Versus – Mata, Hazard, Sterling and Ramsey

There may be under a week left under the 2014/15 season gets underway but for many Fantasy managers, the midfield dilemma is yet to be resolved. In the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, in particular, the player price list has handed us numerous options to consider for our five-man midfields, with ten players coming in at 9.0 or over:

In this, our latest article for members, we take a look at four of the main contenders – Eden Hazard, Aaron Ramsey, Juan Mata and Raheem Sterling – currently on Fantasy radars.

Sterling has netted in two of his last four appearances and, after notching nine times last term, is backed by many to step up for Liverpool after Luis Suarez’ departure. Ramsey’s 10 goals and nine assists in just 23 appearances last season has catapulted the Welshman into the premium bracket at 9.0, with his strike in yesterday’s Community Shield handing us a timely reminder of his talents. Mata (9.0) has been one of Louis van Gaal’s star performers in the role in “the hole” in a new 3-4-1-2 formation, whilst the 10.0-priced Hazard, despite only returning to pre-season action last week, sits in 22% of squads ahead of fixtures against promoted pair Burnley and Leicester in his first two fixtures.

Casting an eye back to last season, then, we delve into the data and compare their respective displays. First up, we assess each player’s creativity and distribution.

    Ramsey/Mata/Hazard/Siggy - Albrighton
    Rooney/Costa/Dzeko

Have 1.5m. would it be worth doing:

    A) Dzeko > Bojan and Albrighton > Sterling
    B) Costa > Sturridge and Albrighton > Hoilett
    C) Nothing.

    Thanks for any input.

I personally like the front 8 as it is (though Albrighton > Marney). Surely that 1.5m can be spent wisely in DF? It's hardly like you've cheaped out on the front 8

Albrighton is basically just a placeholder of a 4.5 as I'll go with the most likely closer to closing. But yeah I could spend it in defense, but as above, always backfires on me.

I would go for Siggy. The raft of signings made by Hughes has really put Arnie in a position where he can be rotated without weakening the side. On that basis I'd go for Siggy.

      Decent team imo

No point in using the RMT article at this time. Any comments would be most welcome guys:

    Bego - 4.0
    Luis - Evans - Mariappa - Colo - Wisdom
    Mata - Rambo - Sterling - Siggy - Marney
    Costa - Roon - Dzeko

I'm putting my faith in Pulis' comments about Mariappa and assuming he's going to be a starter (don't need him v's Arse anyway). Not too bothered about Wisdom, just need him for GW1 when Newc & CPL have tough fixtures.
Still struggling over Dzeko & Jovetic, but I think that Dzeko offers (slightly) more security of starts over the long term.
I guess I'll ship Bego around GW12 for another 5.0 keeper. Happy not to have the hassle of rotation to be honest.

    Anything you would cahnge?

I think mariappa should be first choice too.

Jovetic is getting a lot of chances when he's playing, dzeko has looked nonexistant. If you are going long term it's dzeko, short term - jovetic.

Yeah it looks good, and when chelsea keep a cleansheet everyone gets 1 point for chelsea midfielders, so you only gain 3 🙂

As we move closer and closer to deadline, are we overlooking something as we fixate on the fixtures game and how to shave 0.5m here and there, worry about rotations and potential bargains.

Fact is we can only haphazardly make 'educated' guesses at this. But one fact that is getting hard to ignore for me is...

...the fact that Liverpool and City attacks are basically fixture proof. I don't think there's a need to back this up with alot of stats and data.

No Suarez definitely is a big change for LFC, but in seasons past, we've seen how other players step up from the shadow of a big player leaving the club. There's no reason why Coutinho can't pick up some slack and dictate play (while I still have reservations over his fantasy potential) and build on the great work last season.

Just sharing my feelings at the moment as I'm starting to worry about not being a Liverpool and City striker at the start, considering how popular they are across the game.

I agree Shifty, however in every team something has to give, and usually its 'attacking cover' from one particular big team. For me I'm currently missing an Arsenal attacker but I have one from every other top 6 side including 2 from United.

Definitely agree that inevitably, there will be some sort of compromise. Fabregas over Hazard, Ramsey over Sanchez, Henderson over Sterling. I just feel that in the big teams especially, 'bargains' are few and far between (Henderson just MIGHT be the only one).

I'm starting to see the Wisdom (:D) of Jonty's hot topic re: filling team with players from the top attacking sides. We've already seen the progression from earlier in pre season where likes of Tadic, Pelle, De Jong, Arnautovic were in plenty of teams. Not saying they won't do well...but I prefer to play the percentages when there's so much flux at start of season with the transfer window still open and teams finding their feet

I think that's a great front 8, but I would question whether Henderson is really a better pick than Sterling even at 2.5m less? Of course, it would allow a better defence. But as I was just replying to Pepereina Pizza below, I tend to build my squad around my attack...which just usually ends up with a lean defence.

Not saying my strategy is the best, but I just think maybe the small decisions like Jovetic over Dzeko to save 0.5m is being a bit too clever and if we want to pick players from City and Liverpool, i would have no hesitation paying the premium even if it means sacrificing in defence abit.

Might be alone in this 😀

Its a tough one and in order to pay the extra I'd need to make massive sacrifices at the back. Of course that could still prove to be worthwhile. I don't mind the concept of 'coverage' and in order to cover yourself completely sometimes the you have to go with the cheaper alternative (Hendo over Sterling etc).

Yea I understand completely. I'm looking at my uninspiring defence at the moment while I reply 🙂

It could also be tempting to go with complete 'attacking cover' However I'm not convinced it will work. Unless Henderson really does step up and becomes heavily involved in Liverpools attack.

        Mata Ramsey Eriksen Henderson (4.5m)
        Rooney Costa Jovetic

It's pretty clear to me: Sturridge costs 1m more than Wayne Rooney, Yaya costs more than any mid.

When you can get value at 9m (ramsey/mata/fab/dzeko/giroud), it makes less sense to splurge on Yaya/Sturridge because you have to trade in a second (any 9m player name here) for a template Siggy or a punt.

It's going to take a repeat performance for people to buy into that. What are the other options? Invest in Aguero now? no thanks.

I haven't mentioned Silva because he's made of paper, and City rotates more than any other team. Nasri, to my eye, is an expensive punt.

I completely agree with this, as in certain circumstances there are "value" players but not because of pure pricing reasons (Yaya aside). If Aguero were fit and banging them in in preseason, we'd see alot less Dzekos and alot of Agueros.

I was coming more from the lines of shaving off $ from attack just to have a better defence for rotation purposes...which is flawed imo. I always build my team around the attack, not the other way around. To each his own I guess, but I would much rather risk going big and chasing assists and goals rather than hoping my defenders don't concede in the 93rd minute.

    CURRENT defenders:

    Cahill (6.5) Ward (5.0) PvA (4.5) Bartley (4.0) Wisdom (4.0)

I have .5m ITB and want to upgrade 1 defender.
Keepers are Bego/Green, and I'm settled on those two for now, not looking to change them.

Give me 1 upgrade suggestion, and MAKE THE CASE for why that's an improvement. Go!
(secret bonus option: keep as is and start season with .5m ITB)

I would upgrade Bartley to Chambers, play Chambers GW1, hope Arsenal keep a CS, watch the casuals jump on hi, ride the price rise then sell for another 4.5 def who is nailed in GW2 or 3.

I've come back to this question several times over the last few days and it's Bartley who will get the axe, I think.

I hate to premeditate a FT (for a 4.5m defender no less) but the angle is good.

Have been looking at Coloccini/Haidara ... any thoughts on Newcastle prospects out there?

one of 4m ---> colo (rotation with pva)

pva ---> clyne (great fixtures + attacking threat)

Been burned at least once by Clyne injuries, but maybe I should give him another chance. I like PVA because he's my "one punt"; the only player in my team with (effectively) no PL experience

I'll play with the season ticker... thanks again, buddy!

Mark my words, Dzecko will be the one who is dropped when Aguero returns, not Jovetic. Despite people saying Dzecko provides a balance next to Aguero because Jovetic and Aguero are too similar, I can see Pelligrini getting Jovetic and Augero working together spectacular ly.

He will most likely start in my team in place of Dzeko, but I will be keeping 0.5 handy to upgrade to one of the many 8.5s that may hit form.

Yeah I also don't buy the Dzeko will be nailed on argument. Jovetic didn't have much luck last year with injuries and he is less of a donkey player which is probably a good thing. I see no reason why Aguero can't lead the line with Jovetic in behind.
