Dugout Discussion – Hungary vs Belgium

Sunday’s third and final fixture sees Hungary and Belgium do battle for the right to take on Wales in the Euro 2016 quarter-finals.

Having bounced back from an opening loss to Italy with wins over Republic of Ireland and Sweden, Belgium are regarded as favourites for the top half of the draw.

The Red Devils were placed fourth for shots on goal over the group stages, though found the net on just four occasions with big-hitters Kevin de Bruyne and Eden Hazard yet to open their accounts in the tournament.

Bernd Storck’s side will be no pushovers, though. Despite firing far less attempts than their opponents across the first three matches (35 to 56), Hungary registered just one attempt on target fewer, firing 16 to Belgium’s 17.

Joint-top scorers with Wales for the group stages, their three-goal salvo against Portugal last time out certainly suggests this evening’s match could be tighter than many expect.

          There is the point that they consider the scorer now as the creator of the chance.

          If they wanted to say that it stays with the last passer, they could have just left this paragraph out altogether (as do all assist rules that don't have assist removed for the scorer having dribbled his way to the scoring chance), because in that case it would serve no cause whatsoever.

          I'm not saying that that rule is clear, on the contrary, I've all the time been saying it is unclear. But it does signal that in case where a player dribbles his way to the scoring chance the assist will not be given. This could have of course been said clearer by writing "no assist is given _if_ the goalscorer creates..." But I've never accused McD of making their rules too clear.

            If they mean that they should have put it in the rules. Now it only says that assist is given to player who delivers a final pass and the scorer cant get a assist for making himself a chance. Its not written unclearly or anything.

            Rules should be rules and the game should play out as there is written. Whats the point of a game otherwise?

              Sorry, but since it has earlier been stated only that a player _passing_ the ball or _shooting_ so that goal is scored from a direct rebound, can get the assist, and a player cannot actually pass the ball to himself (unless we consider this is exactly what Hazard did, in which case there is no debate, no KDB assist because the final pass was from Hazard himself), there is absolutely no need to add that paragraph about no assist given to the player who creates the scoring chance himself by _dribbling_ (since a dribble is not considered an assist in the first place), unless it means that the person considered assisting the goal has changed by the dribble that creates the chance.

              The rules are rules and game is going by the rules, 100%. There is no problem with that. It is only that the rules are not clear. Just because you interpret them differently doesn't mean that the McD's people who have written them were wrong about them.

                No. I get the point that maybe it shouldnt be there, but as it is written now it means that the scorer dont get the assist if he creates himself a chance. It cannot be understood any other way than that because thats whats it says:

                No assist is given TO a player WHO creates HIS own goalscoring opportunity (e.g. solo run/dribble).

                Nothing is said about other player getting assist or not int that sentance or other sentances after that. As it is written out now, not giving KDB the assist was wrong and rulebreaking.

    Think I've come up with a good use of my 4 FT, with my wildcard ready to be used for the semi finals.

    This is what I currently have:

    Hennessey / DDG
    Hector / Jed / Taylor / Dier / Meunier
    KDB / Kroos / Rakitic / Perisic / Payet
    Bale / Muller / Lukaku

    The transfers I am thinking of doing are:

    Rakitic > Hazard
    Perisic > Draxler
    Muller > Gomez
    Lukaku > Griezzman

    Unless I have made an error in my calculations, I should have enough to do this unless their are massive price changes, as I have 0.3m in the bank.

    Leaves me with 1 player on MD1, 6 on MD2, 5 on MD3 assuming Spain go through, and 3 on MD4.

    Any thoughts? Should I try and get another player on day 1?

          Maybe, but my main point really wasn't about how the rule should be interpreted, but that the rule is so vague that its interpretation by McD's is hard to predict, and it is a mistake to assume that the interpretation will be the one that makes intuitively the most sense to us, because we're accustomed to some other, very different rules.

            Point taken. Problem though with this rule ('No assist is given to a player who creates his own goalscoring opportunity (e.g. solo run/dribble') is that it is extremely subjective, leaving a lot of questions unanswered.

            I mean, who is to know what constitutes a solo run/dribble? Every person can have his or her own interpretation regarding this itself.

    Italy vs Austria update:

    Italy: 173 + Ramos/Juanfran/Giaccherini/Sturridge x2
    *Austria: 154 + Nolito/Walker/Alli x3/Vardy

    *Austria have 3 captain switches to make, all of which must fall on an England player (Dier/Walker/Alli for one. Walker/Alli/Vardy for another. And Dier/Alli for the last)

    An Alli blank and a Spain shutout ought to seal the deal 🙂

      He played well, but tonight he was turbo boosting against an open Hungary side. He completed more dribbles tonight than any other player had in the whole tournament before today.

      Long story short:

      'No assist is given to a player who creates his own goalscoring opportunity (e.g. solo run/dribble).'

      Apparently the fact that Hazard dribbled three defenders and went on to score meant that it he who created the opportunity for himself.

            This is really the big problem with that rule. There is always something left to subjective assessment in the rules - think about the assist rule in FPL last season, with assist being given after a deflection or block if the ball ends up where the passer of the ball originally tried to get it, which was very controversial rule - but McD's always adds some parts of rules that are extremely suspect to that.

              Which a shame really because the McD's website has been running pretty smoothly. I've been enjoying the game much more than I would have expected after what I experienced in WC '14.
