The Stock Check – Gameweek 1 – Monday

Chelsea’s stars of 2014/15 rise to the occasion at Stamford Bridge as both Diego Costa and Eden Hazard deliver goals to earn Antonio Conte a victory in his first Premier League outing. Here’s the final Stock Check of Gameweek 1.

On the Rise

Eden Hazard
The Belgian’s spot-kick was hugely significant, not least because it saw Hazard deliver in Gameweek 1, but also because it appears to confirm him as Chelsea’s designated penalty taker. That’s something of a puzzle given that Oscar took one in pre-season with Hazard on the pitch. Now with penalties secured, Hazard’s stock, like that of Riyad Mahrez, has enjoyed a major boost.

Diego Costa
Owned by just 7% of FPL managers, Costa’s fine winning strike rolled us back to the 2014/15 campaign and offered a reminder of his clinical finishing ability. His future at Chelsea is far from assured but if he can hint at returning to his debut season strike rate, he may yet enter our thinking. However, an early booking and a reckless challenge on Adrian also demonstrated just why we have to show extreme caution.

Cesar Azpilicueta
The Spanish full-back has significantly improved his attacking game and is now offering just as much from the left as Branislav Ivanovic on the right. Unlike the Serb, Azpilicueta’s starting role has rarely come under question and with no rival for his position, he continues to stand out as the key option in Antonio Conte’s defence. Tonight’s assist and bonus only underlined that further.

James Collins
Slaven Bilic opted for the Welsh warhorse over Angelo Ogbonna, potentially unlocking a 4.5 option in West Ham’s backline. That already brought Collins to our attention, even before his dramatic blast from a West Ham corner. A start against AFC Bournemouth should be guaranteed but it remains if he can hold off Ogbonna in the long-term.

In Decline

Andre Ayew
The Ghanaian’s West Ham bow lasted just 34 minutes before he gave way with a thigh problem. That was a blow to his 9.5% ownership who must now wait anxiously to see if he can recover for Sunday’s potentially profitable meeting with the Bournemouth defence. With Payet a likely starter, Bilic won’t need to take a risk with his new signing.

Michail Antonio
Charged with containing Hazard, he was always in for a testing evening. Seemingly consigned to a right-back role with Bilic collecting options on the flanks, Antonio was hooked shortly after conceding the early second-half penalty. His start against AFC Bournemouth could be in doubt – his fragility against top class opponents certainly isn’t, nor is his reluctance to continue as a full-back.

Sofiane Feghouli
The 5.5 midfield option is another in the West Ham treatment room. He missed tonight’s encounter with a hamstring problem which materialised in training according to Bilic.

Oscar
We thought he was on spot-kicks, clearly he is not. That’s a major dent to his appeal and with Cesc Fabregas breathing down his neck, the Brazilian’s owners will rarely be able to rest easy.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Sadio Mané at the Emirates: most tackles (6/6), most fouls won (6), joint-most ball recoveries (8), scored the game winning goal, and still got no baps whatsoever nor was he close.

Something to be concerned about? Any idea where he is losing so much bps?

Dont think its counted as the game winning goal, since they were already up. He put them 3 goals up. Should be a good pick, i think others stood out aswell though

There were 7 goals, he got 1. I suspect the Mig pen save cost him? Yet Clyne was still ahead, worth looking into.

And then be starting capoue every week? No thanks, i dont see why carroll is a bad pick. Alot of value there if he is fit. Im going to keep that front two unless ibrah goes spastic with points but i cant see that happening still

Yeah i get it. Usually i am aswell but this year i see less value in forwards and so much more in midfield. Maybe im wrong though, just feel like so many midfielders are underpriced!

Diamonde got lucky with that goal. Will be a rare occasion him getting points

There won't be any changes until a player reaches the threshold. We don't know what the threshold is and the price change prediction sites can only make a best guess based on previous years.

      I'm actually leaning towards Jakupovic.
Then again, I have been guilty of being too cute with my keeper rotation.

Gray ex/owners what are you doing with him?
Townsend I think will be worth keeping with a good string of fixtures coming along.

    Foster Jaku
    Shaw Stones Williams Amat Friend
    Lamela Firmino Hazard Townsend Capoue
    Kun Ibra Gray

    Suggestions?

How many out there don't like playing a defender if he's up against an attacker they own or vice versa?

Personally, I try not to let this affect my selection and instead focus only on form and strength of opposition

It has affected my decision in the past - form, fixture, etc.. plays a role though.

Best to play the 3 best defenders. You can bench a highly owned defender and get punished also so that needs to be taken into account.

Right but it's all a probability game isn't it? Say Redmond vs Valencia this week. Redmond has a decent chance to score form-wise but United also have a decent chance to keep a CS. My ownership of either doesn't affect their chances for points so I'm playing both. Wouldn't you?

I have shaw and will be benching him for Amat.

If you play both Redmond and Valencia one of them will be getting only 2 its or less.

It's hard to say which one though. Also Valencia could contribute an assist. I think United at home are more likely to CS than Middlesbrough away at Sunderland so I'm benching Friend and playing Valencia. And I think Redmond is more likely to score than Del so I'm playing him too. My point is that it's a game of chance/probability. You might be benching a Shaw CS. For the record, I'm also playing Amat

That is true, the whole game is based on chance! Buts its too much of a gamble for me. Right now my 3 starting defenders for GW2 are Walker Amat Stones

If it's between Redmond and Valencia, playing both makes sense given what the defender offers.

Deulofeu I'm benching but not because I have Foster. Because his finishing was poor on Sat. Interesting psychology going on here in the way different people think about this question

If you go for both you're hedging your bets a bit right and giving yourself a better chance of some returns from one of them.

If you have a prediction one way or another you can gamble it up, i.e. predicting a defender will keep a clean sheet and so benching the attacking player to free up a space for another player.

I am playing both Valencia and Redmond, to hedge my bets but also thinking that Redmond is more likely to give me points than Zaha (who I am benching out).

    Is Oscar to Coutinho worthwhile?

Already trying to chase the price rises. It's gonna be a long season.

Oscar needs to go (honestly should have never been in)

Cout is chasing points/fixtures aren't great but he'll probably do decent.

Would anyone do any of the following moves:

    A) Tadic -> Alli

    B) Vardy -> Kane

I'd consider Vardy to Kane... but saving the transfer is probably preferable.
