Scout Scribbles – City on the Verge

City scrape a home draw with Ajax thanks to goals from Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure but now remain perilously close to crashing out of Europe altogether. Arsenal throw away a two-goal lead in Schalke to earn a point, with Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud both finding the net…

Man City 2 Ajax 2
Sergio Aguero came back into the first XI, having been afforded a brief sub role at West Ham last Saturday. Pablo Zabaleta also returned at right-back, with Kolo Toure dropping out, while Javi Garcia was also handed a place in the starting line-up after a recent injury. Maicon was fit enough to return to the bench. In what Roberto Mancini described as a “must-win” game, City managed a draw after clawing back a two-goal deficit – Aguero and Yaya Toure found the net, with Mario Balotelli and Samir Nasri supplying the assists. While Aguero was given the full 90 minutes ahead of Sunday’s game with Spurs, Carlos Tevez’s owners will be happy with his 66th minute withdrawal, as the latter made way for Edin Dzeko.

City remain bottom of Group D and are in real danger of missing out on European progress altogether – six points behind top of the table Dortmund and five behind second placed Real Madrid, Mancini’s side are two points adrift of Ajax, with games against the top two remaining. Post-match, Mancini was in a defiant mood…

“If we win two games, get eight points and go through, we can win the Champions League, it’s simple – if our destiny is this then we should win the Champions League.”

While City’s failure to progress even to the Europa League would be seen as disastrous around the Etihad, from a Fantasy perspective it makes their assets far more appealing – City are also out of the Capital One Cup and would surely be set for far less rotation, with Mancini’s main focus the Premier League if his side do indeed crash out altogether at the first hurdle.

City Starting XI: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Nastasic, Clichy, Garcia (Balotelli 46), Barry (Kolarov 85), Yaya Toure, Nasri, Tevez (Dzeko 66), Aguero

Schalke 2 Arsenal 2
With Gervinho still unavailable due to an ankle injury, Theo Walcott was handed a rare start on the Arsenal right and vindicated Arsene Wenger’s faith by opening the scoring for the visitors. Olivier Giroud kept the lone striker role and notched the Gunners’ second thanks to a Lukas Podolski assist, while in a defensive reshuffle, Thomas Vermaelen moved to left-back and Laurent Koscielny returned to the heart of the back-four; the much-maligned Andre Santos dropped out. Bacary Sagna started yet again at the expense of Carl Jenkinson at right-back; the fit-again Frenchman is clearly well ahead of the former Charlton man in the pecking order.

Arsenal Starting XI: Mannone, Sagna, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Arteta, Wilshere, Walcott, Cazorla (Coquelin 90), Podolski (Santos 90), Giroud

Prior to the match, Wenger revealed he has been utilising Walcott sparingly due to an illnness but with Aaron Ramsey – if fit – set to fill in for the suspended Jack Wilshere in central midfield against Fulham this weekend, Walcott’s display last night will surely have nailed-down a starting role on the right against the Cottagers. Wenger had this to say on Walcott’s display last night…

“He did well, very well. He had a positive attitude and was fresh as well. He was the only one you always felt could make a difference and it was no coincidence he had the chance in the final minute”.

Walcott himself has no doubt that his recent performances warrant regular starts….

“I just want to play – hopefully now I can get a run in the team because I feel I fully deserve it”

However, when questioned on Walcott’s potential role as a striker, Wenger indicated that he is likely to continue to utilise Walcott in a flanking role, with Podolski also playing wide of Olivier Giroud up front…

“Well, a winger is a striker. Not for you? Giroud has Walcott and Podolski with him. We scored two goals. We had more chances and played with three offensive midfielders as well. At some stage, we have to put one or two defenders in the team as well.”

Giroud spoke to the press before last night’s match, giving an indication of his self-belief heading into the Schalke encounter:

“Scoring goals is an obsession for me, and probably for all strikers. I must admit, I’ve had a little bit of a difficult start but the boss and the coaches trust in me and just say, ‘Don’t worry, the goals will come soon. Continue to work hard in training – you have the right qualities’. I’m keeping confident and continuing to work hard. I scored many goals early on in my career, and when you score it obviously makes you feel better.
But I’m happy at the moment, and I feel I did well when I came on against Reading in the League Cup. So everything is OK, I just need to keep working hard.”

Slated by many after managing a single goal in the opening 10 Gameweeks of the domestic season, the Frenchman’s goal will perhaps persuade Fantasy managers of his abilities ahead of a strong upcoming run of fixtures. A glance at the season ticker shows Wenger’s side have just one decidedly tricky match to navigate (away to Everton in Gameweek 14) between now and Gameweek 21. If he can continue in the same vein, it’s good news for Santi Cazorla’s owners, too; the playmaker has laid on a multitude of chances for his team-mates this term but has so far picked up just two assists due to inept finishing by others.

In Other News
Matt Taylor could be set for a quick return to action for West Ham this weekend. The former Bolton man had started four of the Hammers’ first five but has been bothered by a calf injury in recent matches – with major question marks still hanging over the likes of James Collins, Guy Demel and James Tomkins, Taylor’s possible return is something of a relief for Sam Allardyce as West Ham brace themselves for a run of fixtures that pits them against seven of the top 10 in the next nine Gameweeks.

Richard Dunne has edged towards a comeback for Villa after returning to training earlier this week. The centre-half has yet to feature under new boss Paul Lambert this season after undergoing two operations to resolve a groin injury sustained at Euro 2012, though Lambert was understandably cautious when asked whether the Irishman will be back in the first-team anytime soon:

“Richard is back in training and it’s his first time since the European Championships, really. Will he be back soon? I’m not sure really because he’s got to get up to speed with training and get some games under his belt. He’s still a wee bit away”

Swansea’s Chico Flores is hoping to be fit to face Southampton at the weekend. The Spaniard missed the 1-1 draw with Chelsea with a hamstring injury and Michael Laudrup is being cautious of his chances of being in contention…

“I don’t know yet whether Chico will make it, but I think from my experience that his injury would normally keep you out for seven days…Hopefully he will train on Wednesday or Thursday. We can never know for sure, but I hope he has a good chance to make it.”

Reading’s young stopper, Alex McCarthy, has emerged as a definite doubt for their crucial home clash with Norwich at the weekend, having suffered a shoulder injury in his sprawling dive to Djibril Cisse’s late effort on Sunday’s draw with QPR. McCarthy tweeted an update only yesterday…

“Shoulder is feeling better today, but results didn’t come back as I wanted. Going to see shoulder specialist tonight to see what outcome is!”

With Adam Federici fit to return, this could now hand the Australian a lifeline and deny McCarthy a continued run in the side. McCarthy was listed as a 4.0 keeper prospect in the Fantasy Premier League game and has attracted enough interest to rise to 4.1. His new owners now face an anxious wait to see if he can make the weekend clash.

There is the catch, i can't do Nolan > Theo without downgrading Bale to Valencia. I'm not convinced by Valencia either. I could be tempted by Bale > Walcott? But again, that could go either way.

Just thought after watching last nights match that Kun looks on pretty good scoring form, I predict a bashing of Spurs with Aguero being the main protaganist!!!!! He looked way more involved and sprightly than Tevez.

@Brian Messi takes way more shots from outside of the box which has a 15% lower conversion rate. So did RVP, I have never seen him shoot from outside of the box this season(probably there have been some). Falcao is getting a goal from every 3 shots, so its not impossible when you are a striker on form with a good team. And United attacking is spot on at the moment.

Saying that I dont own him either, and dont think he is worth the cash :D, but if United secure their qualification today, id be tempted by both him and Rooney 😀

yeah it is, for Suarez the case is like for RVP last year- the quality of the chances are much worse and many of those chances he creates himself and takes at tough angles. But has been impressive so far this season

Did not know that about Falcao, thought he was converting in the 30% range (but then again, I only saw that on Sky Sports a few weeks ago, so no maths done there by me!).

I do agree RVP seems to be getting fairly clear cut chances this year, from what I remember it is pretty unlikely to score from outside the box. But at the same time, you'd want more shots on target to sustain his current rate imo. Even one's from outside the box! (Just not too many...looking at you Cabaye/Suarez)

10 from 34 for Falcao. And outside the box even on target dont get to the net that easy- look at Cazorla, a guy who probably gets the most shots on target from outside of the box. Most accurate guy from outside of the box last season in europe and had 9 goals

Falcao can warm my socks any day 😛

He is the focal point of that attack though, where id expect united to share around the chances more (with RVP getting the most, but not by wide margins, ala last weekend).

Id still expect RVP to regress to a bit above his average last year all things considered, maybe 20% conversion rate, but with the amount of chances he is getting I find it hard to believe he will match lasts years rate of 7.5 points per 90 played. You need to be the one and only focal point to do that imo.

Just read your VERY informative post on RVP and I agree he is not a must have. This is the first week since GW4 that I have come out of the top 1k and I havent had RVP.

I think depending on each team there is a case for and against him, but I totally agree that he is not as essential as most on here say everytime they see a team without him.

He's not a must have if you make very shrewd decisions regarding your strikers, basically if you can pick strikers that will do as well as him over a period of time. That's quite tricky as he is scoring a lot.

I'll make one observation on RVP - 4 weeks ago the forum was alive with posts making a case against having him, 3 weeks ago somewhat fewer, 2 weeks ago fewer still, and this is the only one I can recall seeing this week.

My feeling is a brace or hat-trick is always around the corner for RVP...this is one of the most lethal strikers in the world we're talking about...they don't chant 'he scores when he wants' for nothing. He might not represent unbelievable value but there is a reason why he is this expensive = guaranteed points

Also for me I think there are sufficient cheaper options eg Berbatov/Fellaini/Michu to negate what you could afford if you didn't have RVP.

Yes, I was one of these people. I was making similar arguments but I was also adding in rotation risk and the availability of other cheaper strikers who I thought could match his return.

It turns out those other strikers have mostly not delivered and he has. Luckily I didn't sell him!

      Brian,

'Unless he is the best finisher ever and only realized it upon moving to United (unlikely).'

The thing is...RVP is probably one of the best finishers ever. If RVP isn't a world class striker...who is? And I agree that the likes of Cisse last year showed unsustainable form...but he has things working against him: He plays for Newcastle and he has Ba to compete with who is arguably superior.

The key point regarding owning RVP for me is that he is one of the select few strikers you can genuinely see scoring a handful of hat tricks each year...he's that good. Rooney might be a worthy alternative but you get the sense that RVP is going to be the top scorer this year whatever happens. He's too good. And playing for Man Utd now just makes it too easy almost for him. I actually think he could have scored more by now if he wasn't adding other elements to his game and adapting.

Suarez might be keeping up with RVP but he doesn't seem as reliable and plays for a struggling team and with a bunch of 17 year olds flanking him.

I do think RVP will score the most goals and points this season, World class indeed and probably only matches for finishing by Aguero in this league.

But at his price, I don't see him streets ahead for value. I think some regression is due, not radical changes in points production, a bit less then last years totals though. As I say, around 7ish which would still see him comfortably finish the season as the best player in the game.

RVP will score some hat tricks, no doubt. On current stats though, I can't see him doing as well as last year, if you believe in the maths. So there is an alternative argument is all i'm saying and it ain't clear cut, just buy RVP.

He is a safe investment, I like him, just the hype on here is crazy at times.

Your argument is sound but in defense of the hype I would say his massive price makes it difficult for people to get him in and so that barrier alone generates some hype. So when they are convinced they need him they soon realize that they may need to completely reorganize the structure of their team to fit him in. It doesn't help when it appears his price may continue to rise beyond any reach.

Price does play a part in the talk about him, but recently, perhaps more during the day then quiet hours, you see anyone who posts anything that does not include RVP get bombarded with the standard "get RVP". I even see some people who don't have him, get there overall points critizised cause that is down to not having RVP, clearly.

It's a bit mad and counter productive to discussion, he is a great option, we all know it, but discussion should go further then that. WHich i'm happy to say it has this morning and that is all I wanted 🙂

Your point then is more about whether to be a sheep or to hold strong to your convictions then. Thats fair I suppose but it is interesting that the only supposedly must have player recognized by the sheep at this point seems to be RVP. Perhaps that also contributes to the hype.

I would not put it in those terms, seems a bit degrarding to those who own him. I think he is a solid option, but there is an argument against and it's not total madness not to have him.

Growing trend of people just ending every argument with "RVP BRO", no real discussion and the page turns. It kills any sort of discussion.

You could see the odd one last page. As long as people are reasoning, it's great. I could be wrong, RVP could be a must have.

Have Cazorla (9.2m selling price).. is it just me or does he disappear when Wilshire plays? Not a problem for few weeks but I can't help but feel Walcott carries more threat - he's performed well when he has played and should start to feature more. A slow Fulham defence could suit walcott nicely too.

I had Cazorla pegged as a season keeper but beginning to doubt after the past few weeks.

Dunno, might be something to do with the new ap and which browsers use similar coding, just a guess, i'm no expert.

hmmm, I made my transfers early too, now have the slight agony of waiting to see if Mata and Ba will be fit, should be ok though. I have the same problem with the fpl site.

A: Ba – Walcott – 4.6 mid (for the bench)

    or

    B: Suarez – Nolan – Sterling?

Other mids: Mata – Fellanini – Michu

The time of Giroud is nearing. Time to start saving transfers. Lambert/Caz->Giroud/Nolan is pencilled in.

Nolan's fixtures are awful. Can't see why so many are still getting him in.
