The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Boxing Day – Part Two

Gareth Bale blasts a hat-trick to confirm his returns to fitness and heavy-hitting fantasy status, while the Potters find a cutting edge to recover from an early setback and consign Liverpool to defeat. Here’s part two of the Boxing Day Stock Check…

On the Up

Gareth Bale
A devastating hat-trick took Bale to nine goals for the season and gives the Welshman six goals in his last six league appearances. Incredibly, Bale has scored just two goals and only one of his four assists at White Hart Lane, proving to be a deadly weapon on the road. With strong fixtures to come, Bale’s form will bring him huge investment with significant FPL price rises to follow.

Jermain Defoe
His opening strike for Spurs took the England man to ten for the season and keeps Defoe bubbling in the FPL rankings, some 11 points ahead of Wayne Rooney. Bale’s form and his popularity as a midfield acquisition will doubtless dent Defoe’s appeal but Defoe shouldn’t be dismissed lightly. He has started every league match since Gameweek 11 and has never gone more than three starts without scoring.

The Spurs Defence
Their strong run continues: Andre Villas-Boas’ rearguard have now kept four clean sheets in the last five after earning their third consecutive shut-out this evening. With their fixtures remaining strong (sun RDG qpr), there’s no reason to suggest that this kind of form won’t continue in the short-term at least, with Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris justifying their current rankings in our Watchlist.

Steven Gerrard
The converted spot-kick at the Britannia gave Gerrard a third goal in three league starts and means that he’s now delivered returns in five of his last six outings. As tonight’s display demonstrated, however, consistency remains an issue in the Liverpool camp.

Jon Walters
One of the most unfashionable Fantasy assets around, Walters demonstrated what he is capable of by delivering a brace to notch his biggest returns of the season. With five goals and three assists so far, Walters has delivered strong value for his 6.4 price tag and, if Michael Kightly retains the right-wing role shifting Walters up in support of the lone striker, he could yet go on providing profit.

Kenwyne Jones
With strong and reliable budget options thin on the ground up front, Jones has quietly established a starting role in Tony Pulis’ side at the expense of Peter Crouch and is taking his opportunity. While the Potters attack is far from potent, Jones looks an effective blunt instrument and has provided two goals in three games, with an assist tonight – a good return on a 5.0 FPL price tag.

Going Down

Ryan Shawcross & Geoff Cameron
Both were teetering on the tightrope and both toppled off with bookings in the victory over Liverpool. The Stoke defensive stalwarts, with over 40% FPL ownership between them, will now miss the home league clash with Southampton this coming weekend.

The Villa Defence
Having conceded just two goals in five matches between Gameweeks 12-17, Paul Lambert’s back four have simply capitulated in the last two matches, shipping 12 goals to Chelsea and Spurs. With five conceded to City and three to United, it’s becoming clear that Villa are all too easily disposed of by the bigger sides. While fixtures are obliging in the coming weeks, confidence in the Villa rearguard has been shattered.

Steven Caulker
Caulker has, on occasions, looked a strong option within the Spurs back four, having enjoyed a run of starts from Gameweek 6-11. Since then, however, he has been subject to heavy rotation with the likes of Michael Dawson, William Gallas and Jan Vertonghen all vying for the centre-back roles. Caulker was benched again today and with Benoit Assou-Ekotto close to a return at left-back, it appears the Vertonghen/Gallas partnership could emerge as the established first choice option.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

how exactly do United keep getting winning so many matches? man for man, there's probably 4 or 5 teams better than this in the premiership. city for one, must be 8-3, or 9-2 man to man?

        ok, not best 11 etc, but i'll give you this list, and fair enough it's a fpl list but the (potential) midfield is a mix of (and i know there's rotation but none of these has had that great of a season);
        carrick 50
        cleverly 39
        valencia 38
        young 32
there's a few on 23 etc -schole giggs, kagawa, nani, anderson, fletcher....

this isn't an anti united post by the way, it's more in amazement how good they can be, with (such) a midfield as this

They have a ridiculous grit, determination and the competitive edge to win matches...

It seems to have been instilled in them from the very beginning...

SAF has to take all the credit for that... it's hard not to admire that coming from a purely objective standpoint...

i would more or less agree with all of this, but as unreal alludes to below, they have scholes and giggs still going. i'm slightly younger them them and i still play and i can see the gulf that age brings (obviously at lower level).

    Bego - Jussi
    Baines - GJ - Fonte - Demel - Shorey
    Mata - Silva - Caz - Michu - Guthrie
RVP - Suarez - Djib Cisse

Tis madness imo.....some have had him so long they are afraid to get rid of him in case he gets a massive haul as soon as they sell him. Until Everton keep clean sheets he ain't worth it and without Fellani playing the deep Midfield role then they ain't gonna start clocking them up anytime soon anyway...

There are a LOT of teams like that. I faced one in the first round of the cup and thankfully won. But it's a little like playing a WC team. I've talked with several people who lost to a team just like you described.

Snake! you said i should do sterling > pienar instead of walcott > bale because "i'll wanti him back", but then you did santi > bale. how tricky is that! but then you also said i should (c) RVP & not michu, so i think it's all square. hehe

Oi! I suggested that you'd want Theo back; I also said that you should get Bale in for another player. 🙂

RVP cap still went well though.

I went Bale just before the deadline because I fancied a gamble; plus I thought that RVP would get rested.

RVP is definitely my C next GW.

i asked "A) walcott > bale B) sterling > pie C) ba > torres" and you said "B". didn't notice Bale was mentioned for another player. haha, my mistake.

            nope, captained Michu. =(

'when in doubt, captain RVP'... i should hang this on my monitor.

Yes because a) Can't see Giroud or Podolski keeping Ba out, and b) Liverpool want a proper striker for Suarez to play off and they don't come more 'proper' than Sturridge ;). Also if the likes of Shelvey, Suso can get a game...

You're exactly right regarding Liverpool. They need a better goal scoring threat than Shelvey and Suso. It would be interesting to see him play thru the middle (Studge)

I don't see Ba to Arsenal tbh. "Everyone" has known about this so called clause since 'Arry opened his gob. But he's never gone anywhere. After the money AW spent on strikers does he really need another?

    My team is :

    Jask, Ming
Cameron (susp), Ridg, Shorey (dropped), Enrique, Demel ( on 75% playing)
    Walcott, Snod, Piennar, Sess, Mata
    Roon (inj), Suarez , Fletcher
1 FT and 4.4 in the bank

Should i play 3-5-2 expecting Demel and Shorey to play

Whom should i get for Rooney. ( RVP, Torres, Berba)
Should i do Snod to Bale too for a 4 pt hit
    or figure out defence.

Have to WC in GW 21 which is expected soon

    Template team ahoy! Gotta be;

    Begovic - AN Other
    Stoke x 1 - 6.0 x 1 - 4.0 x 3
    Bale - Mata - Michu - Cazorla/Walcott - Sterling/Puncheon
RVP - 2 x Split what ever cash you have left

Missing anything? Apart from City coming good in the next few weeks and suddenly Silva/Aguero/Tevez all become must haves......

Unless we hear anything definitive, probably yes.

If he's injured he won't play/bench, if he's not he will play you can't afford to have him on your bench...
