The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 37

Frustration is the only word for it.

In a compelling season that has tested even the most hardened and experienced Fantasy manager, it seems we are destined to be deprived of a truly satisfying double Gameweek.

So often the pillars that hold up our season finale, we speculate and strategise, whipping ourselves into a frenzy as we conjure visions of big individual hauls and three-figure totals.

Inevitably they rarely live up to our expectations but this season’s double Gameweeks feel flatter than ever, with the past 48 hours proving particularly exasperating.

Friday provided an ominous opening, with Chelsea’s victory wrapping up the title race to introduce rotation concerns, while also providing blanks for both Eden Hazard and Diego Costa.

Mason Holgate’s withdrawal for Everton provided an additional blow for those with the Bench Boost in play – an early marker for Saturday’s misery.

Today’s events included a variety of cruel twists.

Manchester City’s failure to keep a clean sheet, together with Kevin De Bruyne’s blank, provided immediate irritation.

That was followed by Victor Anichebe’s injury and Jordan Pickford’s one-point return, before today’s arch villains – Southampton – provided the coup de grace.

Having shaken off his tinkerman moniker, Saints boss Claude Puel regressed to punish our Bench Boost ambitions with seven changes.

Manolo Gabbiadini and Dusan Tadic were nowhere to be seen, Jack Stephens sat unused on the bench. Then Middleborough played their part, notching an improbable consolation goal to snatch the points from the Southampton assets that remained.

Stoke City’s Peter Crouch then provided a sucker punch, quite literally, to deprive us of an Arsenal clean sheet and apply more salt to today’s wound.

Even this evening’s 12-point contribution from Alexis Sanchez, backed by over 450,000 with the captaincy, was a silver lining that had its cloud, the Chilean limping from the bet365 turf to cast doubt over his start against Sunderland in midweek.

He played on and scored while carrying the knock – an apparent thigh injury, perhaps a dead leg. We now have to hope that Sanchez has the opportunity to run at the Black Cats defence on Tuesday. With him, Gameweek 37 could yet deliver for so many.

Elsewhere today, it was perhaps typical that it was left to a pair of single fixture assets to provide some comfort, Swansea City’s Fernando Llorente and the prolific Josh King of Bournemouth repaying those who kept faith amid the clamour for twin-fixture targets.

The last two days provide a sobering reminder of how we can overplay the potential of a double Gameweek. But we’ll doubtless do it all over again, and also have to remain optimistic on what remains of Gameweek 37.

There are still many fixtures to be played out and, in all likelihood, further unexpected plot twists to come – some of which will hopefully turn more favourably for us Fantasy managers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Will definately be making lots of early transfers next season, not to upset with my rank at 91k and rising hopefully. Poor team Value has really let me down at times this season. Atleast Im ahead in my main mini league.

      GW 11- Hazard
      GW 14 - Sanchez
      GW 18 - Alli
      GW 24 - Lukaku
      GW 26 - Kane
      GW 28 - King
      GW 34 - DDG
      GW 35 - Jakupovic (bench)

Interestingly I captained none of the above.

From our limited sample size so far, this number can be misleading - Pundit of Punts has done much better than me at owning the highest scoring player in a GW, but I'm ranked above him for instance.

It's not all about captaincy either because my only captain out of those was Sanchez when he scored 23.

I'm exactly the same. The downside is that my bench had lots of points last week, so it looks like BB last week and TC this week would've brought more points than the other (more conventional) way round.

It may. No way of knowing really I guess. My concern would be the potential rotation of Chelsea players. If someone had captained Hazard for example I would be really concerned right now

I'd say it's only a fail if you have double Arsenal defence, Stephens, JWP and Gabbiadini, and only one out of Sanchez, Sane and Jesus. Otherwise it's probably ok compared to most people!

Well if I went -12 and was considering it, I'd have probably gone KDB for Haz due to my rival having Sane. So I'd have been even more pee'd off lol. Was funnily enough saying last night to some guy on here, if there was an assist and goal imminent table for just home players, likely Sane would top it.. And so it proved

    My costliest mistakes this season:

    1)Baines over Coleman
2)Pogba over Alli in that 3-4 gws run-in when Alli went nuts
3)Selling King for Zaha in lure of the dgw34
    4) Getting in Gabbi for 34 and later (Should have continued 3-5-2)

Hi guys... has anyone posted on the following for GW38:
    a) teams that are desperate for a win (key players guaranteed to start)

    b) teams that would be resting their key players for other ambitions

Strange how some picks differ from one FPL team to another. somebody on the previous page saying that Baines was one of his worst picks.

I got Baines early in GW19 and Yoshida early in GW22. Since then I have been benching one or the other depending upon fixtures. I've managed 5.8 ppg game from rotating them so far. That's as many PPG as the top defender in the game (Alonso).

No complaints from me for Mr Baines...

It's all about timing - for example, I've now owned Hazard for 15 GWs, and he's returned the pathetic total of 2 goals and 3 assists.

That's a good job rotating between the two - I haven't been a believer in rotating defenders due to the apparent unpredictability of clean sheets. Even Chelsea went ages without a clean sheet before last week.

      1. Pierce34
        • 8 Years

Sanchez, on the other hand, has given me 17 goals and 7 assists in 25 GWs. But I'm sure other people will have had opposite experiences of these two players.

Pretty simply take a couple of weeks off, come back for the next season preview articles, then Bemba will start posting rumors of FPL site re-opening July 1st at 3 am, this will keep you going for a few weeks, the roller coaster of "Is it open yet?", and then finally when it opens in mid July you can tinker and make 20 different drafts only to Wildcard in GW2

I am looking forward to the season ending and freeing up some spare time.

Football gets in the way of loads of stuff. Maybe go outside and enjoy the summer?
      Read a book?
Play a video game if it is wet?
See some family you have been neglecting?
      Take a holiday?

    Arsenal fighting for top4

Alexis only 3 behind Lukaku for golden boot with Sunderland next

Alexis is a warrior who has played through pain before

I certainly hope so and tend to agree. My only concern is that it's not like him to ask to be taken off

Some headaches this week for sure, but I had a very good week.

Are most on here frustrated because of a low GW rank or because the BB hasn't yet paid off?

For me, having those cheap players allowed me a team that did really well, so I can't complain

I concur. All that matters is how many points you get not where they came from

    2. Pierce34

GW rank is pretty high, just the BB hasn't worked out so far (Gabbiadini, Stephens, Pickford and Brunt). BB last week would've been 25 points, and that was with Pickford and Brunt only playing once.

Used BB gw1 last year was a major fail, was hoping for a GW37 like most in my ML last year but looking like my bench mite just about scrape a positive +2

This is the right way to look at it for sure. It's also far too early to judge the GW - we're only halfway through so it could easily change in either direction.

I still wish Koeman hadn't taken off Holgate before 60 mins though lol

Yeah but we can't expect much from 4x 4.1 priced players. Enablers galore is what they are.
I got a few points out of them last week on BB.
21 I think I got off the bench.
This week so far has been terrible for those same cheapo's

Well I've only been posting recently, I used to just scan quickly over all the comments and try learn.something or pick up on some wrong advice.
Now I'm a bit more active I find some users very helpful.
I'm glad to be more involved now.

Yeah and also 'keep it simple'. I find the trouble I get into is usually when I make elaborate plans.

I don't like to make a transfer if I don't think it will help me in the upcoming gameweek

Just got in so only seeing the knee jerk now. This paints a rather negative picture.

Are most people not on 50/60/70 points with a host of games left to play? There will be three figure scores everywhere!

77 with Kane, Alli, DeGea and Tekkers to play.. 11dgwrs nailed on to start so pretty confident I'll be well over the 100 mark and be leading comfortably in my mini league into gw38, hopefully anyway..

Think they're are quite a few around this neck of woods with a bench boost of Pickford, Stephens, Holgate and Anichebe which hasn't played out so well.. 3 pts from these 4.. BB fail for quite a few but there's always the 2nd fixture

    3. Pierce34
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 12 months ago

Yeah, reasonably happy with 73, just a bit disappointed my BB has been useless with Gabbiadini, Stephens and Pickford. Should easily get 3 figures - I guess I'm spoiled because last season was my first and I thought a score of 170+ in a DGW was normal!

      1. Pep says
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 12 months ago

Bench boost wouldn't have contributed massively to this though, the likes of Sanchez and Kun (one of them captained) returned 75 pts alone so it's a part aside from those explosions

        1. Pierce34
          • 8 Years
          6 years, 12 months ago

That's true, most of the success in a big DGW comes from having a good 11 DGW players (or 10 plus King in most people's cases). But still, it's a bit annoying that BB last week would've got me 25 extra points (Pickford, Sane, Brunt, Stephens) but this week it'll struggle to hit double digits.

Totally agree with this. The knee jerk article seems very negative and borderline sensationalist.

When in reality most on here captained Sanchez, the highest scoring well owned attacker this week, and many owned Jesus & Sane. We're not even halfway through the GW yet
