A frantic festive schedule has left many in the Fantasy Football Scout community in need of a break and the chance to take stock of their squads.

Moving funds out of midfield to pay for the plethora of premium defenders is among the issues considered, while there are also some contentious debates around assists and the dumping of this season’s runaway Fantasy star.

Our community writers are inviting Fantasy managers to test out their playing skills on the pitch, and our Members’ area statisticians have been analysing attacking defenders and the most resolute goalkeepers.

We end this week’s round-up with a look at how the congested fixture list affected the top spots in our community leagues.

The Community Articles

My Pretty Pony is inviting the community to snap back to reality and put their own footballing skills to the test at the inaugural Fantasy Football Scout charity football event in London next month. The fundraiser is being staged in memory of FFScout regular Simon Humber (Absinthe), who passed away following a battle with ocular melanoma in 2015.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topic

With four Gameweeks taking place over the festive period, Zoumas Bloomers is among those to welcome the chance to catch a breath during this weekend’s FA Cup.

The final fixture in this run, featuring double fixtures for Spurs and West Ham, proved taxing according to our “Rough with the Smooth” round-up of your recent scores. This was particularly the case for those who trusted the Triple Captain chip on Spurs striker Harry Kane, who was benched against Swansea through illness, only to blank in Thursday night’s Wembley clash with West Ham.

Numb dropped by with some words of comfort to those who wasted their chip on the erratic striker, while Kings of Lyon has been attempting to work out why Kane seems to struggle so frequently against ‘easy’ opposition at Wembley.

Double Gameweek 22 also saw a flurry of Free Hit chips deployed, but Pierce34 believes they may have been better used for upcoming blank fixtures caused by FA Cup commitments. Meanwhile, Sanchez took a look at how many points FPL’s chips should realistically bring in, and Tamagotchi Massacre has been examining the best time to use another potentially lucrative chip, the second Wildcard.

The pause in proceedings also gives the community an opportunity to ponder some long-term changes. This includes tapping into the emerging source of strong value midfielders, such as Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard, according to our Hot Topic on Gameweek 23’s key issues.

West Ham’s Marko Arnautovic, who is still in less than one in ten FPL sides, is another value middle man being considered, particularly in our discussion on top differentials for 2018. After missing his side’s 1-1 draw with Spurs through injury, those coveting the Austrian are advised to keep a close eye on team news updates from the Hammers’ camp.

Defence is likely to be the destination of the funds liberated by those midfield bargains, with our discussion on latest trends at the back looking at how the strong form of expensive rearguard stars has coincided with a lack of convincing budget options in this area of the pitch.

Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso is unquestionably the most wanted defender heading into 2018, after he scored his sixth goal of the season against Arsenal this week ahead of a kind run of fixtures (LEI bha BOU wat WBA).

Manchester City’s John Stones (5.4) is another player under scrutiny. He made a midweek return from an injury lay-off to tempt owners of his more expensive centre-back partner Nicolas Otamendi into a money-saving swap. Ludo dropped by to compare the prospects of these two Sky Blues assets, with a special focus on their goal threat.

But as Samaael points out, rather than focusing on defence any spare change may be better spent on attack, with Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero now seemingly rotation-free due to a long-term knee injury to his team-mate Gabriel Jesus.

Jigger and Pony is another interested in the Argentine and canvassed the community on the best way to accommodate his 11.7 price tag.

Aside from his 13 goals and four assists, another factor in the community’s interest in Aguero is the lack of reliable forwards. Mkhi Magic is among those who hope that Everton’s new striker Cenk Tosun, who is set to sign from Besiktas, may provide a strong option up front at a fraction of the cost.

Among the most controversial posts this week was 30DaysOfHa(C)ard’s assertion that FPL’s highest scoring player Mohamed Salah may be surplus to requirements during the second half of the season. Already around half a million FPL managers have ditched the Liverpool winger, who is currently nursing a groin injury. However, according to this lively discussion, the jury is still out as to whether he can be safely swerved after an outstanding opening 22 Gameweeks.

Another contentious issue tackled by the community was whether one of Kevin De Bruyne’s two assists should have been awarded in their home victory over Watford this week. Gunner2727’s suggestions on how FPL could alter its rules around such debatable awards attracted more than 100 comments.

The Members Tables

For those on the look out for a new goalkeeper, Matty_Floyd has been taking a look at those most likely to deliver save points.

Unsurprisingly, Alonso dominates my attacking defenders table, which also features a raft of other rampaging full-backs as well as attack-minded centre-backs.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Elvarus has increased his lead in Red Lightning’s Top 10K Any Season league, but has lost top spot in the FFS Members league to Heroes and Villians, who has rocketed to 37th in the overall standings.

Ian Manion is the new leader of the FFS League and is in 17th position overall, but he has now played all his chips except for his second Wildcard.

With a Gameweek 22 score of 87, Stefan Stamenic is the early leader of Red Lightning’s January to May league. Mei You Shagua is hot on his heels with the same score, but has had to settle for second place after making more transfers.

Az continues to dominate the FFScout Moderators and Contributors league, with Jack Wain moving up to second.

In QPRUtd’s Frequent Summer Posters League, ZoumasBloomers is another league-leader proving difficult to unseat as I continue to chase him in second, while QPRUtd remains in third.

In TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing, the safety score was 42, which saw 102 players depart and 783 remain. Entry is currently open, with more details on how to join available here.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-Ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head-to-head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Neither are particularly appealing this week. If you have 2 frees, then A looks decent as a longer term solution. But equally you’ll want to make the move to Sterling from Eriksen next week.

To summarise - if you have 2 FTs, either move is decent. If you have just the 1 FT, save.

Evening lads. Thoughts on my plans for the next couple of weeks?

    Hennessey | Speroni
    Otamendi | Vertonghen | Kenny | Ogbonna | Dunk
    Salah | Sterling | Son | Arnie | Richarlison
    Kane | Morata | DCL

    1 FT, 0.1 itb.

By the end of the next 2 GWs, I am targeting Alonso (in for Vert), and Aguero (in for Morata, unless he goes wild this week). I would also like to deal with DCL (dead wood). The trick is in the funding, and the timing.

    A) Son + Vertonghen -> Lingard + Alonso (-4). This allows for Morata (Bri) + DCL (bench) -> Aguero (NEW) + Quaner (bench) (-4) next week.

    B) Save this week, all 4 transfers potentially next week (-8).

    C) Son -> Lingard this week, other 3 transfers next week (-8).

    C) Keep Son, forget Lingard, and fund Aguero + Alonso moves either this week or next by downgrading either Arnie or Richarlison to a 4.5ish mid.

I think I prefer option A, personally, but I’m interested in opinions.

      I think the 2nd C.

No need to remove Son this GW as it's sideways imo. As a way to free funds maybe the GW after is better.

Maybe a Richarlison > Lingard this week to take advantage of the Utd fixture then reasses options for Kun next GW.

      1. Geordienufc1
        • 12 Years
        8 years, 3 months ago

Sorry, that was meant to be D haha. Cheers for that, I quite like that plan. Good to get Lingard in for this great fixture whilst he’s in form.

My only concern is that it would then leave Alonso out of reach.
Perhaps though I’m being blinded by the fact that I chose Christensen over Alonso about 4 gameweeks ago and it has completely burned me, and I should just put Alonso on the back burner. And there’ll probably still be other ways.

    3. doy

A I reckon. Alonso is essential and needs to be brought in asap! Bringing in Aguero is a good idea too, given that Jesus is out. Luckily I brought him in last GW.

Thanks mate 🙂 I don’t know if I can bear watching too many more Chelsea games without him!

And whilst I get the feeling that Morata will eventually start converting these great chances into points, I can’t help but feel Aguero is the better option until he does.

Won't be relying on RLC, and think he's a decent sub option, along with a strong def and Mbemba (dead wood third sub, who sometimes gets the odd minutes in emergency)

          • 12 Years

True, I have nothing against him when he plays. I’d just be hestitant to draft in an injured player when we’re still a bit in the dark about his injury.

Plus if you go with your team below (with Mbemba as a 5th def and Ayew as your 3rd striker) I’d say RLC will be needed at least every other week, since Mbemba doesn’t play as you say, and Ayew has poor fixtures (and plays for a very poor team).

Salah - not a big injury, was ruled out of the FA Cup game yesterday, expected to return. against City.

Arnie - supposedly he was at training today, so it’s thought that him missing the Spurs game was precautionary, as Moyes had advertised.

Elliot - no update. Darlow was excellent against Stoke so he might not be straight back in even if fit.

    Kane, Morata

    1ft, 0,1itb - don’t mind a hit.
    A. Arnie -> Lingard

Not B as doubling up on Utd mids doesn't make sense. Erikto Mahrez might be good but not for a -4?
A looks solid, I am looking at that too. Lingard's price will surely rise soon as well.

How about tryna to slip in Stones or Otamendi?

G'day gents, what a crappy DGW that turned out to be! Hope your weekends are going well thus far wherever in the world you are......thoughts on the below?

    A) Arnie ---> Lingard (FT, 0.9 ITB)
    B) Arnie ---> Lingard & Zanka ---> VVD (-4, 0 ITB)
    C) Alli ---> Lingard (FT, 3.0 ITB)
    D) Alli ---> Lingard & Zanka ---> VVD (-4, 2.1 ITB)

Or any other suggestions such as Zanka ---> Jones ?

    Cheers guys!

Probably wouldn’t take a hat for either of the defensive transfers, especially not with Liverpool playing City this week.

As for Alli vs Arnie - I’d wait to see if we get more news on Arnie’s fitness. You’ll definitely want rid of Alli after the next 2 weeks given his next 3 fixtures After that are horrible. So if Arnie proves to be fit I’d be tempted to remove Alli now and bank the cash.

Cheers Geordie down under! Yeah I was thinking the same regarding Pool v City, but I am worried that I'd miss out on VVD if his price rises by 0.1 in the coming days.

I just don't trust Arnie (especially given he is injured) and feel that Lingard is better value, being cheaper and on fiyah.

Alli, I feel that he will do something against Everton as per recent seasons so I want to keep him for that match ideally. Then flog after given the horrible 3 fixtures after that as you said!

No worries mate 🙂 Agreed regarding Arnie, the game ease of his fixtures might flatter to deceive with him.

I think you’re probably safe regarding VVD - I believe his price is protected until the 10th anyway, and even with his cup goal I doubt lots will rush to bring him in ahead of City.

Thanks again! Arnie has an unhealthy penchant for picking up needless yellows and reds.

Yeah fair pt about VVD, I reckon I'll just do Arnie to Lingard sooner rather than later ;-). Need Utd cover for that very tasty looking home game vs hapless Stoke.

    WC v2

    Ryan - Adrian
    Alonso - Otamendi - Jones - VVD - Mbemba
    Salah - Sterling - Mahrez - Lingard - RLC
    Kane - Firmino - Ayew

Ayew & RLC rotating. Only issue is CL is about to kick in again, so more rotation imminent?

          Me likey, me likey.

I'm not worried about Haz and Sanchez.

Both don't have high enough ownership numbers to be a real risk to a well balanced team imo, as long as you have other solid captain options.

Obviously just keep track of the Firmino situation but otherwise gtg. 😉

Don't think you need all 5 DFs playing until the next DGW, so can keep Mbemba as a cheapie on the bench? You got Firms to play a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2.

Yeah I would definitely bring in Ota/Stones + Alonso.
Definitely bring in Lingard for Erik/Son.
Sane hasn't really been performing either, maybe a wait and see with him.
I'd also get rid of one of your 2 West Ham defenders.

yep, masuaku is on the list, agree on everything but not on sane, he will start to destroy teams again 🙂

who is more important otamendi or alonso ? or simply to bring in stones...

          • 8 Years

I reckon Alonso is due to his goal threat, the dude is basically a winger and always pops up in the box, not to mention his FKs threat! But I see you already have Chelski cover with Christensen, so if you can't afford Alonso, then it's OK?
Stones is definitely looking very interesting given that he is 1m cheaper than Ota and is a goal threat too as we have seen in the CL.

Ahhh that's right, Tomkins. I reckon downgrade Tomkins to a cheapie df like Mbemba and get in Alonso. No need for 5 playing defenders IMO, until the next DGW.

Quaner possibly b/c he’s pretty much the cheapest, and seems to be playing a few games. Ideally you won’t be needing your 3rd striker of this bunch to start any games between now and your next wildcard, so I think the cheaper the better (provided that they play some minutes at least).

Nevertheless, it’s about finding the best of a bad bunch, none are particularly good options.

Well said, they're all pretty ordinary aren't they? At least Jordan Ayew has been popping up with a couple goals recently and pretty much is nailed-on. Quaner does free up 0.4m more though which comes in very handy! Exactly, won't be utilising the 3rd striker very often, all the value is in MF and DF.

          • 12 Years

For sure, 0.4 more for Ayew does buy you much greater security of starts which is always nice. Particularly as we approach likely blank gameweeks (albeit not for a number of weeks). I guess it just depends whether you foresee yourself using/needing the extra money.
