Election fever gripped the community this week in its search for a Scout Picks champion in what proved to be the closest contest yet. We look back on that campaign, whilst also checking in on the activity surrounding the frantic deadline day dash Ultimate Fantasy Premier League managers faced. Elsewhere, we revisit a love letter for Leighton Baines and consider the balance of perception versus reality. As ever, we throw in all the latest members tables, hottest topics and hear news of a new team-based quiz taking place soon.

The Community Articles

Gameweek 4 proved was pivotal for those playing the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League (UFPL) game as the transfer window closed and managers made their final squad changes before January. Loans are still available up to then, but may not be needed if managers can get their selection right. Luckily QPR Expects Glory was on hand with this excellent guide to picking the right UFPL players for the next few months.

This weekend’s matches were also important for those looking for key differentials. The Puntmaster is proving quite the soothsayer with his regular trio of gambles and this week Southampton’s Graziano Pelle was among those coming into sharp focus in his crystal ball for Gameweek 4. Arvin-ation is another regular “punter” and offered up a trio of midfield options ahead of Gameweek 4.

With 15 % ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game, Leighton Baines is hardly a differential. Christina argued, though, that his ownership ought to be higher. Here’s his passionate defence of the Everton man who repaid the faith with a strong haul in Gameweek 4.

Meanwhile, AZ took a look at the promoted teams’ defences to see if any budget friendly differential defenders had emerged as enticing prospects.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

As British Prime Minister David Cameron and Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond took part in some frantic last-minute campaigning in the Scottish independence referendum, we had our very own dramatic battle on the hustings. In our tightest contest yet to find a community champion for our Gameweek Scout Picks, Arvin-ation prevailed over rival Doosra by a nail-biting 105-104 votes. This was our biggest poll yet, with the community offering up 20 candidates to choose from. Watch out on Monday when the morning’s daily hot topic will launch the search for a Gameweek 5 community champion.

There was more campaigning against homophobia in football this week by the charity Stonewall. It has been urging footballers to show their support for their campaign by wearing rainbow laces. Thanks to the efforts of Tinkerman, our community also showed their support for the campaign by adopting a range of brightly coloured Gravatar images.

Facer chipped in with another of the week’s popular posts – our resident injury expert correctly assessed that Aaron Ramsey would shake off his injury and start.

Diego Costa was, of course, another player to recover from an injury doubt for Gameweek 4 – with devastating effect Pepin pointed out that, with such a high ownership, his hat-trick this weekend presents the season with its first game-changing moment, particularly for those that captained the Chelsea striker. Why is Pardew for Kinnear took this issue further, showcasing how a raft of highly owned, high scoring players, also including Cesc Fabregas, have the potential to ruin the season.

Impressed by QPR Expects Glory’s guide to the UFPL transfer day, 7 Shades of Smoke consulted his abacus to come up with this detailed look at where the smart money should be invested in the game. This will be worth looking back on in January when the transfer window reopens.

Finally, we asked to what extent perception clouds our sense of reality over a player’s potential. Inspired by a raft of posts critical of Danny Welbeck’s goal-scoring ability, despite statistics showing he is one of the Premier League’s most accurate strikers, we asked which other players cause a blind spot. For Goonerbyron, Yaya Toure remains a no-go zone, while for Athletico Timbo, Mario Balotelli is a player he remains reluctant to recruit; the showing against Villa certainly backed his stance.

The Members Tables

My goals imminent table, which seeks to predict potential goal-scorers based on goal attempts so far, claimed a couple of notable victories this weekend after correctly anticipating strikes from Kevin Mirallas and Pelle. Members are urged to keep a close eye on this table during the week to gain an insight into Gameweek 5’s under-the-radar potential high scorers.

Elsewhere in the members area Saintkeratinsins constructed this interesting look at the most attacking midfielders so far this season based on attempts on goal. Goal threat was also a focus for Burdinho in his look at the key performance indicators for forwards, midfielders and defenders.

Shots in the box remains the key criteria for assessing attacking potential for Banana Shaquiri, meanwhile Sk42ers looked at more negative attributes of strikers by delving into indicators such as bad touches and big chances missed.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The Fantasy Freak dropped in to bring us news of an intriguing new team-based quiz competition he has planned. More details can be found here. Meanwhile, to take part in discussion on another team-based competition, the FFS UEFA group’s Hockey World Cup, please visit their dedicated competition article here.

Just activated my WildCard for this, please let me know what you think?:

    Begovic, Gilks
    Clyne, Taylor, Duff, Wilson, Moore
Boyd, Di Maria, Sterling, Ramsey, Siggy
    Pelle, Aguero, Costa

    £0.5m in the bank

Or would you rather have Chadli + Naismith (plus 0.8 to upgrade defence) over Boyd + Pelle?

Tempted to say Ramsey > Fab. Fab is gonna get a massive amount of assists over the season and most people have him. Maybe worth a go with ADM and monitor Ramsey see how he does cause he looks a little off it to me lately. Sure he'll pick it up eventually though.

Yeah I almost jerked Ram to ADM right after the game but feels too soon to jump on that. Ramsey definitely looking a little out of sorts to me recently but he deserves some faith, especially since I'm an Ars supporter =P Just needs one of those great games to get his confidence in check.

If anything, only my defense really needs a transfer this week: Lovren (whu) Terry (mci) Ferdinand (STK) Chester (new) Wisdom (tot)

    A) Terry > Baines

brazilian goalkeeper rogerio ceni has just scored his 120th career goal. he now has 5 goals in 21 games this season.
is this the reason FPL never bothered making a seperate points total for goalkeeper goals? surely a goalkeeper deserves more than 6 for a goal, yet if they did get more there's a risk of a goalkeeper becoming too essential if a penalty taking keeper ever rocked up in the premier league.

Often the best as they know what keepers expect and are trained to look for. Hart takes a very decent penalty. 1 or 2 others in the past have too.

was di maria that 'omg stop what you're doing and get this man in at all costs' today?
i'm not going to play the QPR card as great fixtures exist, that's what happens over a season. it's more the initial doubt i had over him. he's obviously an unreal player so don't throw that one out, this is fpl, an often great leveler where your dempseys can pip your david silvas. can he really clean up in a team with 2 centre forwards? did anything today suggest he will do more than his last real madrid season from a similar hydris position? basically lots of assists but not so many goals. right now we've got fabregas lording it up with not a single goal but long term you do really need goals once you reach prices above 9mil.

Played very well but his goal was ridiculously lucky and undeserved and his assist was just a short pass.

Di Maria's was a shot too, for sure. Not as obvious as my boy Graziano's glorious miskick, but a shot nonetheless.

He will get mostly assists. His goal today was pretty lucky, was a cross slightly gone wrong and I think Green should have done better with it. Maybe just took him by surprise too.

Think Fab is a better buy and cheaper. If di Maria was 9mil I would consider getting him but 9.6 is very expensive for someone that won't score that many goals.

Also RVP is not looking sharp, Rooney is not at his best and Falcao will need time to settle so don't see Utd scoring heaps of the goals the way Chelsea will.

He's an assist machine, maybe on the level of a Cesc rather than a Silva, but personally I prefer to go for goalscorers. He'll score very well, no doubt, but given his price, there are several cheaper alternatives who I think will match him at least.

He was very attacking today. Think he could get a good amount of attacking returns this season actually. Got in and around the box quite a bit iirc

I am more interested in Herrera, looked to be taking up some nice positions today. Kinda wish I had him in UFPL, perfect type of player for that game. Think is a good FPL pick too if he is allowed that bit of freedom he had today.

The main concern is we didn't learn much today. Remember people praised Spurs after they destroyed QPR? Chadli has been very impressive but they have not produced that same amount of quality since that game. Will be interested to see how Utd do next week. Much tougher game.

Well, I thought his first 5 or 6 passes into the box were poor.
There is no doubt he is a super player. The ball control while running at full pelt was a joy. His goal and assist were a bit lucky too.
I agree that the 2 CFs in the same team MAY limit him FPL wise.
I'm not jumping on just yet.
Glad that he is in the Prem tho, great player.

He won't take all the set pieces though,,will he??

There is no doubt he is a fantastic player. Think he is both overpriced in FPL and real life. When he plays well he is so so good but seems a little inconsistent. Was watching him during World Cup and wasn't impressed. Played very well in Germ friendly and pretty good today so maybe he is at his best against weak teams and is not much of a big game player.

Don't know much about his time at Real in terms of big games but the level of competition in England is a lot greater, with the 'weaker' teams offering tough competition.

i think they're both too integral to chelsea for it to affect either. more likely the other way round where they're benched in the last couple of champions league games after chelsea have already sealed inevitable qualification from their easy group.
matic, fabregas, hazard, costa. the 4 dependables imo. i'd only worry about injury slowing fabregas down, and of course you don't even need to worry about that, if it happens it happens and you act

I just got him in. Gonna play him every week. Is on form and has good fixtures. If you spend 6.1 on a midfielder you should play him most of the time. A cheapie should be no more than 4.5 and is normally bench fodder

Squad's paper thin, but hoping to hold out one more week to WC to when it makes a bit more sense to do so, fixture wise.

    Krul (Begovic)
    Cahill Duff Wisdom (Jones Dummett)
    Siggy Hazard Sterling Eriksen (Young)
    Costa Rooney Austin

    1.3 ITB

So what are my priorities this week?

    A) Jones -> Any defender (potentially just a 1 week punt)

Yeah. Silva is actually really good in UFPL. That's why I love it because you can pick players like that who play very well but are always the assist of the assist and such.

I think Southampton did very well in the transfer window. Was afraid of them dropping out of the league altogether after who they lost but they seem stronger this year. Really good team and great mix of young and experience. Playing great football too.

Will Chester play tomorrow? Have Duff coming off the bench.

Of course he will play. Only missed last game cause of suspension.

given how they defended v villa you'd guess so. i'd still feel nervy with him if hull don't line up with 352 though

Dawson is so clumsy defending that I’m not even looking for opts now that I think about it.

what would you do with van persie gals and guys? the plan was give him qpr and leicester then swap to aguero (once arsenal and chelsea were out the way) or sturridge (hanging onto rvp for the west ham home game too then getting sturridge on his return after everton).
but would you even give him the leicester game? cut the losses, take it on the chin and free transfer his ass (is costa obvious v man city? likewise aguero v chelsea? swap to rooney pocketing 2mil). or stay stronger brother give him the leicester game he was bought for where the lost points could all be recouped there and then

He looks very sluggish and out of form. I'd sell. If you don't have Costa I'd get him regardless of upcoming fixture (form over fixture right?). Rooney or even a punt on Falcao would work also imo. Robin could prove me wrong but he just hasn't done anything lately and if you don't get on the score sheet in a 4-0 win at home, it says something.

i would swap to rooney. looks the most nailed option over falcao/rvp. lvg likes to play his captain as much as possible

Aguero in 23 minutes is better than RvP in 80. i have both Ageuro and Costa and I have no problem with them facing each other.

Guess I'd lean toward giving him the Leicester game, unless you think he won't start. His upside is surely much higher than Costa and Aguero's this week.

It's a real predicament for me as I drafted him as my first round pick for my draft team on Saturday. His performance yesterday whilst just OK still gives me further concern that he's set for a period on the bench. I should imagine that it will only take a goal or two for him to be right as rain again.

If he was in my FPL game proper, I wouldn't have picked him at all to be honest. I'd say hold until after the West Ham game. A differential I guess.

Hey guys. How did falcao play when he came on? If he started next week for sure would you get him in?

Didn't get many minutes and United already were up 4-0 when he came on so they weren't as aggressive as in the first half... so hard to judge him really. He had one clear scoring opportunity which he promptly shot into Green. He could kill it next time though, who knows. Di Maria didn't overly impress in his debut vs Burnley and look out that turned out.
