Preamble

The Pre-Match Preamble – Gameweek 22

The obvious thing to do was to swoop for Sergio Aguero immediately. That would have ensured that there was little chance of a couple of price rises working as factors to persuade me to ignore Aguero come today’s 11.30 gong.

Predictably, that was far too straightforward for me. Readers of these words on a regular basis will know that, when presented with a crossroads, the path signposted the “Blatantly Obvious Avenue” never quite looks as welcoming as the heady sights offered by “Too Clever By Half Street”, even though I suspect the latter is a cul-de-sac.

This morning, having watched Aguero rise in price twice this week, my Fantasy Sat Nav is again suggesting I take an unexpected turn. Instead of trading Diego Costa at Swansea with his questionable away form for the undoubted and essential talents of Aguero at home to Arsenal, I’m exploring unwise alternatives.

Aaron Cresswell’s clean sheet for West Ham at home to Hull looks fairly assured and that’s tempted me to consider bringing him into my back three. The method to my madness suggests that Cresswell’s clean sheet would allow me to retain Costa at Swansea: Aguero would have to outscore Cresswell’s return against Hull, while I suspect Costa has a good chance of bettering Alan Hutton’s tally against Liverpool: the Villa man is my only defensive option should I make the Costa to Aguero trade.

If that sounds convoluted, it’s probably because it is. I’m overthinking a situation which, in reality, is a simple case of trading like for like. Get Costa out and get the superior Aguero in my frontline. More significantly, that would allow me to put the armband on the Argentine. Job done. Let’s watch the points roll in.

Instead, I’m about to rely on Costa’s ropey away form, allow a budget striker to wear my armband and, once again, risk my sanity on one of Big Sam’s charges.

As always, I’ve found a way to justify it. Aguero couldn’t inflict any damage on a tired and obliging Everton defence in 24 minutes – why would he blitz Arsenal with a two-goal salvo a week later? Wenger surely won’t allow his side to ship six goals this time?

Cresswell is up against a wounded Hull outfit who are likely to rely on the deadly pair of Gaston Ramirez and Sone Aluko for goals. Only this week, Big Sam was talking up the Hammers’ quest for clean sheets: a shut-out is brewing down in East London.

Then there’s Harry Kane – he will surely produce at home to a Sunderland side who appear to be bereft of a midfield enforcer. The Black Cats’ back four could be largely unprotected and Kane has the form and ability to punish that. The armband is safe with Harry.

Finally, there’s Costa. My dear old Diego. He’s served me well – scoring just frequently enough for me to ward off those claims that my investment has been wasted, my faith misplaced. He could do a job at Swansea, coupled with Cresswell’s returns, to outperform Aguero and Hutton.

I’ve talked myself into this. I’ve watched Aguero’s price rise to 12.5, almost to help justify taking this route. If I get it right, the rewards will likely be a handful of points and the smug satisfaction that I’d avoided doing the obvious. Get it wrong and the punishment could potentially be catastrophic – a severe spanking that even my Wildcard will struggle to salve.

I seem to openly invite “Mr Disappointment” into my weekends through the medium of my Fantasy Football team. I leave the door ajar, make his bed and put the kettle on. Let’s see if he comes knocking this time.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Just been talking to a WBA fan, just a few things he said

    3) Poc has apparently been carrying a knock, hence why Baird has been playing

Hi folks, I'm 19 and into writing football articles for an online website and magazine. The topic that interests me this time is "England's footballing failure at National stage"
Given that I'm 19 and dont live in Europe I'd be pretty naive compared to you guys. I'd love to have the up close personal insights of the English contingent on here.
Here are some points I've penned down.

    1) Media: The English media goes bonkers when you discover a new talent and take half the time to bring that same talent down. A Harry Kane or a Berahino could be an Aaron Lennon waiting to happen. The Germans produce much more efficient players within their ranks but their glory seems to be gradual. The English media puts immense pressure on the young contingent settting goals which are sometimes impossible to achieve. Should the media handle things differently? Should sports, which is a national representation of your country, be handled in a more efficient way rather then try and sell their news?

    2) Attitude: The second interesting part would be the attitude. Can a 20-23 year be expected to handle that fame? A developing prospect hampered by money? Jack Rodwell much? The huge money thrown around also brings a burden of price tag on the youngsters. Are the English youth footballers focused enough? I've seen AOC, Wilshere and Ramsey go on about Alexis's work rate. I guess everyone is expected to do that. The english stars seem to not grasp enough from their international counterparts. You say Alexis keeps running? Maybe when you have time from showing your middle finger to the public and getting into unnecessary arguments on field you'd be able to concentrate more.

    3) Are the English managers good enough? Pulis, I believe should have gotten the Ballon d'or for keeping Palace up after the shambles they were left in. Maybe even 'arry and Woy are decent. But why is there no world class english manager?

    4) Abroad: Why is the English contingent afraid to step outside their own territory? The south americans switched continents and have a star studded national team. Maybe a spell in Germany or Spain can enhance your tactical knowledge.

    5) Wage: The English players are overpaid. As lovely as Rooney is to watch he doesn't deserve 300,000 pounds a week. As promising a talent as Shaw is, he shouldn't be getting over 50,000 pounds a week. Young earns double of what reus earns. Why cant we switch to a performance based contract wherein the fixed part would be minimal and the variable part would be huge based on the performances?

I hope you guys could help me out here. Trust me an English view would be golden out here. I'm really sorry as I don't possess much information about smaller clubs. I'd like to know the views of the fans of the smaller clubs on how money is messing up your respective clubs and the talents.

Good luck. I believe the main reason to be the attitude and how plauers don't want to move out of their comfort zone and are happy playing in England rather than challenging themselves elsewhere. That said, we have no god given right to win these tournaments and don't do all that bad. I also think that grass roots football is a shambles and also that our good young players get thrown in to the senior team and pressured too soon. You should look to keep them in the Under 21s and get them used to winning tournaments as a team as opposed to throwing them straight in like Walcott, Barkley et al.

Apparently the academy system is at odds with local amateur clubs, they don't work with them and see them as rivals, as soon as a young lad signs up to an academy he's prohibited from playing for anyone else.

Reasons to wait another two weeks for the WC:

Will Zouma keep bis place against City?
Will Chambers or Bellerin play? - (Chambers might just be not fit tomorrow)
Will Baird keep bis place with the transferwindow still open until february.
    Will Mané be back soon?
    Will Cameron keep bis place?
Will Fabregas step up and convince me of getting rid of Costa?
    Will Walcott start vs Villa?
Will Silva play a little deeper or even on the wing in a 442 with Dzeko Aguero Jovetic all back?
Will the Seahawks win the superbowl yet again?

I hate it when players grab the ball after falling before the whistle is blown assuming that there is a foul. Pressures refs unnecessarily. They should get yellow or red cards for an intentional hand ball.

The ref shouldn't be pressured into it and if he feels it's not a foul I agree he should card then. That would stop them doing it a second time.

Ha, love this tweet from Opta:

@OptaJoe: 6 - Tony Pulis has won six of his last nine Premier League game as a manager, drawing two and losing just one. Repeating.
