Scouting The Doubles

Scouting the Doubles – Everton

Reading’s surprise 1-0 FA Cup win at Goodison Park on Tuesday evening gave the green light to yet another double gameweek, with Everton now facing two league games in the next seven days. Having beaten holders Chelsea in the previous round, David Moyes’ side were odds-on favourites to progress, but a thoroughly downbeat Toffees boss admitted post-match:

”We let the supporters down, we didn’t play well enough and we got what we deserved. We had to chase the game and got more desperate as the game went on and we didn’t have enough to open them up. “

Moyes will be looking for a big response from his side, then, as they travel to St James’ Park this Saturday afternoon before facing Carling Cup holders Birmingham City at Goodison next Wednesday evening.

The Prospects

Everton’s 2-0 win over Sunderland last weekend will no doubt have Fantasy Managers mulling over defensive options but it’s really only papered over the cracks of their defensive fragility; they have chalked up just two clean sheets in their last seventeen league games, Sunderland match inclusive. Before the game with Steve Bruce’s side, Everton had played seven league matches since the turn of the year and conceded two or more goals in six of them.

Despite a poor showing this season, the competitive nature of the Premier League means Everton’s season still hangs in the balance; a win at Newcastle would leave them just three points behind sixth-placed Merseyside rivals Liverpool but, on the other hand, Moyes’ side sit just five points above the drop zone. As Arsenal recently discovered, winning at St James’ Park is not at all straightforward and Alan Pardew has suffered just one loss in the last nine league games as Newcastle boss. Everton have only averaged one goal per game away from home, too.

Birmingham approach their own double gameweek just two points off the drop zone, albeit with two games in hand over their relegation rivals. With the Carling Cup win under their belt, Alex McLeish’s side will be fired up for the Goodison visit and will be looking to replicate the form that has seen them win two of their last three on the road. Despite their poor FA Cup showing, Everton have been in good scoring form at home of late, netting two or more goals in each of their last four home league games.

The Likely Lads

The number of assists Leighton Baines racks up negates his lack of clean sheets; the left-back has managed nine already this season, the sixth highest total in the league. Put into perspective, the second highest number of assists by a defender is four. Factor his set-piece duties into the equation, and it’s no real surprise that Baines is the fourth highest-scoring defender in FPL to date.

Moyes’ decision to field Seamus Coleman as a right midfielder has allowed the young Irishman to garner attacking points (3 goals, 3 assists) which, like Baines, means he hasn‘t suffered too badly from the minimal defensive returns. The fact that he’s over £2m cheaper than Baines sees Coleman with the higher ownership of the two. Having been hauled off on 45 minutes of the Reading Cup tie however, there is a nagging doubt that Coleman will start in both of Everton’s two fixtures – he is certainly overdue a rest.

In light of injuries to Marouanne Fellaini and Tim Cahill, the onus is firmly on Mikel Arteta to step up and be counted, following a disappointing season for the Spaniard; although he’s missed just four league games this season, Arteta has picked up just 81 FPL points. Despite this, plenty investment will surely follow, with Fantasy Managers pinning their hopes on the playmaker’s shoulders.

There’s no doubting the quality of Louis Saha -he’s grabbed six goals in his last five league games- but the Frenchman’s inability to steer clear makes him an infuriating Fantasy Option. Following a slow start to his career on Merseyside, Jermaine Beckford has started to show a consistency in the top-flight (he’s scored four in his last five league games) and priced at just £5.0m, could be a real bargain if he continues his recent form. We just have to hope that the traffic doesn’t hold him up.

Cheeky Punts

Victor Anichebe’s return from injury gives Everton a couple of options; he can provide competition for Seamus Coleman for that right midfield slot but, alternatively, injuries to Everton’s attacking options may see Anichebe find some time up front. Everton lined up in a 4-5-1 for the Reading game but Moyes has been fielding 4-4-2 lately, and if either Saha or Beckford (or both) miss either (or both) of the upcoming games, he could be the beneficiary.

If Moyes’ front two are fit and available, however, Jack Rodwell could also be an alternative choice; with the Toffees central midfield so depleted at present, there’s every likelihood he’ll take part in both games and offer potential low the price bracket. Leon Osman is another risky temptation – he fired in more efforts on goal than any of Everton’s midfield against Sunderland and set up three goalscoring efforts for team-mates.

With Chelsea not playing a 4-3-3 with Torres in the side, I'm a bit reluctant to get Lampard in for the Blackpool match. Lampard hasn't really been a box-to-box midfielder and in a 4-4-2 he's not as likely to arrive in the box and get on the end of things as he has done in previous seasons.

I think I'll try and produce one of those heat maps for the Man U game, or check goal attempts on the Guardian chalkboards. I don't want to pay 12.7m for a penalty and set piece threat alone. Are there signs of a 4-4-2 diamond with Frank at the tip, or a 4-3-1-2 perhaps? Any insight?

        I'm waffling again aren't I lol.

Basically, is Frank likely to play advanced in Chelsea's 4-4-2 or will sit alongside Essien with Malouda and Ramires providing the width. It seemed like this against United, but then again that was United they were up against.

The thing is even when we play 4-4-2 Ramires tucks in to allow Frank/Essien further forward.

I would think that there might be calls to try 4-3-3 again this weekend as Malouda has been pretty poor recently.

      Possibly

      Ivanovic Luiz Terry Cole

Anyone going for Osman or Rodwell as cheaper alternatives? Is Rodwell going to be that attacking tho? Osman is half tempting me for some reason.

Rodwell is a good shout imo. I somehow had him for his goal against Man U last year. One word of caution is that with Fellaini out, his forward runs will be curtailed (word of the day :)).

    Afternoon,

    Any comments would be appreciated.

Current Team for next GW is

    Foster (Hart)
    Hangeland - Coleman - R.Johnson - Elmohamdy (Kelly)
Nani - Young - Silva - VDV (if fit) (Adam)
    Rooney Tevez (Campbell)

I’m swayed to transfer in Anelka and Wilshere for VDV and DJ - a 4 point hit. I'm not adverse to taking point hits despite it almost being criminal with some of the people on here.

By the way I do have a rational for the choices:

Looking at the DGW teams the fixtures are only so-so -as are the teams with them. The future games, while attractive; don’t appear to be ‘bonanza games’ for the attacking players I could bring in from either Everton (attacking potential limited, either players are injured or returning from injury) or Birmingham (Bentley –maybe, possibly Martins but we have to wait and see if he gets match fit and time on the pitch and before anyone suggests Zigic, I’ve already been burnt with that one -after his preseason goal glut which never amounted to anything once the season actually started).

Anelka has responded well to the competition for places and, on recent viewing; possibly the most dangerous attacking player for Chelsea at the moment and they are playing Blackpool with a good run after MCY (anything could happen in that one).

Wilshere is; he's cheap, has a good run of games coming up, doesn't look like being rotated because of the problems Arsenal have in midfield; is a current darling with the BPS judges - this is likely to continue as he appears to be trying to become a midfield leader and drag the team forward with the big hitters out. Finally there is a good run of games until the end of the season.

The thing is I wondering if there is a better combination? Budget is 14.3.

    Cheers

With West Brom being a derby and Hodgson likely to play a "XL" team like he did against Stoke and with Birmingham probably still recovering from a draining Final, physically and emotionally. Plus they are carrying injuries. I can see this being a low scoring game maybe 1-0 or a draw. Birmingham are not going to run riot -plus once burnt twice shy. On Bentley; he has 1 assist and no goals all season and only 3 bonus points. The second game they are playing Everton which has draw all over it.

Wilshire fair enough -maybe 7 points max- 60 minutes + an assist and maybe, maybe, a couple of bonus points but better going forward than Bentley –for me anyway.

Anelka – have to wait for the press conference but I can imagine they’ll be going for it possibly playing 3 up front early doors then revert to the variation of 442 once they have gone ahead -City next and they have to find there scoring touch sooner rather later.

I am looking for alternatives -that’s why I posted

I think Wilshere will do very well with Fabregas out. Points per million spent he'll be very good indeed. I'm trying to fit him in but not sure how yet... mostly because i think Nasri will score even better and I don't think there's room for both in my team.

Concerned Harry will wrap VDV in cotton wool while they remain in the CL, despite what happened in the Blackpool game, Tottenham have a reasonably easy run until GW33. I have a feeling VDV is looking at limited game time -although earlier in the season he was doing most of his damage early on.

right, I know I need to sort out Evatt at least, but what do you guys think of this team?

    Foster (Gordon)
    Coleman, Huth, Luiz(1), (Evatt, Bramble)
    Nani, VdV, Lampard, Barton (Adam)
    Tevez, Rooney, Carroll(2)

Luiz is first transfer, Carroll is a 4pt hit. However, in the case of injuries (say Barton or VdV is still out), then I get a very weak bench of Bramble Vs Arsenal or Evatt Vs Chelsea.

Baines. I think he'll be a season keeper. Everton are good season finishers, and Baines isn't your average defender. This is the best week to get him too.

                Kelly > Baines
Cahill (Should have chosen Young...)> Nasri
                Van Persie > Sturridge

Planning Berbatov > Rooney next week. Can't believe he's not getting gametime.

Then probably Vidic > Djourou, Yaya > Lampard.

I dont wanna get Baines as his returns depend on Cahill's form... which is zero atm

I am almost certainly doing Barton to Nasri.. although Lamps is tempting

my other dilemma is RVP -> Who?

I can get Torres but that would lock a lot of money up, Saha would allow me to get VDV the week after

Saha is so injury prone and formless, it'd be akin to my decision last week of choosing Cahill over Young.

Sturridge or Zigic or someone cheap at least gives you funds to use elsewhere for now until a standout candidate comes in.

Gyan maybe for week 32, maybe Van Persie if he gets fit faster than expected, but personally, I'm expecting him to be out for at least 3 gameweeks.

Drogba isn't known for choosing the pass option when he can shoot, hence Anelka having such poor returns when they're both selected. Do we expect Torres to have many chances or should we simply be transferring in Drogba? I expect Anelka to be benched against Blackpool.

Bring in Torres if you are insisting on a chelsea striker. From what I've seen Torres appears to be leading the line whenever he plays.

Yeah, makes sense to have someone playing in every single game, or else you are passing up the opportunity of a captain. I've already got Ryder so will just chuck him the armband, then Roach for the WI-Ban game.

I think I win. Instead of my usual wicketkeeper (De Villiers, a billion-odd quick runs), I went for the differential of "exciting young bowler" Tsotbe for captain (he didn't play), then Akmal (who batted slowly for the bookies and did nothing behind the stumps).

Whoever's last in our league, watch out. I'm coming to get ya.

Ryder (c) and Gayle (c) tomorrow.

Yep me, totally forgot about the game whilst watching SA vs Neds, quickly logged on at 8:59am and first thing I had to do was change captain from Steyn to one of my Pak players who was Shehzad. Next thing I had to do was bring Afridi in, but I was miles too late by that point as they had bowled the first ball... so I just left the transfer and preyed to the cricketing gods. Obvious they chose to ignore me.

Goin with no Chelsea cover this week is very risky.

In your position I would have gambled as many near the top would have played safe and have little to no Chelsea coverage already.

Hi lads any chance you can pick A or B it's tough:

      A) Brunt, Rafael and Nolan OUT (8pointer)

Nasri, Baines and a 4.5 man IN

      B) VDV and Rafael OUT (4 pointer)

      Nasri and Baines IN

This of course is an issue assuming VDV is fit, which I hope he isn't!
