Scout Picks

Scout Picks Squad – Gameweek 1

As Mark mentioned yesterday, the new tweaks to our Scout Picks selection process means that every Tuesday, we’ll be rolling out a squad of players that encompass many of the ongoing debates behind the scenes. This list of players also includes some names in contention for a place in our Spot the Differential article, though will, of course, be subject to change, depending on the injury situation as each week progresses.

For Gameweek 1, though, here’s our current thinking…

Goalkeepers

Leicester’s home clash with Sunderland brings both Kasper Schmeichel and Costel Pantilimon onto our radar. The Foxes racked up five clean sheets in their last seven in 2014/15 and with new manager Claudio Ranieri keeping faith in a 3-4-1-2 set-up, they’ll be hoping for continuity against a Black Cats side that scored just 15 times on their travels last term. Pantilimon’s average of 4.4 points per appearance looks set to be boosted further by the changes to the BPS which reward saves, whilst Sunderland’s record on the road last year (six clean sheets, as opposed to five at home) indicates they can shut up shop away from the Stadium of Light. Bournemouth’s Artur Boruc is another name being bandied about, given that visitors Villa scored 13 away goals over 2014/15 – fewer than any other side.

Defenders

We have dilemmas in the Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton defences ahead of their home clashes. Laurent Koscielny is pricier than Hector Bellerin (6.0 to 5.5) and should benefit from the change to the BPS rules on Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions, though Bellerin seems to have edged ahead of Mathieu Debuchy for the right-back berth and surely did enough against Chelsea to maintain his role for the visit of West Ham on Sunday.

Branislav Ivanovic’s attacking potential may well bring him into the Picks ahead of team-mate Cesar Azplicueta, though the latter’s price of 6.0, compared to the Serbian’s 7.0, obviously helps free up cash for further up the field.

Phil Jagielka and Seamus Coleman entertain Watford at Goodison before the schedule turns against Everton. Jagielka remains cheaper than the right-back, at 5.5 to 6.0, and, like Koscielny, will be favoured by the BPS change, though Coleman’s raids down the right will surely trouble the Hornets.

Simon Francis and Leandro Bacuna also come into contention ahead of Bournemouth’s home encounter with Villa. At 4.5, Francis produced more key passes than any defender in the Championship last year, whilst Bacuna (5.0) has been stationed on the right of midfield over the pre-season, potentially affording us an out-of-position option at the back.

Midfielders

In the centre of the park, a number of premium assets are jostling for our attention. For Arsenal, Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil are the chief protagonists. Walcott’s start up front in the Community Shield suggests he’s edged ahead of Olivier Giroud for the lone striker role, though his withdrawal on 66 minutes at Wembley is a worry. Ozil, meanwhile, was arguably the most in-form Arsenal player over the summer and looks nailed on, regardless.

Eden Hazard – leader of this week’s Captain Poll – looks the safest route into Chelsea’s attack, with concerns once again hovering over Diego Costa’s hamstring. City duo Raheem Sterling and David Silva have both shone in pre-season and with doubts over Sergio Aguero’s availability, the City midfield may be the best option here. Southampton’s Sadio Mane was second only to Alexis Sanchez for minutes per goal amongst midfielders last year and could easily run riot against Newcastle’s dodgy defence on Sunday.

Further down the price bracket, Matt Ritchie (15 goals, 17 assists last year) faces a Villa side that conceded more than two goals per match under Tim Sherwood, whilst Scott Sinclair and Riyad Mahrez have both impressed in recent pre-season outings and come in at just 5.0 and 5.5 respectively. Concerns over the fitness of Yohan Cabaye and Yannick Bolasie elevate Jason Puncheon in our thinking for Palace’s trip to Carrow Road.

Forwards

At present, we’re going without Sergio Aguero unless he’s passed fit by Manuel Pellegrini on Friday afternoon. Diego Costa’s hamstring is causing concern – the Spain international was passed fit by Jose Mourinho prior to Sunday’s Community Shield only to be ruled out injured on the day. Costa scored five goals against weekend opponents Swansea last year, though, so we’re keeping an eye on Mourinho’s press briefing before making any decisions here.

Wayne Rooney is set to lead the line for United at home to Spurs. Second only to Hazard in the Captain Poll, he seems a safer option for the Red Devils, with new boy Memphis Depay perhaps taking time to settle. Romelu Lukaku looks poised to recover from a hamstring problem as the Toffees welcome Watford to Goodison and, like Graziano Pelle, comes in at 8.0. The duo have scored ten times between them in pre-season, with the Italian leading the way by six strikes to four. Finally, Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson – at just 5.5 – is our preferred budget forward and his pace should pose Villa’s dodgy defence problems aplenty.

Community Champion

Representing the Community in Gameweek 1 will be regular poster Fuzzy Warbles, who is now in his sixth FPL season. Although he has never breached the top 10,000 he came mighty close in 2010/11 with a rank of 10,085. Last season saw a return to form with a rank of 24,104, some 50,000 places higher than his 2013/14 tally.

I have all those midfielders, Ritchie, Walcott, Hazard, Mane, and Sterling, so suffice to say I'm pretty pleased right now. I've also got Ivanovic and Rooney.

Who should I captain between all these guys? I'm on the safe pick Hazard, but considering Sterling and Rooney too

        Ruddy (Rudd)

        Ivanovic-Huth-O'Shea (Simpson, Targett)

        Hazard-Walcott-Sterling-Mane-Ritchie

        Rooney-Sakho (Graham)

Defense is sorta light weight but the rest makes up for it...and I think Ivanovic can get me enough defensive points

Hey everyone. This is my first ever post! Looking fwd to an exciting season ahead. I've been through a few changes but this is where I'm at. Any advice most appreciated! I'm worried about non-rotating goalies and, of course, the Aguero issue too. Thanks!

Guys I need some advice my first team is:

    Cech
    Ivan | Clyne | Shaw
    Haz | Hendo | Ozil | Mane
    Wilson | Roo | Benteke (0.5 ITB)

I just realised I have too many Liverpool players is that bad? Also is there anyone else I should change?

generally don't be scared to double up defenders if you think the players will do well

the real big downside is that you can only have one arsenal attacker...if they look hot you won't be wanting to sell ozil to buy walcott (say)

because of this I sometimes double up on cheap defenders but I'm less likely to do it for the best attacking sides

Not sure about double up on Arsenal defense with Cech and Kosc, you would probably be better going to Courtois for Chelsea cover or getting some cheaper keepers for the save points.

      B.
I wouldn't trust defoe. Sakho can be trusted. played very well last season against big and small teams alike. He is also now the only fit striker (not that he was in danger of being replaced)

Arsenal are looking better for clean sheets with cech in goals (not that they will get more clean sheets than chelsea, but the extra 0.5 comes at little to no cost).

Ritchie is a punt and good work out a treat for you, particularly in GW1.

thanks, would you downgrade ritchie to sinclair as my defence is looking weak, 3, 4.5s and 2 5s, 0.5 short of mertz... could downgrade tadic to lens. thanks mate

I would try to cut some money off other parts of my team. reply with your team and I can try to help?

ye agreed, although sinclair has looked awesome in preaseaon, against bad sides to be fair... you could look at sakho for pool as a defender for 5mill option...

best imo is surman... wanyama is template

            my team

            ruddy/butland

            cedric,tobya/sakho, francis, huth, coates

            ozil, tadic, ritchie, wally, haz

Strike force is strong. Benteke might take a short while to settle in but he is a very talented goalscorer.
Wally only has 2-3 games nailed for him. So for the long term I would go with the safer option of cazorla; Penalty, corner and free kick taker. But Walcott will amost certainly score highly when he plays.

Ozil has been brilliant in pre season. I would sitll go with cazorla over him. Cazorla shows up in the big games and can keep the team ticking over. Cazorla and a CM cannot be as easily neutralised as the CAM of Ozil.

I would go with Panillimon/fabianski + 4.0. much more reliable.

I am slightly worried for the pair of us with Cedric. He did not play in Southampton's euro qualifier against Vitese, is he 100% nailed on?

Francis is a good player, but 2 bournemouth players?

thanks, ye like tekkers, far too many options in pools mid, ,ike milner , ibe, lallana, firminio etc, so thought tekkers is easiest option to choose, but may need couple of games, may go one week punt on lukaku. upgrading to sanchez when he is back. but i see your point on caz, he ticks along nicely.

worried i may not have city cover, could turn wally into sterling...

ye cedric is definitley 100 percent nailed...

ye like franis due to assist potential, but may downgrade him to saylor to get mertz in for toby...

Regarding Palace.. There are some weird rationalisations on here for not gettin their attackers:
    Consensus on here:

Everyone is expecting a big season for them on the attacking front.
Puncheon is priced at a bargain 6.0 and will keep all left footed set pieces
Dont plan too far ahead with attackers (Palace opening fixtures nor ARS AVL)
MCI and tot have sh!te defenses(Palace's "extremely tough run of 3 games after the above icludes both these fixtures)
It's better punting on a experienced EPL player from a better side rather than a promoted one(yet people have Ritchie @6 over puncheon)
Great fixtures in the long term for cheap players if other priorities come up and you cat transfer out(great run post GW 6)

Yet the consensus is: Avoid Palace attackers.
    Weird really

    Alderweireld, Bellerin, Martin, Francis, Coates

    Ritchie, Mane, Fabregas, Walcott, Henderson

    Rooney, Kane, Sakho

I have 1m in the bank and am planning a WC after GW4. I'm planning on transferring Aguero in GW4. I'm happy with my team except I'm not sure on my defence.

    Thanks in advance

Final RMT as I'm going on holiday tomorrow. Any suggestions highly appreciated.

    Ruddy - Rudd
    Azpi - Cedric - Jenkinson - Richards - Huth
    Fabs - Özil - Sterling - Milner - 4.5
    Rooney - Kane- Pelle

    0.5 ITB

Aguero plan: Rooney and one of Pelle/Kane -> Kun and 6/5.5. It gives me some time to see likes of Deeney, Wilson and other new guys in action, before i'll need to pick. If Kane will be the one that'll be gonr, i'll have funds for one of Hazard/Sanchez too

Still not sure about 5th mid, Westwood was at this spot all the time, but after new signings hes not longer nailed i guess. Who would you recommend? Surman? Bentaleb?

Should i save the remaining 0.5 or use it already? If so, where?
    Thx in advance

      Very solid.

Richards to 4.0 and Jenko to Merte maybe.

Personally I would go Pelle to Sakho in order to fund Haz for Fab, but nothing wrong with your choice.

    Schmieichel (Schwarzer)

    Ivanovic Clyne Jagielka (Hutton) (Ward)

    Walcott Henderson Hazard(c) Depay (Wanyama)

    Wilson (Callum) Giroud(vc) Kane

Any advice? Anyone not in my team that you think should be? Cheers.

Gru will be rotated this season. Avoid for now.

Rest looks good although I would go:

      - Clyne to Merte
      - Theo to Ozil
      - Depay to Sterling
      - Gru - Rooney
      - Iva to Azpi (if u need the funds for Roo)
      - Ward - Huth
      - Hutton to 4.0

Hendo. 100% nailed and on set pieces.

We dont know how Chadli's minutes will look like.
      Siggy seems a little overpriced.

Won't Benteke take penalties and Firmino take corners + freek kicks?

What set pieces are we certain about Hendo taking?

With the info we have, Hendo is on Set's.

Benteke and Firmino could be on them, but thats only an assumption.

Hendo is team captain and will at least keep pens IMO.

Hey guys, looking to free up £1.0m.

Azpi down to a 5.0, Sterling down to Mane (rather avoid this), or a third option?

    Stekelenburg - (Butland)

    Azpi - Cedric - Bellerin - (O'Shea) - (4.0 Saylor/Pudil?)

    Özil - Walcott - Fabregas - Sterling - Sinclair

    Rooney - Lukaku - (Sakho)

Eventual plan is Lukaku to Benteke GW2 and Rooney to Aguero GW4.

    Thanks!

      Sakho > 5.5?
Stekel > 4.5 / Sinclair > 4.5? (You have Cedric covering SOT anyway, not sure of the double up)

Stek -> Ruddy. Rotate with butland. Alternatively jsut switch to fab/pantilimon + 4.0.
Bellerin Isn't absolutely nailed on so perhaps mertesacker is the better option.
Cazorla is a safer bet than ozil.

I agree about Bellerin, I've been umming and erring about him all week.

I reckon Özil will have a great season though, and think arguably more nailed on too. Their points per minute were almost identical last season, I'm backing Özil.

Ozil wasn't playing for the horrid start arsenal had. I believe it was there worst start for over half a dozen years.

Cazorla and the rest of teh arsenal team didn't get too many points then.

Bare that in mind when you consider points per minute

Adrian + Boruc: 46.44 points (14 home games)
Adrian + Schmeichel: 45.68 points (9 home games)

Is anyone else having trouble getting comfortable with the guys at 8.0 - 9.0? I just don't love any of the Bentekes, Arsenal MF, Sterlings, Fabs, Pelles.

find myself liking the cheapies and studs better. Is this crazy if Aguero plays game 1??

Now the Tinkerman's taking over. My draft #250...

    Fabiansky, Hennesey
    Cedric, Azpi, Mert, Distin, Rangel
    Ozil, Tadic, Wally, Fab, Bentaleb
    Rooney, Benteke, Pelle

    0.5 ITB.
What do you think of the team?
    Should I change
    A. Distin -> Francis; Wally -> Hendo/Mane?
    B. Keep as is.
    C. Any other options you suggest.

I would prefer Mane instead of Tadic imo, I also don't trust Distin you might be better off with Francis although i'm not entirely sure if he is nailed on. You also have Fabianski so I guess you could change Rangel to a different team maybe?

Hey guys I think I am ready to go after a lot of tinkering 🙂

    GW1 team will be:

    Schmeichel

    Merte | Ivan | Shaw

    Depay | Haz (C) | Hendo | Ozil

    Roo | Wilson | Benteke

Subs: Schwarzer, Saylor, Baker, Fletcher (Basically bench fodder) (1.0 ITB)

Thoughts: Schmei < Panti, Wilson < ??, Benteke < Kane

I also plan to WC for GWK 4 but that will be a problem for a later date (Y)

Any extra criticisms or anything would be of great help! 🙂

I would choose Cedric because I still think they will be a good team it's obv not a like for like replacement but he does have good potential for attacking as well as defensive returns
