Euro 2012

Scout Notes – Semi Finals – Day One

Portugal become the first side to pick up a clean sheet against defending champions Spain but the inability of Paulo Bento’s side to find the net ultimately proves costly. The goalless draw is kind to Fantasy managers who invested heavily in either side’s backline but Cristiano Ronaldo’s owners are left frustrated after a two point return sees his tournament end in a whimper:

Spain 0 Portugal 0
Vicente Del Bosque made just one change to Spain’s lineup for last night’s match, with Alvaro Negredo replacing Cesc Fabregas in the middle of the front three. Del Bosque’s side may have failed to find the net but their defence, once again, smiled kindly on Fantasy managers by returning a fourth clean sheet in succession.

Jordi Alba, Gerard Pique and Alvaro Arbeloa all earned an extra point for recovered balls but the latter’s yellow card meant the former two were the top points scorers for Del Bosque’s side with a seven point haul apiece. Indeed, the Spain back-four and keeper are the top scoring players in the McDonald’s game, with Alba leading the way on 32 points; keeping faith in their backline looks a strong tactic ahead of Sunday’s final, then, with their ability to pick up points showing no sign of abating.

While the option to select up to 12 players from a single team is available for the final, Spain’s attacking assets looks far less tempting. The Spaniards managed a mere four shots on target over the entire 120 minutes, with no player managing more than one. In terms of creativity, Xavi was the stand out performer, providing three goalscoring opportunities, but the 9.5 priced midfielder has returned just 15 points over his five games, with no attacking returns to his name to date.

Andres Iniesta was the chief goal threat with four attempts but he has bettered Xavi’s score by just two points so far, with neither of the Barcelona pair looking particularly enticing. Although there’s uncertainty surrounding the central forward role, Sunday’s 7.30pm deadline means Fantasy managers will be afforded the chance to view Del Bosque’s XI for the showdown with either Germany or Italy, handing us time to tinker with our squads before the final gets under way.

Portugal’s one alteration was enforced, with Paulo Bento handing Hugo Almeida a start as the lone forward due to Helder Postiga’s hamstring injury. While their previous three games had helped rack up six goals, it’s telling that their first and last games – against Germany and Spain – proved a step too far in terms of breaking down their opponents’ rearguard. Cristiano Ronaldo had plenty opportunities, though; the forward managed seven shots but failed to hit the target with any of his efforts – indeed, every one of Portugal’s eleven shots were wayward.

A clean sheet and an extra point for recovered balls helped Pepe end the tournament as his nation’s top scorer in the McDonald’s game on 27 points, with Ronaldo next best on 22. Bearing in mind the latter was the most popular player in the game with over 40% ownership, plenty of Fantasy managers will have budget to splash elsewhere now, given his 11.0 price tag.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

They'll all be bitching about RDM come Oct, as the usual 'faces' at Chelski cap any chance he has of refreshing the squad and style of play. Torres to be this season's big let down, again! 🙂

Just because the Chelsea squad wasn't willing to change effectively to his vision doesn't mean Spurs will be the same, nor does it mean his vision was in anyway faulty.

It'll be interesting to see if he could reproduce his Porto form in the Premier League with a more accommodating team.

Accepted Grim, but he also made the glaring mistake of assuming JT and Luiz could play a high line - they simply couldn't, JT is simply no mobile enough and any pace he may have once had is gone.

AVB should have realised that long before he did, but once he did, JT stopped looking like an inept clown. Hopefully, the Kaboul, Daws, Vertonghen, Caulker axes will make this a moot point at The Lane.

I reckon he wanted to replace JT though and JT kicked up a fuss and threw a tantrum along with Lampard. For what it's worth, I think the man is a good manager but he has to be allowed bring his style of play to it. Chelsea will run into similar problems this season if they allow certain players bully their way into the team.

Agreed Somalion. Still too much player power at The Bridge and I won't be surprised when the sh*t hits the fan for RDM this season. AVB has a younger, less self-centred group at The Lane to work with.

Definitely with you on that, I think if they leave him to it he could be what Spurs need to do very very well this season. Losing Modric will be a big blow though.

On the basis that Germany get through tonight, I can muster the following squad with 4 transfers:

    Cassilas
    Hummels / Alba / Aebeloa
    Ozil / Khedira / Iniesta / Busquests / Bender
    Silva / Podolski

    Bank 0.7m

Not entirely happy, but will see how the Germans perform; I'm still edging towards a 2-1 win for Spain in the final.... :0

I don't hate him, thought he was doing interesting things at Chelsea (that needed/need to be done) but didn't have full backing from Roman. Obviously short term it paid off a treat sacking him, maybe even long term but don't forget you finished lower under RDM than under AVB and picked up less points per game.

I'm not crazy about him but I'll be interested to see how he gets on.

So Manchester United is not willing to meet the £40M asking price for Modric and has ended interest in Modric. Now he is very likely to move to Madrid.
A bad move for him IMO. He would just be another benchwarmer. Can't see him playing ahead Ozil, Alonso or Khedira there.

Alonso is getting on a bit in years, Khedira is a different type of player as is Ozil.

Plus Barca/Real almost have to assume they will get to the semis or finals of both cup competitions so will have more games.

Even if they are different kind of players, there is no place for him in the midfield at Madrid. Alonso still has a good couple of years left in him and Modric doesn't deserve to play a part-time role. He has immense potential and he would be wasting his years at Madrid. Just look what happened to VDV and Sneijder there. As soon as they left Madrid they became monsters. This is a similar case.

Exactly, others out there that can fill his role for a lot less. Personally I'd prefer if we got a tougher Roy Keane like mid to accompany Kagawa. We already have one actually, Ritchie Brady but he's a bit young yet.

    Italy News:

Antonio Cassano will reportedly start alongside Mario Balotelli in tonight’s Euro 2012 semi-final between Italy and Germany.

Prandelli will make just one change to the team which beat England on penalties in the last round.

Juventus stopper Giorgio Chiellini will return after injury, but the centre-back will be fielded on the left in place of Palermo’s Federico Balzaretti.

Ignazio Abate and Daniele De Rossi should also start the game despite concerns that they would not be fit for the clash.

Seems there is consensus today that Germany won't keep a clean sheet tonight. Lots of posts advising against a German def captain.

Is it that far-reached to suggest Italy won't score tonight?

One goal against Spain, one vs. Croatia, two vs. Ireland and zero vs. England (unlucky though).

Spain aside, Germany have the best defense Italy have faced. I accept that gambling on a clean sheet is always risky regardless of opponent (see Germany vs. Greece), but this looks like a matchup capable of producing a 1-0 German win.

Have I got this completely wrong?

I'm loaded with Neuer, Hummels, Boateng, Lahm and Ozil / Khedira so have options tonight, but curious as to why Lahm (c) would not be a sensible option. Cheers

I really enjoyed RBJ's contributions and I miss him. He was usually sharply witty in his offensiveness 🙂

Conflicting articles from the same website.

    http://www.goal.com/en-gb/match/82166/germany-vs-italy/preview

"Veteran striker Miroslav Klose is likely to retain his place up front ahead of Mario Gomez, while midfielder Lars Bender may get the nod over Jerome Boateng at right-back."

    http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/3284/euro-2012/2012/06/28/3205747/prandelli-to-make-late-decision-on-italys-walking-wounded?source=breakingnews

"Lukas Podolski, Thomas Muller and Mario Gomez are all expected to return to Joachim Low's side after he made changes for the 4-2 win over Greece in the last round."

Personally JB, Ozil. Will likely play the full 90-120 mins whereas Reus may face being subbed, while playing more centrally also suggests Ozil could, cold be more involved. Reus would be an interesting wild card option, but (c) Ozil is playing the percentages.

Exactly, I think Baines is quite an old player (relatively speaking). We should be grabbing a youngster and getting him playing. Shame we won't give Fabio a chance, he's so much better than Rafael as a player and can slot into Evra's role no bother.
