Scout Scribbles – City on the Verge

City scrape a home draw with Ajax thanks to goals from Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure but now remain perilously close to crashing out of Europe altogether. Arsenal throw away a two-goal lead in Schalke to earn a point, with Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud both finding the net…

Man City 2 Ajax 2
Sergio Aguero came back into the first XI, having been afforded a brief sub role at West Ham last Saturday. Pablo Zabaleta also returned at right-back, with Kolo Toure dropping out, while Javi Garcia was also handed a place in the starting line-up after a recent injury. Maicon was fit enough to return to the bench. In what Roberto Mancini described as a “must-win” game, City managed a draw after clawing back a two-goal deficit – Aguero and Yaya Toure found the net, with Mario Balotelli and Samir Nasri supplying the assists. While Aguero was given the full 90 minutes ahead of Sunday’s game with Spurs, Carlos Tevez’s owners will be happy with his 66th minute withdrawal, as the latter made way for Edin Dzeko.

City remain bottom of Group D and are in real danger of missing out on European progress altogether – six points behind top of the table Dortmund and five behind second placed Real Madrid, Mancini’s side are two points adrift of Ajax, with games against the top two remaining. Post-match, Mancini was in a defiant mood…

“If we win two games, get eight points and go through, we can win the Champions League, it’s simple – if our destiny is this then we should win the Champions League.”

While City’s failure to progress even to the Europa League would be seen as disastrous around the Etihad, from a Fantasy perspective it makes their assets far more appealing – City are also out of the Capital One Cup and would surely be set for far less rotation, with Mancini’s main focus the Premier League if his side do indeed crash out altogether at the first hurdle.

City Starting XI: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Nastasic, Clichy, Garcia (Balotelli 46), Barry (Kolarov 85), Yaya Toure, Nasri, Tevez (Dzeko 66), Aguero

Schalke 2 Arsenal 2
With Gervinho still unavailable due to an ankle injury, Theo Walcott was handed a rare start on the Arsenal right and vindicated Arsene Wenger’s faith by opening the scoring for the visitors. Olivier Giroud kept the lone striker role and notched the Gunners’ second thanks to a Lukas Podolski assist, while in a defensive reshuffle, Thomas Vermaelen moved to left-back and Laurent Koscielny returned to the heart of the back-four; the much-maligned Andre Santos dropped out. Bacary Sagna started yet again at the expense of Carl Jenkinson at right-back; the fit-again Frenchman is clearly well ahead of the former Charlton man in the pecking order.

Arsenal Starting XI: Mannone, Sagna, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Arteta, Wilshere, Walcott, Cazorla (Coquelin 90), Podolski (Santos 90), Giroud

Prior to the match, Wenger revealed he has been utilising Walcott sparingly due to an illnness but with Aaron Ramsey – if fit – set to fill in for the suspended Jack Wilshere in central midfield against Fulham this weekend, Walcott’s display last night will surely have nailed-down a starting role on the right against the Cottagers. Wenger had this to say on Walcott’s display last night…

“He did well, very well. He had a positive attitude and was fresh as well. He was the only one you always felt could make a difference and it was no coincidence he had the chance in the final minute”.

Walcott himself has no doubt that his recent performances warrant regular starts….

“I just want to play – hopefully now I can get a run in the team because I feel I fully deserve it”

However, when questioned on Walcott’s potential role as a striker, Wenger indicated that he is likely to continue to utilise Walcott in a flanking role, with Podolski also playing wide of Olivier Giroud up front…

“Well, a winger is a striker. Not for you? Giroud has Walcott and Podolski with him. We scored two goals. We had more chances and played with three offensive midfielders as well. At some stage, we have to put one or two defenders in the team as well.”

Giroud spoke to the press before last night’s match, giving an indication of his self-belief heading into the Schalke encounter:

“Scoring goals is an obsession for me, and probably for all strikers. I must admit, I’ve had a little bit of a difficult start but the boss and the coaches trust in me and just say, ‘Don’t worry, the goals will come soon. Continue to work hard in training – you have the right qualities’. I’m keeping confident and continuing to work hard. I scored many goals early on in my career, and when you score it obviously makes you feel better.
But I’m happy at the moment, and I feel I did well when I came on against Reading in the League Cup. So everything is OK, I just need to keep working hard.”

Slated by many after managing a single goal in the opening 10 Gameweeks of the domestic season, the Frenchman’s goal will perhaps persuade Fantasy managers of his abilities ahead of a strong upcoming run of fixtures. A glance at the season ticker shows Wenger’s side have just one decidedly tricky match to navigate (away to Everton in Gameweek 14) between now and Gameweek 21. If he can continue in the same vein, it’s good news for Santi Cazorla’s owners, too; the playmaker has laid on a multitude of chances for his team-mates this term but has so far picked up just two assists due to inept finishing by others.

In Other News
Matt Taylor could be set for a quick return to action for West Ham this weekend. The former Bolton man had started four of the Hammers’ first five but has been bothered by a calf injury in recent matches – with major question marks still hanging over the likes of James Collins, Guy Demel and James Tomkins, Taylor’s possible return is something of a relief for Sam Allardyce as West Ham brace themselves for a run of fixtures that pits them against seven of the top 10 in the next nine Gameweeks.

Richard Dunne has edged towards a comeback for Villa after returning to training earlier this week. The centre-half has yet to feature under new boss Paul Lambert this season after undergoing two operations to resolve a groin injury sustained at Euro 2012, though Lambert was understandably cautious when asked whether the Irishman will be back in the first-team anytime soon:

“Richard is back in training and it’s his first time since the European Championships, really. Will he be back soon? I’m not sure really because he’s got to get up to speed with training and get some games under his belt. He’s still a wee bit away”

Swansea’s Chico Flores is hoping to be fit to face Southampton at the weekend. The Spaniard missed the 1-1 draw with Chelsea with a hamstring injury and Michael Laudrup is being cautious of his chances of being in contention…

“I don’t know yet whether Chico will make it, but I think from my experience that his injury would normally keep you out for seven days…Hopefully he will train on Wednesday or Thursday. We can never know for sure, but I hope he has a good chance to make it.”

Reading’s young stopper, Alex McCarthy, has emerged as a definite doubt for their crucial home clash with Norwich at the weekend, having suffered a shoulder injury in his sprawling dive to Djibril Cisse’s late effort on Sunday’s draw with QPR. McCarthy tweeted an update only yesterday…

“Shoulder is feeling better today, but results didn’t come back as I wanted. Going to see shoulder specialist tonight to see what outcome is!”

With Adam Federici fit to return, this could now hand the Australian a lifeline and deny McCarthy a continued run in the side. McCarthy was listed as a 4.0 keeper prospect in the Fantasy Premier League game and has attracted enough interest to rise to 4.1. His new owners now face an anxious wait to see if he can make the weekend clash.

There will still be massive rotation. Can't see any of the 4 strikers sitting on the bench every game.

But once they're out of the CL, Aguero will surely get the most gametime out of the 4 strikers?

He could be explosive but you'll get A few 1's as he comes off the bench. Spesh as there are 3 matches in 7 days end of nov and over Xmas. Also city aren't playing well enough and scoring enough goals to justify the 11m.

Having said all that it's a risk tht has the potential to pay off. I'd rather Berba/ba/jelly alongside Rvp as they are all guaranteed to play.

Points hits just to get value is crazy IMO. I am doing much much better this season than past seasons only because I am patient with my transfers and avoiding points hits.

I have two midfield slots to fill 15.7 million to spend, any good recommendations?

    Bale Mata Sterling ??????? ????????

As generic as it is for value and potential I cannot see past Fellani and Michu. Leaves me 1.2 million in the bank too.

The only other option I can see is to have 3 big midfielders and go Cazorla and a budget 6.3 million midifielder.

It has to be right, at the price and the fact both are playing up front. Combined they must outscore Cazorla plus a cheap midifielder across the season.

Vidic won't be back until late Dec, SAF won't rush him in either.
Rafael has the right back spot nailed unquestionably.
Evans and Ferdinand are playing pretty well especially Rio this year actually.

Smalling is due to play some part in tonight's game, I'll admit he is a reasonably threat to all of Evans, Ferdinand and possibly Rafael actually. On the other hand, Fergie likes consistency at the back nowadays....hmmm. Evra?

I don't know man it's not that crazy. I think if you want Liverpool coverage then it's not a bad idea to go with GBH. The forward slots are precious and if you go with Suarez you could miss out. The midfield slots are more open though and you will still have other big point scorers if SG's not performing. But I reckon he'll tip away all season and be up there

Random musing or why I still don’t think RVP is all that he is made out to be.

RVP’s accuracy is currently 53%, with goal conversion at 50%, and assist conversion at 25%. RVP currently scores a goal for every 3.71 shots he takes.

See the problem yet? He is World Class, but last year he converted 17.2% of his shots on target (180ish SOT). Okay, so he is in a very good team who create clear cut chances, but Messi/Ronaldo are as well, and they don’t convert at RVP’s current rate.

Now United may create more chances going forward, it’s certainly a possibility. However, I think other players will take some of them, where at Arsenal it was pretty much all RVP. Last week, Rooney had as many shots as RVP and created more KP.

RVP is not as guaranteed minutes (e.g. Vs Wigan) or set piece dominance anymore, he shares some free kick duties and penalties is debatable.

Now the next point is captaincy, lets suppose United do create more chances and RVP gets a rate of around 7 points per game played (was 7.5 last season), you captain him, double that. Simple and effective.

Course by the same argument you could captain Ba every week so far and made around 7 points per game or Rooney 6.4 or Suarez 6 (on average) and use the extra funds to make up the difference or exceed it.

The analogy I like to think of, is that someone gives you a lump sum of money, you could play it very safe, put it in the bank and make a little interest on it, or you could invest in shares of a company and make a calculated risk for higher returns.

So in summary imo, and that all this is, an alternative argument, I may well be wrong and this is going against the grain.

RVP is a World Class striker, surrounded by very good players and a World class manager (coming from a pool fan). He is currently maintaining unsustainable numbers, he will regress. United may create more chances. Overall, I think the low 7ish points per 90 played is a fair call, considering he was on 7.5 last year and his current stats/regression built in and United creating more over the next while.

Considering his high ownership and all of the above, I think there is a very reasonable argument for not owning RVP.

I may be wrong of course and spending that extra few million is a risky venture in its own right, but you don’t win jack by following the crowd completely, you come somewhere in the middle. The maths don’t hold up on RVP currently, don’t buy the hype.

(P.s. My overall message, which I espouse often on here, is don’t buy what I say as complete gospel either, think for yourself and ignore the herd espousing that RVP is a “must have”. If you think he is, then do it. But too often I see people on here reply to every RMT, every topic with “Huurr get RVP he rocks my socks every night”. It’s getting old.)

Statistics would suggest he will, everyone eventually does (ala Cisse last year). At least to his averages, which are impressive, but not his current rate.

I do agree United will create more over the next few, and hence that is a mitigating factor, but I do think a touch of regression in points per 90 is due.

I don't think he's a "must have" and all that. There are none so far this season, imo. But I bought him last week, and will buy Rooney with week because United have an amazing set of fixtures and I think they'll both do very very well over the next 5. After that I'll reassess again, and I wouldn't be surprised if I take him out again.

Both I meant. Haven't looked at it at all, but if there's a big swing in fixtures after these 5 I might dump them both. No idea at the moment though.

Not bringing in RvP or Rooney this GW.Rather looking at how Utd shapes
up.If Rooney plays an advanced role,I see both scoring the same
and Rooney the better one to have.

      Problem is as follows:

In the next 4 GW´s everyone and their dog will captain RvP. If you happen to be without him and he scores an hat-trick when every other player does nil where does that leave you? Exactly!

I guess what i'm suggesting is, that the maths really don't suggest this will happen, the opposite infact unless United create more. I think they will, but I also think RVP will hit regression at some point.

Like Cisse last year. It is not sustainable, but i can't call when his crazy run will end and regression will kick in.

I see your point and I kind of agree with it, but you must consider that in the past he has played with Arsenal so the chances were at least 25% more difficult to convert.

        True 🙂

But he got more chances ( or at least it looks that way so far).

He can't keep up his current rate imo, if he does, he will have to give Messi lessons on finishing (though Messi is crazy accurate with his shots, but still does not convert at RVP's current rate.)

some nice points, only thing i would say that it is easy to pick someone like Ba in hindsight to compare him to and say "if you captain him", what is his comparison in relation to others like giroud or jelavic who you might also have picked. And therte is no way anyone would have captained BA for all his fixtures.
So I shall keep him thanks.
        But nice name 😉

Well not really, RVP will get the odd blank here and there, but will average out probably the best scorer in the game. But you could for example, Captain Suarez every week, average out the 6 points and use the extra few bob to invest in your squad to make up the extra points or exceed.

Suarez is doing enough to justify 6 points per 90, RVP is not doing enough o justify his current production, if you believe in statistics in football.

It's certainly closer then some would have you think anyways, course picking those other players is the tricky bit. Hence RVP being safe like a bank.

RVP ain't Messi or Ronaldo either, and they don't keep up that rate.

Last year we heard "Well Cisse is a class finisher in form".

He was an above average finisher scoring an unsustainable amount, going by career statistics. Same with RVP now.

Unless he is the best finisher ever and only realized it upon moving to United (unlikely).

You make valid points Brian. Indeed, you do. I just hope you realize that all the buzz about this one player is there for a reason. I thought I could do without the Dutchman this season cause he's too damn expensive in the CS game but I now realize I need him if I want to keep the lead in my mini league.

Your case, and everyone else's for that matter, might be different. And that's what makes FPL so damn beautiful.

I was one of the really early adopters of RVP last year, saved my season 🙂

I love him and can't blame people for having him. Just the one's who say he is a must have, seems a bit premature and based more off last season then this year (if you believe the numbers, it can be interpreted different, statistics and lies and all that)
