One of the world’s best FPL managers, Tom Freeman (aka avfc82), is back with his first column of 2020/21. Tom looks at lessons learned from last season, Chelsea’s exciting options and the newly promoted clubs.

With the Premier League full fixture schedule set to be released no later than Friday, it’s time to get those notepads out and start planning.

I’ve got to admit, I’m looking forward to getting back into a more familiar routine in terms of Gameweek deadlines. The relentless nature of Project Restart meant it was hard to keep pace and it’s fair to say that it didn’t suit my playing style at all. There was no time to think, and for those of you who have watched my ‘Meet the Manager’ video, you’ll know how much I value time.

So, how did the 2019/20 season end?

Well, it wasn’t a bad campaign at all, but was somewhat short of where I want to be, finishing with an overall rank of 16,668 – 17 points off my top 10k target.

Why did I fail? Having run a bit of analysis over the last week, I keep coming back to one thing. No, it wasn’t owning Theo Walcott (£6.0m) for three Gameweeks back in November (!), it was chip strategy following the restart, which went like this:

Gameweek 30+ – Free Hit
Gameweek 33+ – Wildcard
Gameweek 34+ – Bench Boost

Had I gone down the Gameweek 30+ Bench Boost route like many did, I’m pretty sure I’d be sat here with a ninth top 10k finish in the bag, but hey, that’s the way it goes sometimes.

I now sit 15th in the Career Hall of Fame, with my updated season history as follows:

Looking ahead to the new season, how good is it to see Mark Sutherns, a true legend of the game, back? With Lateriser and Zophar also offering insight on here, quite a team of contributors is being assembled. I’ll be back too, writing regular columns, plus Spot the Differential, with hopefully a few video appearances thrown in along the way.

As is usually the case during the off-season, Fantasy managers have a lot of time on their hands, and I’ve already seen quite a few strategy guides and threads popping up on social media; the kind of dos and don’ts of FPL. There is nothing wrong with it but to consistently achieve high ranks year in, year out, my advice would be don’t be too rigid and set in your ways – there is no rulebook. Be adaptable, be flexible and don’t be afraid to rip up plans at the last minute.

For sure, there are a few tried and trusted methods I try to stick to, like saving a free transfer whenever possible or holding onto my first Wildcard for as long as I can (early ones rarely work for me), but with one or two clubs possibly being given extra time off by the Premier League having reached the latter stages of European competition, these ideas may be completely redundant in a few weeks’ time – who knows what the new season will throw at us?

Another thing I touched upon in my ‘Meet the Manager’ video, was that it’s worth spending a bit of time now researching the newly promoted sides. Why? Well, you’ll find some solid, cheap picks, and possibly one or two misclassifications, like John Lundstram (£5.5m) and Keinan Davis (£4.5m) last season. Even if you don’t plan on starting with anyone from Leeds United, West Bromwich Albion or Fulham, get that knowledge in place now, so you’re ready to move quickly once the season kicks off.

I’ve also seen a couple of threads suggesting all of the above sides will be slow starters. It doesn’t matter – they can still deliver points, especially offensive players.

Aston Villa and Norwich City lost in Gameweek 1 last season, yet Teemu Pukki and John McGinn (£5.5m) still found the back of the net against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur respectively. Then, in Gameweek 2, there was Lundstram and Pukki’s double-digit hauls, while Todd Cantwell and Jack Grealish (£7.0m) were also amongst the assists.

David and Neale’s recent articles are a good starting point, while Statsbomb, Stats Perform and All Stats Aren’t We have all written some really good stuff on Leeds.

It’s also worth listening to those in the community who watch their team’s week in, week out. There are plenty of good posters on the forum and on Twitter, so keep an eye on what they’re saying. I’m not saying blindly follow them (sometimes they get it wrong), but what you will get is a fan’s perspective on what is happening at a club, which can be useful.

In terms of transfers, it’s understandably been a bit of a slow window so far, but Chelsea’s new signings are firmly on my radar. Hakim Ziyech (£8.0m) is at a peak age to excel, while Timo Werner (£9.5m) could be a steal and should settle quickly, as most Bundesliga imports do. Add in Christian Pulisic (£8.5m), and this team is going to be a lot of fun next season. If they can resolve their issues at the back, I think they could turn out to be the best of the rest behind Manchester City and Liverpool.

Talking of City, Ferran Torres (£7.0m) probably isn’t going to be an option from the off but looks like a decent dribbler with plenty of potential. He’s been playing as a right midfielder in a 4-4-2 at Valencia, so it’ll be interesting to see how Pep Guardiola uses him, and how he adapts to a more possession-based system.

Tomas Soucek (£5.0m) and Nathan Ferguson (£4.0m) could be solid enablers too, but as is the case with everyone, fixtures will dictate whether or not they are genuine options.

Regarding motivation for the new season, I’ll leave this quote from ESPN reporter David Aldridge, which is taken from the superb Netflix documentary ‘The Last Dance’, and talks about ‘The Separator’ and Michael Jordan’s quest for three Championships in a row:

A lot of the people in that era, that you would consider Michael’s peers had won two in a row. Isiah had won two straight, Magic had won two straight… but, none of them had won three in a row. The third championship was the Separator. You win three and you’re on Mount Rushmore. So, for that team it was all about winning a third straight.

You can think of a sixth top 1k finish as my ‘Separator’ – let’s see if I can nail it.

Finally, there will be a lot of ‘noise’ out there over the next few weeks. All I’d say is don’t get too influenced by others, play your own game and most importantly, have some fun!

Thanks for reading…

I was just being a bit cheeky - I like Martial more myself, but that may just be a touch of bias because I see Jimenez as a 'boring' pick. It's worth noting Jimenez should be better than last year's output due to no EL though.

As for the others, to be honest I think I prefer Soucek over ASM regardless.

Personally I think that would makes him less attractive, at Burnely he's probably the 2nd person on the team sheet after Pope. To much competition at Leicester despite being the more attacking team.

Tierney has nothing like the record of Doc or TAA.
It's not quite an equivalent though as it brings in the double up question, but even given that yes would still go Doc & jimmy

Even more reason for Mou to park the bus in every game and conserve energy until the congestion clears. Hello, Lloris

As for team performance dropping due to fatigue, YES. Poch trained these guys to be workhorses anyway, so fatigue WILL count, but probably not as much as it did for Burnley and Wolves. They also have some squad depth, so I don't think Mou will pump many first XI regulars against the likely opponents in those rounds

This still counts as a reason not to start with a Spurs attacker... I think

Highest ranked team they can possibly play in their 1st round is the team that finished 3rd in the Cypriot league last season. Will be a good chance to give the back-ups a run out after a limited pre-season.

Ben Dinnery had something about travel hours affecting squads last season. So it's not only about playing/starting those games, but the trips across Europe as well... Which then brings up the question of Covid-19... Ah well

Budget option below 7.5m price point is being dominated by Midfeilders with vast array of options

Better to go with 3-5-2 as you can easily punt on players at 7.5m price point right?

    Viable 7.5m Forwards
    -----------------------------------
    DCL
    Wood
    Antonio
    Mitrovic
    Maupay
    Adams
    Ayew

    Viable 7.5 Midfeilders

    Greenwood
    Maddison
    Grealish
    Foden
    Bowen
    Traore
    Trossard
    McNeil

The picking aren't great below sub-premium, hence I'm spending that budget in defence - 5 at the back for me.

Similar - I keep landing on less in midfield, more in defence & up top too

Midfield just seems rammed with 11.0/12.0's & then only really Greenwood/Pulisic below them

Vinagre & Taylor's appeal keep me from going to a back 5 at the minute though - TAA, VVD, Laporte + those two rotating is a concession I'm currently making to the FPL God of Balance... How long that lasts I don't know though as both Robbo & Doherty are calling...

I'm coming round to thinking that with no Euro distractions to force rotation, Wolves defence will be outstanding. I had Vinagre for value but whoever has him will be forced into a transfer once Jonny returns, so I've found 0.5 extra to have Saiss join Doherty and my Three Big Reds in a back 5.

Those 3 Pool defenders are a magnificent sight to behold on any FPL teamsheet

Everyone should select them at least once, even if it's just in pre-season tinkering - just to witness the majesty of them all together in the same FPL backline 🙂

I don't want you to get TOO excited - it's three Reds defenders, not 'THE three reds defenders'. I reduced Robbo to Gomez in order to get the rest of the squad sorted.

I'd say an asterix could be put beside Greenwood there in that he looks like a bit of an error on their part in the best possible way (a la Martial last year)

We all probably feel he should cost a little more than he does, but luckily he just wasn't in the team for quite long enough to get hit with another 1.0 or so

He could be 9.5 next season whereas the others on that list - they feel more like genuine 6.5-7.5 players & don't hold the same potential appeal tbh

Graned Saka & Traore maybe could do more & Soucek looks a very handy cheapie

You genuinely think Greenwood can be as good as Martial was last year? What makes me doubt it is he's still a kid, whereas Martial is just coming up to his athletic prime. Someone at Greenwood's age would probably need to be protected more in a congested schedule etc.

Do you expect him to come close to Martial's output from last year?

If Greenwood scores in the 130-140 point range, then 7.5 is not necessarily underpriced.

Martial’s output last year was that of a premium player - he doesn’t have to come close to it to be underpriced.

If he’s nailed all season he could score 15 or more. As a mid. As a 7.5 mid. Nobody anywhere near that price bracket has that sort of potential.

Lol I confused him with Rashford - yes, I agree about Martial then 😀

My point about Greenwood is the nailed-ness. As I said above, he's still a kid so will have to be protected, compared to Martial who's coming up to his prime.

                  • 15 Years

Yeah I'd probably initially try not to venture a prediction that Greenwood this year will be "as good" as Martial was this year, as it's a bit simplistic - next season is a different beast, and who knows what way things will go

                  But...

If someone *did* put a gun to my head & asked me could I see Greenwood going from scoring 10 goals in 1,300 minutes this season to scoring Martial's 17 goals in X Minutes (say double minutes = 2600?) next season?

I'd probably say that transfer activity/RWF competitor notwithstanding - he has a reasonable chance of doing so, yes - a couple of hauls vs. a few whipping boys would get him well on the way for example

But the information would have been obtained under duress & would have to be caveated as such 🙂

Good options but formations definitely change depending on fixtures, form, injuries, expected rotation etc. Don't think anyone can say I am going 3-5-2 every week.

What rotation? How do you know which ones Foden will start? What if he's benched and your other option has a match against Liverpool?

    2. Greek Freak

He'll probably be one of the most likely players to come on when he's benched though. Mahrez very rarely plays 90 for example, so a popular pattern would be for one of them to get around 70 and the other one to get around 20. (in the occasions that Foden is used up front)

Until he's looking like a he plays 3 out of every 4 games he's an avoid for me.
At his price, he's so easy to jump on if he starts the first two.

And even if he does I don't think people gambled on him will have a huge headstart because City spread the points around so much I can't see him getting double hauls even if he does suddenly become a nailed on starter.

Well I know I *should* wait for fixtures, but I've gone and jumped the gun anyway. My draft contained 6 players from Manchester so I've knocked up something completely different on the assumption that they sit out GW1. Can always revert to the previous draft if they don't.

Anyway, bet you've not seen a 5-2-3 formation yet. I know, I know, it's supposed to be the worst yada yada, but check it out:

    Martinez (ie a 4.5)
    TAA, VVD, Gomez, Doherty, Saiss
    Auba, KDB (bench GW1)
    Jimenez, Ings, Mitrovic

    Nyland, Soucek, Ritchie, Gordon

Gomez is a waste of a Liverpool spot for me, but I know you’re set on it.

      Why Saiss over vinagre?

I think 2 first XI mids is a mistake, but that’s probably not useful feedback!

I just changed Vinagre to Saiss for 2 reasons. First who has V will have to transfer him out when Jonny is back. I'm looking long term and I think with no Euro worries, Wolves' defence will be outstanding. Second, V has no attacking potential whereas Saiss pops up with goals and assists.

I only want 2 captaincy options - more is sub-optimal and I've spread funds more evenly across defence and attack. I've since made a change - adding Greenwood and sacrificing Ings to Adams to enable that.

You forgot the 'if'. These 'if' posts are particularly pointless given that the whole game rests on 'ifs'. I am aware of the rules; I'm also aware of the potential points hauls over the season. I'm calculating that in terms of CS and defensive hauls, Liverpool will be first and Wolves either second or a close third to City - who rotate annoyingly. I can see TAA being rested for a small number of games and still coming top of the defender points table again, and the other 4 almost never missing a game.

It's a direct comparison as Roberston is replacing Greenwood and changing the formation

Robertson is replacing a defender that could chip in with points either playing every week or through a rotation.

The fifth defender on the bench in a 4-4-2 can easily do this, especially with the extra 0.5m... Which can also be spent on Soucek in midfield on the bench, coming in through rotation

A 3-5-2 with Greenwood has the same number of subs/rotating possibilities as a 4-4-2 with Robbo, especially since Robbo is cheaper

What exactly do you mean here?

                5 years, 3 months ago

That’s my point. It’s not just a direct comparison of two players. It has other effects too.

                  What other effects?

                  Robertson + 4.5 midfielder(3rd sub)

                  Vs

                  Greenwood + 4 defender( 3rd sub)

Your other 13 players are the same!

                    5 years, 3 months ago

It could’ve been a £4.5m defender that he could’ve used in a rotation. My point was it wasn’t just who scores more Greenwood or Robertson, but the other players too...

                2. Ze_Austin
                  • 7 Years
                  5 years, 3 months ago

The other effect in a 4-4-2 being he gets 0.5m extra to spend on his 5th defender or midfielder that can rotate with his other defenders, and gets Robbo who's expected to outscore Greenwood over a season. In a 3-5-2 without Robbo, this would mean 0.5m less for his 4th defender, who's serving exactly the same purpose

                  1. The Sarjeant
                    • 12 Years
                    5 years, 3 months ago

Yes, I understand all that. But Greenwood + the defender in a rotation *could* out score the Robertson + midfielder at the beginning of the season, especially if Greenwood + defender has decent fixtures. But I do think Robertson scores more points than Greenwood overall.

KDB, Bruno and TAA as captains. Doc (possible captain in very rare circumstances), Robbo, Lloris, Ziyech, Pulisic (possible rare captain, Mahrez as a placeholder), Greenwood, one 6.5 transferrable forward based on form (starting with Antonio), one 4.5 transferrable defender based on fixtures (starting with Vinagre). The 8.5m mid slot (Ings, Jimenez) and 6.5m forward slot (Foden and below) are interchangeable based on form and fixtures, but captaincy stays locked on those top 3 and the spine of 8 players stays... Save for injuries and other surprises, of course

Id say A is punty but actually safer long term. Werner can easily be swapped to pretty much anyone. Soucek is a capable enabler. He might not do much, or he could be a bargain. Either way a budget m idfielder is always a given.
6.5 strikers may well prove quite capable & usually represent ok value, but your pretty locked in once you make the step down to that price range

      1) Salah.

Robinson having a medical at fulham, could be one to watch if he comes in at 4/4.5m. Decent player for wigan whonloves going forward. Who is fulhams left back at the moment?

Odd, linked with SUFC where they have Enda and now linked with Fulham where they have Bryan

Call me crazy but I think I have a decent team AND 2.0 in the bank!

    Ryan, McCarthy
    TAA, Vinagre, Dallas, Taylor, Ferguson
    Salah, KDB, Rashford, Foden, Soucek
    Ings, Antonio, Davis

    - Going cheap on goalies, if Ramsdale goes to SHU and is 5.0, I'll take him.
    - TAA and budget guys on defence. Seems like those cheap guys can provide some serious value.
    - In the middle, one premium player from LFC, MCFC and MUFC. Foden & Soucek can bring good hauls. Pereira is an option if 6.0
    - Going cheap up top too, Ings/ Jimenez provide the best value IMO. Antonio ended strongly and I believe he can get closer to 15 goals this season.

If you have space cash get Doherty.
Avoid Fodden until sure he's nailed, last season you'd have had more points from Leo Trossard.

Ryan + Tarkowski or Pope + Taylor? Both combos are 10 mil. I can't make up my mind... Is double up on Burnley defense too much and is Taylor even nailed? Cheers!

I don't think it is too much, could be a good differential but there is Brandon Williams to consider.

Thanks, I hadn't thought of him. If he's nailed he's one to consider as well. I already have Dallas from the 4.5 defs.

If Trent doesn’t make the community shield then it could be fun. It all sounds positive enough but other players in rehab phase are in Austria. Just slightly curious anyway

My reading of the news is that Klopp expects him to miss the CS, but be fit for GW1 which is 2 weeks later. Having reduced my Mancs in expectation of them sitting out GW1, I have a spare defender to cover for one week.

Idk if this link will work but did anyone else get this crazy glitch when they first signed onto to fpl this season..?

    Jamal Lewis 11.5 defender
    Kane 5.5
    Maitland Niles a 12million goal keeper 😆

Wood's average points and average mins the last two seasons are very close, looks a great pick when he's actually fit - does he get rotated or were the missing mins injuries?

    1. Tempestic

Mostly due to injuries, occasionally he got subbed around 60mins.

    3. Ask Yourself

He’s a good pick in a Burnley shirt I just hope newcastle don’t buy him and ruin him as a decent 6.5m option

    4. Piggs Boson
      • 14 Years
      5 years, 3 months ago

Started 32 games, averaged 74.8 minutes per match.
No sign of an injury here: https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/chris-wood/verletzungen/spieler/108725

So I can only assume the 6 he missed were rotation during heavy congestion, and that he's also prone to an early substitution.

Nailed in my eyes. Not the sexiest option, but a strong one imo.

He missed some games due to minor niggles.
Wood and JayRod are the go too strikers in a 4-4-2
Barnes is playing a bit part now, Vydra might not even be there come season start.

    Ryan-button
    Taa- doherty- vinagre- Taylor-ferguson
    Auba- sterling- bruno- soucek -asm
    Werner- antonio-davis

Will look to downgrade asm to upgrade werner possibly to vardy/kun, or downgrade werner to wood and asm to ziyech depending on how friendlies for Chelsea go.
