FPL Masterclass: Our panel’s top tips for Fantasy Premier League beginners

Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with round-table Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to their methodical process for captaincy selection.

We’re delighted that all three of these elite managers will also be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season, with Tom additionally now on board as Deputy Editor.

Only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in 2021/22; full-year memberships are now available for £20.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

We begin with general advice for FPL managers ahead of the upcoming campaign, particularly those who are relatively new to the game – although there are plenty of helpful takeaways for the rest of us, too.

Fantasy newcomers can also read up on the basics in our ‘how to play’ guide here.

Tom said…

Giving yourself plenty of time to make decisions is so important in FPL. For example, knee-jerking your £6.5m forward out after he blanks on a Saturday night may not be the smartest move, especially if he has good fixtures to follow. Sleeping on a decision doesn’t necessarily lead to a better outcome but I find it helps, and remember, the player who scored big in the previous Gameweek won’t necessarily do the same in the next.

I’d also suggest building a basic set of custom tables in the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area or use the existing templates if you don’t feel comfortable with that. I always use statistics to back up what I’m seeing on the pitch and this is an easy way of collating all that information in one place. However, the Season Ticker is perhaps the most important tool of all, as you can use it to plan future transfers and captain picks. Captaincy is one of the most important aspects of the game, so ensuring you have a good premium option each week is key.

I also like to spend a bit of time in pre-season researching the newly-promoted clubs. Here you’ll often find under-priced gems like John Lundstram and Patrick Bamford, who started out at £4.0m and £5.5m respectively. In the former’s case, you even got a midfielder who was classified as a defender! Maybe you don’t plan on starting with anyone from Norwich City, Watford or Brentford next season, but get that knowledge in place now, so you’re ready to move quickly once the season kicks off.

Finally, if you have a bad start and find yourself chasing, don’t panic. And if you’re still struggling heading into the final stretch, use calculated gambles rather than going all-in on differentials.

Zophar said…

Fantasy Premier League is, in my opinion, first and foremost a game of patience. It might sound off-putting as a new player but it’s what I’ve learnt over the years. It’s always tempting to be on the lookout for a shiny new toy or the player who banged in a hat-trick in the previous Gameweek but you have to remember that the points from last week are already gone and it’s not necessarily going to happen again in the future.

Faith in the players you pick is important: you picked them for a reason, they’re not going to score or assist every week and swapping them around means you end up chasing last week’s points.

You need to pick players for a longer period than one or two Gameweeks as transfers are precious. ‘Minus four’ for every hit is a lot of points and taking a hit every other week is definitely going to have a detrimental effect on your overall rank.

Fantasy Football Scout’s Season Ticker is one of the most useful tools around as it can rank which club have the best fixture run for a specified period and allows you to plan ahead for when to hop on or hop off a team’s assets. This allows you to plan your transfers in a structured manner rather than make kneejerk decisions.

Lateriser said…

My first suggestion to Fantasy Premier League rookies would be to point them in the direction of the Season Ticker in the Premium Members Area. Have a look at this tool, sort it for six to eight Gameweeks and plan your team for the mid-term.

Make sure that while constructing your team, you have short-term punts only in one to two positions at the most and have at least two premium players in your team. One mistake rookies often make is going for non-premium players as a captain too often. Do this only once in a while and stick to the premium players playing against bottom-half teams as much as possible.

If you can, look at the ‘captainable’ fixtures for the first six to eight Gameweeks and try covering the big hitters from those teams. What happens to me generally is that when I’m looking at the Season Ticker, the loose structure of my squad drops up in my head. Always have the Season Ticker open in another tab when you are building your team.

Other than that, my other pieces of advice would be that during pre-season, don’t spend your time over-tinkering. Once you are aware of all price points, you are more or less familiar with what kind of a team is possible.

Focus more on gathering information. Try finding out which defences were good last season and which attackers underperformed while paying close attention to manager quotes to give you an idea of player roles at the start of the campaign.

Only in the last seven days before the season starts is when you seriously tinker with your team because at that point, you will have gathered as much information as possible.

Don’t try to imitate any manager’s FPL style while you’re consuming content. Do your own research and over time, you will find your own approach which will be in sync with your temperament and risk appetite.

And most importantly, don’t forget to enjoy the game. Never forget that we are playing it for fun!

    Henderson
    TAA AWB Digne
    Salah Bruno Barnes Raphina
    Antonio Toney Watkins
    (Foster, Ayling, Gilmour, Manquillo)

Anyone a fan of this? Like the idea of a Barnes punt if it’s looking like he’ll play.

If Barnes is going to start, he’s not really a punt he’s a good pick

Do you prefer AWB over Shaw or just not expecting Shaw to play GW1? I switched to AWB today myself. Happy to go back to Shaw is he looks ready and raring but there's no need for Ole to rush him with an able deputy in Telles.

I've been on Shaw from the start and dropped him yesterday on news of his injury. I didn't switch to AWB as he lacks attacking intent. I've gone with Digne (who Dazz already has) - then realised that I can bench him GW2 v Leeds and he's good for a few GWs.

I also already have Digne. Who would be your 5.5 defender of choice other than him?

How many seagulls do you have? I fancy Dunk to nut in a goal in those early fixtures - 5.0. If you're strictly 5.5 Stones, then Castagne.

Sanchez + Lamptey so no Dunk for me.

Bit worried about Stones' minutes at the start of the season having gone to the final of the Euros.

Castagne is an interesting one. Great attacking threat but Leicester flatter to deceive defensively at times.

Think I prefer AWB and Cresswell to those two.

Well then I reckon even Slabhead is better for goals and baps than WAB. Watch out for Trippier news too.

                  Last season.

WAB - 6.1 minutes per BPS
Maguire - 6.9 mins per BPS

expected Goal Involvement was almost identical - with WAB from assists and Maguire from goals.

All from the stats section here.

Sure, but that's looking to the past. With Varane partnering him, Mags will push higher up, allowing him to thread the odd throughball to assist a goal, and his confidence and ability in heading in at corners is progressing. I don't see any real signs of progress in AWB's game, and his place might be threatened by Trippier.

I don't have any of them mind, only had Shaw, and I'm looking mostly at Hendo for 5.0 now Ole's stated he's nailed the gloves. For the rest, I'm biding my time re pre-season developments.

Hendo or Dr Gea is 5.0. clean sheet for M.U is not so much. Maybe can improve if Varane really sign.

The issue is, how many save will he make ? Can no1 GK makes a lot save too?

GK have high points no just grom CS, but saves the ball too.

Is Hendo really have that value for FPL?

Fair enough. I don’t have much of an opinion either way was just interested in how last year was.

I think whether MU get a decent DM will make a big difference too. That would free him up to push up more than his CB pair for me.

My updated "If Grealish and Kane Go to City" Team.

Wanted to have Mahrez, since packing the midfield seems to make sense to share the starts (guarantee more minutes each week), but downgraded to Cancelo, essentially. Actually, I did

    Reguilon + Shaw + Mahrez + Watkins > Cancelo + Trent + Jota + Toney + 0.5

    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo Tierney
    Torres Foden Grealish Jota ESR
    Kane Cavani

Steele | Lamptey Toney Ayling | 0.5 ITB

Plenty of bench cover for the City boys and Jota (well, as much as possible), with ESR dropping to the bench in GW2&3 for Toney. Then we'll see what happens.

Unlikely to happen. But I'll likely stick with it (or whatever I have at the time) if they do move to City before GW1.

Would really like Watkins, but he doesn't fit this concept, since I wouldn't be able to sell after 3 GWs with 5 City players, so would have to bench, and that's 7.5m on the bench for quite a few games potentially.

Tierney can also be benched, potentially, for GW2&3 for Lamptey/Ayling.

Not sure why I'm telling you all this. Fun!

It's good but I'm kinda confused. You say it's Kane and grealish at city team, which would make 5 city players in your team?

You can do that. If a player is in your squad and they change PL clubs, you can keep them in your squad, but they must be your first transfer out.

No flexibility in a formation week to week. Starters look set. Will not get much out of Oba at all (Ings/Adams). If Maddison moves to Arse, may not work with ESR. Would drop either TAA or Robbo/ can still get a quality D, and strengthen 3rd Forward.

        Rayan Ait Nouri

I hope so, our new manager is keen on attacking fullbacks.
Marcal played LB in our first preseason game, but RAN played LM (due to no Podence, Neto or Traore).
One to watch when everybody comes back to training but definitely in my team for now.

My comment wads on Ait Nouri. Hoever has far less chance of playing. not no chance though, at the moment. But we're not sure what formation Lage will go with, and there are probably further transfers both in and out of Wolves' defence to have any certainty.

Morning, know its way too early to set a team but any feed back on my current thinking really welcome-

    Sanchez
    Forfana TAA* Shaw
    Salah* Buendia Raphina* Fernades*
    Toney DCL* Watkins*
    4.0* White* Gilmour* 4.0def *
    1.5M ITB

Thoughts- * players (or priced players on the bench) think im set on
Buendia to Grealish if looks like playing (all the money)
    Wilson over Toney (0.5 left)
Sanchez to Henderson if looks like playing (1M left, might replace Shaw)
Forfana to Dias (all the money)
    Forana to Digne (0.5lrft)
I like all the cash on pitch to start with, happy with the prices of bench player, White could be Lampty if doesnt move.

Anything obvious im missing or thoughts on my thoughts really welcome

I'd upgrade your 4.0 to a 4.5 and up unless one establishes themselves in a first team. Prefer the security especially at the start of the season.
8.0 for a Villa player seems expensive even if it's Grealish, I'm going for Watkins but only just.
Wilson is a transfer waiting to happen, too injury prone. Missed 10 of the last 15 games last season.
Sanchez & Shaw over Henderson and Lamptey.

United triple up doesn't seem the best, Greenwood probably one to go.
Shouldn't be playing 4 at the back with those picks either.
Downgrade Keane to a 4.5, play Toney or upgrade him, play 3 at the back and upgrade Greenwood to Havertz for example, free pick here.

If Grealish stays at Villa and with Buendia whom he might be mostly rotated?

    A. Grealish 8.0
    B. Traore 6.0
    C. EL Ghazi 6.0

Grealish won't be rotated, i'm not sure where Buendia is going to play, if its out wide then i suspect he will get rotated a lot for sure as Traore & El Ghazi are too good to be left rot permanently on the bench, if its as a number 10 he should be mostly safe

Watkins #1, best option by far right now IMO - 90 every game, wat NEW BRE, .51 npxG+xA/90

Antonio #2 - .62 npXG+xA/90, new CRY sou first 4, EL starts GW5 so reduced injury risk

#3 can be anyone but I'm on Wilson - pens, plays 90, talisman, decent fixtures and Newcastle looked improved offensively under the new coach, with Wilson benefitting by smashing Leicester.

      1. Gabbiadini

This is very similar to my thoughts.
Wilson I probably have #2 behind Watkins. Do you see value in Toney, i.e. is it worth saving 1.0 over one of the 7.5s?

          • 3 Years
          2 years, 9 months ago

It depends on what the extra 1M gets you, for me the 7.5s are proven, have better fixtures, known quantities so I prefer them if I can get to them - but that's not always possible, in which case Toney is fine.

The 1.0 would go on the 3rd-5th defender. 5.0/4.5/4.5 or 5.5/4.5/4.0.
            x3 7.5 forwards would be a 4.5/4.5/4.0 3rd-5th defender option.

Iheanacho getting a lot of love. I just worry about his minutes with the return of Barnes and the signing of Daka. I expect him to start games but could see him being subbed quite a bit.

I expect Daka to be eased in, and at the expense of Vardy. I think Nacho will start regularly so long as he keeps scoring like the second half of last season. Like Cavani, i'm not thinking of him as a season-keeper, just to make an impact in the first few GWs.

Richarlison has the highest ceiling of all of them, I think. Obviously it depends on the Olympics at the beginning but he's usually good for 165ish a season

Over a season? Not sure, but in any given GW, I think not. How often has Rich ever scored more than one goal a game or got a double-figure haul? It's not his style.

He will likely end of being Evertons penalty taker this season. He has often suffered due to how he's utilised but he's definitely got another level to go, and has previously reached 165 and 153 in the 2 seasons before last, even when Everton weren't particularly good going forward. Wilson has only acheived those numbers once and Antonio has never got close. Watkins looks prime I must say, so him and Rich are my picks for the season, yeah. Injury permitting they'll be the highest scoring 7.5 mil players

I have been thinking about Rudiger since the last game i saw with him. Cant remember if it was CL or Premier. He has an amazing top level.

    Sánchez (Foster)

Salah - Fernandes - Jota (Brownhill - Gilmour)
    DCL - Watkins - Antonio

if Shaw is out for GW 1
Shaw Fofana Jota to Robertson Manquillo Raphinha

    Sánchez (Foster)
TAA - Robertson - Digne - Lamptey (Manquillo)

Very template yeh, and not dissimilar to mine. I'd just be worried at the bench. Manq won't play much, so you're left with a pair of 2-pointer mids only. That's okay if Jota in draft one gets enough gametime; problematic for cover if he or anyone else doesn't.

I know it’s rock n roll looking, but the axis of Cancelo, Castagne, Havertz, Torres, Jota, Greenwood, Cavani that midfield could feasibly get less than 5 points between them all for GW1

Take Man Utd for example - nothing to stop Ole lining up per below for Leeds

      Martial
      Pogba, Bruno, Sancho
      McTom, Fred/Matic/VDB

Leicester now have Castagne, Periera, Thomas, Bertrand & Justin fullbacks

City have 4x fullbacks, and Torres is in a pool of 5x players for 3 positions

Under Tuchel Havertz has been benched 12 times out of 19 in the league, has started 11 of the last 20 in all comps under him, and has 4 premier league returns in total under Tuchel

I suppose you'd have to reference the goals he banged in for Swansea a long long time ago.
The Arsenal link is interesting; there's rumours of moving on both Lacazette and Nketiah. It would leave Arsenal with Auba and Martunelli, neither of whom play well centrally, so there would be a clear vacancy for Tammy there.

I really like this draft. Two cap options, attacking full backs at the back. Bench is shoddy but I think its workeable if I can get more assurances Obafemi or another 4.5/5.0 is a decent option for at least regular off the bench cameos. And money in the bank as well.
