With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) days away, we’re welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors for the new campaign.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is two-time Indian FPL champion Lateriser, who offers some tips ahead of 2022/23. You can read his Gameweek 1 team draft here.

How the unlimited World Cup transfers have changed Lateriser's strategy

Before the new season started, I wanted to write about a few macro/generic things that are on my mind. These are just some overview thoughts that I have had and have generally served me well.

DON’T SPREAD FUNDS TOO MUCH

I think it’s advisable not to spread your Fantasy Premier League funds too much. Try compressing as much money as possible into 11-12 players. I think this can be achieved quite comfortably because the likes of Andreas Pereira (£4.5m) and Neco Williams (£4.0m) are perfectly playable bottom-price options that can mostly sit on your bench.

This should make it easier/take fewer transfers to get to players you like or want and I’ve found it’s always better to focus your transfers and cash on the pitch. Our benches may be of less worth than usual due to the impact of the five-sub rule because the likelihood of your player coming on in a real-life game increases – and hence the chances of you needing your FPL bench decreases.

OPPORTUNITIES TO DEVIATE FROM THE ‘TEMPLATE’ – BUT NOT SALAH

I also strongly believe that this season there are a lot more good FPL options than in previous years. A lot of perceived top-half teams have strengthened, there are a bunch of decent enablers and the ‘viable’ player pool at least seems considerably larger than in previous years.

Keeping these things in mind, I want to hammer home the fact that this year, in particular, there are many ways to skin the FPL cat. If you see a couple of players that you like that aren’t a part of the template, back yourself. There is always going to be enough FPL opportunity this season. I personally never enjoy playing this game too much if I’m not backing myself.

That said, think very carefully if you’re considering going without Mohamed Salah (£13.0m). Simply put, he’s the best pick in the game – in my eyes, anyway – irrespective of ‘effective ownership’ (EO). He looked really sharp in the Community Shield and is a 90-minute man that is on penalties in arguably the most potent attack in the country. If you want to go off him, do it when you’ve seen enough of a downtrend. Gameweek 1 is not the time to do that, in my humble opinion; I did it once and it absolutely derailed my season. My wounds are fresh, which is why I feel the need to reiterate this. But you know, outside of that, play your own game…!

EVERY SEASON IS DIFFERENT

Assume that we know nothing. Every year in FPL is unique in its own way and having preconceived notions carried forward into this year generally doesn’t help.

One of the biggest mistakes I’ve seen FPL managers make is assuming causation equals correlation. This isn’t always the case. For example, a few years ago, many people were against getting Danny Ings into their team because he was injury prone. Because of this, they missed out on an asset who was, at that time, just £6.0m. A lot of people refrained from buying him even when he was a sure thing because of preconceived notions that they carried forward.

Even carrying forward previous ‘bad’ experiences with FPL picks isn’t a healthy habit. Give everyone a clean slate because Fantasy Premier League is a very dynamic game and roles are constantly changing for players.

READ THE ROOM

When the season starts, a lot of us just get into the rhythm of ‘get rid of bad player’ and ‘get good player’ without thinking too much about strategy. Try taking a step back for a second and think macro. Consider which positions you want to spend your transfers on, which positions are going to be glue positions and who are the potential future targets. Think of how long-term or short-term you want to play with your Gameweek 1 team and build your squad accordingly.

Once about three Gameweeks have passed, think macro again: look at fixture shifts and try assuming when you want to play your Wildcard. As mentioned previously, we’re all getting free transfers between Gameweek 16 and 17 anyway so you don’t need to think beyond that.

READ MORE: What’s new in FPL for 2022/23: Unlimited transfers

Because of the short-term nature of the first half of the season, we’ll need to think from the ‘helicopter view’ – as my fellow Pro Pundit Pras likes to call it – a lot more. Identifying potential fixture swings and Wildcard opportunities might help.

USEFUL TOOL: Filter clubs by fixture difficulty using our Season Ticker

One thing in my head is that because of the number of players we will have in our teams due to the pricing, our threshold to Wildcard shouldn’t be super-high. We will always have a ‘good enough’ team with a bunch of assets from Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal. So I reckon maybe wanting to make four or five changes in your starting XI is enough for a first Wildcard.

That’s enough macro tips from me for now. I’ll be with you all season out here, anyway. Make sure you enjoy the season and I wish you the best of luck for 2022/23!

Hi guys, I am quite settled now on my team, but just a few quandary’s still to decide upon, so be good to get some input on the decisions below:

    Team as it stands is:

    Mendy
    Robertson - Trippier - Cancelo - TAA
    Saka - Salah - Martinelli - Bailey
    Kane - Jesus
    ________________________________
    Ward: Neco, Andreas, Archer

    A) Would you downgrade Robertson or Cancelo to a 5.0 DEF like Walker for example, and upgrade Martinelli to an 8m MID in the likes of Diaz/Maddison?

    B) Downgrade Robertson to James and use the 1m elsewhere? Again to maybe improve the keeper or elsewhere?

Things seem to be pinned on what I do with Robertson, but maybe I should jsit follow my gut and stick to what I believe in here and keep all as is haha!

    Cheers guys.

I really want James due to FOMO but went with Mount/Robbo instead. Don't like Chelsea's GW2 fixture. Will wait and assess.

Cheers! Yeah would really like James too, that GW2 fixture does put me off and by then would give us a clue as to where he is playing suppose. I do really wanna keep Robbo, but at same time feel I could missing a trick with James should he hit the ground running.

Yeah, even if James starts well in GW1 he has a tough game in GW2. Easier after two GWs to downgrade Robbo to him.

Your team is similar to a previous incarnation of mine, but I changed it because I wasn’t too keen on having 3 Arsenal attackers vs Crystal Palace in GW1.

IMO, Robertson should be a lock for 180+ points if he isn’t injured. Barring further transfers (who would need time to get up to speed in Pep’s system), Cancelo is a nailed wing back on one of the most explosive teams in the league.

Most of the 8.0 midfielders have questions - will Diaz assist the assister? Will Maddison move to Newcastle? Which City midfielders will play, and will Mahrez/Grealish continue to look as bad as they did in the Shield? Will Saka be as valuable fantasy-wise with Jesus up front?

For now, I’m betting on the premium D until one of the mid-priced midfielders separates themselves from the pack.

The 5.0 keepers mostly look good choices (Pope, Mendy, Ramsdale, Martinez). No need to upgrade to a premium.

      1. RICICLE
        • 3 Years

Terrific input here fella many thanks! It has helped me further cement the decision to stick with Robbo int his case until like you say a clear mid emerges where he could be downgraded to accommodate one, or likewise another defender perhaps. Robbo seems a good starter to spring from then alongside TAA.

Yeah I thought this about the keepers also, some good options around the 5.0m category.

I'm weighing up A myself. Currently on Martinelli and the expensive defenders but if Cucurella is going to Chelsea as opposed to Man City that really boosts Walker's appeal.

      1. RICICLE
        • 3 Years

Cheers man! Yeah it’s a bit of a toughie and is pretty much the only area that hinges things really. For now with the feedback I think I’m gonna keep Robbo for sure, but if that Cucurella move does happen, that does change things up a little definitely!

Is it mad to go without both Kane and Haaland from the start with 541 formation and cover Haaland with KDB?

It could even be good option in my opinion because KDB is nailed and Haaland may be slowly introduced by Pep, and Alvarez could get some minutes, especially because his work rate is higher than Haaland's.

i don't have him so i don't care lol, but seriously unless he's not fully fit then he should start, Conte has full trust in him and someone of the caliber of Perisic didn't join to just sit on the bench

James/Dias + Perisic, but only because no 5.0 interests me enough to pair with Robbo

Trippier is a popular but I dont like a Newcastle defender for 5.0. His xG and xGa isnt all that great either.
Arsenal defence is a good option -- wouldnt double up if you already have Ramsdale.

    Thoughts on the current lot?

    Ward
    TAA - Robbo - Cancelo - Perisic
    Salah - Saka - Neto - Aaronson

    Bailey-Son-Salah-Neto
    Halland-Jesus
    sub: Ward- N.Williams-Greenwood-Andreas

    B) Raya
    Cancelo-Taa-Perišić
    Bailey-Salah-Martinelli-Rodrigo
    Jesus-Darwin-Kane
    Sub: Ward- N.Williams-Dalot-Andreas

    442 draft good to go?

    -Rotating Patterson with Trippier
-Waiting to see how Chelsea setup with James, if Perisic plays full matches & if Wolves look more attacking than last season for Neto
-Part of me is thinking Mount>Saka & Ramsdale>Jose Sa

    Ramsdale
    TAA - Robertson - Cancelo - Trippier
    Salah (C) - Mount - Martinelli - Bailey
    Kane - Jesus

Bench: Ward - Andreas - Patterson - Greenwood

I'd get Neco, not Patterson. Until gw 5 when you would play Patterson again Coleman would be back anyway.

      Good team

    Pope / Ward
    Digne, Robbo, Neco, Walker, Zinchenko
    Martinelli, Bailey, Salah, Neto, Andreas
    Haaland, Jesus, Kane

Am I putting too much hope on a big front 3 n missing out on defense n mid ?

Considering 3 big hitters it’s good.
The spots that have to be sacrificed have been replaced with some smart ( if somewhat risky) picks. GL

thanks for the feedback ... i am a little concerned about bailey n neto mainly because its all based on preseason form ... not sure how consistent they would b in a full season

I went for this team as well, +/- goalie and low cost defenders, but very similar. I think it is a good look for a pre-wild card differential?

Think not having a player in the 8M price-range is a risk. If one of them goes off, you're in trouble.

I completely agree with you ... figured worse case was downgrade haaland or kane depending on how it goes ... too much hype on haaland but its FOMO tbh

A bit reluctant to go all cheap 4.5 Def ( keeping robbo ) and upgrading to a 8.0 MID ?

This might be a bit long winded but here is the team followed by final decisions to be made.

    Sanchez

    TAA Robertson Cancelo James

    Son Kulu Diaz Mount Bailey

    Gazzaniga Neco Archer Greenwood

1.0 ITB there is always a get out clause to Salah if this is a really bad idea.
Current plan is Son to KDB GW2. Or cash for a Bailey upgrade in GW3 or GW4

    1. Stay with this team and 1.0 ITB
    2. This is a bad idea use the 1.0 ITB to just get Salah. I said I wouldn’t and want to take a gamble at the start of the season
    3. Triple up on Spurs and get the “best” defence 5 possible with Perisic in for Neco and Bailey to Pereira but leaves nothing ITB

i think you should just spend that 1m and get Salah now, since you already have a plan to get him in case he hauls which is inevitable

I do t think a few hauls will make me cave. I honestly think Son can match him and I am thinking KDB out scores Salah this year.
        What about 1 and 3?
What is your preference here leave it or go Pulisic.
Even with removing Son for GW 2 that would still leave 2 of spurs and Che playing each other GW2 which might be a bit much.

i should have stated that i think you should be 2, so go for 3, 1, just tells me that you will cave since the plan is already in place, like someone trying to give up smoking but they keep a pack handy just in case

    TAA | Robbo | Cancelo | James
    Salah | Saka | Neto | Bailey
    Haaland/Kane | Jesus

    Raya | N Williams | Pereira | Archer

    0.0ITB.

James to 5.0 + Raya to Ederson is also of consideration. Thoughts?
