One of the world’s best FPL managers, Tom Freeman (aka avfc82), is back with his first column of 2020/21. Tom looks at lessons learned from last season, Chelsea’s exciting options and the newly promoted clubs.

With the Premier League full fixture schedule set to be released no later than Friday, it’s time to get those notepads out and start planning.

I’ve got to admit, I’m looking forward to getting back into a more familiar routine in terms of Gameweek deadlines. The relentless nature of Project Restart meant it was hard to keep pace and it’s fair to say that it didn’t suit my playing style at all. There was no time to think, and for those of you who have watched my ‘Meet the Manager’ video, you’ll know how much I value time.

So, how did the 2019/20 season end?

Well, it wasn’t a bad campaign at all, but was somewhat short of where I want to be, finishing with an overall rank of 16,668 – 17 points off my top 10k target.

Why did I fail? Having run a bit of analysis over the last week, I keep coming back to one thing. No, it wasn’t owning Theo Walcott (£6.0m) for three Gameweeks back in November (!), it was chip strategy following the restart, which went like this:

Gameweek 30+ – Free Hit
Gameweek 33+ – Wildcard
Gameweek 34+ – Bench Boost

Had I gone down the Gameweek 30+ Bench Boost route like many did, I’m pretty sure I’d be sat here with a ninth top 10k finish in the bag, but hey, that’s the way it goes sometimes.

I now sit 15th in the Career Hall of Fame, with my updated season history as follows:

Looking ahead to the new season, how good is it to see Mark Sutherns, a true legend of the game, back? With Lateriser and Zophar also offering insight on here, quite a team of contributors is being assembled. I’ll be back too, writing regular columns, plus Spot the Differential, with hopefully a few video appearances thrown in along the way.

As is usually the case during the off-season, Fantasy managers have a lot of time on their hands, and I’ve already seen quite a few strategy guides and threads popping up on social media; the kind of dos and don’ts of FPL. There is nothing wrong with it but to consistently achieve high ranks year in, year out, my advice would be don’t be too rigid and set in your ways – there is no rulebook. Be adaptable, be flexible and don’t be afraid to rip up plans at the last minute.

For sure, there are a few tried and trusted methods I try to stick to, like saving a free transfer whenever possible or holding onto my first Wildcard for as long as I can (early ones rarely work for me), but with one or two clubs possibly being given extra time off by the Premier League having reached the latter stages of European competition, these ideas may be completely redundant in a few weeks’ time – who knows what the new season will throw at us?

Another thing I touched upon in my ‘Meet the Manager’ video, was that it’s worth spending a bit of time now researching the newly promoted sides. Why? Well, you’ll find some solid, cheap picks, and possibly one or two misclassifications, like John Lundstram (£5.5m) and Keinan Davis (£4.5m) last season. Even if you don’t plan on starting with anyone from Leeds United, West Bromwich Albion or Fulham, get that knowledge in place now, so you’re ready to move quickly once the season kicks off.

I’ve also seen a couple of threads suggesting all of the above sides will be slow starters. It doesn’t matter – they can still deliver points, especially offensive players.

Aston Villa and Norwich City lost in Gameweek 1 last season, yet Teemu Pukki and John McGinn (£5.5m) still found the back of the net against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur respectively. Then, in Gameweek 2, there was Lundstram and Pukki’s double-digit hauls, while Todd Cantwell and Jack Grealish (£7.0m) were also amongst the assists.

David and Neale’s recent articles are a good starting point, while Statsbomb, Stats Perform and All Stats Aren’t We have all written some really good stuff on Leeds.

It’s also worth listening to those in the community who watch their team’s week in, week out. There are plenty of good posters on the forum and on Twitter, so keep an eye on what they’re saying. I’m not saying blindly follow them (sometimes they get it wrong), but what you will get is a fan’s perspective on what is happening at a club, which can be useful.

In terms of transfers, it’s understandably been a bit of a slow window so far, but Chelsea’s new signings are firmly on my radar. Hakim Ziyech (£8.0m) is at a peak age to excel, while Timo Werner (£9.5m) could be a steal and should settle quickly, as most Bundesliga imports do. Add in Christian Pulisic (£8.5m), and this team is going to be a lot of fun next season. If they can resolve their issues at the back, I think they could turn out to be the best of the rest behind Manchester City and Liverpool.

Talking of City, Ferran Torres (£7.0m) probably isn’t going to be an option from the off but looks like a decent dribbler with plenty of potential. He’s been playing as a right midfielder in a 4-4-2 at Valencia, so it’ll be interesting to see how Pep Guardiola uses him, and how he adapts to a more possession-based system.

Tomas Soucek (£5.0m) and Nathan Ferguson (£4.0m) could be solid enablers too, but as is the case with everyone, fixtures will dictate whether or not they are genuine options.

Regarding motivation for the new season, I’ll leave this quote from ESPN reporter David Aldridge, which is taken from the superb Netflix documentary ‘The Last Dance’, and talks about ‘The Separator’ and Michael Jordan’s quest for three Championships in a row:

A lot of the people in that era, that you would consider Michael’s peers had won two in a row. Isiah had won two straight, Magic had won two straight… but, none of them had won three in a row. The third championship was the Separator. You win three and you’re on Mount Rushmore. So, for that team it was all about winning a third straight.

You can think of a sixth top 1k finish as my ‘Separator’ – let’s see if I can nail it.

Finally, there will be a lot of ‘noise’ out there over the next few weeks. All I’d say is don’t get too influenced by others, play your own game and most importantly, have some fun!

Thanks for reading…

I think Leeds most likely of the promoted but if you're looking at lower clubs in general I think Southampton.

Since the restart they got 5w, 3d, 1l including draws with utd & Everton plus victory over city. Based on that it's top 4 form, doubt they'll quite repeat it but they look good.

There is so much value in defence so I don't see the need to get Robertson and Doherty at the expense of Fernandes, whose ownership is already though the roof.

This is the conundrum I have Fernandes and 4.5s or a Greenwood with Doherty and Robertson

Too many big hitters in midfield makes the rest of the team look a bit meh imo.
Robbo and Doherty are both very attacking in good defending teams. Greenwood is a steal at 7.5 (as long as they don't sign someone else)

I'd stick with that as Salah means you can switch to any on form player. Bruno without money itb would mean if any of sterling, auba, mane and Salah start hitting big you'll need to rejig quite a bit.

How much do you value xG? Unless I'm mistaken he has the highest in the league last season. His away blues definitely need to change though.

And if Thiago signs, this will take Salah to another level.

That's just my thoughts though, I don't think Auba is as good as City or Liverpool premiums.

Yes. Of course he's going to score lots of goals and lots of points. I just thinking owning him at the right time is key, and captaining him even more so.

I have a different level of trust in Salah, KDB, Sterling and captain is the biggest reason why. For me anyway.

After seeing lots of “Rate May Teams”, I thought I’d add my own but with a bit of explanation behind my logic and what I want for my team. Apologies for the length of the post in advance...

I started by making a list of what I want for my team and a rough spend profile. I started with:

        - Werner, TAA, 2 premium midfielders,
        - At least 7 or 8 players from MCI, LIV, MUN and CHE,
        - No more than £9.0m on GK’s
        - A least 14 players guaranteed to start (including both GK’s), mainly because of Pep and that I’ll be trying to keep 2FT where possible.
        - A maximum of 1 punt

        MID:
With the bulk of budget being spent in the Midfield, I’m starting here….

        - KDB, Bruno, Ziyech, Foden, Sucek

There are two players in my squad who will be season keepers; KDB and Bruno. No explanation needed aside from that KDB is chosen ahead of Sterling, solely because of Aguero returning.
I can’t afford 12.0m for Salah/Mane but LIV will be covered by my defence.
I like the look of Ziyech and think CHE will be scoring a lot this year, with him or Pulisic being heavily involved. At 8.0m, he’s £0.5m cheaper than Pulisic and in a price bracket that will be easy to swap him out if he doesn’t hit the ground running

Foden is the big punt this year for me. I hope this will be his breakthrough season and that, as he knows Pep’s way of playing better than Torres, he’ll be involved in 2 out of 3 games. If not, he’s out for a 5.5m and the 1.0m will go toward my third FW.

There is a lot of value in the lower price MID bracket this year players I’ve fancied here include ASM and Podence. At the time of writing Periera (WBA) isn’t included in the game but I’ll give him consideration if he’s cheap enough.
For now, I’m going with Soucek simply because he’ll be a starter and passed the eye-test following the restart.

GK: With two main options of set-and-forget or a rotation pairing, I’ve decided on a rotation pair to allow avoidance of tough fixtures.
The best pair, for me, are Ryan and McCarthy – both cheap enough and BHA and SOT are traditionally a home/away rotation pairing. (If fixtures are not favourable, I’ll be going for a 5.0 / 4.0 pair)

        - Ryan, McCarthy

DEF: I need LIV coverage here as a priority and have went for both TAA and Robertson.

        - TAA, Robertson, Vinagre, Justin, Ayling

With the two premiums locked, the selection of the other DEFs becomes that toughest decision for the GW1 squad.

Vinagre should be a starter and the cheapest way into a the WOL backline.
Ayling’s stats from last season have impressed me and from what I’ve seen/read, he is nailed and the main creative threat in a tight Leeds defence.
With Periera out and Chilwell off to CHE (???), I’m going with Justin (LEI) as my 3rd cheap DEF. Other choices were Walker-Peters / Salisu, Lascelles and Saliba.

With TAA/Robertson nailed, I’ll be going 3 or 4 at the back with the others rotating based on fixture difficulty.
5 at the back is a non-starter, anyone who tells you they’re going 5 at the back is a troll, an idiot, or a genius – we’ll know which one by GW2.

        FW:

        - Werner, Antonio, Bamford

Werner was the first player selected in my squad. No explanation needed.
Antonio was someone on my shortlist for the restart. I didn’t choose him. I dropped a LOT of places in OR. He’s in for now unless WHU get a bad set of GW1-6 fixtures, if they do get a tough start Wood comes in.
Bamford is only in as a placeholder and will be 2nd sub for most games.

So, my squad, for now, is:

        - Ryan, McCarthy
        - TAA, Robertson, Vinagre, Justin, Ayling
        - KDB, Bruno, Ziyech, Foden, Sucek
        - Werner, Antonio, Bamford

All feedback is welcome and good luck for the new season,
        cheers.

I like it, obviously Salah-less but so were most teams post restart

I would be tempted to leave 0.5 /1 mfor an upgrade on Ziyech to Pulisic by downgrading Justin/Ayling to Ferguson or Bamford to a fodder

          Sound logic. Good luck.

Can't really fault your reasoning but I personally disagree with omitting Salah and being so stubborn on Werner. Martial at 9m seems a much surer bet for me. He was 2nd highest point scorer post restart and has looked like a 20+ goal forward since Fernandes joined. I'm really unsure on Chelsea hence punting on both Werner + Ziyech doesn't appeal.

I also don't like the structure you have with too much on the bench.

You are bleeding about 2m in value on the bench. 0.5m at keeper, 0.5m in defense, 1m in attack. That money could be used to upgrade Foden or Ziyech.

A generally solid 15. Can’t argue on that front, but:

I would be tempted to go 8.5 on keepers. I thought 9m rotating pair last year, turned out I used Pope almost every week and the odd time I went the other way, half of those times I was wrong. I changed by new year when Gazzaniga popped up.

Fundamentally, the average amount of points gained won’t justify the extra 0.5m you could upgrade a regular starter with. Chances are your 4.5 keepers get 2-3 points most weeks. They’re lucky to get a clean sheet. Extremely lucky to get bonus/pen saves. Extremely unlucky when the one on the bench gets a clean sheet, save points, bonus points and a pen save. When this seasons Pope/Henderson emerge, jump on them.

Equally, I am going to write off the third striker for now. Early doors there is value in defenders or just holding money ITB for week 1/2 transfers. One of Soucek/Bamford will only play for you when one of your main team don’t, again, the money is spent better elsewhere.

          I like it.
A bit different than mine, as I've gone for TAA + Salah for LIV coverage and no CHE cover yet.
Could do Greenwood -> Ziyech though. Will ofc wait for the fixtures to be announced.
Find it hard to choose between Dallas and Ayling...

I'm always a bit sceptical to choosing played that are new to the PL. Most players need some adapting at the beginning, which is why I've stayed clear of Werner and Ziyech for now. I find Pulisic the most attractive CHE asset currently. All subject to change, ofc.

I might do Greenwood Foden -> Pulisic Soucek. All dipends if MUN brings in Sancho or not (makes Greenwood more uncertain to start).

          My team:

          McCarthy Ryan
          TAA Vinagre Taylor Dallas Ferguson
          Salah KDB Bruno Greenwood Foden
          Antonio Wood Davis

          0.5 ITB

Very strong first 11 with a good first sub. The only comment I have is that I'm sceptical of Greenwood at £7.5m and would consider swapping him out for a cheaper mid, with the option of getting a stronger 3rd Def or a forward who gets at least 60mins per game to account for Pep roulette.

Cheers! I'm not sure about Greenwood either. I might change to Pulisic or Ziyech. Not too keen on a stronger 3rd def or a better forward. All of this might change once the fixtures are released though 🙂

          Really enjoyed that read.

Aside the no Liverpool attack, Only concern be the two Chelsea and money on the bench. Could get some variety by changing Ziyech > Son and saving the money from bamford

Thanks to everyone for taking time to comment on my post above.

I've listened to most (some) of your comments and have made the following changes:

          Ryan > 4.0m
          Justin > 4.0
          Bamford > Wood

          - McCarthy, Nyland,
          - TAA, Robertson, Vinagre, Ayling, Ferguson
          - KDB, Bruno, Ziyech, Foden, Sucek
          - Werner, Antonio, Wood

          This still gives a strong first 11, the flexibility of 343 / 352 / 433 / 442 / 451, and a good first and second sub

          Cheers

        Ryan/Button

        TAA / Robbo / Vinagre

Klich (5.5m) to be this year’s mcginn. Bielsa’s favourite, starts every game, gets into good positions and is on pens. Way sexier pick than any others in and around that bracket

Bissouma (4.5m) worth a shout too. Was one of Brighton’s best players post lockdown. Loves to take a shot and is part of an ever improving Brighton team x

Between the two but reality is that Leeds share goals around a lot given the nature of their attack.

Neither is likely to have the same GI that McGinn had when he was hot early on. The pretty triangles and changing positions mean that just about any of the front 6 can return. Much less predictable than Villa where it was McGinn Grealish or no one

Any love for this big 4 mids team to start the season?:

        Ryan 4.0

        Tierney/gomez Trent Vinegre Taylor 4.0

        Auba Salah Kdb Bruno Richie

        4.5 4.5 5.5 ( best promoted striker)

        Arguments for :
I cover all of the premium mids then move the one out that isn't performing as well for better value options.
Easy to jump on bandwagons ( don't mind taking a hit or too early on).
Its easier to predict at least 2 of those 4 will do well early on than bringing in a couple of mid-priced options
I think the team is very respectable given that I have the big four don't feel like I've given up too much anywhere else.
I think Richie is underpriced by 1.0 considering he could well be on pens and a lot of set pieces and should be nailed with no take0ver bid materialising.

        Arguments against:

Almost surely better value combos elsewhere ( but hard to predict which ones early season!)
4 at the back makes things even less flexible.

I hate to say it but I probably do prefer the 'conventional wisdom' of starting with one premium priced striker, probably whichever of Kane & Werner has the better starting statistics, making it very easy to switch to whichever of Martial/Vardy/Aguero etc ends up going on a run.

And I think two 4.5's up front is a bit of a waste, there are plenty of viable picks in the 5.5 to 6.5 range, guys who are reasonably likely to break 100 pts over the season, whereas a 4.5 will likely get you zilch.

Hmm. A high performing 4.5 defender will rack up over 80pts over a season. That sort of point scoring ability is well worth having on your roster.

Re. your last point - there isn't. The cheapest viable striker is 6m, a few at 6.5 and then you have to go 8.5+
2x 4.5 strikers is a huge risk but doable so long as your most expensive striker is guaranteed to play and occasionally do something, like a Wood or Mitrovic. For me, a 5.5 like Bamford is just a guaranteed 2 pointer and a waste.

Former owner here and LFC supporter: Love him in reality, but in fantasy he is a walking card machine, never in the bonus points, stays back on corners, VVD plays all of the long balls over the top for assists, never Gomez. He's either clean sheet with a booking or conceding with a booking, and no upside on that. Would rather a cheap winger who has a chance at goals/assists in a positive attack that utilizes wingbacks (Tierney, in my case).

KDB was top scorer last year, he's the most creative player, it's easy for him to get bonus points, he's on penalties, he's on free-kicks, he has great shot, but still it seems so counter intuintive to pick him over the player that operates in the box and is more likely to score goals, at the same price. Sterling outscored KDB post restart if I'm not wrong, and it would be some margin if it wasn't the last haul with two goals from KDB.

Yeah I think so too. I think he's on for a big season. Scored 9 goals in the last 9 GWs of the season.

If City have a fixture in GW 1 and decent enough fixtures, I will likely have him. You have to have at least 2 City to take advantage because everyone is going to have KdB.

Kun if fit could be a major differential. My mission is to catch his hauls this season as my captain. Have missed it the last 2 season and it has cost me big time.

        A) Robbo KDB
        B VVD Salah

Tough question, there's not much in it. I suppose I'd go for whichever of KdB and Salah you prefer & take things from there, with an armband to allocate the most important thing is getting the superpremium picks right .

Manchester United and Manchester City will get a later start to the 2020-21 season after being dumped out of Europe with the Premier League promising a 30-day rest period ahead of new campaign on September 12

        https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8635021/Manchester-United-Manchester-City-later-start-new-season-Europe-exits.html

Maybe we have to go GW1 without Man United,Man City,Wolves..

The article seems to be stressing that the managers are requesting a later start, and I got the impression the PL will be sympathetic.

"One solution is for the Premier League to make it so that City and United play Wolves and Chelsea in their opening fixture, so that all four sides are awarded an extended rest periods. Sources close to the compiling of the fixture list are staying tight-lipped on whether that will be granted."

Going to be evil but very exciting if this happens. All four out = WC's incoming.

Mitrovic got 134 points when Fulham were last in the top flight, which isn't too bad for a striker from a relegated team. He's their target man and is on penalties.

I need to pick 2 from 3 premium midfielders and I can't decide. I was originally going Auba + Salah, but omitting KDB feels like it could be a rank killer. I think Aubamayang as a midfielder in an improving Arsenal squad (especially if he's happy and looking to stay there) could be a great option, so potentially Salah misses out?

        What's your recommended 2 picks?

        a) Salah
        b) Auba
        c) KDB

Personally don't see Villa buying another keeper, Nyland and Steer are more than capable filling in for the mean time. If they do obviously the 2 4.0m idea goes out the window.
