Joshua King (£6.5m) scored his first goal of pre-season on Friday ahead of a campaign that could see him return to his best.

He was a revelation in 2016/17 when, classified as a midfielder, he registered 16 goals, three assists and 178 points while operating as Bournemouth’s centre-forward.

His follow up to that was disappointing by comparison. Shifted to a forward on Fantasy Premier League, the Norwegian international scored half-as many goals, provided three assists and amassed a total score of just 110 points.

However, some underlying data from the second-half of the season suggest an improvement in his fortunes in 2018/19.

CHERRY ON TOP

We may have recently revealed the goal threat of Ryan Fraser (£5.5m) and the injured Junior Stanislas (£6.0m), but it does appear that King was unlucky not to score more often in 2017/18. No Bournemouth player registered more touches in the box than King (140) and none of his team-mates had more shots there either (1.2 per game). His 21 shots on target was also a club-high, while only Fraser (16.7) had a better goal conversion rate than him (15.7). Furthermore, King scored more big chances than anyone else at the club (six), even though Callum Wilson (£6.0m) was presented with more of them. Last time around King was still the joint-top scorer with eight goals, but he could easily improve on that in the upcoming season.

CREATIVE STREAK

While the cheaper Wilson matched King’s goal tally in 2017/18, where the Norwegian has the advantage over his colleague was creativity, which could well justify spending an extra £0.5m on him this season. King created 38 chances last term, which ranked second among the Cherries, behind only Fraser and, crucially, double that of Wilson. It is no surprise then that King registered twice as many assists as his English colleague, with just Andrew Surman (£5.0m) and Jordon Ibe (£5.5m) putting up more.

END OF SEASON FORM

King did not start 2017/18 particularly well but was one of the many players who performed much bette in the second-half of the campaign. Between Gameweek 1 and 19, King was involved in just 23 percent of Bournemouth’s goals. From Gameweek 20 until the end of the season, he was involved 50 percent of the time. Considering the Cherries’ appealing early fixtures, especially at home, King could establish himself as an important figure in the opening 10 fixtures. A trip to Chelsea in Gameweek 4 looks the hardest, although the Cherries were still 3-0 winners there last time, while Cardiff, Everton, Leicester, Crystal Palace and Southampton will all visit the Vitality Stadium in the early months.

SELECTION ADVANTAGE

King could start the 2018/19 campaign as the first-choice centre-forward at Bournemouth, although it’s early days yet. So far, King has been involved in all three of the Cherries’ pre-season matches, featuring from the beginning on two occasions. Meanwhile Jermain Defoe (£6.0m) has two starts, three appearances and a goal too, but Wilson has featured just once. Furthermore, King racked up more starts that any other Bournemouth forward in 2017/18 (27).

IF City get off to a flier then I think you’ll regret having Fernandinho because you’ll have to waste a transfer taking him out to upgrade someone else to a City big hitter.
Austin and Southampton have an average start but I think there’s better ppm potential elsewhere in his price bracket (Wilson, Wood, Jimenez)
Firmino isn’t assured a running start after the WC and Spurs don’t have an overly easy start (also they are notoriously starters). Could be worth downgrading Eriksson to Gudmondssen and upgrading Firmino to Aguero/Auba

Good team, but I would try to fit Auba into that forward line maybe in place of Firmino and replace Austin with Wood.

Why do you prefer Otamendi over Chealsea pair of Alonso and Azpil ?

I think we need a hot topic on Lacazette or Aubameyang. £1.5m difference, but even if Auba is on penalties, is Laca going to get more chances if he is playing centrally?

    1. ⭐ Bemba_Da ⭐
      • 16 Years
      8 years, 12 hours ago

lacazette is a lethal striker. He's struggled previously because he has been isolated. However he seems to have struck a partership with auba and it's better for him.

I had laca from the start. Cheaper and as lethal as auba, possibly better in the box

I'm having this dilemma I've switched between the two twice already now. Is Lacazette definitely going to be starting as he's been benched a few times in pre season as well as today? That extra 1.5 makes a big difference if he is.

      2. diesel001
        • 9 Years

Laca since 2013/14 season: 130 goals in 221 appearances = 0.59 goals per appearance
Auba since 2013/14 season: 151 goals in 227 appearances = 0.66 goals per appearance

Fairly similar. So for me it comes down to who is going to get more chances.

17 pens in that total for Auba.
25 pens in that toal for Laca.

May swing it to Auba if Laca does not have pens.

Aubameyang has been in my team from the very first draft and I expect a great season from him. Really reluctant to get rid.

I still think Lacazette is more likely to get benched/rotated. But he is tempting, I must admit.

If it werent for those first two fixtures I would double up.

Thinking about it. Need the analysis to see who is actually getting the chances. You can be classified as playing LB, but if you are getting 10 chances a game, then that is better than the FW who is getting 2 chances a game. Who is getting more chances? Auba or Laca?

I watched much of the game. Laca has a nose for goal, yet Aubameyang is so threatening. Speed, quickness, and also very good knack for scoring. I’d take Aubameyang over Lacazette, if I don’t get kun.

Havent seen the game - why did Laca score twice and Auba got no attacking returns?

        It’s friendlies though.
With lots of changes during the game, etc.

    Thoughts on Keita?

He has decent goal involvement and stats from Germany. Should be nailed in Liverpool team who will possibly ne highest scoring team this year.

Will having Henderson and Fabinho beside him give him licence to go forward a decent amount?

Importantly, at his price point it allows an eaay switch to Pogba/Ramsey/Mkhi in GW3 or 4 if needed

I'd be more than happy to have him in my team if I had 4 Liverpool slots but with Robbo, Salah and Firmino all great options I just can't fit him in. I think he'll definitely justify the 7.5m price tag behind our front 3.
