Nottingham Forest were contesting their first European fixture in nearly 30 years on Wednesday – and there was plenty to interest/worry Fantasy managers from the Tricky Trees’ camp.

Here are the main takeaways from Forest’s 2-2 draw with Real Betis.

NO MURILLO AGAIN

Despite Ange Postecoglou saying on Saturday that Murillo (£5.4m) “should be okay” for Wednesday’s clash in Spain, the centre-half was nowhere to be seen.

Murillo indeed didn’t even travel with the squad.

If you missed his pre-match presser on Tuesday, Postecoglou offered mixed news: that Murillo had trained but that he was “still not comfortable”.

We haven’t heard anything new on the Brazilian since the match against Betis.

MILENKOVIC INJURY FEARS EASED

Already without Murillo and longer-term absentee Ola Aina (£4.9m), the defender injury situation threatened to get worse for Forest in the dying embers of Wednesday’s match.

Nikola Milenkovic (£5.5m) hobbled off in the 94th minute in the Estadio La Cartuja, raising fears of a lay-off for him.

Good news, however: Postecoglou thinks it’s just cramp. Mind you, he also said Murillo would be back by now…

“I think it was just cramp with big Nikola.

“Hopefully, we haven’t got any injuries out of tonight but they’re going to be tired, for sure.” – Ange Postecoglou on Nikola Milenkovic

Forest did lose another of their starting XI to injury, with the impressive Douglas Luiz (£5.0m) taken off at half-time.

“He was feeling his hamstring a bit, so we had to take him off.” – Ange Postecoglou on Douglas Luiz

ANGE ON JESUS V WOOD

Injuries aside, the big takeaway from this match was another two-goal performance from Igor Jesus (£5.8m). He’d also bagged a brace in the EFL Cup last week.

Jesus started up front against Betis, getting through just over an hour before making way for Arnaud Kalimuendo (£6.0m). Chris Wood (£7.6m) remained unused.

It was a lively display from the young Brazilian, who racked up a game-high six shots. All of them came from inside the box, too.

Milenkovic injury

Above: The location of Igor Jesus’ six shots v Real Betis, via WhoScored

First tapping in Morgan Gibbs-White‘s (£7.5m) low cross from point-blank range, he then demonstrated his underrated aerial ability by nodding in Luiz’s corner. His goal-poaching instincts were strong: aside from his brace, he couldn’t quite convert two other chances – one after some dazzling footwork from Elliot Anderson (£5.5m), the other after Callum Hudson-Odoi‘s (£6.0m) close-range effort hit the post – from inside the six-yard box.

“Yeah, he’s been great. Igor’s been great since he’s come in and it’s exciting. He’s still sort of learning how we want to play but he’s such a hard worker, he’s great in the box, he’s a good finisher, and I’m really pleased for him.” – Ange Postecoglou on Igor Jesus

If there is a glimmer of hope for the 19.4%-owned Wood ahead of Gameweek 6, it’s that Jesus was picked on Wednesday for his ability to “run beyond” the hosts’ defence. Sunderland, Forest’s next opponents in the league, will likely bring a lower block to the City Ground. Does that play more to Wood’s strengths, perhaps?

“I just felt it was going to be a good game for Igor. Nothing against Woody, it was just that having the ability to run beyond was going to help us. Igor has that, but he is also a good finisher. He has shown that already.

“He is such a willing worker but he has quality to back that up. He has settled in really quickly. I am pleased that he got his goals but we will still need Woody. He is a big part of this team.

“It was a better fit for Igor tonight, because I know how much space beyond you can get, if you work hard. I thought he got rewards for his hard work.” – Ange Postecoglou on his decision to start with Igor Jesus, quoted by the Nottingham Post

Even if he does start in Gameweek 6, Wood is now much more of a game-to-game minutes risk.

ANDERSON MORE ADVANCED

Looking better and better with every game, Anderson was arguably the star of the show in Sevilla.

He was used in a slightly different, more advanced role, as part of a 4-1-4-1 with Ibrahima Sangare (£5.0m) behind him.

Milenkovic injury

Above image from BBC Sport

Racking up two shots and four chances created, the England international enjoyed the extra attacking license.

“I played a little bit higher up today, which is a little bit of a different role which I quite enjoy.” – Elliot Anderson

It may only be a tactic that Postecoglou uses in tougher matches, given that Gibbs-White was used a winger, but it demonstrates another string to Anderson’s bow beyond defensive contributions (DefCons).

THE ANGE-BALL EVOLUTION

Slowly but surely, we’re seeing signs of Forest becoming the team that Postecoglou wants them to be.

The first-half display was brilliant, with some slick, fast attacking play and chances galore. Forest outshot their hosts 16-9 over the entire game, while Sofascore had the xG at a comprehensive 0.49-3.27.

There’s still no clean sheet but aside from early and late goals from Cedric Bakambu and Antony, there weren’t too many big chances for the La Liga outfit.

“I thought our football was outstanding at times in the first half. The only thing I could fault is that we didn’t put the game to bed. We should have really finished them off in the first half. Second half, we sat off a little bit and had to defend but again, I never really felt threatened by Betis. I don’t think Matty Sels had too many saves to make.” – Ange Postecoglou

Anyone fancy a punt on Doku or Foden this week? Or both? Do they have a significant ceiling over Reijnders, whose due to rise in price tonight. Doku and Foden may rise tomorrow.

    Guys hear me out

    Currently on

    Petrović, Dubravka
    Timber, Chalobah, Vdv, Porro, Esteve
    Salah, Gakpo, Semenyo, Kudus, Enzo
    Gyokeres, Joao Pedro, Evanilson

    With only 4 transfers I can get Esteve, Dubravka, 2 fodders and this team;

    Petrović
    Timber, Chalobah, Vdv
    Salah, Kudus, Reijnders, Enzo
    Haaland, Gyokeres, Joao Pedro

Actually I'm missing 0.1 to do that. Is Haaland a must have for this week so much that I should do some crazy moves, like WC or taking multiple hits? Surely my team looks fine and does not need a wildcard, and these transfers I can work out somehow through next couple of weeks? Is this team that I'm aiming for a maybe a bit too inflexible? Is my current team better than my wanted team or should I go for it? Lastly, is it possible that we will have a 3.8 defender in the coming weeks? How probable is that to happen what do you think?

Thanks in advance for all your answers and sorry for this long comment..

    Best options on WC?

    A) KDH
    B) Stach

    1) Rodon
    2) Gudmundsson
    3) Mukiele

Have to play BB as well but dont want to pick from these based on just BB.

    1. Riders of Yohan
      • 7 Years
      2 months, 11 days ago

If you genuinely don’t care about bench boost then A over B. Better attack and more involved in the attack.

3 I think is best by a mile.

      1. Karan_G14
        • 9 Years
        2 months, 11 days ago

Yeah I dont think I can pick based on BB. One injury can ruin the whole BB and then picks become useless.
I had Reijnders, Dorgu and Dubravka on my bench this week with Murillo injured still dont think any other single gameweek will beat this one.

I had the same dilemma for midfield, went with Stach as I already have Ndiaye. I think KDH is close to a ban aswell.

      1. Karan_G14
        • 9 Years

The KDH ban is annoying but I cant help but feel KDH is playing a very important role for a much better team and he's my 8th attacker so 1 game ban shouldnt decide the better option.

It shouldn't but it may cause an issue when you want to play BB

The combi of owning Ndiaye and KDH being close to a ban is exactly why I went Stach over KDB. In isolation KDB looks the more exciting pick. Can eventually still go there in a BB week

What are people's thoughts on Calafiori v Gabriel?

I am currently on Calafiori, on WC and funds not really an issue - who would you guys go for?

    1. Riders of Yohan

Gabriel 100%. Long term you just don’t want any rotation risk

    2. Karan_G14

Gabriel just for the safety of starts.

On a WC I'd be tempted by Gabriel just because there is slightly more rotation risk with Calafiori as the season goes on

I like Calafiori if you have bench cover. Ideally I’d have both of them if I was putting more money in defense. I understand the “safe” argument but I like the upside

I'm very bullish on Calafiori. I'm gonna go for him. I think his attacking threat is underappreciated and he's cheaper too. I oddly don't even think he's less nailed than Gabriel. I can see Arteta doing random things this year. He's already benched Saliba. What's to stop him from benching Gabriel for rest and playing Hincapie or even Calafiori himself at CB?

I think it's just as likely as Calafiori getting benched for MLS. The risk is Calafiori's injury record but he seems to be hanging in there so far. I'm willing to risk it.

      + Attacking Threat
      + Cheaper price
      - Worse injury record

      I think the 2 +s outnumber the -

I don't think any of the Arsenal defenders are gonna play 38 games this year. So if that's the case, why not go Calafiori for cheaper and for more attacking threat?

          1. x.jim.x
            • 11 Years
            2 months, 10 days ago

They don't need to play 38 games - they need to play the next bunch of games until the next wildcard.

Who do you think is more likely to do that - Gabriel or Calafiori? Saliba only got benched because of injury, so using that to try and make out no one's spot is safe is extremely disingenuous, as Tony is getting at.

I think I would. Inevitable rotation inbound and Gyok and Isak as potential targets

Would you transfer in Ndiaye if you already owned KDH?

Other options are Spurs (Xavi, Kudus) or Brighton boys (Mitoma, Minteh, Georgino) which will rotate better when Everton have more difficult fixtures.

Feel like Ndiaye is a bit of a boring template pick but offers the most routes to points.

Would probably avoid the double up and hedge with a Spurs player

          Probably both nailed.

          Alderete - left footed LCB
Mukiele - can play CB or shift RB (main position) with Ballard coming back in

Currently leaning towards Alderete over Mukiele. Defcons are more likely in the CB positions and Mukiele may move to RB.

Potential back 4 options due to Reinildo 3 game suspension:

                  LB: Hume or Masuaku
                  LCB: Alderete
                  RCB: Mukiele or Ballard
                  RB: Hume or Mukiele

Makes sense, thanks for the intel.

Though notably Mukiele racked up quite a few more DefCons in the last few games. I see how that is likely to change though

I think my WC team is done.

        Petrovic Dubravka
        Calafiori Senesi Richards Andersen Rodon
        Salah Semenyo Reijnders Ndiaye Kudus
        Haaland Pedro Guiu

1.2m ITB. The plan is to do Ndiaye/Kudus > Gordon/Eze in GW7. Thinking Kudus > Gordon is likely in GW7.

My BB is done already hence the Guiu pick. Go with Salah + Haaland early and hope they do the damage while people are fumbling around with Fernandes and pens from their CDM.

I have 2 FTs after the WC. I think I'll be fine. This week those two mids are just so clearly best.

          Salah + Guiu = Bruno + Gyokeres

Salah really has to do the job of 2 x 200 point players.

He could though thats why im buliding my WC in a way its easy to get him back without losing Haaland but I also have BB to play so happy to wait and monitor that situation while Salah has slightly tough fixtures and I can play my BB and also see what happening with more affordable premiums like Palmer, Saka, Gyokeres, Bruno & Boomo. It could go either way.

The only way I see Salah & Haaland working is if no two other 8-10m players have 200 point seasons.

I would get Bruno and Mateta in place of Salah and Guiu...I can see you have used ur BB, hence picked Guiu...but I feel 8 good attackers will give you more breathing space and you can rotate ur attackers based on fixtures.

I am benching Gyokeres this week as my other 7 attackers have good games this week

          Think about it

If I'm fielding Salah every week and you're rotating Bruno and Gyokeres I'm gonna bet I'll come out on top at the end of the season. It's a question of FPL philosophy. I have never liked having a strong bench and prefer to put as much money on the field as possible.

You're assuming folks are sticking with Bruno/Gyokeres rotation for the rest of the season which is highly unlikely...

Ofc that's not the actual comparison. But as I said, a matter of FPL philosophy. I just want my money on the field and not on the bench.

                The true comparison is like:
Salah + Ndiaye + Guiu vs Fernandes + Gyokeres + Ndiaye where you have to play 2 every week. I would much rather have Salah + Ndiaye every week.

Its actually KDH/Stach on the bench and those 3 starting every week.

I can get Bruno if I want.

                    Kudus + Ndiaye > Fernandes + KDH.

Gives me a front 7 of Salah, Bruno, Semenyo, Reijnders, KDH, Haaland, Pedro

I think I prefer the two mid-priced options rather than Bruno and a 5m.
