Scouting The Doubles – Birmingham City

As the remnants of party poppers are swept away and crystal champagne glasses packed into boxes, the elation of being crowned Carling Cup champions will have faded for Birmingham boss Alex McLeish rather quickly. His side are still precariously teetering over the relegation zone and have far from avoided the drop.

The Blues currently sit in 16th in the Premier League, just 2 points above 18th place Wolves. On the back of the Carling Cup euphoria, with two games in hand on those around them and double Gameweek fixtures against West Brom and Everton, Birmingham will look to take advantage and attempt to stave off relegation. Being so tight in the middle of the league, just 7 points separate themselves and 7th placed Bolton, City’s fans could even be dreaming of a top half finish.

The defeat of Arsenal and this double Gameweek has given Fantasy Managers much to consider, as we revisit Birmingham’s low-priced Fantasy potential.

The Prospects

The Blues have scored the fewest goals in the Premier League this season, just 25, so don’t ask for your money back if Nikola Zigic doesn’t produce a hat-trick. But they slightly make up for their attacking frailties with a somewhat tougher defensive record, conceding a acceptable 35 this term.

McLeish and co welcome West Brom to the Second City, for the opener of the double. It’s on home soil where Birmingham have performed best this season in the Premier League, winning 19 of their 30 points. But they have drawn 7 of their 14 games in front of the St Andrews faithful, a statistic that they’ll be hoping to improve upon against the Baggies.

The Baggies haven’t got off to the start they may have imagined since Roy Hodgson took over, drawing their last three fixtures. Indeed, they’ve only won once in their last 12 Premier League outings. West Brom have managed just a couple of wins on the road this season and have conceded an almighty 30 goals in the process. McLeish will certainly see this as points lost if his side fail to earn the victory.

Birmingham clearly find points harder to come by on their travels, and Goodison Park is proving to be somewhat of a fortress as of late; Everton have won 2 and drawn 3 of their last five games there. However, McLeish’s men will surely look to capitalise on the Toffees’ loss of confidence after they suffered a humiliating defeat to Reading in the FA Cup. A draw would certainly suffice here, but don’t write the Blues off from stealing an unlikely win.

The Likely Lads

Many Fantasy Managers will be feeling the effects of Robin Van Persie’s latest injury. With Birmingham striker Nikola Zigic being granted double the chances this gameweek and 3 goals in his last four Premier League games, the RVP void could be filled with by the giant from Serbia. Valued at just 5.3 on the FPL game, he could free up some funds for other areas in your team.

England goalkeeper Ben Foster is a solid pick between the posts. The Birmingham defence have found some form recently which has seen Foster keep 2 clean sheets in his last three outings. Priced at 5.2 on the FPL game, he is certainly worth a punt and with an ownership of 23.8%, his potential is hardly going unnoticed.

Elsewhere in the defence, Roger Johnson is the most obvious choice. The centre-back hasn’t missed a minute of Premier League action for the Blues, chipping in with 2 goals, an assist and 14 bonus points in the process. Johnson has apparently shaken off the effects of calf and knee injuries sustained in Sunday’s Wembley final and would seem set to start both games.

Martin Jiranek is an alternative, he gives you a cheaper option in the Birmingham defence at 4.5 and is a ‘differential’ with just 0.01% ownership. Although yet to catch the eyes of the FPL bonus judges, the Czech international has put in some highly praised performances.

Craig Gardner offers the most attacking threat from a Birmingham midfield lacking much Fantasy excitement, having contributed 5 goals. Gardner is regarded as an injury doubt going into the weekend, as is Barry Ferguson. The Scot is a steady choice for the Blues and continues to mop up the bonus points, collecting 21 so far this season – he rarely threatens to score more than 6 points however, so his selection is a conservative measure and a risk given the latest injury news from St Andrews. David Bentley, set to be recalled after being ineligible for the Carling Final, could well be the most secure option within the Birmingham midfield.

Cheeky Punt

Carling Cup hero Obafemi Martins could be worth a gamble. Although the Nigerian international has only featured twice in the Premier League for Birmingham, he has proven experience from his time with Newcastle. He will be in high spirits after his last minute winner against Arsenal and at 5.3 in the game he could turn out to be an FPL bargain.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Could someone look at my team please and tell me if they think I should play my remaining Wildcard this week or just take hits? Thinking the DGW could be the time to unleash my WC?

You serious? You have 5 or 6 players who are out/doubt/crap and you want to take hits when you are one of the very few still with a wc?

Yeah but have little time to put a WC team together and don't want to waste it. Need time to think and also got lots of good players injured, like Fabs RVP etc.

Holding the WC until the DGW could result in a boatload of additional points that would far exceed the points from the hits. If you're trying to make up a significant point difference and your opponents don't have a WC, this reinforces waiting until GW33.

        That's probably logical.

But, I just feel Arteta could easily outscore Nasri.

Lampard could also go wild against Blackpool.

And, Saha could also do well on DGW.

im sure we'd agree arteta looks safe to outscore young for the GW, but are you thrilled about the prosepect of holding on th arteta for any length. I feel an average DGWer loses value if a transfer has to be used to get him out the next week or two. Are you ready to remain patient through Evertons fixture run to GW33 if arteta disappoints this GW?

The problem I am having with a cheap replacement for RVP is that I'll spend the money on MF instead.

That then leaves a problem when I want to get a big hitter striker back in. I have Tevez and Bent and if I get Saha I'll end up going for Lamps. That wipes me out so no I have to make multiple changes next gw to get people like VdV and Rooney.

RVP to Torres makes more sense for me because its a simple move next week to get Rooney in for Torres.

I like doing a DGW captain. Even if Tevez gets a good haul, your DGW captain having a game to come gives you some hope (even if it's ultimately disappointing).

Captaining Tevez and getting 2 doubling to 4 leaves you mardy for a while.

Mostly because of the DGW imo, but also because if you have other problems there is no pressure to sell him with the fixtures they have.

    Bl00dy great I have:

Vidic, Adam, VDV, Kelly all out AND Barton a doubt.

Who do I swap out for a 4 point hit?

Vidic > Baines (already have Coleman)
    Kelly > R Johnson
VDV > Arteta (he must be due a good week, with Fell/Cahill out)

They all sound pretty good - just need to decide whether to go 4 or 8 point hit!

Ok then if 8 pt hit - which 2 of the 3 options?
Doubling up on Everton defence seems risky. So that leaves:
          Kelly > R Johnson
          VDV > Arteta

1& 2 probably safer options, but 1 & 3 probably has greater potential. I do worry about Arteta not having scored big all season

    hi all

My internet is down, doing this from phone would appreciate thoughts on changes to do to following. At moment am thinking cahill > nasri

    Foster (begovic)
    Kelly huth kolarov johnson coleman
    Young adam nani barton cahill
    Tevez rvp odem

I've got nearly exactly same team except lennon for cahill and vidic for johnson.

Think i'm goin Nasri for Barton and Saha - RVP. Trying to resist lure of a DGW, but i need 2 transfers to put 11 out.

It looks OK,1 TF will leave you needing all the rest to put in full shift. Don't forget to take your Birm players off the bench. 🙂

lemme rephrase this for everyone....try your best to picture the scenario and answer honestly.

lets say you buy arteta and he gets you less than 10 points this GW, lets say just four for minutes played, three for an assist, and a BP. 8 points

will you still feel confident holding on to him for the next five gameweeks?

its one thing to bring a player in whos in form, does little that first week you bring him in, you still feel confident about potential. but if you bring in arteta and he does phuck all, well now what? besides the obligatory smacking of one's own head muttering "I should have known, the bastard hasnt done shite all season"

Yes, it falls under you're last comment, but if rest ofcteam in ok shape he does have good fixtures so would be tempted to hold and keep muttering!

Every player to a greater or lesser degree is a risk. Arteta has a good double gameweek, he has been looking better recently (though still a long way from the player he was last season).
I got him in last week, he's already got me 6 points, I'm happy with the gamble.

Confidence means alot to a player. He isn't the same force FPL wise atm but could pick up. Players like Adam, VDV & co will be his replacement if he goes back to low scores.

The only players i would potentially captain him over the ones you have are Tevez and Baines. Think im still going for Tevez. I personally think Brum will struggle this GW.

Hi all. Would appreciate any opinions:

    Szczeney (Robinson)
    Huth RJohnson Coleman (Vidic, Kelly)
    Nani Brunt Cahill VdV Barton
    RVP Tevez Odemwingie

Quite a few injuries! I'm thinking Cahill to Nasri and RVP to Saha. That will give me 10 definites plus Barton/VdV as possibles

Is it also worth taking an 8 point hit to do VdV to Arteta/Young too?

Right... sod it, team for GW29:

    Foster (Begovic)
    Coleman Kolarov Djourou
    Bentley Nani Nasri Young
    Saha Rooney Tevez

    Bench: VDV Simpson Kelly

Although Rooney is odds on to at the very least pick up a yellow card, I hope he bursts the net a couple of times. I just hope he doesn't get sent off, which is very very plausible.
