Scout Report – Edin Dzeko to Man City

After a chase that lasted around 18 months, Manchester City have finally completed the signing of the sought-after Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko from German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in a deal which is reported to be around £27 million. The 24 year old is being hailed as the final piece in Roberto Mancini’s jigsaw as the Eastlands club push for the title, with the City boss recently claiming:

“We have the chance to win the league this year and the decisive factor could be Edin Dzeko. This player can decide titles and that is why we want him.”

No pressure on the new boy there, then…

The Statistics

It was reported back in 2005 when Teplice offered Zeljeznicar €25,000 for the striker they considered it an excellent offer and happily agreed. This was when the Bosnian wasn’t considered the fine, world-class striker he is today. Young prospects were judged on their technical and dribbling ability and, according to The Guardian’s Jonathan Wilson, Dzeko was considered “a bit English”.

A quick look over the player’s career statistics, especially his time at Wolfsburg – where Dzeko scored 58 goals and made 31 assists over the past two and a half seasons- shows just how prolific he can be. He has also consecutively won Bosnian Footballer of the Year (2009, 2010), Bundesliga Players’ German Footballer of the Year (2008-2009) and Bundesliga Top Scorer (2009-2010).

Because of Dzeko’s large stature he is thought of as a target man but former manager Steve McClaren says he can offer so much more than this:

“He is a very very good player and that is reflected in the price. He is a big lad, strong and quick too. But he also has good technique. But most importantly he is a goal scorer who gets them with his left foot, his right foot, his head. He can score all types of goals. That is what City are getting. He is a good buy for them.”

The Prospects

One initial question which is raised for Fantasy Managers is where the powerful forward will fit in amongst the side’s wealth of talent? The will surely mean the end is nigh for the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor and Roque Santa Cruz, who have barely featured all season. Owners of Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli will also be mildly concerned as to Dzeko’s impact.

Mancini has signalled that City fans won’t have long to to wait to see his new signing in action, confirming that Dzeko is poised to make his debut against Wolves at the weekend:

“Dzeko will be an important player, he is very different from the other strikers we have. He will be important for the rest of the season. He will play next weekend and be available against Wolverhampton.”

It is likely the 6ft 4inch forward will become the primary striker in a forward three which City have become accustomed to this season, though this means that someone will of course have to make way. The likely candidate for limited game-time seems to be Mario Balotelli, who may have to get accustomed to cameo appearances from the bench. Brazilian striker Jo, who has been getting some rare game-time as of late, will be pushed even further down the pecking order and could struggle to even make the City bench.

If Mancini sticks with the current system, then Dzeko will surely occupy the central role with Tevez to one side and one of either David Silva, Balotelli, James Milner and Adam Johnson, on the other flank. With plenty of crosses and balls being pelted and swung Dzeko’s way, will Tevez’s withdrawn role leave him missing out on those crucial Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points? Alternatively, Tevez could also play behind a lone frontman, perhaps limiting Yaya Toure’s advances from midfield. This is all purely speculative guesswork, of course, and Mancini may be planning a complete overhaul of the 4-3-3 system with a new trick or two up his sleeve.

Now he has his target man, Mancini may wish to revert to the 4-4-2 or 4-3-1-2 formations that he used whilst managing Inter Milan. These systems had plenty of emphasis on defending as a team and then counter-attacking with the use of attacking speedy players (David Silva, Adam Johnson, Carlos Tevez, James Milner) feeding a target man, at Inter this role was given to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and, if used, then Dzeko could step in at City.

If opting for a 4-3-1-2, which Mancini could favour given his wealth of defensive-minded central midfielders (Gareth Barry, Nigel De Jong, Yaya Toure, Vincent Kompany, Patrick Vieira), this would hand extra attacking responsibilities for the full-backs. Given the narrow width of the formation, the likes of Aleksander Kolarov will be expected to be free to bomb down the flank. This could then give Kolarov greater potential to pick up extra FPL points and with a current ownership of 1.7%, he may well be worth another look if we see evidence of him becoming a key figure.

Dzeko’s FPL price is as yet unknown but, going off reputation alone, one would expect it to be in the higher reaches of the valuation spectrum – somewhere in the region of 9.0. That may not put off suitors however, particularly if Dzeko cements a starting role and begins to sniff out goals. Given pitch-time and service, Dzeko has all the potential to become a reliable point-scorer to offer another much-needed attacking Fantasy option in Mancini’s lineup.

*Update 11/01* Edin Dzeko has now been added to the FPL game, with a valuation of  £9.5 million.

Ridiculous knee-jerk. Tevez is the most reliable big-budget striker in the game. Despite playing in a defence-minded team, with rotation left right and centre all around him, he has consistently delivered value over the last 18 months. And Dzeco hasn't even kicked a ball yet!

I'm not suggesting you do the same. Tevez has been the main man at City, he *might* not be now. It's a gamble, it's not like picking Fabs before a double gw at home to west ham and blackpool.

Tevez is the heartbeat of the City team, which is why they fought so hard to keep him. Dzeco is the gamble, he could be the icing on the cake which makes them champions or he could be another mid-season Asprilla (Newcastle fans will shudder at the memory of how that mid-season signing actually spoiled what they already had). I'm backing Carlos.

I was thinking of Walker down the line if Villa can stop leaking bucket loads of goals.

Seen him play for QPR regularly this season and he could offer great attacking returns. If he was 4 - 4.5 he could be the next Coleman.

I think they will. I'm actually seriously considering Torres. The arrival of a new manager, a real legend, is enough to convince any team to lift their game. They also looked more threatening against ManUtd in the cup. It could have been a really good game if Gerrard wasn't so stupid.

I love the Scout; but for how long will they keep on insisting Kolarov being such a great buy?

The facts are he's been inconsistent, unefficient and carries as heavy a rotation risk as any of the other ManC fullbacks.

Currently sitting with an activated wildcard and feel as one of my back 3 cemented for the season i need a man city def! I have 5.9mil for the slot meaning i need to pick between kolarov/boateng/zabaleta. Who would be your pick as the most consistent starter there...

Well, that's the problem - the only consistent starters are Kolo and Kompany.

But if you look at the ManC defenders in terms of Points per Game divided by value Richards, Lescott, Zabaleta and Boateng all outperforms Kolarov.

I go for Hart and feel I get the defensive ManC coverage I need.

Just as Kolarov's point hauls haven't matched the love for him, I also think the criticism of him now is unfair. Kolarov could easily have got many more points than he did. Came close to scoring a few times, got withdrawn 3 mins before getting one clean sheet bonus, sent off in another clean sheet. All 'what-ifs', but that's what people were working with, his potential. He could quite easily have been pulling in similar scores to Baines.

A player who's "prone" to get sent off is a big negative in my book. And the withdrawal after 58 mins are a direct cause of his inconsistent play.

That said, I wasn't so much criticizing him as a player, but the consistent buy recommendation from the Scouts.

Should he suddenly show signs of improvement in the factors mention, mainly in term of efficiency (assists or goals) or regular play, I will consider him right away. But I find no reason why people should try to predict any upswing on his points ahead of the turn at this point.

Well thats one way of getting ahead in this game, taking the points before the sheep jump on. I'm staying with him myself. Once you wait until his assists and goals it may already be too late.
People dithered on Coleman ( I did ) and missed his hauls in his first few games.

It might be the right call - now. But in hindsight, it was not the right call when the Scout made it back in November.

I am not saying I would wait out until he has 5 goals and 7 assist. But at this stage maybe I would like to see him actually get one before acting.

Coleman is not quite comparable I think. He cost £4.4m at the time.

I've got Tevez and will be cpt him this week. But, I am a bit worried that this signing will mean Tevez returning to the Tevez that was at United - i.e. with Rooney the main striker and Tevez playing deeper, so not scoring many goals.

And Tevez missed a pen recently - does Dzeko take them?

I am also contemplating leaving Rafael on the bench. My defense will be Kolarov bardsley Coleman.
I don't see a Man U clean sheet againdt the spurs.

don't get me wrong your team looks solid but you could save serious cash by downgrading vidic to rafael and strengthening your midfield or upgrading carr to bosingwa or even save extra by gettin in djourou. you already have foster. just my opinion. i used mine this week to change 4 defenders.

I disagree with the writer's analysis.

Sunderland may have had a good clean sheet record so far, but their fixtures are not good. They don't have double gameweeks, Gordon isn't known for making an insane amount of saves (Foster-esque), and he doesn't rotate as well with other keepers.

Fabianski - Begovic for rotation and fixtures all the way. Foster if you want a more reliable save point gatherer.

City are doing that thing that Chelsea did. Buy some really talented players. They sit on the bench for years then they sell them.

I'm not a city fan but SWP allthough he doesn't have the best technique always had a very good record. We call him 'bumble' cause he just bumbles his way through players.

It's the Theo Walcott theory, if you kick it and run and you are fast a f*** you'll eventually achieve somthing

Interestingly if you go to the fantasy stats page without logging in on the FPL site, Walker is listed as a Spurs player at £4 million. But if you log in he disappears. I suggest therefore when he surfaces as a Villa player he will be $4 million again.

a forward line of those 3 has crippled you as your team value isnt the highest (not a dig there just saying)

if u really want drog maybe go berb instead of rooney or coleman instead of baines

just do u can upgrade thomas and ferguson
