The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Tuesday – Part Two

Southampton battle for a point at St Mary’s as Theo Walcott endures a frustrating evening on his return to his former stamping ground. Here’s the Stock Check on Saturday’s evening kick-off…

On the Up

Gaston Ramirez
Back in the side having been kept out of the heat of the Britannia battle, the Uruguayan fired home his third goal of the season to give the Saints the advantage. Ramirez has promised much since his arrival, without really catching fire as a Fantasy asset. With Adam Lallana seemingly sidelined for the foreseeable future, however, he looks to be a key figure in Southampton’s battle for survival and my yet draw our interest when fixtures fall kinder for Nigel Adkins’ men.

Jason Puncheon
A prime budget option, Puncheon has disappointed of late having looked to be making a mockery of his price tag. Nonetheless, the assist for tonight’s goal took him to six for the season and with two goals and a record that shows he’s started the last ten league matches, Puncheon is a reliable budget midfielder who offers attacking intent. He could yet show his worth if the Saints can improve their goal output.

The Southampton Defence
Prior to conceding three at Stoke, Nigel Adkins’ side had let in just four goals in six league outings. Tonight, the new resolute defence was again on show as Southampton worked tirelessly to stifle the Arsenal threat. Nathaniel Clyne missed out again with a knee problem but he and Jose Fonte are emerging as decent budget options in the light of the new emphasis on keeping things tight.

Going Down

Theo Walcott
While the Gunners man returned the assist for Do Prado’s own goal, Walcott suffered a miserable night back at his former club. Having seen little joy in the lone striker role, he was shifted to a wide role on the introduction of Oliver Giroud. Walcott cut a forlorn figure at the whistle and this was a far cry from the stunning display that helped see off Newcastle at the weekend.

Santi Cazorla
It’s just one assist in three matches now for the playmaker who has found himself dissolve into the background in Fantasy terms, as Walcott has come to the fore. Owners of Cazorla will surely have one eye on the double fixture in Gameweek 23 and hoping for a revival, while tonight’s showing from Walcott will perhaps do little to prompt the straight swap.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

it doesn't really matter what makes sense (e.g. Arse vs City next gw) when everybody is bringing in walcott anyway

So for a 4 pointer do I do puncheon > walcott + torres > cole a week earlier than I planned?

Who do people think is the better option:

    Walcott or Cazorla?

They have both recently had big scores (both hatricks), however Walcott is cheaper.

I'm also a bit worries about Cazorla's outputs - is he the Modric of Arsenal? (assist the assister - and playing too deep)?
Obviously Walcott is currently starting up front, however when Giroud comes on doesn't he get pushed out to the right?

    Thoughts..

Walcott plays better on the right. He gets isolated and crowded out upfront, on the right he has more space and can cut in and shoot / cross.

Not sure Demel will play, but not like you won't start the big 3 every week. Wait to see about Fellaini's future. I'd maybe get Ruiz for the cheap striker. If you need more cash, I would take Hernandez as an alternative to Michu.

      Looks good.
You have a very decent front 7 (and with Pog - who isn't too bad), while having 3 decent defenders.
Also I'd back Begovic to keep a few cleanies even with their tough fixtures. Stoke have proved to be good enough at home and even on the road this year.

I'd go O'Brien... He is a season keeper and I think has cemented his spot through his performances. His price is sure to rise even more too. Only problem is short term in that he may get a rest. But only one. And only MAYBE. 🙂

it doesn’t really matter what makes sense (e.g. Arse vs City next gw) when everybody is bringing in walcott anyway

I did that for Sterling + Aguero last week so I certainly wouldn't advise against it! Anyway, Chelsea are away to Stoke next gw.

Depends on how tight money is. Will the Walcott rise(s) make a big diff to your budget?

Yes. He is doing ok and will be fine as a 3rd striker option (if that is what you're looking for).

    bego (mcCarthy)
    bassong o'brien davies (shorey nelsen)
    mata michu bale walcott (pienaar)
    ba RVP suarez

    2 FTs, .01 ITB.

    PLAN A :-

    GW22 - Pie > Nolan
    GW23 - Bassong & Bale > Sagna & Santi
GW24 - WC (bring back Bale)

    Plan B :-

    GW22 - Pie > Noble
    GW23 - Bassong & Bale > Gibbs & Santi
GW24 - WC (bring back Bale)

    Plan C :-
    GW22 - Pie & Michu > Noble & Afro
    GW23 - Bassong > any defender (7.2)
    GW24 WC

    which one do you prefer?
    thoughts are very much appreciated.

I think Nolan is looking dodgy for the DGW. I'd save that transfer to save a hit the week after. Or at least hold off until GW 23 to see if he looks dangerous.
If you were top press me for one I'd go B over A as Gibbs is just more likely. Michu out is an interesting move as Afro has the better fixture... that is a decent option and you could potentially take advantage of a price rise on an expensive defender... like Zaba/ Luiz?

yep, was thinking A a week ago but now not so convinced with Nolan. was going to do B, but plan C suddenly popped up and Afro is just too good to ignore.

i think i will a few days to ponder as i don't think gibbs/sagna/noble/nolan are going to rise just yet, maybe afro/luiz/zaba.

you sure A? was set on nolan before, but Noble somehow looks tempting now!

btw, truly a good FPL season for you so far! well done.

I'm gunna play my WC after the DGW, just made my 1st draft now:

    Begovic, Szczesny

    Turner, Cameron, Davies, O'Brien, Nelsen

    Walcott, Mata, Bale, Fellaini, Michu

    Ruiz, Torres, RVP

£0.3 spare so I should be able to afford it.

    What do you reckon?

Is it worth downgrading one of my keepers to Frederici or Guzan so I can upgrade Torres to Suarez? Rate My Team on the members section has Torres doing better than Suarez over the next 10 GWs.

I already have O'Brien, I don't have Szcezny, Turner, Nelson, Mata, Fellaini, Ruiz or Torres/ Suarez so I should be fine.

Cazorla to Walcott would allow me to get some arsenal defender (either Sagna or Gibbs)

Would that be a good idea?

Any reason why Obrien was subbed off early? Will he play next GW? Need to take out Shorey today to not lose money.

So two consecutive bad gameweeks, still looking to hold the Jan WC until after DGW:

    Vorm, Begovic
    Gibbs, Olsson, Cuellar, Shorey, Clyne
    Bale, Santi, Mata, Michu, Fellaini
    Suarez, Berbatov, Benteke

    1.9m in bank

The defense is defenitely pants. Looking to get O'Brien for Olsson or Demel for Shorey.
    Thoughts or ideas?

    Thanks! 😀
