FPL new signings: Who is Leeds forward Georginio Rutter?

Scoring goals hasn’t been a particular problem for Leeds United so far, with the issue being at the back where only three teams have conceded more than their 33.

Yet the club-record £36m capture of Georginio Rutter (£5.5m) suggests that Jesse Marsch wants to stop relying on Rodrigo (£6.4m) for goals and has therefore added another exciting young talent to the attacking ranks.

Arriving on a five-and-a-half-year deal, Rutter follows Max Wober (£4.5m) through the door as a January arrival.

So can the 20-year-old help pull Leeds away from relegation and what impact will he have in FPL?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions below.

THE HISTORY

FPL new signings: Who is Leeds forward Georginio Rutter? 2

Born in the north-western town of Plescop, Rutter’s potential was quickly spotted by the region’s leading side Rennes.

It led to progression inside one of Europe’s elite academies, with Ousmane Dembele and Eduardo Camavinga amongst their many graduates of recent times.

Rutter made his Ligue 1 debut in September 2020 but neither started nor scored in a Ligue 1 match, though a Champions League goal did arrive against Sevilla. Hoffenheim noticed his expiring contract and convinced him that the Bundesliga was the perfect place to bloom.

A late January 2021 transfer was agreed upon for just £500k and it didn’t take long for Rutter to introduce himself. Brought on for an 87th-minute debut against Werder Bremen, he scored three minutes later.

Although his two years in Germany have thrust him into first-team football, France under-21 caps and a Golden Boy nomination, it’s still a remarkably high fee for a forward without many goals.

Eight arrived last season, albeit with only 13 of 33 appearances as a starter, and just two have arrived so far in 2022/23. From Hoffenheim’s perspective, they’ll gladly let a Premier League club pay big money and ensure a massive profit – similar to what they did with Roberto Firmino (£8.0m) and Joelinton (£5.9m).

PLAYING STYLE

According to WhoScored, Rutter is a strong dribbler that suits counter-attacking play but also knows how to press opposition defences, which fits in with Marsch’s philosophy.

It suggests another wide attacker but the Frenchman is almost always used as the lead centre forward. 20 of this season’s 27 shots have been from inside the box and Rutter himself believes he is mostly central, as he told Scouted Football.

“I can play with my back to goal when needed (to help the team push up), but I also like to drift out wide and attack spaces as a winger. I’m a mix of all that. But I would say that things can change depending on the team you play for and what is happening during the game. I can also add that I’m a generous player – I run a lot.

Another great asset alongside versatility is his dual-footedness. He labels himself a left-footer but is strong with both, seeing five of his 11 league goals coming from the right boot and only three from the left.

While profiling Rutter for Leeds fans, the official Bundesliga website compares his playing style to Bayern Munich and Germany star Serge Gnabry.

“Part centre-forward, part jet-heeled winger, there is something very Gnabry-esque about watching Rutter play. He is among the 50 quickest players in the Bundesliga with a top speed of 34.54 km/h (21.46 mph), so his pace, direct running and mesmerising dribbling make him a handful for any defender.”

“Add into the mix that he is equally comfortable out wide as he is through the middle and it becomes clear just why Rutter is so highly regarded.

WHERE RUTTER FITS IN AT LEEDS

Rutter may just be the clinical finisher they need. Amongst all 20 Premier League sides, our Members Area data shows that Leeds are one of the worst for shot accuracy – the percentage of goal attempts that are on target.

FBRef states that 14 of Rutter’s 27 shots have been on target and this 51.9 per cent is better than his new team-mates.

It’s hard to say how soon he will break into the starting line-up, though. In the absence of injured Luis Sinisterra (£6.5m) and Patrick Bamford (£7.2m), youngsters like Crysencio Summerville (£4.2m) and Wilfried Gnonto (£5.0m) have excelled when handed a chance.

The latter has started their last five league encounters and looked dangerous at all times, whilst now-injured Summerville scored in four successive pre-World Cup matches. Names like Jack Harrison (£5.8m), newly-fit Bamford and the ever-present Brenden Aaronson (£5.5m) make competition fierce.

Meanwhile, Rodrigo is the only FPL midfielder to have reached 10 goals, making it hard to justify moving him away from centre forward.

IS RUTTER WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

Our Season Ticker shows that Leeds have an appealing run that ranks second of all sides without a Double Gameweek.

However, assuming Rutter begins with bench appearances, his starts may end up coinciding with tougher outings.

The FPL game has handed him a £5.5m starting price, offering a downgrade option if managers lose faith in Aleksandar Mitrovic (£7.2m) or Darwin Nunez (£8.8m), whilst Ivan Toney (£7.5m) still has FA charges hovering above his head.

All things considered, it’s hard to see Rutter becoming a serious FPL option during this season but stranger things have happened.

    Sanchez (Ward)
    Trippier, Botman, Akanji (Shaw, White)
    KDB, Saka, Odegaard, March, Rashford
    Kane, Haaland (Ferguson)

    On wildcard. 0.1 itb

Does this look okay? Any suggestions?

      Perfection.

What would I change: not much. Keep an eye on Akanji - 5 CBs now fit for City.

Not bad - very similar to what I did last week

Would recommend Raya over Sanchez as he's probably going to score more before the season is out and he doesn't block a third Brighton attacker.

      Good luck.

Yeah, I'd do this. And only missing link is Toney who I think does very well over next few, but does blank and has this ever looming ban (which may never come).

        Nice to see a 352.

Just a side note, we don't know who'll get to the Cup final so can't say that Toney has a blank. We were all expecting MCI to reach final and look what happened. Even if he blanks fixtures both sides GW25 are great, I have no problem benching him, we tend to overthink these things.

Very nice side man! Very similar to mine! If I decide to go for Saka I will end up doing the same and going 352 with Ferguson up front.
Same defence barring Botman where I’ve gone for Schar but that could change also.
I’d do Sanchez > Raya like myself

Ah that’s fair enough, Botman just as good a pick.

The freaky thing is if I went the same way as yourself I’d have 1.6m spare ITB! Not a bad thing, just not used to leaving that much ITB on a WC, but it is the season of low priced amazing assets I guess.

I'm rolling this week. Need to find a route to Ode which may be KDB, but prefer Rodrigo (not enough cash for the straight swap).

May just have to live without Ode until Brentford blank.

    DDG
    White Trippier Botman
    KDB Saka Rashford Rodrigo
    Haaland (C) Kane Saka

    Ward Mitoma Shaw Lewis

Such an easy one KDB to Odegaard, absolutely nothing special about KDB this season.
Odegaard will probably match or better whatever KDB gets at almost half the price

Probably but then in this instance you would need to sacrifice one other to get the funds. I like the rest of your team so would want to keep them.

Maybe Kane to Darwin if fit could generate funds

Would probably have to be Shaw or DDG - could even do Shaw to another United def, depending on how nailed/fit Dalot and Martinez look.

If Shaw is going to continue at CB, he isn't ideal at his price anyway.

Or if I do the move later, I would do Toney to a playing forward when Brentford blank and do Mitoma to Ode.

Read a nice write-up on Rutter from Phil Hay (Leeds reporter), seems like he's fairly raw yet still has decent experience in a top league and it sounds like he does a good job of both holding up play and bringing in players around him into the game as well as attacking the box himself, Leeds fans seem excited by him despite his relative lack of goals and it sounds like he's the perfect profile for them given the talented players Leeds will have around him. I feel for Bamford but I think him being replaced was always going to happen, hopefully this will actually be a good thing for him as they can maybe very, very slowly build up his fitness now rather than continually have to rush him back to see him crumble again shortly after

Wolves have looked a lot better under Lopetegui, while City have been not so great since the restart. I'm very much considering benching KDB or Haaland against Wolves if they look bad again against Spurs

My life won't change if I bench a player in a fantasy game. I've done more "unthinkable" things than that before according to FFS users (like selling TAA or benching Robbo before Liverpool's defence went off the rails in recent years). Didn't say I definitely will but I definitely won't rule it out given City's form

I'm considering it too. Was originally looking at KDB but I wonder if Haaland makes more sense because its fundamentally a team issue rather than an individual one, and an uncapped Haaland in your starting 11 is basically just damage limitation & can't advance your rank. Does EO play any part in your thinking Nate?

          1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
            • 3 Years
            1 year, 6 months ago

I suppose in this case I'd have to keep it in mind, but generally no. It's more a question of what I expect City to do against Wolves and how both players are playing and about how much I suppose I think either player is likely to be involved in a goal for City. Naturally it'd be high for both normally, but Haaland hasn't had much support (something Pep mentioned after the derby) and he's needed to try to come short more to get involved, while KDB is still very involved but just hasn't looked the best (although again he had a brief period in that game where he looked more like himself).

Back to your question more directly, you're not wrong, KDB is a bit of a differential of sorts for me while Haaland is the complete opposite. I'm trying to make lost ground so I won't do it with Haaland, but similarly I wouldn't be stupid and go against him if I felt I didn't have reasoning behind it (like captaining Rashford this week)

I generally don't take EO into account much either. Once Sun Jihai rolls out the numbers then I start to second guess what I 'want' to happen, but generally I haven't found any way in which it actually aids my decision making (yet, at least).

Certainly never considered the implications of benching the most popular captain before!

Maybe there's some interesting stuff to consider about e.g. how I should have started Mitrovic because a goal against the EO of Newcastle defence would be a much bigger swing for me than a Newcastle CS? But that's not really part of my game at the moment.

Haaland has scored 3 goals in 4 games since the restart. FYI.

He scored 2 against Leeds and certainly could have had more, they gave him and others plenty of opportunities. However against decent defences since then City haven't been great. Haaland has 1.7xG over the last 3 games and has looked increasingly isolated

    Rashford Saka KDB Martinelli Andreas

Not mad about starting Andreas but kind of want to have 2 FTs to target DGWs and blanks coming up.

Tempted to do Pereira > March/Mitoma, but don't want to play FH GW25 and Fulham have have game GW25. Anyone else think this way? Or are you planning to play FH25? Surely there will be better gameweeks to use FH?

Lei, BOU, cry, FUL for Brighton before break, I would risk, points potential is great. We don't know who blanks in GW25 so no point to worry about it month before in my opinion.

They're easily the best cheap options in the game right now. The points you can gain in-between matter.

No one has any idea what will happen until then. What if Pereira gets a red card in GW24 and you're in the same situation, without one player, but for a completely different reason? What if Newcastle bottles it and Brighton avoid BGW? We can't predict the future. Do what you think is the most sensible for your team.

Similar position here, in addition to the replacement for Cucurella. The candidates are NEW and BHA defenders, yet the GW25 potential blank makes it tricky. Hits will be involved if committed.

Next GW looks like a low scoring one for this team but struggling find a transfer clearly worth it. Maybe it will be best so save and reassess?

    Kepa
    Trippier Shaw Martinez
    Salah Rashford Martinelli Mount
    Haaland Kane Mitrovic

Ward Andreas Bueno Patterson - 1 FT, 0.8M ITB

    A) Save
    B) Mount > Odegaard
    C) Mitrovic > Toney
    D) Salah > KDB

Mount to Odegaard/Mitoma/March for me. Probably one of the Brighton mids this week

Anything worth it or save? 1FT and £1.6m ITB. Really tempted by the Brighton mid switch but means a benching headache and more potential GW25 blankers.

    A) Save
    B) Andreas to Mitoma/March (bench Martinelli?)

    Kepa
    Gabriel, Trippier, Botman
    KDB, Rashford, Odegaard, Martinelli
    Haaland, Kane, Toney

    Ward, Shaw, Andreas, Patterson

Want to get in Saka and Odegaard. Which one of these i should do to fund that -
    1. Kane -> Toney
    2. Mitro -> 4.5

    Team -
    Kepa ward
    Tripier Botman Ake Shaw white
    Salah rashford March
    Kane mitro halland

I don't think Saka's worth the extra 1.3m on Odergaard. Would just go Martinelli to Odergaard for this GW. Then Almiron to fodder.

Don't think its smart to take a hit with games still to play. We've seen the danger recently, and KDB missing training today is a warning (if not yet anything definitive).

I would wait for news on results from cup games and doubles/blanks and have 2 transfers into 22. Likely that Brighton and Brentford both blank in 25 if Newcastle and Man U each Carabao cup final. There may be better transfers going into 22.

Media duties wouldn't be do during training, though. Before or after.

I'm personally hoping he was given the session or day off for rest, given it's such a busy period and he's such a key player.

Just have to hope this is a Saka type situation. He is by far the key to their team - more so than Haaland - so kid gloves will be in play.
