Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them, they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with regular Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to captaincy picks.

Our trio of top managers will be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season – and only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in full.

You can read all of their previous FPL Masterclass articles via the links above but this time we’ll be asking our panel: what do you focus more on – form or fixtures?

ZOPHAR SAID…

I am a ‘fixtures over form’ guy and I believe that a run of favourable matches often ‘creates’ form.

When a team/player encounters favourable opposition, they are afforded more opportunities to deliver points, which in turn leads to increased confidence and an upturn in form. This makes sense, as most sides often place greater emphasis on winning a fixture against, say, a Norwich City than they do a Manchester City. You would see more attacking set-ups from managers and players would also feel mentally that they are more likely to find the back of the net.

Very often, teams from the bottom half of the table rely solely on the ‘easy’ fixtures for their Premier League survival so we in turn as FPL managers need to target these games, too. I usually look for a block of five to six fixtures when I make my transfers.

However, I don’t think fixtures are as important for the premium assets, as they can deliver points usually against any opposition. My strategy with the premiums is usually to stick and forget, and ride out the tougher periods.

There are some instances, though, where form simply cannot be ignored. I did a piece for Scout last year where I tried to define ‘form’ and the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.5m) and Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) exemplified this in the tail-end of the campaign. Previously bit-part players, they had been afforded the chance to shine and circumstances led to them having an ideal state of mind to deliver a high level of performance which, though unsustainable over a long period, was ideal for FPL managers to capitalise on in the short term.

LATERISER SAID…

I am definitely a fixtures guy. I’ve always thought that fixtures breed form as premium assets from strong teams will more often than not tend to do well versus weaker opposition.

I’ve done many articles highlighting the same where the performance of premium assets versus strong, middling and obliging defenses is starkly different. You can see the same in the data here.

While selecting my team, I like getting premium assets even if they have a good fixture run for three to four Gameweeks, whereas my approach is a lot more long-term when it comes to mid-priced attackers and defenders. I generally see these mid-priced assets and defenders as long-term ‘value’-focused glue guys and I like to spend my transfers on attackers with a high upside.

Again, this is very subjective and depends on the context of the season (you can’t spend transfers on premium attackers if they are continuously performing at a very high level) and you’ll need to take a step back and assess.

Form, for me, is a little less predictable than fixtures but there is a case for trusting a player looking slightly more confident or avoiding a player who appears the opposite. On this note, one thing to look out for is whether there is a ‘role change’ for a player in a particular team. You need to keep an eye out for these tactical shifts and try jumping onto these players earlier than the crowd.

TOM SAID…

I’m all about the fixtures, especially for my budget and mid-price picks, and often find that form is driven by it.

Bad defences can suddenly become good defences if the fixtures fall kindly, which is exactly what happened with West Bromwich Albion for a period last season. The Baggies were terrible initially under Sam Allardyce, which coincided with a brutal schedule that included games against Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Leeds United and Arsenal. However, they improved shortly afterwards once the fixtures eased, keeping a respectable four clean sheets in seven matches. That’s something I benefitted from with Sam Johnstone and Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£5.5m) in my team but I was quick to sell once the fixtures stiffened again.

Despite that, sometimes you need to ride the wave with players like Jesse Lingard. The form isn’t necessarily sustainable and returns are bound to dry up eventually, but missing out on these types of players isn’t a lot of fun, and at the very least, you should make a few pounds from it.

With the premiums, I don’t mind playing them in trickier one-off fixtures, especially if they are on penalty-taking or set-piece duties. For example, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) returned against Man City, Man Utd, Leicester City, Spurs and Arsenal last season, so there was never a reason to sell.

The TAA resurgence in FPL was from around GW28 no?

In that time another Liverpool player had a minor comeback. Mane actually had more returns than Mo in the run from 28 to 38. This is slightly retrospective thinking as the 38 brace makes it seem much better than it was at the time.

That said I think I'm right in saying TAA and Mane are the traditional combo and there is some logic anyway in the two of them helping each other back to FPL form.

It makes sense that if the RB is doing well there should be more opportunities falling to the LW and vice versa.

I think we talked about it in the spring. TAA has that long, curved cross to the far post, where Mane is waiting, and he probably has the best aerial ability from all the mids. It's really sad that difference between Salah and Mane is just 0.5, penalties are surely more than enough for that.

Yep - sorely overpriced on form

I could just take a swing at it early on with the big double up in midfield. I have Bruno in there partly as a placeholder in any case and if it's good Mane again then with Bruno's new price point I could take a short term gamble yet. I'm expecting to juggle funds anyway around week 3

I think owning City assets for the first 3 gameweeks could be a huge differential, their highest % owned players are Dias on 26.8% and KDB on 14.7.

I'm really fancying one of Mahrez or Gundogan to start the season alongside Dias.

Is it worth the headache or do you see it as a gamble that could pay off?

    1. Gabbiadini

I quite like Mahrez, but Grealish signing adds to the rotation headache.

I have Mahrez + Cancelo at the moment. Mahrez only for 2 GWs, I will move him to Son. Eventually the plan is to have KDB for the whole season. Not sure about his fitness atm.

Depends on how you feel about risk. High risk, high reward. Your players could also get benched and destroy your game week and mental well-being.

    4. G00LI0
      • 8 Years
      4 years, 4 months ago

I am avoiding. Very unclear how they will line up. As much as I like Grealish, Kane and Mahrez as fantasy assets, the rotation will be a headache.

Sterling, Grealish, Foden, Gundo, Torres, Mahrez and Silva all competing. Pick the right one and yes, you will do good. But you will never always have the right one

The only City mid I will have once fit is KDB

        • 4 Years

Lots of competition but less so at the beginning of the season because Sterling/Foden will be less involved due to the Euros.
Mahrez is s banker differential imo.

Agree on short term Mahrez pick. I prefer to pick a player with long term potential.

I'm avoiding City until we see how they are lining up and things settle. Mahrez may still not play regularly in the short term... Its pep

I kinda feel like semi-short-term is the way to go (hqve mahrez, considering cancelo). If you drop them in for 1-2 games you might be disappointed; 6 weeks or so (with subs to cover maybe 2 benchings) looks better to me.

Carlton Cole, speaking on talkSPORT, said: "I almost joined Spurs. I went and did my medical and everything.

“Roman Abramovich found out and he said ‘you've got to come back, you’re not joining them’.

“He said ‘you can’t go to Spurs, I don’t do business with them’."

Chelsea fan here. Not really. Whilst we would no doubt obviously take him, Spurs just simply won't sell to us. They never do.

On a personal level I am not sure that Kane's recent tendency to drop very deep to supply chances for runners really suits what we need either. We create SO many chances and. That's not what we need our CF doing.

We need a bully in the box who can be lethal, and that's exactly what Lukaku is. Not to say Kane isn't either of those things necessarily - but I think Lukaku -could- complement us better.

Lukaku is also a Chelsea boy, knows & loves the club. Still cheaper than Kane.

      I get it.

Now Grealish has signed for 100m to City, would they still be willing to pay out a further 150m for Kane?

But I can’t see how Kane can comfortably stay with a team he’s been so disrespectful to and clearly forcing a move away from. Why on earth sign a 6 year contract in the first place?

I would imagine Spurs would not want Kane to go to Chelsea because of bad relations between the two rival clubs.

I do hope he gets a proportionally heavy fine before he leaves though.

They would be nowhere without his G & A last year.
All he has to do is turn up & train, he could in fact just jog round the pitch on match days making Spurs a 10 man team?

Guess grealish signing muddies mahrez waters too

Bruno to Kane swap? You can't have all three, at least I don't think so.

Which players would you be most worried about starting the season without?? For me its TAA Digne Salah Bruno Watkins.

Son, if he goes off it’ll mean I’ll have to sell Bruno or completely re jig my team to get to him

Digne is a let down every year. Always underdelivers. Will happily go without him all season

      Fixture proof, nailed,
will get loads of CS this season, attacking threat, bargain at 6.0. Almost certainly in my team but not 100% sure he'll play GW1.

Built a team I'm relatively happy with for now... have a few question marks I'd appreciate your views on:

A - Sanchez (GK): Murmurs that he's injured? With Ben White sold, Lamptey injured and Dunk needing an operation... is he still the set-and-forget £4.5m option of choice?
B - Fofana (DEF) - Given Evans' foot injury, is he nailed to start the season? Seems a great pick if so.

I like Bachmann, with Foster 4.0 second choice.

      A) Sanches picked up a knock during the first half of a recent friendly but played on until half time where he was taken off along with some other pre-some subs. He is almost certainly fine but we should know more if there is a problem next week.

      B) Fofana almost certainly starts now that Evans is out. When Evans returns Leicester can even switch to a back three so both can be accomodated with Soyuncu.

Relevant that Norwich Liverpool is an away fixture?

There is that recent record of Liverpool tonking (or at least scoring freely against) newly promoted sides week 1 but those fixtures were at Anfield - a fairly intimidating stadium.

It's a potential mismatch for sure but Norwich are not newbies this time and will be on home territory and are much less gungho in approach. The other mismatch I see and almost prefer is Palace away to Chelsea with unsettled defence and wholly new system of playing which seems ripe for a goal deluge.

Mo looks the most logical captain but an each way bet on Havertz as VC worth considering imo though Lukaku could knock that out of the park looking for minutes oop after week 1. Palace settled status outweighed by managerial change and away fixture?

Yup Chelsea Palace is what I have my eye on too but only as VC, Salah Vs promoted team had to be C

Norwich are Norwich and Salah is Salah. Anything else is overthinking for me. Salah (C)

I'm on Salah (c) and Havertz (vc), but there's no way Salah doesn't play, so it's kinda moot.

          🙂

The VC thing is of course tokenism.

Still to tweak side but one way or another I want to give myself a shot of going big early. Popping Havertz in is probably enough - no need to captain. I'm also -and this a new thought for me - now actively contemplating early Mane over Bruno (see post above about TAA and Mane). That would leave me nicely left field but close enough to template to feel rational.

My current side is too dull to run with for my taste.

I'm settled now apart from the big question - to Trent or not to Trent. Sliding towards Jota....

FWIW I'll be on TAA almost certainly

Bit of a safety first call on my part - not a signed up member of the 200 plus club! More than anything going with him allows the double up without WC

        Hey Pingu,
I’m working on a FPL project for the coming season and thought you’d be a good addition.
        Drop me an email if you’re interested;

City is such a merrygoround. Only really got success last season with Gundogan, KDB and Dias. Anyone else is just a flamin lottery! If Kane moved he would be a slam dunk mind.
