Scouting The Doubles

Scouting the Doubles – Everton

Reading’s surprise 1-0 FA Cup win at Goodison Park on Tuesday evening gave the green light to yet another double gameweek, with Everton now facing two league games in the next seven days. Having beaten holders Chelsea in the previous round, David Moyes’ side were odds-on favourites to progress, but a thoroughly downbeat Toffees boss admitted post-match:

”We let the supporters down, we didn’t play well enough and we got what we deserved. We had to chase the game and got more desperate as the game went on and we didn’t have enough to open them up. “

Moyes will be looking for a big response from his side, then, as they travel to St James’ Park this Saturday afternoon before facing Carling Cup holders Birmingham City at Goodison next Wednesday evening.

The Prospects

Everton’s 2-0 win over Sunderland last weekend will no doubt have Fantasy Managers mulling over defensive options but it’s really only papered over the cracks of their defensive fragility; they have chalked up just two clean sheets in their last seventeen league games, Sunderland match inclusive. Before the game with Steve Bruce’s side, Everton had played seven league matches since the turn of the year and conceded two or more goals in six of them.

Despite a poor showing this season, the competitive nature of the Premier League means Everton’s season still hangs in the balance; a win at Newcastle would leave them just three points behind sixth-placed Merseyside rivals Liverpool but, on the other hand, Moyes’ side sit just five points above the drop zone. As Arsenal recently discovered, winning at St James’ Park is not at all straightforward and Alan Pardew has suffered just one loss in the last nine league games as Newcastle boss. Everton have only averaged one goal per game away from home, too.

Birmingham approach their own double gameweek just two points off the drop zone, albeit with two games in hand over their relegation rivals. With the Carling Cup win under their belt, Alex McLeish’s side will be fired up for the Goodison visit and will be looking to replicate the form that has seen them win two of their last three on the road. Despite their poor FA Cup showing, Everton have been in good scoring form at home of late, netting two or more goals in each of their last four home league games.

The Likely Lads

The number of assists Leighton Baines racks up negates his lack of clean sheets; the left-back has managed nine already this season, the sixth highest total in the league. Put into perspective, the second highest number of assists by a defender is four. Factor his set-piece duties into the equation, and it’s no real surprise that Baines is the fourth highest-scoring defender in FPL to date.

Moyes’ decision to field Seamus Coleman as a right midfielder has allowed the young Irishman to garner attacking points (3 goals, 3 assists) which, like Baines, means he hasn‘t suffered too badly from the minimal defensive returns. The fact that he’s over £2m cheaper than Baines sees Coleman with the higher ownership of the two. Having been hauled off on 45 minutes of the Reading Cup tie however, there is a nagging doubt that Coleman will start in both of Everton’s two fixtures – he is certainly overdue a rest.

In light of injuries to Marouanne Fellaini and Tim Cahill, the onus is firmly on Mikel Arteta to step up and be counted, following a disappointing season for the Spaniard; although he’s missed just four league games this season, Arteta has picked up just 81 FPL points. Despite this, plenty investment will surely follow, with Fantasy Managers pinning their hopes on the playmaker’s shoulders.

There’s no doubting the quality of Louis Saha -he’s grabbed six goals in his last five league games- but the Frenchman’s inability to steer clear makes him an infuriating Fantasy Option. Following a slow start to his career on Merseyside, Jermaine Beckford has started to show a consistency in the top-flight (he’s scored four in his last five league games) and priced at just £5.0m, could be a real bargain if he continues his recent form. We just have to hope that the traffic doesn’t hold him up.

Cheeky Punts

Victor Anichebe’s return from injury gives Everton a couple of options; he can provide competition for Seamus Coleman for that right midfield slot but, alternatively, injuries to Everton’s attacking options may see Anichebe find some time up front. Everton lined up in a 4-5-1 for the Reading game but Moyes has been fielding 4-4-2 lately, and if either Saha or Beckford (or both) miss either (or both) of the upcoming games, he could be the beneficiary.

If Moyes’ front two are fit and available, however, Jack Rodwell could also be an alternative choice; with the Toffees central midfield so depleted at present, there’s every likelihood he’ll take part in both games and offer potential low the price bracket. Leon Osman is another risky temptation – he fired in more efforts on goal than any of Everton’s midfield against Sunderland and set up three goalscoring efforts for team-mates.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Ferries league sounds good!

Think i've finally decided to keep my Wild Card until GW 32/33. Means i can set up for Chelsea's decent games knowing who'll be fit.

    As a result, thinking of:
    Brunt -> Nasri
    RvP -> Saha
-4 points. Then hope Saha can stay fit.
    Madness!?

Brilliant. This is so annoying my mate who doesnt plan anything and literally just looks at the gameweek in hand and makes transfers accordingly, without any thought for whether they play the following gameweek or have a double e.t.c has the luck of the devil! So my only chance is to think ahead and manipulate double gameweeks to my advantage. It seems now that even doing that wont work. May aswell just bloody give up!

I suppose at least the players id planned on transferring in are players id want even with a single i.e nasri, lampard, luiz, vdv so its not too bad. Still somewhat irksome.

Excellent info so the ones who could potentially be affected are

        Man utd
        Arsenal
        Manchester city

Quite a few teams are potentially affected. However, the FA had set aside the following midweek as a blank to allow those in the Semis an obvious replay date - But Tot/Ars and Che/Birm have already been scheduled on this date - which means Man City/Tottenham or Arsenal/Liverpool or Birmingham/Sunderland couldn't be put back 3 or 4 days.

Barton rated 50/50 for everton game but contrary to reports Ireland looks like he's out, which should hopefully improve Barton's chances with Taylor being suspended:

I like him but his price scares me somewhat as it kind of stops you getting guys like Nasri, VdV and Rooney at the same time.

Torres up against a woeful Blackpool defence is worth a punt but Rooney is in better form and has nice fixtures after next week.

Luiz has the lure of cleanies as well as attacking production and is only £6m. He may be the best one to go for to be honest.

If Torres scores 2 against Blackpool then you can burn 4 points in transferring him out for Rooney the following week if needs must. You'd only be missing the Liverpool fixture (where I expect Berbatov to start).

    1. RMWCT. Not decided on a couple of things yet, eg 2 brum defs, gotta wait for news on RJ, not sure I wanna keep out nasri but I think he's expensive given fabs is coming back soon. Undecided on Luiz but I think Ancelottery will play him, he looked classy to me so far.

    2. Where do I find the 0.6 I am missing?

    Foster - Begovic
    R Johnson - Carr - Luiz - Walker - Djourou
    A Young - VDV - O'Hara - Flampinator - Nani
    Tevez - Beckford - Rooney

What a Kick-in-Ass performance by Irish cricket team yesterday night. Brilliant. I guess, ireland-england are huge Sports rivals. Doesn’t get better. This is the best Cricket World Cup I’v ever seen. No favorites any more and the cup is wide open. The quality is so high from all teams.
Whats the view in England/Ireland regarding the loss/victory ?

Less of football for me next few weeks, more of Cricket!

England are far superior in every sport that when the small nations like Ireland, Scotland and Wales beat us occasionally the whole nation goes bananas for about a fortnight. But in England we are so used to beating these minnows that we stay humble and poised when we win.

England and Scotland have played each other more than any other nation, playing 110 official matches.[54][55] England have marginally the better record overall in the fixture, with 45 wins to Scotland's 41.[56] There have been 24 draws, only three of them goalless, with 98 years separating the first and second of those matches. Not as great as you would think eh considering that there are 50 million of you guys compared to 5 million of us.

Not to get into a long winded post but "Beat us occasionally" in regards to the major sports is wrong. The stats say other wise.
Ireland have won the last encounters in the major sports v England in Rugby, football, & now Cricket. Bar Cricket (for obvious reasons )that statement about occasional wins in regards to Ireland is false

I could post the stats in detail on rugby (Ireland have a far superior head to head record in the last decade - Ireland winning 5 of the last 6) and footbal(Ireland have won, drawn and led before abandoned the last 3 games over 3 decades) which proves this wrong but i dont want to get into it in a long winded motion

Needless to say the stats in regards to head to head Ireland v England dont back up what you said over the last number of years in Rugby and Football

Nothing personal, not an attack on england. Merely a defence of the stats.

Ireland see the English as rivals in all sports, but I'm not sure we consider them as rivals as such in anything other than rugby though I'm sure we'll be looking for revenge in cricket. 🙂
Last England Ireland football match was a loooong time ago now and was unfortunately called off due to a large number of tools.

Trade off is that I will be left with 0.2 in bank

If I get nasri instead of lampard I will have 4.7 in the bank instead which will allow yay a to vdv for the next gw when vdv has west ham at home and should be fit

Lamps might do great this week but next two are city home and stoke away.. Nasri has sun WBA bla.. Surely nasri shud score more overall plus the extra cash can get points elsewhere

It's a tricky one. I don't have Cesc, but prefer Walcott when he's fit as Arsenal become less one dimensional with his pace in behind (a good foil for Van Persie).

I've also made .4m on Van Persie but I think I will get rid this week for Torres or a DGW striker. Van Persie should have dropped .2m by the time I'm looking to get him in again, where as Fabregas should only miss the Sunderland game.
