The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Tuesday – Part Two

Southampton battle for a point at St Mary’s as Theo Walcott endures a frustrating evening on his return to his former stamping ground. Here’s the Stock Check on Saturday’s evening kick-off…

On the Up

Gaston Ramirez
Back in the side having been kept out of the heat of the Britannia battle, the Uruguayan fired home his third goal of the season to give the Saints the advantage. Ramirez has promised much since his arrival, without really catching fire as a Fantasy asset. With Adam Lallana seemingly sidelined for the foreseeable future, however, he looks to be a key figure in Southampton’s battle for survival and my yet draw our interest when fixtures fall kinder for Nigel Adkins’ men.

Jason Puncheon
A prime budget option, Puncheon has disappointed of late having looked to be making a mockery of his price tag. Nonetheless, the assist for tonight’s goal took him to six for the season and with two goals and a record that shows he’s started the last ten league matches, Puncheon is a reliable budget midfielder who offers attacking intent. He could yet show his worth if the Saints can improve their goal output.

The Southampton Defence
Prior to conceding three at Stoke, Nigel Adkins’ side had let in just four goals in six league outings. Tonight, the new resolute defence was again on show as Southampton worked tirelessly to stifle the Arsenal threat. Nathaniel Clyne missed out again with a knee problem but he and Jose Fonte are emerging as decent budget options in the light of the new emphasis on keeping things tight.

Going Down

Theo Walcott
While the Gunners man returned the assist for Do Prado’s own goal, Walcott suffered a miserable night back at his former club. Having seen little joy in the lone striker role, he was shifted to a wide role on the introduction of Oliver Giroud. Walcott cut a forlorn figure at the whistle and this was a far cry from the stunning display that helped see off Newcastle at the weekend.

Santi Cazorla
It’s just one assist in three matches now for the playmaker who has found himself dissolve into the background in Fantasy terms, as Walcott has come to the fore. Owners of Cazorla will surely have one eye on the double fixture in Gameweek 23 and hoping for a revival, while tonight’s showing from Walcott will perhaps do little to prompt the straight swap.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Luiz is in contention too but lots of options to consider 8)

The value of a WC is actually in the boring transfers. Not the heavy hitter ones which make sense on a weekly basis because they can pay off the first week, but the goalkeeper and defender ones that pay off over months in some cases.

If your defence can last til gw24 I'd wait til then.

    I have
    Foster Begovic
    Johnson Sagna Demel Olsson Davies

Think I can last just about.

Sadly nah, I'd be pleased with one. Collins missed out today and his other rival McCartney is missing with an injury so Demel was expected to play. With either back it's touch and go. For rotation he may well play one.

Does BIG Sam rotate? For what it's worth i always had him down as a manager that liked a consistent back 4 as far as possible. I'm pretty sure Demel was first choice before his illness, i didn't see the game today though. Perhaps he will get dropped?

Sadly Demel seems to have never quite got nailed on as I discovered from getting burnt a lot the last two months. GWs 11,12,13 and 16 are the red flags with rotation with O'Brien and McCartney. Players like Reid on the other hand seem to play them all. I think the fullbacks tire more so Sam rotates then.

Yeah I try to get goal threats hence Boyce dragging me down for so long. Bassong came after the points sadly, but he can wait until WC and may score again who knows.

I was VERY close to pulling the WC for a couple of weeks there. Turns out the teams I was ready to put in would have done worse than what I had anyway, so the patience paid off.

I completely agree. If you're any good at this game, you should have most of the top talents by now, or within 2 or 3 transfers away depending on injuries and suspensions. But the backline and goalies are easily forgotten

And I had Aguero chipping in with a double pointer. Need one of these guys to be the 'third man' (great movie by the way)

yes it do....i thought i saw it as "available". see my post below. Think of it this way NOT using WC will cost you at least 20pts in poor performances/hits.

The DGW players have decent fixtures after and you will be able to slowly remove them

Well with 2FT I could probably fix my defensive weaknesses. But I'll have to monitor whether Aguero is going to be fit to play in 2 weeks. I also think there could be developments later on in the window like new signings or injuries that would make having a WC handy...maybe more so than now?

    cuellar, gibbs, hughes
    mata, walcott, sidwell, michu
    rvp, suarez, fletcher

    subs: bego, sterling, g.johnson, clyne

planning to hold the Ft for the next gw..then sidwell -> noble and fletcher -> podolski, so that will only have 4 dgw..maybe taking hit for hughes -> o'brien/demel..would like to keep mata for the london derby against arsenal as these matches usually end up with high score (eg. Ars 3-3 Ful, Ars 5-2 Spurs, Spurs 2-4 Chelsea)..however a bit worried with mata playing away to stoke next gameweek, while bale play against reading..i miss all the hattricks during the christmas period (santi, bale, walcott) 🙁

Caz more nailed on for 90 minutes, Pod does get taken off an awful lot...but then he can also have explosive games so there's some strong pros to giving him a go. That said...Arsenal are pretty average sometimes and really disappointed tonight...

Evening lads, finally back from my 15 hour bus ride and back in Canada!
    Happy belated New Year!!

Any ideas of what transfers to do this week?

    Bego, Tremmel
    Sagna, Gallas(!), Hughes, Cuellar, Demel(?)
    Bale, Walcott, Michu, Fellaini, Sterling
    RVP, Suarez, Berba

    1FT, 0.9 banked

I think Gallas out is my priority this week, who should I get?

      Happy new year mate

Looks good. Any plans for getting Santi in for the DGW? I guess it would be difficult with that midfield, but you could look at something like Sterling + Berba > Santi + Cole. Does that work out? If you need a few more $$ then maybe downgrade Gallas to a 4m.

I've finally started to do ok. Up to 63,165 (3 liverpool to play) from 275,298 in 2 weeks!! Thanks mainly to walcott (c) last week. Mrs China Mag is still crushing me. 15,685, with 3 to play (including torres (c) - don't ask!!)

Thinking about playing my wildcard now in time for the DGW and pre-price rises. What do people think to this?

    A Cole > Gibbs
    J Enrique > Hughes
    Gorkks > CLyne

    Sterling > Fellaini
    Shneiderlin > Marveaux

    Defoe > Aguero

    OLD
    Begovic/Jussi
    A Cole/Nastasic/Demel/Enrique/Gorrks
    Michu/Bale/Walcott/Sterling/Shniederlin
    Ba/Defoe/RVP

    NEW
    Begovic/Jussi
    Hughes/Demel/Nastasic/Gibbs/Clyne
    Michu/Bale/Walcott/Fellaini/Marveaux
    Ba/RVP/Aguero

Losing Defoe for Aguero is a big financial hit, but I feel Man City aren't going to lose many games now, and it would be madness to bench their best forward in the business end of the season.

There's no Chelsea players either, but my league leader has Mata and i need to catch up. Can't see where else there's guaranteed pts at Chelsea

Ok I'll keep A Cole and remove Aguero for Tevez. Sound good?

        Begovic/Jussi
        A Cole/Demel/Nastasic/Gibbs/Clyne
        Michu/Bale/Walcott/Fellaini/Marveaux

If it's only 10 days, Tevez probably isn't a wise option. I'll stick with Hughes, but then my defense is looking very weak indeed

Demel then, Tomkins seems more like a utility player that can play several positions

Next game will let us know as Collins will be back, but I have a hunch it will be Demel. Big Sam seems to really like him, was excellent today and Tomkins is a Championship player.

Gunna play my WC after the DGW, I'm trying to find a cheap attacking duo who rotate well to avoid selection headaches every week, the best I've got so far is Ruiz & Walters (£12m).

Can anyone think of a better value pair who rotate well?

I'm going to play 3 at the back every week which means I only need to bench one mid/forward, if I have a cheap mid/forward duo who rotate well it will free up money, comprende?

His price tag is getting out of control isn't it. I'm glad I got at 8.9m and suffered the rests...he really is a class apart when it comes to consistency of goals/assists. I'm wondering the same with Bale...to Bale or not to Bale...it's good that his price is frozen for a while.

How strongly do you want to get Mata? Would you pay that price now for him?

I want him, but only after the DGW, but what price is he going to be in 3 weeks? 😮

I might just suck it up and hold off on him 😐

The original plan was Silva –> Santi for the DGW, then Mata on the WC, but his price is going through the roof.

To captain birdseye. I'm not sure that I would bring in marveaux on a WC, unless you have a back up plan, as his place in the team isn't assured when cabeye and barfa are back. He's certainly a great option this month though. There is some argument for keeping him as a cheap 5th midfielder (ala ferguson), even if he doesn't start.
