Scouting The Doubles

Scouting the Doubles – Everton

Reading’s surprise 1-0 FA Cup win at Goodison Park on Tuesday evening gave the green light to yet another double gameweek, with Everton now facing two league games in the next seven days. Having beaten holders Chelsea in the previous round, David Moyes’ side were odds-on favourites to progress, but a thoroughly downbeat Toffees boss admitted post-match:

”We let the supporters down, we didn’t play well enough and we got what we deserved. We had to chase the game and got more desperate as the game went on and we didn’t have enough to open them up. “

Moyes will be looking for a big response from his side, then, as they travel to St James’ Park this Saturday afternoon before facing Carling Cup holders Birmingham City at Goodison next Wednesday evening.

The Prospects

Everton’s 2-0 win over Sunderland last weekend will no doubt have Fantasy Managers mulling over defensive options but it’s really only papered over the cracks of their defensive fragility; they have chalked up just two clean sheets in their last seventeen league games, Sunderland match inclusive. Before the game with Steve Bruce’s side, Everton had played seven league matches since the turn of the year and conceded two or more goals in six of them.

Despite a poor showing this season, the competitive nature of the Premier League means Everton’s season still hangs in the balance; a win at Newcastle would leave them just three points behind sixth-placed Merseyside rivals Liverpool but, on the other hand, Moyes’ side sit just five points above the drop zone. As Arsenal recently discovered, winning at St James’ Park is not at all straightforward and Alan Pardew has suffered just one loss in the last nine league games as Newcastle boss. Everton have only averaged one goal per game away from home, too.

Birmingham approach their own double gameweek just two points off the drop zone, albeit with two games in hand over their relegation rivals. With the Carling Cup win under their belt, Alex McLeish’s side will be fired up for the Goodison visit and will be looking to replicate the form that has seen them win two of their last three on the road. Despite their poor FA Cup showing, Everton have been in good scoring form at home of late, netting two or more goals in each of their last four home league games.

The Likely Lads

The number of assists Leighton Baines racks up negates his lack of clean sheets; the left-back has managed nine already this season, the sixth highest total in the league. Put into perspective, the second highest number of assists by a defender is four. Factor his set-piece duties into the equation, and it’s no real surprise that Baines is the fourth highest-scoring defender in FPL to date.

Moyes’ decision to field Seamus Coleman as a right midfielder has allowed the young Irishman to garner attacking points (3 goals, 3 assists) which, like Baines, means he hasn‘t suffered too badly from the minimal defensive returns. The fact that he’s over £2m cheaper than Baines sees Coleman with the higher ownership of the two. Having been hauled off on 45 minutes of the Reading Cup tie however, there is a nagging doubt that Coleman will start in both of Everton’s two fixtures – he is certainly overdue a rest.

In light of injuries to Marouanne Fellaini and Tim Cahill, the onus is firmly on Mikel Arteta to step up and be counted, following a disappointing season for the Spaniard; although he’s missed just four league games this season, Arteta has picked up just 81 FPL points. Despite this, plenty investment will surely follow, with Fantasy Managers pinning their hopes on the playmaker’s shoulders.

There’s no doubting the quality of Louis Saha -he’s grabbed six goals in his last five league games- but the Frenchman’s inability to steer clear makes him an infuriating Fantasy Option. Following a slow start to his career on Merseyside, Jermaine Beckford has started to show a consistency in the top-flight (he’s scored four in his last five league games) and priced at just £5.0m, could be a real bargain if he continues his recent form. We just have to hope that the traffic doesn’t hold him up.

Cheeky Punts

Victor Anichebe’s return from injury gives Everton a couple of options; he can provide competition for Seamus Coleman for that right midfield slot but, alternatively, injuries to Everton’s attacking options may see Anichebe find some time up front. Everton lined up in a 4-5-1 for the Reading game but Moyes has been fielding 4-4-2 lately, and if either Saha or Beckford (or both) miss either (or both) of the upcoming games, he could be the beneficiary.

If Moyes’ front two are fit and available, however, Jack Rodwell could also be an alternative choice; with the Toffees central midfield so depleted at present, there’s every likelihood he’ll take part in both games and offer potential low the price bracket. Leon Osman is another risky temptation – he fired in more efforts on goal than any of Everton’s midfield against Sunderland and set up three goalscoring efforts for team-mates.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

What are Utd fans thoughts about Carrick signing new contract?

Not the player he was I fear, but bossed the midfield against Chelsea and still has some awesome stats.

It's not that fashionable with Utd fans (including my bro and old man) but i actually quite like Carrick. He's been below his usual standard this year, and most of last year in fairness but he can control the games tempo when he isn't giving it away every 3 mins.

its looking more and more like im going to need to take a hit, already 3 confirmed unavailable on bench, vdv is a doubt, coleman maybe a doubt, berbatov who knows, though i think he will. so i was thinking cahill->arteta, but now im wondering if young is wiser for long term returns. these transfers are precious, if im gonna take a hit i feel like it should be for the better player over the course of say the next 4-5 weeks at least. arteta may well score better this GW, but will he over a longer stretch. it would seem not.

I hope Ireland make to the Quarter Finals of Cricket World Cup in India... They are a Well balanced side. I easily see them becoming a Dominant Cricketing force in next 4 years.

But I bet India will knock Ireland off this Sunday. I guess the English Cricket team is capable of reaching semi-finals in cricket. In football, it would only be an IMPOSSIBLE DREAM. Give-up Football England. you are better at Cricket.

    Hey everyone!

    My team is:

    Begovic, Foster
Rafael, Walker, Coleman, Kolarov, R Johnson
A Young, Meireles, Nani, Barton, Adam
    Tevez, Berbatov, RVP

I have Barton, Adam and RVP injured. And Rafael and Berbatov, who don't always start every game.

I have one free transfer this week. Who would be the best to take out? I wanna get Rooney in the team somehow eventually. Any advice is much appreciated.

Anything in the bank? Adam is only banned for 1 more game, and has 4 straight home games coming up in April, so I'd just bench him.

RvP to someone like Saha (if you're feeling brave) would free up some cash, then you could get Rooney in for Berba after the Utd - Liverpool game.

Out of the 5 players you've got inj / banned, I'd get rid in this order:

          RvP
          Rafael
          Barton
          Berbatov
          Adam

You've got plenty of cash, Rafael to Baines would be a good move I reckon. RvP is not a quick healer, so lose him, money isn't an issue so Torres v Blackpool could pay off.

Yup, i'm backing Carlitos too, even with DGW players.

Only thing bugging me is with Dzeko and Balotelli on the pitch there is more goal threat rather than a one man scoring band.

However, Mancini has said today that he doesn't see how he can fit all 3 into the same team.

Was hoping that Fabregas would be a nice differential this week, but looks like that plan is out of the water, at least I jumped ship on RVP at the right moment.

    For this week thinking

    a) Barton & Fabregas> Ferguson & Lampard
    b) Barton & Fabregas> Arteta & Nasri

I know Ferguson is not likely to get many attacking points, but should be good for some bps and has 2 dgws coming up.

Is it worth an 8 point hit to bring in Luiz, Lampard and Saha this week?

I'm still in the Fantasy Cup and mine and my opponent's likely starting XIs (before transfers) differ only in that he will have Hart, Nasri and Rooney, against my Foster, Coleman and Odemwingie.

I could play it safe and get Nasri, but I think I might go for it and attack.

    Thoughts?

i really think malouda might be a fantastic option for this week. cheaper than drogs and lampard, slightly worried he wont start, but he tends to do well with drogs in the side and i think drogs will start this weekend

+1 and as u said rbj he might not start...too much of a risk for a player who is over 9.0 when there are are other options....

I can see the logic in people wanting to bring Chelsea players in with Blackpool upcoming, but it is too much of a lottery at the moment. Torres still not firing, Drog rotation risk, Anelka could score 12 points or 2. Malouda looks lost.

          Sooooo frustrating!

I don't think Blackpool will be steamrollered. Yes they miss Adam, but will be up for it and usually find the net.

Lampard's the man for these kind of fixtures.

I can see a 2-goal 15 point haul for Mr Bleakley this weekend.

So the big question of the day, will RVP withstand another day without dropping in price? Hes on 230% to drop on totalfpl and has around 15,000 sales to his name today but is listed as 'protected' he evidently was covered by said protection yesterday but how long can it go on? What do you think?

theres ten gameweeks to go, worrying about price at this point is stupid. get rid of him if you want the money he has tied up or need the striker spot. but even if hes gonna drop, dont sell him until the last possible moment for whoever yourt target is.

I have to say i agree with you about waiting until the last minute in most cases but i need the exact amount i can currently get for him to fund a transfer for the following gameweek. Im probably going to have to do it today just incase. I suppose i just hoped some knowledgable chap with a bit of insight into how this 'protection' lark works would happen to be on here with some assurances.

Our Survey - TM's the main source of knowledge about this, but I've already taken him out. He's already had 61000 transfers out this week, on CTC he's no longer protected, so assuming his protection was zeroed at 20-25000, he must be close to dropping. Only my opinion though.

Not really the big question on my lips to be honest.

Not sure if transfers for cash purposes as part of a long term strategy is the best of ideas. You could quite easily get burnt by injuries/illness etc if you bring someone in early so that you get 'best value'.
