The Digest – Gameweek 13

Roberto Firmino announces himself to Fantasy managers as Liverpool sweep aside City at the Etihad. Everton continue to take full advantage of their favourable schedule, whilst Sergio Aguero’s case for inclusion is dampened by a number of in-form frontmen.

The Player

A goal and two assists in Liverpool’s stunning 4-1 triumph at the Etihad has belatedly brought Roberto Firmino onto our radars.

Afforded just three starts in Brendan Rodgers’ eight matches in charge, the Brazilian had failed to justify the hefty £28m transfer fee that the Reds handed to Hoffenheim last summer. Indeed, Firmino’s assist in the Reds’ win at Chelsea – his first start under Jurgen Klopp – was his first attacking points of the season.

Handed a central role in Liverpool’s front three on Saturday evening, we finally saw flashes of the talent that served up 23 goals and 21 assists in his final two seasons in the Bundesliga. Firmino’s understanding and link-up play with Philippe Coutinho cut City apart time and again, and although Klopp was able to name both Christian Benteke and Daniel Sturridge on the bench at City, Firmino looks undroppable on this sort of form.

Sitting in just 1% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams to Coutinho’s 20%, Firmino seems a ready-made differential with the fixtures to flourish as the Merseysiders gain momentum under Klopp. Up next, the Reds go head-to-head with Swansea, Newcastle, West Brom, Watford, Leicester and Sunderland in the next six, affording the Brazilian the chance to show just why Liverpool were prepared to splash the cash.

The Team

An emphatic home win over Aston Villa took Everton’s tally to ten goals in their last two Goodison outings as Roberto Martinez’ side racked up the Fantasy points.

The 4-0 victory highlighted the options from back to front in Roberto Martinez’ side. Seamus Coleman delivered a ten-point return – his second double-figure haul of the season – as the hosts chalked up a first shut-out in seven attempts. Whilst the in-form Gerard Deulofeu had an off-day, Ross Barkley delivered two goals and an assist for his 24% owners – priced at 6.9, he’s now level with Alexis Sanchez on 72 points.

Up top, Romelu Lukaku continues to shrug off the inconsistency that has blighted him in previous years. The big Belgian’s brace means he’s now netted in three successive league outings – indeed, he’s blanked just twice in the last seven in a run that has served up seven strikes, three assists and 11 bonus points from Gameweek 7 onwards.

Despite the return of Sergio Aguero, Lukaku is the number one transfer target in FPL right now, with over 125,00 managers snapping him up since the weekend. It’s no surprise to see that Barkley leads the way for midfielders (108,000+) ahead of the weekend trip to Bournemouth. With Palace, Norwich, Leicester, Norwich and Stoke to follow the Dean Court clash, Martinez’ men certainly have the schedule on side to continue their weekend showing.

The Talking Point

Sergio Aguero’s return from injury was greeted with much fanfare last week but, in spite of netting against Liverpool, the City forward was somewhat overshadowed in the race for our attentions up front.

The aforementioned Lukaku’s brace was equalled by Harry Kane, whose recent renaissance continued at home to West Ham as he took his tally to seven goals in the last four Gameweeks. Similar to Lukaku, Kane also a very kind schedule ahead that heightens his appeal – over the next 12 rounds of fixtures, Tottenham play a top-six side just once.

Then there’s Jamie Vardy to consider. The Leicester striker has now scored in ten successive league appearances and although he’s risen in price to 7.4, he still offers outstanding value. Granted, the Foxes’ schedule is somewhat disconcerting (MUN, swa, CHE, eve, liv, MCI) over the next six Gameweeks, though it’s worth noting that Claudio Ranieri’s side have fared well against some of the top sides. Leicester have played four of the current top eight and scored twice against Arsenal, West Ham and Southampton and once against Spurs.

Whilst there’s no denying Aguero’s standing as the most explosive captaincy contender in the top flight, the form and fixtures offered by Lukaku and Kane is making a convincing case for those who are somewhat reluctant rip up their squads to accommodate the Argentine.

Given that City have scored just three times in the last four Gameweeks, their downturn in form, allied with Manuel Pellegrini’s need to manage Aguero’s minutes for fear of another relapse, is starting to convince some Fantasy managers that going without the 13.1-priced striker over a hectic festive period could be a very viable tactic.

I've boiled my dilemma into a simple A or B scenario, please vote! This is doing my head in haha.

Both scenarios are for a -8

    A) Mane and Vardy ----------> Ozil and Kane
    B) KDB and Vardy ----------> Ozil and Aguero

    Cheers

A for me - I'm uneasy about relying on Kun right through christmas (and downgrading elsewhere to make it happen), and Kane is on fire. Plus I think KDB will come good again soon.

Brilliant, that's pretty unanimous and what I was leaning towards anyway. Always a risk going without Aguero, but it does usually take him a few weeks to get up to speed...

Guys, would appreciate help on this dilemma - need to find 0.5m out of my backline in order to get Coutinho, which of the following defenders would you downgrade and who would you replace them with?

    Kolarov (6.0)
    Bellerin (5.7)
    van Dijk (5.5)
    Dawson (5.0)

also have Francis (4.5) who is obviously not much help here.

    Any thoughts appreciated!

It's not a tactic I'd use long term but that's just me. The way I see it is unless the 5th mid is someone you could actually play out of choice then having money tied up there is a waste. So at some point, say over Xmas, he gets a game in your team. You've paid 0.7 extra for him so he better deliver. Fact is it's more likely that he won't and that extra cash could've brought in more points elsewhere over the same period.

Leicester top of the table after 6 games could be seen as a stroke of good form and a lot of luck. Top after 13 games is no random occurrence. Many have written their position off as a result of easy fixtures combined with unsustainable form; yet their schedule hasn't been much easier than the likes of City and even Arsenal.

They are the top scorers in the league with 28 goals after 13 games- nothing lucky about this. Granted they have conceded 20 goals- making them one of the leakiest defences. However we are too quick to write off any hope of defensive stability. Two clean sheets in the last 4 games, improving defensive stats and Ranieri's desperate promises of Pizza in exchange for clean sheets suggest that a lot of defensive work is going on behind the scenes. I for one will be playing Simpson more often. And it's because of this improvement in defence that I think their from could be partially sustainable- as I don't think they can keep winning games by simply out scoring the opposition.

Now I'm of course not suggesting that they will win the title, or even that this amazing run will continue with some more difficult fixtures to come. However they are not top of the table by chance. In my view it would be wise to see how Vardy and Mahrez go in the next few games before considering them surplus to requirement.

        All makes sense 🙂

A lot of it comes down to the top teams being so inconsistent though. Isn't 28 points extremely low for the 1st place this time of year?

          • 8 Years
          8 years, 5 months ago

Yeah good point. It's like no one wants to take control of the league. But I also think that's down to most games being very competitive and the 'lesser' teams being at a higher level

            • 9 Years
            8 years, 5 months ago

Top teams in the Prem have massively dropped off as they can no longer attract/keep the very top world class players & at the same time lesser clubs have enough money to build quickly.

The gap has definitely got smaller which makes this league so incredible to watch ATM!

            1. Zizoulicious
              • 8 Years
              8 years, 5 months ago

Yup exactly. And for the top teams to buy good players, the selling clubs are demanding incredible fees. Whereas the smaller clubs who also have good scouting networks can buy good players at more reasonable prices.

I think it's completely unsustainable though and the lack of homegrown players completely reduces the talent pool from which to choose from. So I don't expect the overall quality of the prem to improve any time soon, though the smaller gap in quality between teams does make for excellent virwing

This argument of 'wait and see how they go' is fair enough, but at some point this run will end, and Vardy will stop scoring so much. Granted it may not happen right now, but I think I'm willing to take that risk and get rid as the fixtures are turning....

though i am one of those who punted and taking out vardy. not that he has done anything wrong..just that he is taking up a striker spot which i hope the other in form strikers(aguero-kane-lukaku) will outscore him.

many argues about the price difference..but the fact is that the form players right now are all < 10m and thus u can actually have a decent team even with the ASL front line

Klopp will have a press conference tomorrow before Europa so there may be something more solid then.

UCL: What do you think about Gibbs for todays match against Dinamo Zagreb? He will play as an attacking mid if he starts. He could get subbed off early, but that increases his CS chances.

I wouldn't knee jerk and make that move, Deulofeu was unfortunate to get no assists (he should have been awarded one for Barkley's first goal). I think he'll deliver consistently over the next few, whereas Barkley will score in bursts and will probably blank in a few

Everyone here on Lukaku (c)? Was wondering if Firmino is a viable option. The manager will most certainly involve him more - coming from the Bundesliga he surely has advantage for being selected and if Klopp plays to his strengths which will most likely be the case - he will surely produce. Swans DEF not great either.

I would bear in mind in mind that Coutinho possibly (probably) being out could affect him quite adversely. They played so well together.

Go your own way though. Swansea are there for the taking for sure

Firmino not even sure to play full game especially if he starts Europa game...think we can have switches between him and benteke in near future...

Thanks. Will probably stick with Lukaku but Firmino is so tempting knowing how well Klopp can make the best of his talents. (BVB fan)

On Sunday I was all set on Mane-->Coutinho for -4 but then....

--+> It helped that Liverpool next 2 are against poor defences of Swans and Newcastle...

--+> But then came Coutinho doubt for Swans match and also Mane can do well if Kompany again misses out

--+> Factoring in Mane then faces AVL home against whom he had that famous hattrick hardly helps my cause

Should I take hit or not??

I had same thought last GW but I didnt and i just did same move... still wondering why, but coutinho just gives me that edge (feeling). Also he was benched for the game, cos he has been below par...

I've ended up with an abysmal back line somehow...

    Cedric, Gabriel, Mert, Cameron, Browning

All of them seem to a rotation risk, prepared to take a hit and swap 2 around any ideas? nothing in the bank/

    cheers.

Yeah I really need to sort that and link my team, had it other seasons, assumed it would stay the same automatically.

Bought Gabrial and Browning on a WC when they were getting the minutes, Cameron got injured the gw I bought him in and eventually lost his place, Cedric was ok until Yoshida came onto the scene recently, only bought Mert last week as he was the cheapest way into the Arsenal back line ...rest of my team is mustard thought!

      Whoa...
      Thinking long term...
This GW, Merts > Dier/Walker (would be Gabriel but nothing in bank)
Next GW, Gabriel > Galloway (only in till Jags is back)

That could work actually, I'm in a real state so don't mind taking a hit - I'll check how long Jags is suspected to be out for etc

        thanks.
