The Numbers Game – Budget Midfielders

Starting the season priced at just 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Raheem Sterling quickly cemented his place in many a five man midfield thanks to a consistency of game time under new Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers. Handed a first-team chance in Gameweek 2, the winger rose steadily in price to 5.7 as the bandwagon showed little sign of slowing down but a run of 16 consecutive starts was brought to an end in Gameweek 18, with Rodgers citing signs of fatigue in the youngster’s play:

With the arrival of Daniel Sturridge added to Fabio Borini’s return from injury, the attacking options are increasing for the Merseysiders – having started just three of the last six, Sterling’s owners are starting to get twitchy. He’s now dropped in price to 5.5 but, with a 17% ownership, remains the most popular sub 6.0 midfield option in the FPL game at present. As winter wildcards continue to be flourished, we take a look at the upcoming six Gameweeks and, in accordance with our Rate My Team projections, analyse the likely protagonists for those Fantasy managers eyeing up a potential transfer out…

With the Chelsea midfield a bit short at the moment I think that it’s safe to assume that Lampard will continue to get games.

    GOALS CONCEDED

Some of you may know that I have been looking into predictability, and i have done some analysis on goals conceded. Our tendency to say that there is no correlation between goals conceded and fixture difficulty has been swayed a large ammount by the performances of Swansea, Everton, MUnited, Arsenal and WBA.

    Here is a list of the teams in the order of their predictability, along with the value of their correlation;

    NEW -0.67
    SOT -0.58
    SUN -0.58
    TOT -0.57
    AVL -0.55
    LIV -0.53
    RDG -0.39
    FUL -0.36
    NOR -0.35
    STK -0.35
    WHM-0.34
    WIG -0.33
    CHE -0.29
    MCI -0.28
    WBA -0.27
    ARS -0.21
    MUN -0.14
    QPR -0.03
    EVE 0.15
    SWA 0.26

Those at the top of the list make good rotators as you can accurately play/bench them depending on the fixture. Those at the bottom you should never bench as they cannot be predicted as accurately. This is not an issue in the case of ManU, Ars, Mci or Che as I doubt you were going to bench them anyway, but owning Swansea, QPR or Evertonian defenders does seem hazardous.

    Soon to follow, scoring predictability.

That's historical performance - not predictability. To show predictability you need 2 data sets - one to predict, and the 2nd to show the predictions were correct. The variation you're showing could well be noise, not signal.

Though I would agree that there are a fair few teams who have been affected by other factors which prevent these numbers from being accurate. Crucial injuries for instance have a major impace.

That's correlation, not necessarily cause and effect.
But you could easily show predictability using your data. Divide into 2 sets - maybe even GWs and odd GWs.

Yup, but obviously there are localised effects that you are still better able to determine than statistics. Norwich played Arsenal during a low patch for Arsenal and a high patch for Norwich. Form is still an important thing.

As a former Davies owner he was a lot more annoying than Garrido.

    GOALS SCORED

    As promised here is the other half of the assessment on predictability. Whilst there are many factors that affect how many goals a team score here is their correlation to fixture difficulty;

    WIG 0.73
    SWA 0.50
    MUN 0.42
    MCI 0.41
    WBA 0.38
    WHM0.35
    STK 0.34
    LIV 0.31
    SUN 0.30
    ARS 0.30
    FUL 0.23
    EVE 0.22
    QPR 0.19
    CHE 0.12
    SOT 0.05
    AVL -0.02
    TOT -0.03
    RDG -0.05
    NOR -0.07
    NEW -0.15

Those at the top are predictable rotators, those at the bottom are not. The oddity is Chelsea whom despite scoring 8 goals against Villa have little correlation.

ah so if you had a Wigan attacker you could play them in easier fixtures and bench for harder ones? so the defence is the same?

talked about this on the defence post. Essentially with the odd exception Norwich tend to keep more CS against lesser sides, whilst Swansea are less easy to predict?

When you are rotating players, you want to be able to predict when they will score points. These figures show us which teams are predictable(score against shitty opponents) If you don't rotate in attack, don't worry.

RMT desperately needed. Very out of shape compared to all you guys on here. Bit of a newb. First season of FPL and new member on here.

    GK: Begovic (Cerny)
Def: Davies, O'brien, Huth (Reid, Barnett)
Mid: Michu, Walcott, Fellaini, Wilshere (Lucas)
    Att: Suarez, RVP, Lukaku

I WCed to bring in Wilshere, Reid, O'brien for the DGW which was ill advised. Used my FT this week to take out Zaba as soon as I saw he went off injured. Again ill advised. I have 2.9 in the bank and looking to take one, maybe two hits. I need to get rid of Lukaku, Reid, Wilshere and Lucas but which two first? And for who?

I think my two priorities are getting a mid with more goal threat than wilshere and getting reid out as i have double west ham in defence

Perhaps split into 2 groups - use 1 set to measure the correlation, then a 2nd to predict. If that holds up you're really onto something.

Hey, I havent't posted on here before but I have followed/read comments for a couple of years now. Having a great year on fantasy and was wondering thoughts on my WC team:

    Bego (Federici)
    Baines, Zab, Rafael, (Harte, Davies)
    Mata, Walcott, Bale, Fellaini, Michu
    RVP, Fletcher (Pog)
    0.7m in bank

Then in two weeks (GWK 26) change Fletcher > Suarez and Baines > 4.4m def

    Any thoughts appreiciated
