Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Pottered

Tony Pulis will need to reshuffle his defensive options after two of Stoke’s regular back-four fell foul of the referee’s wrath against Liverpool in Boxing Day. Ryan Shawcross and Geoff Cameron will now sit out the Potters’ home clash against Southampton after accruing their fifth cautions of the campaign in Wednesday’s 3-1 win:

The duo are two of four players who are set to serve an automatic one-match ban in Gameweek 20. Villa’s Fabian Delph and Newcastle centre-half Mike Williamson are also sidelined against Wigan and Arsenal respectively.

While those four are unavailable, a quartet of new protagonists appeared on the Suspension Tightrope after receiving their fourth cautions of the campaign in midweek. Yaya Toure, Bradley Johnson, Jean Beausejour and Maynor Figueroa will all need to be on their best behaviour this upcoming weekend, as will 27 other players, including the likes of Robin Van Persie, Michu, Gareth Bale, Jermain Defoe, Adel Taarabt and Kevin Nolan; once Gameweek 20 is out the way, though, the limit is then extended to 10 yellows. So far, a quartet on players lead the race for that dubious honour – Luis Suarez, James Perch, Craig Gardner and Angel Rangel all have seven bookings apiece.

Both Darron Gibson and Carlton Cole are available this weekend, however. The FA have overturned three-match bans handed out to the pair in West Ham’s Gameweek 18 home clash with Everton – good news for those Fantasy managers eyeing up Cole as a possible double Gameweek punt; the 4.9 priced forward has produced two goals, an assist and six bonus points in four games since deputising for the injured Andy Carroll.

Elsewhere, Cheick Tiote returns for Newcastle’s trip to Arsenal after sitting out their 4-3 defeat at Old Trafford, while Marouane Fellaini serves the final fixture of his three-match ban as Everton welcome Chelsea to Goodison Park.

Further to some discussion about hits above. In MY opinion, all transfers should be looked at on their individual merits. That is there is no point putting off (or not making) a transfer because you have already made a transfer (so it will cost a hit), or you have other transfers that are more pressing, due to injuries, etc. If you think that Walcott/Santi will outscore Silva by more than 4 pts from now up until the WC, then it is worth getting him him, REGARDLESS of what other injuries you have or transfers you need to make.

NB This is different if you are concentrating on a H2H, as hits often only pay back over a number of weeks.

agreed! and often a hit pays itself back immediately i.e. my silva to bale hit this last week

speaking of hits, was about to ask you: what do you think of sess and sterling to walcott and puncheon for a hit this week ?

As it allows you to get Walcott in then yes, but puncheons fixtures are pretty bad. I was planning up until the WC, and there isn't a fixture that i would play him in. If its the same for you, how about getting a cheaper mid? Don't laugh when I say this..........Marveaux............

Seriously. If you wouldn't be starting puncheon in any matches anyway, then you could risk him. And save the extra 0.5 (0.6m?).

so you agree with me that you guys will struggle against walcott this week? okay good

you wouldn't play him against villa?? i guess I see your point though, especially since i've got lambert. price rises are the big reason to get him though as i bet a bunch will snap him up in their wc's

marveaux!? *sigh* not this again... 😀

I see your point though. but the thing is i'm considering perhaps suarez and puncheon to podolski(or ba if he goes to ars) and nolan for the dgw then getting suarez back in my wc the next week

I was going to say get the cheapest playing mid. And then i realized that is probably marveaux! The point is more that you might as well save the money on puncheon, if you are not going to be playing him. The fact that there is major potential upside on Marveaux is just an added bonus

ALL transfers end up costing you 4pts. Whether it means a hit now, or further down the line (unless you have 2 fts).

The fact is that arsenal's PRIME fixture is this week against a shocking newcastle defence. If you're not going to get him in this week, there is not much point, until the DGW

All transfers don't end up costing you 4 points. They only cost you points if you go over your FREE allowance. Its not even like Walcott is 100% nailed on and your advocating taking a hit to get rid of Silva for Walcott which to me is just seems ill advised. Arsenal play Southhampton next week which is an easier fixture imo

If you make a transfer, rather than carrying that transfer over into the next week, and then take a hit at some point down the line, because you don't have a ft, then that first transfer effectively cost you 4pts. That's how I understand it anyway. Feel free to correct me!

Every GW you are given a Free Transfer. If you use that 1 then no points will be dudcted. If you use more than that 1 then you incur a points hit. So if u only made 1 transfer every game week you would NEVER suffer a -4 hit. You can also save FT but only upto 2 max.

his point is if you have 1 ft and make it this week and then need to take a hit next week, essentially your transfer this week costed you 4pts because had you saved it you'd have 2ft's next week and not need a hit

by that logic - you should be picking a dream team every week. The point is that it's not all about your picks. Sometimes, RVP scores a hat trick away at chelsea. Sometimes taarabt scores a brace. Maybee you shouldnt think just week to week, that's what captain picks are for. Your logic is flawed.

Not sure you get the point here. Hits very rarely pay off over just on week. Unless it is a DGW. You have to assess whether you think one player will outscore another by more than 4pts over the period that you would have them in your team. Not sure how picking the dream team every week would help you!

no but you can't just look at it by a single week basis. you have to consider the immediate impact but also the slightly longer term: 3-7 gw period and look at it over that period too. and you have to compare it to who you'd be shipping.

ok, I get what you are saying, but being that you are looking at it over a few gw period, then why not plan amongst alternatives so that you roll into a team. Meaning, sometimes I'll bring a player a little early because even though their fixtures arent great that particular week, they will be in a couple weeks. Those are when I usually sideways transfer. I've had trouble with your logic, because things dont usually go to plan - an injury, a suspension. Nothing worse than taking a hit to then deal with that.

And if I understand Santi's point - you shouldnt focus so much on a sideways transfer for a hit - Silva can just as easily perform as well or better than walcott or santi this week. If your d is struggling, thats what you should focus on.

Yes, by taking a hit to get Silva out you are saying Silva is guaranteed to do nothing this week...whereas we don't know that. He could easily get a decent score.

Saying a hit can work out in the long run and doesn't have to work right away is all well and good. But unless you believe it's going to reap immediate rewards then you should save doing it for another week and spare yourself the 4 point hit. Saying Walcott is going to do well because he has a DGW coming up is fair enough but does it mean you MUST take a hit to get him in this week? No

Good point. Looking at the fixtures for this GW i'm struggling to see too many clean sheets though. United must have as good a chance as any, particularly if Rafael and Vidic start.

Looking at the odds United are actually the shortest price of any team to keep a clean sheet this weekend (11/10), followed by Stoke and Arsenal

😯 I literally just checked it then.

I think H2H is more comprehensive, but using GD allows everyone to easily see, where they are and why they're there. It's a bit of a pain going to all that effort for nothing 🙁

                    just checked what when?

I agree completely agree on both accounts. and h2h i feel more accurately reflects who is better as it shows results against the person you're tied with. and the rules were pretty easily accessible so it's hard for me to change the rules given people didn't read them so didn't know... but it is what it is

and yes it's disappointing having gone through all that work for nothing 🙁

*repost from end of previous page

has anyone encountered an issue where the price you thought you bought a player differs from the Purchase Price shown in the Data View tab?

I am pretty sure I bought Michu at 7.8 and Guzan at 4.6 just before the price changes on FPL and guided by Fiso but being reflected as 7.9 and 4.7 in Data View.

Is there a time lag from when you confirm the transfer to being reflected in the system?

From what I can see, Gerrard is the man for Liverpool if they want to finish in top. He got all set piece on him. Might be interesting if he continues to perform.

You can get Bale, seriously, the team they play for shouldn't come into your assessment of their FPL potential as individuals. As goalscoring mids go, he's in the same league as Fellaini/Michu/Mata and you don't want Mata.

Oh that is the least i will doing. It's possible that Nelsen, Demel, Rafael & Michu could all be ruled out tomorrow. On the other hand they could all be declared fit!

Same, or maybe Taarabt > Walcott but that would have to be part of a much bigger hit involving selling Rafael & Ba. Think that will only be for emergencies though if things go badly with the pressers tomorrow afternoon

I definitely think he could get a goal or two against Newcastle. If it turns out i can field 3 defenders this week i'll probably do Silva > Walcott. But even that is a bit of a worry. Leaves me with zero City players.

Always a pain when there's the risk of not fielding 11, but also the risk that transfers made to insure against this backfire due to it being a false alarm. I think you might as well sit tight. If Michu plays you have 1 spare and should definitely be fine, if not 50/50 perhaps.

I really don't understand why Silva has struggled for points so much, I suppose the easiest answer is lousy City finishing. I would find the prospect of playing him in a H2H frightening, but I guess that's not really based on the FPL history.

Aguero isn't as clinical and he seems to be taking less shots on goal this season. He's still creating alot of chances but no one is turning them into assists which was his bread and butter last season

    @ China Mag,

A few issues replying to your comment RE: Marveaux above...had to post as a new comment

Bloody-well hope Marveaux's time is now! With Shawcross out and question marks on 3 others... I may very well need Marveaux to step in. How I would love for him to re-pay that faith! Ha!

Held his own in the game against Utd. Another 90min under his belt will do him the world of good

Chances of any returns away at Arsenal are unlikely, but you never know, I guess

Marveaux is our only creative player (cabeye, barfa, anita, vuckic all out). He scored and assisted loads in his last full season in france. Pardiola obviously doesn't fancy him (probably due to work rate), otherwise he would have started before now for sure. I was amazed that he started at old trafford, but the fact that he did, and did so well, means he must get a run in the team now. Surely? Especially as we are down two more players for the weekend. If he does get a run in the team, then he will be gold at that price.

There was talk of him being included in a deal to get luic remy from marseille, so that might put people off getting him in, but as you already have him, your patience may truly be rewarded!!

Agree. Would think he's due an extended run in the first XI, or at least until Ben Arfa is back (can't see Pardew fielding both at the same time)

He was lively at OT. A little suspect defensively, similar to Ben Arfa last season - which may very well be the reason behind Pardew's reluctance to allow him more game time
