on the keep.

I don't know if this will be allowed by Mark or the mods as it was frowned upon previously buuut... there are some right knobs on here at times, especially when the matches are on, whose posts are simply unsporting, hateful and pathetic.

Should I start up the Twat of the Week award again?

When the site changed format last year we were told that these "lol@ xyz's broken leg" comments would be deleted, thus there'd be no need for TotW, but they are still prolific. I don't see a problem with "naming and shaming" as it's the community having their say.

As said, I don't want to piss people off but I really do feel we should fight back as this place is ludicrous at times!

      Bego -> 4.0m
      Young -> Henderson/Chadli

My vote would be for Henderson, not sold on Chadli. See if Hendo performs well today. You could also do Bego to a 4.5m and Young -> Larsson/Downing/Dyer/etc.

Obviously it would be nice to upgrade Bojan, so you could get Naismith, but not sure he is a long term option.

    Fabregas Sterling Ramsey Siggy Marney
    Costa Rooney Dzeko

1 free transfer, nothing in the bank.

Nice squad, similar to mine. Clyne is 5.1 so you can't get him. Dier seems decent now, but not sure he is nailed long-term. At least Hutton/Wisdom are playing 90 min. You could look at sending Debuch out for a 5.0m (Clyne or similar), and then getting rid of Caulker next week. Saving a FT isn't a bad idea either, since there are going to be some more signings this week.

Is Eriksen to Lamela a sideways move?

I couldnt watch the spurs game today, but just watched the MOTD highlights and Lamela looked very very good, but I was just wondering if perhaps Eriksen was more influential and was unlucky that his work didn't lead to anything. I did see the freekick which hurt to watch. How did that not bounce back off the keeper!!?
