Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – The Strong – Gameweek 27

Impending blank Gameweeks for many teams produces difficult ground for our regular look at the upcoming schedules. We delve deep in our assessment of the next four to six Gameweeks, beginning with those who have promising fixtures to follow. Continued investment in a pair of solid Fantasy performers, Southampton and Chelsea, looks a valid tactic, whilst a handful of out-of-form sides are handed the chance to reverse their recent struggles:

Southampton

SAINTS27

A puzzlingly weak team selection from Mauricio Pochettino saw the Saints crash out of the FA Cup to Sunderland but Fantasy players are the real winners here as this means Southampton keep their fixture in Gameweek 29. Their next six fixtures include trips to West Ham and Crystal Palace plus home games against Norwich and Newcastle, with only the visit of Liverpool and a game at White Hart Lane to trouble what has been the best value source of Fantasy profit this season.

The ever-popular Artur Boruc is as good a pick as ever between the sticks. In defence, Calum Chambers appears to have stolen the spot from Nathaniel Clyne, though Jose Fonte is the elite moneybags option. It’s hard to look past Adam Lallana in midfield as he continues to impress in his bid for World Cup game time but up front there’s a real tussle for our affections between Jay Rodriguez and last year’s Fantasy workhorse, Rickie Lambert. Both come highly recommended.

Newcastle

NEWCASTLE27

Alan Pardew’s side have looked bereft of ideas since the departure of Yohan Cabaye and last Gameweek suffered a humiliating trouncing at the hands of Tottenham. They do, however, have a decent stretch of fixtures coming up to potentially reinstate some of their swagger. A probable blank week in Gameweek 29 is an annoyance (teams without one are thin on the ground) but the fixtures either side of that could be promising for Fantasy managers in dire need of a differential (AVL, hul, ful, CPL).

Newcastle’s defensive form has swung wildly from one end of the gauge to the other this season, with flagrant disregard for their opponents. A swing back to the positive would bring Tim Krul and the generously priced Mike Williamson onto our radars. In midfield, Hatem Ben Arfa was benched last time around after a run of three starts and looks to be in the doghouse once again, so we look to the strikers for options. Loic Remy has now served his suspension and will be absolutely integral to the remainder of Newcastle’s campaign – at one point in the season, he fired eight goals in as many games to demonstrate his potential.

Fulham

FULHAM27

We’ve yet to see anything of new managerial appointment Felix Magath but Rene Meulensteen can afford to feel a little aggrieved at his luck; Magath enjoys a much kinder fixture list than his predecessor to prove his merits. The next four fixtures for Fulham include West Brom, Cardiff and Newcastle, fixtures that could help the new manager steer the Cottagers to safety.

With a meagre three clean sheets all season, it would be a brave Fantasy manager who invested in Maarten Stekelenburg or Sascha Riether but Magath has worked with Lewis Holtby before and could coax goals and assists from him. Steve Sidwell scored his sixth goal of the season against Man United a couple of weeks ago to continue his surprise ascent up the Fantasy rankings but it may be Kostas Mitroglou who is of most interest. The Greek striker was on fine form before signing for Fulham and, if the new manager is able help him bring that form to the Premier League, we could have a genuine differential on our hands.

ALSO CONSIDER

Norwich
Another team whose Fantasy appeal is boosted by a lesser-spotted Gameweek 29 fixture, Norwich’s appeal is mostly centred around defence; they haven’t conceded a goal at home since Gameweek 19, despite hosting Man City and Newcastle. Their next six fixtures include the visits of Stoke and Sunderland as well as visits to Aston Villa and Swansea. To capitalise on their defensive form, John Ruddy is a little expensive but is second in the Fantasy standings for saves and third for keepers overall. In defence, Martin Olsson is the pick of choice, having both security of starts and price on his side. For those hoping to venture beyond the comforts of clean sheets for Canary-shaped points, Robert Snodgrass has grabbed a goal and assist in his last five games and could be on the verge of finally replicating the form that saw him rack up 152 points in his debut season last time around.

Cardiff
Ole Gunnar Solksjær’s stewardship at the Bluebirds has not been hugely successful so far, despite an agreeable schedule. There is still hope in the form of some handy home fixtures, though; Hull and Fulham pay visit in the next six, with a trip to West Brom also over that period. Such fixtures could be lucrative for David Marshall and Ben Turner in defence, whilst in midfield, Craig Noone has impressed and now looks assured of his starts. Wunderkind Mats Möller Dæhli was the subject of his manager’s praise after a stand-out display in the weekend cup los to Wigan – at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game, he could be a worthwhile budget enabler if he can nail down a start.

Chelsea
Having failed to replicate last week’s equine feat in the FA Cup, Chelsea are now the only top four team without a blank Gameweek to contend with. Their fixtures are a little mixed, with daunting home games interspersed with kinder away trips but, with their gritty form and title aspirations, the only question over investment in the Blues looks like being one of quantity: to double or triple is the quandary facing Fantasy managers. John Terry is likely to return from a muscle injury this weekend and is still the defender of choice, though Branislav Ivanovic has been marauding high up the pitch lately and been rewarded with two goals and an assist in the last three. The performances of Eden Hazard have made him impossible to ignore and searching for lucrative differentials in the Chelsea strike force has become something of a fool’s errand, especially with Fernando Torres back to steal game time from Samuel Eto’o.

    My GW29 team (If Hull wins it):-

    ---------
    Ivan Ward
    Hazard Eriksen Noone
    Ade

    (Mannone Adrian Kosc Kolarov Vlaar Mata Mirallas SaS)

    Only 6 players! If I keep my FT this week, I think I'm forced to use one of 2 FTS on Kolarov inext week, although I think I have him all covered (Vlaar). otoh, Eriksen have good fixtures but doesn't look like starting games anymore.

    What do you think, guys? Who should be on my chopping block, Kolarov or Eriksen?

      Really interested to see responses on this. I have both those players and really can't decide who to drop...gona bench Eriksen this week and see if he plays or not. If he doesn't then I think he has to be the one to go...

          I have a system in place. The way it works is I have set criteria that players must reach to stay in my team. I monitor a players stats over the last 4 weeks and as soon as they drop below that I add them to my out list and work out a strategy to get rid of them.

          Yes occasionally this can backfire and you miss a large point hall but in general it has served me well.

    Surely Hull replay being on Monday and not Tues or Wed (because of CL games), doesn't bode well for any Premier League games being rescheduled in GW 29.

        Replay is the 2nd game for Hull
        Wouldn't be the same for Sunderland.
        Also Hull game needs to be played for 6th round.

      I wouldn't have thought that it would just because they play on Monday that it'd affect when they were due to play the next round though, so if Hull win the West Ham game still has every chance of being moved. Just an opinion though.

          As this is my first season I am still learning but I have been making most of my transfers early until recently and I now have a Team Value of 113.1M which allows me to have 3 heavy hitters in attack without having to sacrifice other areas of my team. So I would say there is much to be gained from getting your transfers in early.

          I normally have a clear idea of who I want to get that GW and I will monitor Total FPL to see if they are rising or the player I am selling is dropping. I will hold of as long as possible unless someone is either rising or dropping. I also take hits to make sure I catch price rises.

    Anybody doing worse than 4 starters for GW29?

    Think it leaves me with one of these 2 moves.... Whatcha reckon?

    (A) WC in GW29 with 10-11 starters and the rest with future DGWs.

    (B) Use freebies to get 7 starters for GW29 and then WC in GW30 with a truck load of DGWers.

    Szczesny, Davis
    Terry, Kolarov, B Davies, Demel, Whittaker
    Hazard, Silva, Mirallas, Lallana, Puncheon
    Suarez, Sturridge, Benteke

    Bank 0.1m, 1 freebie, 1 WC

    Adrián
    Turner Ivanovic Koscielny
    Johnson Yaya Nolan Lallana Hazard
    Suárez Sturridge

    Just 1 question: play Johnson or Rodriguez?

      This GW? JRod definitely. Arsenal are solid at home so don't fancy Johnson to do much. Hammers defence has been punching above it's weight.

    Morning Gents,

    What do you guys think of the following?

    Eriksen > Sterling
    Kolarov > Ivanovic

    No hit.

    To be honest I have completely lost faith in Kolarov and he has a blank next week. Eriksen seems to have fallen out of favour as well.

      Keep Kolarov for one more week. I also wouldn't be losing Eriksen with his next 2 fixtures.

      Wait for news about Eriksen. I don't think hes dropped might have been small knock.

      Clichy probably starts against Barca but might get rested against Stoke = Kolarov starts.

        Both sound suggestions; I didn't know Eriksen may be carrying a knock. And if Clichy plays against Barca then you may be right it could equal Kolarov start.

        What about Tekkers (Also dead weight) > Sturridge ?

          Sturridge is season keeper for me but wouldnt get him now when blank is coming.

          What about Benteke-> Adebayor? Nice fixtures, on form and plays in gw29.

          If you really need to dump Eriksen (knock, out of favor, etc) Lallana would be mutch better option than Sterling.

      Would not get Sterling just now due to their blank in GW29. Ivanovic is a good shout though but would wait until after their CL match.

    Can't get my head around all these permutations. Overcomplicated explanations.

    Which teams' players are advisable to get in and when?

      Teams missing GW 28 - Man City, Man Utd, WBA & Sunderland
      Teams missing GW29 - Arsenal,Everton, Villa, Hull?, Liverpool, Man City, Newcastle, Sunderland, Swansea & West Ham? (If Hull get beaten on Monday them and West Ham will play in this game week)

      Here is a list the situation for double gameweeks:

      Arsenal = 1 (Swansea H)
      Aston Villa = 1 (Man City A)
      Cardiff City = 0
      Chelsea = 0
      Crystal Palace = 1 (Everton A)
      Everton = 2 (Palace H, Newcastle A)
      Fulham = 0
      Hull City = 1 (if they win tonight in FA Cup) (West Ham A)
      Liverpool = 1 (Sunderland H)
      Man City = 3 ( Sunderland H, United A, Villa H)
      Man Utd = 1 (Man City H)
      Newcastle = 0
      Norwich = 0
      Southampton = 0
      Stoke = 0
      Sunderland = 3 (Man City A, West Brom H, Liverpool A)
      Swansea = 1 (Arsenal A)
      Spurs = 0
      WBA = 1 (Sunderland A)
      West Ham = 1 (If Hull win tonight's FA Cup match) (Hull H)

      The only double gameweek confirmed is Man Utd v Man City and will take place in GW31

    Hi All,

    Any thoughts on priorities for GW29?

    boruc, kelvin
    baines, koscielny, reid, bardsley, yoshida
    hazard, mata, silva, Adam, noone
    suarez, sturridge, adebayor

    I don't think reid will play, so will likely end up with:

    boruc
    yoshida
    hazard, mata, adam, noone
    adebayor

    I am thinking about losing bardsley for olsson as he has a couple of good fixtures and then I will have 1.5M to spend elsewhere; I could use that money to do suarez --> RVP until GW32 (for the blank and the united double), or something else?

    Currently then, only eight clubs – Cardiff, Fulham, Chelsea, Tottenham, Palace, Southampton, Norwich and Stoke – definitely have matches over both Gameweek 28 and 29. For those planning out transfers, Tony Pulis’ side are the only one of those teams with a (yet to be scheduled) double Gameweek to follow.

          Ade has always taken pens at spurs, apart from when VDV was there and also this season when Soldado took over. With Soldado out, it'll def be him. Has a decent conversion rate as well if I remember rightly.

    Beginning to think GW29 will be all about the captain choice. Im think I will be shaping my team around a certain RVP.

    Anyone looking for that comforting feeling of having the armband on RVP again - just like the old times?

      I got him in my Jan WC, was wondering if I should keep him for GW28 blank or not but the GW29 captaincy decision makes it an easy choice... I'm looking forward to it, he BETTER deliver!

      The one thing I can't decide, is whether I should lose sturridge/suarez to get him.
