Debating whether to get Salah straight back into my FPL team for Gameweek 10

After much deliberation in Gameweek 9 I finally opted to transfer Mohamed Salah (£12.2m) out of my team at 00:40 on Saturday morning. That’s the latest I’ve made a transfer all season.

Instead of opting for the obvious Bruno Fernandes (£10.8m) move, I went for the long term play and brought in Kevin De Bruyne (£11.6m) who I knew I’d want for the foreseeable.

With two free transfers it didn’t seem that risky to get rid of Salah, especially with the potential for him to miss an additional Gameweek.

As you can see below it didn’t go well.

andys-article 5

With just 50 points it undid all the hard work from the Gameweek before and saw a big red arrow.

The big question is whether to get Salah straight back in as I look at a team without Jamie Vardy (£10.2m) and wonder whether I really want to captain De Bruyne.

andys-article 6

From what Klopp has said it looks as though he’s now available and back training

“Salah trained with the team yesterday and looked really good. The test was negative so, if nothing changed since yesterday, he is available. Now we have to see what we do with that because he was quarantined until three days ago.” – Jurgen Klopp

There’s still no guarantee he’ll play against Brighton, so I’ll be heavily focused on watching the outcome of the Champions League game between Liverpool and Atalanta on Wednesday.

The ideal situation is that he plays some part in the game and comes through unscathed. Given that he had no symptons and is now back training you would think (or is it hope?) that he’ll be fine to play a Brighton side who will be down one of their key players in Tariq Lamptey (£4.8m).

The reason I’m so keen to get him straight back is simple, captaincy. I think Jamie Vardy is the best captaincy option for Gameweek 10, but Salah gives a great option, not just for this week but for many Gameweeks to come:

  • Gameweek 12 – Fulham (a)
  • Gameweek 14 – Crystal Palace (a)
  • Gameweek 15 – West Brom (h)

The rotation that I mentioned in my previous article with a Manchester City player is just too good to turn down.

It’s important not to overthink sometimes, and a fit Salah really should be in my squad.

In order to get to that point I probably have to do the unthinkable and sell one of Heung-Min Son (£9.5m) or Harry Kane (£11.0m).

I fully understand the form argument but I’m a fixtures man, and until Gameweek 16 I have no intention of captaining either of these players. That doesn’t necessarily mean they have to be sold, but I don’t have a better way of funding the moves I want to make and ultimately I’d rather own Salah than Kane…….for now.

Kane may have been explosive towards the start of the season but his highest score in the last four Gameweeks is 9 points. In fact in the last four Gameweeks he’s only had 9 shots in the box.

Twelve players have a higher non-penalty xG than Kane in the last four. In the first five Gameweeks he was third, only behind Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.8m) and Sadio Mané (£12.1m).

Kane is still being fairly consistent, but the explosiveness seems to be on a downward trend and it’s that which makes me feel I can get away with it for a few Gameweeks.

FPL Gameweek 2 team news and injury updates so far

Choosing a cheap striker to fund the Salah move is difficult. There’s still so many options to choose from, but it’s Patrick Bamford (£6.1m) that I’m considering.

I’m consistently impressed with the number of chances Leeds United create for him. In fact they’ve created a total of 98 chances so far this season which is equal with Aston Villa and just nine behind Liverpool at the top.

From those 98 chances, Bamford has already had 31 shots in the box over the entire season. No other player has had as many with Salah (26) and Kane (25) in second and third respectively.

Even if we filter out the opening Gameweeks where there were a lot of goals, and perhaps teams were getting adjusted to a new and slightly different kind of season it’s still promising for Bamford.

In the last four Gameweeks he’s had 18 shots in the box, five more than Trézéguet (£5.3m) in second. No player has a higher expected goal involvement either and he’s been involved in 80% of Leeds goals.

Ollie Watkins (£6.1m) is another option to go for as well, and he has penalties in his locker which is a big plus. However from open play there is really no competition between the two. Watkins still has a chance of making the team however as I think it’s probably time I moved on from Neal Maupay (£6.4m) who’s been stinking up my team with no returns since my Gameweek 5 Wildcard.

The only question left is who does Salah come in for. It’s between Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) and Son which will leave me with money in the bank to upgrade the other one in a few Gameweeks to Mané or Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) down the line.

I think most people would side with selling Rashford. He looked tired and rusty against West Brom, squandering a great chance from Fernandes.

However when you compare the two over the last four Gameweeks it’s quite close. Both players have only had four shots in the box, but Rashford has created six chances to Son’s two.

I also prefer Manchester United’s fixtures with Southampton (a) and West Ham (a) versus Tottenham Hotspur against Chelsea (a) and Arsenal (h).

A lot has been made about Spurs being better against stronger teams because they can play on the counter but I don’t expect either Chelsea nor Arsenal to attack them like Manchester City did. I think both games could be close.

If it was for the long term I’d probably hold Son, but if I go through with the Mané or Sterling double up then I only need them for two Gameweeks at most so Rashford might get the nod as a bit of a differential with slightly better fixtures in my book.

Lessons Learned from FPL Gameweek 9

For me yes, more consistent source of points.
Salah scoring more from open play whereas Vardy points relying heavily on pens.

              I think I'm capping KDB, but if I wasn't to cap I wouldn't do a -4 Rod's passing could catch Leeds out

Is it better to prioritise KDB and Vardy this GW? I can get Salah in GW12, Son and Vardy to Salah and Bamford

He is a great player but in terms of FPL points, he has the lowest ceiling in my midfield. He definitely will make way to either KDB or Salah.

Thanks, I'm just a little concerned of Jota game time. I can't see him playing all 4 of Salah/Mane/Firminho/Jota every week. Also no City could be a little scary, but I suppose Burnley are solid now that their defence is fit again.

Yes I kind of agree with that. Salah does look a better asset to own this but KDB probably the standout captain next week.

I don't see any of KDB or Salah rising before deadline this week but that could change quickly after a haul this weekend.

                      Hopefully not.

Brighton clearly less able defensively than Burnley who have tightened up.

So think I prefer salah this week. Although probably captain vardy...

Yup similar thinking for me. But KDB has been rested for tonight. Will be interesting to see how many minutes Salah gets tonight.

What would you do (see team below)? Transferred Salah out for Fernandes last week, now contemplating whether or not to get him back. There are a lot of ways to do this, just not sure what the best one is:
              1) Fernandes --> Salah (opposite of what I did last week)
              2) KDB --> Salah (seems extremely risky considering City's fixtures)
              3) Kane + Son (-4) --> Salah + 9.4M striker (no tempting striker options in this price bracket)
              4) Another transfer/transfers (if so, what?)
              5) Hold transfer and have 2 FT's next week

              1 FT, 1.5M ITB
              ---------------------------------- McCarthy (MUN) ----------------------------------
------------- Targett (whu) --- James (TOT) --- Mitchell (NEW) -------------
De Bruyne (BUR) --- Grealish (whu) --- Fernandes (sou) --- Son (che)
----------------- Bamford (eve) --- DCL (LEE) --- Kane (che) -----------------
              BENCH:
Forster (MUN) --- Podence (ars) --- Kilman (ars) --- Lamptey (LIV)

No. Salah was handed the ball by Milner in their last CL game. Milner was supposed to take that as he is the first choice.

Liverpool's penalty taker does not depend on my FPL choices, so not sure how that's relevant anyway.

Aguero is just what City need to find their goalscoring form again - Pep will be frustrated and he'll start against Burnley. Always an injury risk but he'll always mre often than not provide a return when he does play

I can’t. Haven’t kept a record. Doesn’t take away from the fact that there were plenty of very qualified people who couldn’t say for certain either way.
And in fact, some players had 2 FTS saved for the IB so using 1 on him to get 22 points was a transfer or two well used.

if you had 2FTs and had to use 1 with no other issues, i get it, i also get the WC move, but to use a transfer last week and a transfer this week to bring him back, seems like the jammy penalty is a good excuse to paper over the cracks

yes, but you still need to test negative, which there is no guarantee for. people test positive for weeks.

If On WC, May have gotten +0.2 in team value if went from Salah to Bruno for E.g., with a +22 point upturn, so may not be so mental..

if on WC i can see the reasons to do it, but using a FT and then wanting him back the next GW, using another FT, i dont see the logic at all

                        1) bruno had the best fixture and upside before the match.
                        2) you mean super unlucky to just get a goal and not more. If not stop embarrassing yourself
                        3) where was your maths when havertz wasn't fit to play this last week despite it being more than 14 days?

What's lucky about a return from a form player, on pens, against one of the worst defences in the league?
I kept Salah and think that was the prudent move, but your comments are way OTT.

Well Bruno’s haul was kinda lucky imo, he got points from a pen, ManU have been whack at home and wbrom typically tight at the back.
Maybe luck isn’t the word, but the odds were not in his favour. He was a bad captain pick imo based on all the above

I’ve only got in Bruno because how incredibly lucky he and Utd are. It’s been like that for the whole year.

Bruno is a great pick, no ones denying that and I wish I had him for his next two. Just I wouldn’t have capped last week based on my previous comments

                            Sorry to labour the point...
                            - Utd get loads of pens and Bruno takes them, so nothing lucky about him scoring a pen.
                            - Yes Utd have done worse at home, but two of their four home games before WBA were against Chelsea and Spurs so home/away is not a valid comparison at this stage
                            - West Brom were bottom 5 for BC conceded in the four games leading up to Utd. Wouldn't call that 'tight'

Ok not tight but I wouldn’t say bad, conceded 5 in their last 5. And at least one was a pen, maybe more idk. ManU winning like 3-0 or 4-0 was unlikely, I prefer to captain a player who has the potential of multiple attacking returns in a game and to me, Bruno did not fit that narrative vs Brom.
Hence why I figured DCL vs Fulham was the best captain pick and gained 6 points on Bruno cappers

I agree DCL was just as good a choice. It was a coin toss for me but my expectation of a massive EO for Bruno swung it. If not for that I might have gone DCL too.
To be pedantic - you gained two points on Bruno cappers 🙂

Should say that, with hindsight, Bruno's EO wasn't much bigger than DCL in the higher tiers so I called that wrong

I had no intention of taking him out, partly as I was already on a -4, and secondly because getting salah back in is always a pain in the ass and you typically spend the cash or he even rises in price first time he performs again.
Couldn’t be bothered with the hassle, I just played Bissouma instead which didn’t pay off, but I didn’t have a bad week regardless. 64 points in the end so it was ok

Plus salah is my captain vs Brighton, haven’t really got any other stand out candidate bar DCL

Mane got covid before the IB and missed Villa BEFORE the IB then had the entire IB to recover in Liverpool and was back for the next game.

Salah got it towards the end of the first week of the IB. smh

                    Salah situation was unknown.
It was total speculation either way that he would only miss one game. There were no guarantees that he would test negative, there have been examples either way of quickly testing negative & returning or keep testing positive & remaining out.
£12+m is a significant amount to have sitting on the bench.
Bruno was the most popular Captain pick & transfer in.
I can see arguments on both sides, I think the situation with a manager's individual team, Andy had 2FTs, no other pressing issues. "IF" Salah was out for 2 to 3 games & continued dropping in price it would have been a great decision.
Respectfully to say it's just simple maths (10 days) isn't accurate when it was unknown.
Assuming he does play at the weekend, then your opinion (which has hindsight now he's tested negative & Klopp confirmed he looked good in training) looks like the right call but no one knew that prior to the last deadline.

I responded to a stupid question a week or so sack asking "If Salah is out for 2 weeks would you sell him?"

My answer, which has turned out as reality, is that there was absolutely no guarantee that Salah would miss just 1 GW, or 2 GWs, or more - until AFTER the deadline (or Brighton game).

If you sold Salah (myself included I might add) - then you did it not knowing the length of time he'd definitely be out.

Missing only 1 GW was absolutely possible, by there was no way to know ahead of time.

before he flew to England on Friday he had four consecutive positive tests, so it was actually more likely that he would miss the game using ur simple maths logic.
In any case it was a calculated risk as we would only know for sure after deadline either way.

Lets see whats the point difference between the two from GW9-GW11 (coz most are likely to get salah back for GW12 game against fulham)
till then this is all conjecture & each group wishing their player outscores the other.

i have both Salah & Bruno, i got Bruno this GW before the Salah news, Salah getting covid actually screwed me because it enabled everyone to get Bruno and then bag them lucky points

I took Salah out and got Bruno and captained him instead of having Anguisa off my bench. Does that make me 'mental'? I'm glad I did it even if I bring him back for a hit I'm up on points.

There is a few of the /anyone who has a different opinion than me is mental/wrong/stupid' brigade out this afternoon isn't there

As a West Brom fam I would have been delighted. We are awful though and before hindsight having Fernandes v West Brom C over anguissa with a free transfer was a good move, obviously there is always the chance it doesn’t work out on the given week. Not everyone’s team is the same as yours and what might be ‘mental’ in your situation might not in be in someone else’s.

Arguments either way are valid I guess. Not as clear cut as you're making out though.

There was the issue that Salah's training during that period would've been sub optimal too as well as the other reasons mentioned.

Most managers required a captain option last game week and chose to keep Son and lose Salah for that purpose.

That's a big positive swing in points.

Can't deny that many would now like him back but even then we need to see how the Euro game pan out.

                  A - Saiss to Cancello

                  A) Jimi -> Bamford, then JRod -> Salah next gw

                  B) Jimi -> DCL, gw11 JRod -> Ziyech, gw12 Bruno -> Salah

                    I think A.
With B you back yourself into a corner if Bruno continues hauling but is also your only route to Salah

                  McCarthy
                  Zouma - Robbo - Dallas
                  Grealish - Bruno - Salah - Foden
                  Adams - Kane - DCL
                  [Soucek - KWP* - Branthwaite]
                  2 FT; £1.8m

Current plan is KWP > Dias (bench Dallas) and leave it there for now. Any thoughts?
Could also do Kane > Vardy. I've decided not to jump on City attack until they hit form though - happy to miss the first haul.

                      WC active:

                      Martinez
                      Robertson | Ayling | Dallas
                      Salah | Fernandes | Grealish | Foden
                      Vardy | DCL | Bamford

                      Button | Kilman | Riedewald | Ferguson

Money in the bank for Foden & Vardy > KDB & Watkins. Vardy for captain though this week and Foden likely to start.

Had Coufal for the last 2 and he did me well. Just don't like their upcoming run.

I'm a Leeds fan so probably bias but Dallas & Ayling are both so attacking and we have proven we can keep clean sheets. Just feel there is so much value with the double up and tbh I'm struggeling to pick the better choice.

                      have exact funds for either
                      -- Saiss + Barnes >> Balbuena + KDB (-4).
                      -- Saiss + Barnes >> Masauku + Sterling (-4)

but with Saiss dropping in price tonight, worth doing any these transfers today?

If i delay, my options then become either Lewis/KDB or Balbuena/Sterling
