How Barkley’s injury impacted Grealish and Watkins against Brighton

Aston Villa 1-2 Brighton

  • Goals: Ezri Konsa (£4.7m) | Danny Welbeck (£5.5m), Solly March (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Bertrand Traoré (£5.9m) | Adam Lallana (£6.2m), Pascal Groß (£5.8m)
  • Bonus points: Welbeck x3, March x2, Konsa x1

BARKLEY UP THE WRONG TREE

A second-minute muscle injury to Ross Barkley (£6.0m) proved a massive spanner in the works as Aston Villa’s key Fantasy Premier League assets blanked in Gameweek 9.

The former Everton man has enjoyed some excellent link-up play with Jack Grealish (£7.6m) this season and has arguably been a factor in his impressive form.

Removing Barkley from the picture so soon into Saturday’s meeting with Brighton restricted Grealish’s Fantasy potential and, like Dean Smith, his 40.3% ownership will be hoping for positive news in the next press conference.

“(Barkley) felt his hamstring just two minutes into the game. We’ll have to get it scanned first to see how bad it is. He seems fairly hopeful he won’t be too long but we’ll have to wait and see after this game.” – Dean Smith

Puzzlingly, right-winger Bertrand Traoré (£5.9m) was chosen as a straight-swap replacement for Barkley in the number 10 position, a role he could not quite fulfil as well as his predecessor.

The resultant effect was that Grealish eventually, swapped with Traoré, tucking into a more central station, somewhere he is less dangerous than on the left, where he can terrorise full-backs and centre-backs alike with driving, direct runs from the flanks.

Grealish also moved onto the right-hand side a lot in the second half. This shifting around of positions and lack of Barkley’s spark were never going to provide the perfect conditions for a Grealish haul, unfortunately.

Furthermore, in completely unforeseen circumstances, it turns out Traoré is above Grealish in the set-piece pecking order, despite not being a nailed-on starter at the club.

He took a large number of Villa’s corners and provided the assist for Ezri Konsa‘s (£4.7m) second-half goal from a free-kick.

It goes without saying that no Fantasy manager could have seen these events coming ahead of Gameweek 9, so the clutch who captained Grealish should not beat themselves up about that decision.

Moving forward, his owners will be hoping for one of two things. Either that Barkley will not be a long-term absentee or that Smith can find a way of consistently getting the best out of Grealish without him in the team.

DANNY BOY

Danny Welbeck in action for Brighton

Still operating firmly under the Fantasy radar, Danny Welbeck (£5.5m) is slowly becoming Brighton’s chief goal threat.

He may have only started two matches for the Seagulls, but his performances have been promising indeed.

After coming closest to scoring in the Gameweek 8 goalless draw against Burnley, Welbeck was back to lead the Brighton line for the second outing in a row, relegating Neal Maupay (£6.4m) to an attacking midfield support role alongside Adam Lallana (£6.2m).

The former Manchester United and Arsenal forward fulfilled the promise of his full debut for Brighton at Villa Park, using his exceptional pace to get in behind the defence and score the opening goal on Saturday.

Unlikely to lose his starting berth after two energetic performances, at £5.5m Welbeck could prove decent value when Brighton’s turn more appealing with a trip to Fulham in Gameweek 13.

Aston Villa XI (4-2-3-1): Martínez; Targett, Mings, Konsa, Cash; McGinn, D Luiz (Hourihane 75′); Grealish, Barkley (B Traoré 5′ | El Ghazi 74′), Trézéguet; Watkins.

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (3-4-2-1): Ryan; Webster, Dunk, White; March, Groß (Molumby 90+6′), Bissouma, Lamptey; Maupay (Burn 80′), Lallana (Veltman 46′); Welbeck.

Thing is, cheap mids aren't really a thing right now. Most mids you want are either midprice mids or premiums. Last week I would have said Barkley but now he's injured so maybe Fornals/Bowen, but it's very punty/differential.

          Anything worth a -4 if you downgrade Podence to a 4.5 ?

So I guess the main talking point about next week transfers – for most of us – will be to decide if we want either KDB or Vardy alongside Kane & Son, or if we want both instead of Kane & Son. Maybe Salah will be in the mix too if he's back.

I really, really hate any player doing any kind of a stuttered run up when they are taking a penalty.

But, now that VAR is looking for keepers coming off their line, it’s actually a very sneaky way of ensuring that if you miss, you’ll probably get another crack at the whip.

The keeper thinks the ball will be struck earlier than it is. He comes off his line, as is natural, and he’s in breach of the law.

If Bruno had missed his 2nd penalty, he’d have got another one anyway as the keeper had come off his line again.

    1. tafrère
      • 7 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

You shouldn't be able to make pauses like that while taking a pen.

        • 12 Years
        3 years, 4 months ago

        Yeah, I tend to agree.

But, it will require a re-write of the laws. And I can’t see that happening

          • 7 Years

Is there a time limit for taking a pen lol ? What if a player start dancing towards the ball for 1min until taking it lmao ?

It is legitimate and within the rules though, whereas keepers flying off their line is not but they've been getting away with it for years.

That said, if they changed the rules to say no stuttering, stopping or jumping in your run up I wouldn't mind.

    5. Gobigorgohome
      • 12 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

the keeper should not come off his line. it is in the rule book.
But there is no rule for pen taker not to jump.

I never opened a case to say Bruno did anything wrong 🙂

It's well within the laws of the game. But, it is especially SNEAKY now keepers get penalised every time for stepping off their line

    6. WE GO FOR IT
      • 8 Years

Fornals/Bowen are decent players/picks, but they tend to be substitue early most of the games. Foden is a no-go for me even though he'll probably have some game time in december. Jota is tempting if he keeps starting/scoring. But nothing really exciting in that bracket I agree.

It seems obvious to pick James - its just i cant get this nagging feeling that Azpi is there too. I think is 1st choice, but i do also think they'll be times he'll be on the bench for Azpi

Who would you pick for a 5mill def budget?
    James

Thanks mate, was going to do that and just check.
Getting a 4.5 would let me upgrade Bissouma to Soucek, so id be more happy with him at 4.9 that Bissouma tbh

So liking the 4.5mill idea alot more. Thanks Tafrere

Not much talk of Aguero on here for next GW. Obviously a bit short of fitness but should get run out in CL and big chance he'll start next GW in that mouthwatering fixture. Only £10.1m aswell..

Sat on the bench yesterday, so obviously almost ready. Not sure I remember him needing a big run in the team to get back firing and after yesterdays result, Pep won't hesitate to start him..

City's midweek UCL match will determine if they can score 3-4 goals or if they have real attacking problems. Also Pep is gonna try to nail 7-8 players in his starting lineup in order to get his team ready for the upcoming fixtures.

Is the hype of KDB (BUR) [C] GW10 as high as Bruno (WBA) [C] GW9 in the meantime Vardy (FUL)?

  21. Catastrophe

Planning transfers over the next 3 GWs, which do you prefer?

    A) Zouma, Son, Grealish
    B) Cancelo, Ziyech, Grealish (-4)
    C) Cancelo, Ziyech, Rodriguez (-4)
    D) Cancelo, Son, Grealish (-8)

Thinking D to keep Son (will be losing Kane for Salah) and to get Cancelo for City's fixture run. Vardy (FUL (c), shu) in for Kane for next two fixtures and Cancelo (BUR, FUL) in for Zouma should make up for the -8?

    Cheers

As a neutral with absolutely no dog in the PL fight I would love to see Mourinho win the league this year. Don't care one way or the other about Spurs, but always liked Jose and it would be a great comeback story after everyone had written him off.

God no. Nothing against Spurs per se... But Maureen is one of the most abrasive and ego driven men on the planet.

I've kind of enjoyed watching his ego be destroyed year on year, and watching his crumbling narcissism slowly eating away at his soul.

If that were to come to an end, it would be sad for me.

I really dont think it is. Theres a lot of cheap strikers and you can have Soucek as a playing 7th attacker in midfield which easily allows all 4.

Got 4: Bruno Kane Son Werner currently ... big decision on how to switch to one or more from KDB Vardy Salah Jesus/Kun during GW10-GW12, many scenarios ... maybe stick would be fine with small green arrows. The temptation to play the game by targeting fixtures and jump up the rank is always there ... human's greedy instinct!

    Good morning lads!

    Thoughts on this?

If Salah is still out I’m going to sell Robbo, Jrod & Kane and get Cancelo, Vardy and KDB in for -4.

I’m too scared to ignore those City fixtures. Usually they bounce back after bad performance.

    My GW10 team would be

    Martinez

    Cancelo - Chilwell - Creswell

    Bruno - KDB - Son - Grealish - Foden

    Vardy (c) - DCL

triple-up on a team thats really misfiring at the moment sounds too risky for my liking. Also, i would look at moving out foden given that he hasn't started in like 4-5 GWs now to maybe a cheap west ham mid

    Martinez
    James - Chilwell - Bellerin - Cresswell
    Salah - Sterling - Ziyech - Son
    Watkins - DCL

    Steer - Foden - Brewster - Lamptey

if there's no fire to put out, move foden out of your team and look at jota or a west ham asset. Also, I'd try to pull some funds out of defense. you have 5 very good defenders with a weak set of forwards

Keep it simple. Bring in penalty takers.

That means Fernandes, Vardy, Kane, Salah, Werner, Klich.
