After 38 often gruelling Gameweeks, the Fantasy Football community waves goodbye to the 2017/18 season and starts preparing for the next campaign.

The Hot Topic posters look back on the key events over the last few months and start to consider which players will help earn us a flying start when the new season kicks off in August.

The success and failures of the Premier League prediction business come under scrutiny in our community article section, which as usual features the latest developments in Norwegian top-flight Fantasy game, Elitserien.

Our community tournament round-up is extended this week as we congratulate the winners across a range of leagues, cups and competitions.

The Community Articles.

Armed with a season’s worth of crowd canvassing, Hutch_James delivered his final look at how groupthink fared in terms of predicting results this season.

The underlying statistics kings of the campaign are the focus of FPL Virgin’s latest article.

But while domestic action may be over Mr Klin of Norway served up a reminder that Norwegian game Fantasy Eliteserien is available to play throughout the summer with his latest weekly preview.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The 2017/18 ended in dramatic fashion with 31 goals scored on the final day. Our “rough with the smooth” collection of your Gameweek 38 scores reveals how this action-packed 90 minutes impacted on the community’s overall ranks and quest for mini-league glory.

Stat also dropped by to reveal how this year’s rank milestones compare to last season, while Red Lightning looked at the end of season chip strategy of FPL’s top players.

Discussions also took place on how the best FPL managers across a number of seasons are defined.

Our own Hall of Fame update revealed the top managers from our leagues as well as some of their key strategies for success this season. While Zan Keroski let us know about an alternative way of measuring career achievements, with a stronger focus on more recent ranks.

FPL Freddo added further thoughts to this debate, while former Hall of Fame top ten manager Triggerlips launched his own ‘haul of fame’ which rewards multiple top 1,000 finishes, even if they were some time ago.

Triggerlips was in fine form this week with two further Hot Topics, looking at the effect of the Triple Captain chip and whether anyone had a worst best Gameweek than him.

The 2017/18 campaign came under further scrutiny when we quizzed you on your most impactful decisions made over the season. Swinner added to the discussion by asking what defines a successful season, a good rank or beating a rival.

Fusen also waded in to let us know that he has bolstered his FPL Statistico season review tool to include a section that divides up the season in stages.

Elsewhere, this campaign’s most successful formations were the focus of The Mighty Hippo’s latest Hot Topic, while Legomane pondered the importance of a great start.

Ignoring Mohamed Salah for the captaincy was perhaps one of the more obvious oversights at times this season. Given the Liverpool winger has just accrued the largest points haul in Fantasy Premier League history a price hike seems inevitable. But, we asked, how much is too much to pay for the Egyptian record breaker.

This week’s chat also featured plenty of forward thinking as managers started scouting for the 2018/19 Berbinho’s Forehead, Giggs Boson and Asquishypotato all canvassed opinion on a number of clubs as they asked how Manchester United, Spurs and Liverpool can build and improve next season.

Champions Manchester City are one team who can perhaps relax their summer activity in the market, with Fantasy Gold predicting that they could dominate the Premier League for years to come.

Meanwhile, Grooveymatt65 has already started bargain hunting with his discussion on next season’s potential cut-price gems.

Among them could be teenage sensation Ryan Sessegnon, who may well be playing top flight football in 2018/19 should his Fulham side prevail in the play-off finals against Aston Villa. Fantasy Gold urges Fantasy managers to keep a close eye on the England Under 21s international.

England’s senior squad for the World Cup, which was announced this week, came under scrutiny in Giggs Boson’s Hot Topic, in which he asked the community to name the best starting XI from this group.

The World Cup chat continued with FFFrog’s number crunching post.

Back to domestic matters, the potential reclassification of some midfielders and forwards next season gets discussed in a post from Aarono23, while discussion on potential rule changes is the focus of Scoutcaster Az’s Hot Topic, where he asks whether FPL’s assist and bonus awards, as well as chips, need an overhaul.

Az earns a further mention after scooping an award for his appearances on our weekly podcast, which picked up a raft of other accolades this week.

With no Premier League action until August Niemi recommends Fantasy managers turn to Norway’s Eliteserien to fill the gap. He has set up a new league, which started scoring this week and also put forward a list of key players to consider.

Niemi’s hard work has been duly noted by community manager Geoff, who let us know that our Norwegian football expert has joined his expanding crew of moderators, with community regular Zoumasbloomers also joining the team.

A raft of new community features are planned over the summer, many of which will be based on feedback collected by Geoff this week. We also asked what improvements Members would like to the tools available to them.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

The Community Tournaments

Congratulations to Gregor, who has won 2017/18’s Scout Picks community champion competition. His 33 point margin of victory, achieved in Gameweek 5, proved unbeatable. He wins a £100 Amazon voucher and a place in next season’s moderators and contributors league.

Gameweek 38’s community champion Choppers 13 lost 89-74 to the Scouts.

A score of 74 was enough to secure Az first in the FFScout moderators and contributors league, six points ahead of second-placed Jack Wain.

I snatched the summit from QPR Utd in his own FFS Frequent Summer Posters league by transfers made (42 to 45), while Dan Jeffries wins the FFS Old Farts Club league for the site’s elder statesmen and women.

Epic Fail has won Gnu’s Wigan to Me head to head contest. However, he missed out on top spot to me in the Dugout draft leg of Teddy’s Iron man competition, in which Paul Brett scooped first in the FPL Draft element.

Sticking with FPL Draft, our fixture ticker guru Pure Olivia claims bragging rights at the top of the FFScout moderators and contributors league.

In Red Lightning’s competitions, Anders Lium has won his Top 10K Any Season league, Shirin Nizar grabs the January to May league crown, Balders takes top spot in his Doubles, Blanks and Chips mini league and Stuart Blakely scoops his Opening Day contest.

Grant Barclay won Az’s £20 cash league, beating the contest’s host by one point. Meanwhile, TimothyJ, who comfortably won Az’s £5 cash league, finishing with an overall rank of 238.

If you are running a community tournament for the World Cup and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Maybe it can go to penalties and then both teams could just keep missing for hours until the game is called off.. I think i'd find that acceptable.

What’s the player limit to get called off?

Red cards for really petty things like a touch on a face, Double yellows all round for diving and match abandoned.

Can’t think of two teams that I don’t want to win more hen these two.

United for boring their way to second place, which they consider a success.

Chelsea for their traditional off season so burgling their way to a trophy will appease people for a short time.

Yes you can tell what team I support.

    Yes I’m grouchy and hungover.

    Time for some football.

Chelsea's team and manager are not as bad as they used to be, some of them seem like nice enough people. But their fans, and their owner and the whole culture of the club is just horrific.

But then Mourinho, Pogba, Lukaku and the rest of Man Utd just irritate me beyond belief and that's before we even look at how they approach football

As a Fulham fan I'm finding it very disconcerting that if I had to pick, I want Chelsea to win... now I have to go wash my mouth out.

Despite being a Liverpool fan, I really liked what Conte did for them last season.

This season though, it looked like no one could be bothered, an air of smugness about how their season was going to go. That Watford game summed it up where everyone was blaming each other and no one takin responsibility. Fan culture and owners haven’t done their branding any favours either.

It really grates on me when I see players not putting the effort in. People have their names on their shirts for a reason, so ending the season with an ambivalent shrug says to me they don’t deserve silverware.

But United are United. And playing under Moaninho. So devil and the deep blue sea of choices.

Yeah Chelsea have been pathetic this season. It's odd because Conte had them working so hard and that's the kind of manager he is; his Italy team at the Euros just ran themselves into the ground and they over-performed because of it

I respectfully disagree - Although without Guerrero Peru don't look great Denmark and France have very strong sides and this is the weakest Australia side I've seen in recent times.

France should win the group. I wonder about Peru being away from home and not having Guerrero. Leaves it between Denmark and Australia for me. At the prices, Australia look value. I agree that Denmark should be second favourites, but their price just feels a bit short.

I like how this Denmark side play and I love how Eriksen plays for them - for me they're going to be rivalling France for first not Peru/ Australia for third.

Thoughts on this Telegraph FF team - playing 5-3-2 with the plan to use very few of my transfers on defence and have the strikers constantly rolling

    Akinfeev
    Meunier Varane Alba Godin Trippier
    Paulinho Muller David Silva
Cavani Messi (potentially start with Suarez)

Dividing the 26 group stages transfers into just over 8 a round, the plan would be to do Muller - Hazard or KDB and keep the strikers rolling game by game, so Cavani to (maybe) Griezmann to Mandzukic to Werner to Berg to Lukaku to Kane to JRod to Lewa or Milik.

    Thoughts?

Akinfeevs record st high level tournaments and international isn’t great. I’d absoloutly look elsewhere if possible.

Double check who is on pens without Cavani and Suarez.

      1. FFFrog
        • 10 Years

I totally agree with your point on Akinfeev - my reasoning was more that they're playing a virtually impotent Saudi Arabia in week 1 and because their attack is weak they'll be very focussed on staying defensively strong so not to embarass themselves - but Schmeichel and Pickford are my other main options and I don't know how much I like them

        1. FFFrog

And also as Russia play first if they're awful then I can simply transfer him out for any of the other options available!

Your going to get murdered by Russia block defence. The team is good but one cs by Russia vs Saudi and your needing 5 scorers or cs to catch up

      1. FFFrog
        • 10 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

Looking past the first match, do you think that over the 3 weeks either keeping a Russia block d or using 3/4 transfers to get rid of it is going to be a better use of those transfers than say Lukaku, Werner, Lewandowski and Hazard or will get more points across the three weeks than Meunier, Ramos/ Alba, Godin and Varane?

        1. Yozzer
          • 8 Years
          7 years, 6 months ago

The problem is after the first 2 matches May be then the defence block switches to Switzerland maybe?

I hate playing block defence but you really do get left behind if you don't. Leader board is usually full of block defences. I see your point but the fact is they have overdone it with the amount of transfers. Players can afford to make many changes . I almost feel forced into playing a block

        2. Yozzer

Don't forget there are usually less goal in the opening games. Prime time for CS

            • 10 Years

I agree that using it against Saudi could pay off but then if Egypt score the week after then you're left with an entire defence without a single clean sheet, when if you play your cards right from the bigger teams you could easily get 3/4 and some attacking points from players like Meunier.

              • 9 Years

Whilst also having the full amount of transfers to bring in as many strikers as possible. France, Spain, Uruguay, Belgium and England should all bring in two clean sheets across the three rounds and are, for me, more likely to each do so than Russia keeping 2 clean sheets, meaning however far behind I've fallen after the first game I should be able to come back by the end of the group stage.

    C) France, Denmark, Peru, Australia
    D) Argentina, Croatia, Iceland, Nigeria
    E) Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Serbia
    F) Germany, Mexico, Sweden, South Korea
    G) Belgium, England, Tunisia, Panama
    H) Colombia, Poland, Senegal, Japan

Russia v Egypt is a close call. Home advantage might just give them the edge.

I've tipped all games and have Croatia tied with Argentina on top of the group with 7pts.
But would be a big surprise for me if both Croatia and Iceland qualify ahead of Argentina.
I know they have been dire recently but usually step up their game when it matters.

It would be a shock of course, but I can just kinda see Argentina only getting 3 (all draws) or 4 points out of their group and Iceland sneeking through in 2nd

I would perhaps back Nigeria instead of Iceland to do this, only because they've recently beaten Argentina.

Shocks happen. Uruguay are not the force of old and Egypt might surprise. Nigeria are capable of causing a shock (looking at Argentina) and don't think you can write off South Korea as their work rate is decent. Group H could easily surprise.

Anyone watching Juve players getting medals under torrential rain? They are getting a guard honor from bunch kids. Poor children

Anyone here atall think Chelsea can win today?

Mourinho is hungry for a cup and a master of trophy winning, however his team are prone to bottling it in the big moments and you can't rule out Conte and Hazard however poor Chelsea have been at points this season. They've got as good a chance as their opponents at the very least.

Chelsea fan. Not confident. Rarely has all of our team showed up in the same game this season, but there is always a possibility. League form out the window and all that.

Hazard is good enough to win it for them. Could depend on his performance. United slight favourites though

Whoever wins is just borrowing the trophy from Arsenal for a year. Emirates sponorship of the FA cup is on condition that Arsenal lift it 2 out of every 3 years.

Someone explain to me why Smalling isn’t in the England squad, and is behind Danny Rose (injured or rotated most of the season), Ashley Young, Kieran Trippier (the 3rd of 3 right backs in the team), among others, in the pecking order?

One of the more baffling exclusions in my opinion.
