Great Expectations – Stephane Sessegnon

Sunderland’s striker crisis at the tail-end of last season look to put their top flight status under threat – ultimately however, it helped unearth a gem. Steve Bruce shifted Stephane Sessegnon from a peripheral role in the Black Cat’s squad to a central figure as a makeshift forward; the Benin international responded with 3 goals in the final 5 games to kill-off the relegation talk.

Fantasy Managers pushing for the final furlong were quickly alerted to Sessegnon’s merits as an “out-of-position” signing. Classified as a midfielder in the low-to-mid price bracket, he represented strong value for those willing to take a gamble on an inconsistent and often misfiring Sunderland side.

This season things could be different. Bruce has manoeuvred effectively in the transfer market to bring in established Premier League talent in defence and midfield – his attacking players should be in line to benefit.

Sessegnon is very much part of the masterplan. Bruce has made it clear that his form at the end of the season demonstrated the player’s ability as a striker, or at least in the role playing off a central striker.

“Sess has come back and he’s in good shape which gives us hope…We’ll look to keep him there [up front] because I always think that’s his best position. It suits Sess and it suits the team and I’m very pleased with what I’ve seen of him.”

It’s clear that Sessegnon will start the season in a striker’s role and 3 goals in pre-season has already offered a timely reminder of his talent. Classed as a Fantasy midfielder, the appeal is obvious and, despite a tough opening day encounter at Anfield, Sessegnon looks set to find himself in many initial Fantasy squads.

Key Factors

  • Sessegnon is classed as a mid-price midfielder across the Fantasy games (6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League) and yet proved extremely effective when playing in the striker role last season. Although a desperate measure on the part of Steve Bruce, he would have been impressed at the player’s ability to lead the attack and prove a menace to opposing defences. Three goals in five games also helped demonstrate his effectiveness as an out and out striker. Bruce has already stated that he will look to keep him in this position and Seessegnon has justified that faith in pre-season already with another run of goals.

  • New signings Ji Dong-Won and Conor Wickham may offer Asamoah Gyan competition up front but, while Gyan is a proven Premier League talent, the latter are young flourishing prospects, unproven at the top level. Sessegnon is being earmarked for the role playing off the striker in a slighter deeper, “in the hole” role. Should Bruce look to blood Wickham or Dong-Won, it would seem more likely that it will Gyan’s pitch time which takes the hit.

  • Sunderland’s opening spell of the season offers hope of early attacking returns. Home encounters with Newcastle, Stoke and West Brom should bring profit, whilst away trips to Swansea and Norwich also carry potential. All those games arrive in the opening seven Gameweeks.

  • Although Jordan Henderson has left the club, Bruce has arguably invested well in midfield areas. The arrival of David Vaughan should add stability and the odd spark, whilst Craig Gardner and Seb Larsson have the ability to contribute attacking verve and, in Larsson’s case, excellent delivery. Sunderland should produce more chances this season and Sessegnon may benefit.

  • Sessegnon could well depart for the African Cup of Nations in January, Benin seem unlikely to make progress through to the latter stages. They may well be eliminated at the group stage which would presumably see Sessegnon miss just a handful of Premier League outings.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

This team has been doing my head in so I'd really really appreciate if you guys could give a frank, brutal, honest assessment!

    Al Habsi, de Vries

    Cole, Kompany, Collins, Briggs, Simpson

    Malouda, Silva, Downing, Albrighton, Moses

    Bent, Suarez, Graham

    Thanking you all in advance!!!

Maybe swap Collins for someone else and bring Given in for Villa cover, also not sure whether Briggs will start.
Same issue with Downing, could bring taarabt in for him. With this extra money you could then upgrade bent to a RVP/Rooney or get someone else instead of Graham.

        Collins-Bardsley?
        de Vries-Given?
Pretty sure Downing will start no? Maybe Downing-Sinclair?
Leaving me bang on for Graham-Zamora?

        What you reckon?

          Collins > Bramble
          DeVries > Given
          Downing > Sinclair/Taraabt
          Graham > Zamora.

However this is only my opinion so if you want to stick with Downing stay with him!

Exactly. Which is why Im wondering is Yaya even worth the selection. Because most of the points are going to be roped in by the forwards.

So its either Aguero/Tevez and no Yaya/Silva?

Which soul has around a 'Aldi' budget defence that can be rotated well?

I'm curious because last season I started the game with that idea. For some reason I had an inherent dislike of paying for a high priced defender. Until, it was pointed out to me that approaching Christmas, Cole had racked up (in the region of ) as many points the same as Tevez.

Merely using Cole as an example, not saying he'll rake in as many this season.

Kenny is a better choice over Al-Habsi for future rotation.

Don't like Distin at all, or Vidic for that matter.

Jarvis is an interesting choice, but most likely a poor one. Midfield is good on the whole. Silva is almost certainly a better choice than Nasri.

Up front you're weak. Very weak. Hulse is not a good budget choice. Holt at best. Berbatov is a really poor choice considering fixtures and starting potential. Bent is good, but unspectacular, and you want someone who will explode early on for captaincy.

From the same source: "John Arne Riise made his debut for Fulham on Thursday evening, lining-up at left-back for the visit of Crusaders. Riise’s inclusion in the starting eleven meant that Matthew Briggs was moved forward into a left-wing role – a position which he filled admirably.

It was Briggs who played a part in Fulham’s first attempt on target, creating an opportunity for Andrew Johnson on seven minutes, whose shot was well held by Sean O’Neill in the Crusaders goal." ...

It would be better for Briggs to be holding the left back slot right now.

If Riise is playing left wing, there's a very slight chance of him keeping Dempsey out of the side. If Briggs is playing left mid, he's got no chance at all.

He's not likely to be so prosperous with Suarez & Carrol on the pitch. Too many mids at Liv though I suppose with stevie out he could be worth a punt. Still for 10mil you can have Suarez up front for Liv cover and take advantage of value else where in the market.

I think that there is better value in the promoted teams as far as a second keeper goes, and isn't there an outside chance Sorenson still has something to say on number 1 spot having played well in FA Cup last year, I suppose we will find out with Stoke in Europa.

I had Rafael in one of my earlier drafts, but with Jones now being used at RB, and Fabio always there there abouts, I don't fancy Rafael even at 5.5, Gibbs at Arsenal is a better option and personally I think you should look to using the money saved on Begovic OUT newly promoted keeper IN to upgrade Rafael to a top 4 defender.

Midfield is the business, mine is the same bar O'Hara, I have Moses instead.

Rooney I am going back and forward on, is in great form, looking very confident, but who knows if he will be banging in the goals or merely facilitating as he tended to do towards the end of the last season. Suarez is a doubt for the season start and I would prefer Bent, Zamora is a good option, I have gone with Rodallega.

Good team, defence could do with a slight upgrade.

not sure, still plenty of tweeking when team news becomes more apparement and transfer window comes to a close. yossi might be good chelsea coverage/value, also debating silva instead of malouda and then play bent if suarez not nailed to play and downing in place of nzog.

Kompany over Huth surely. Stoke's opening games are terrible.

Not a big fan of Hughes either since he doesn't offer anything besides clean sheets and even those are uncertain with Jol's attacking football.

Rest of the team is good, I like it. Maybe switch VDV after GW1 for Malouda due to Spurs' terrible fixtures and Chelsea's excellent ones.

Kompany scored less last season because he was mis-classed.

Also, you pick defenders for defensive points first, and goals second. Clean sheets are predictable, defenders' goals are not.

Obviously attacking points are a bonus, but predictability is one of the most valuable assets a player can have in FPL.

other strikers are suarez and bent. Midfield looking healthy with downing and VDV already in the ranks. Defence built of lots of quality points/pound ration players...

In fairness, Rafael had two hamstring injuries in close succession along with a concussion during that stretch where Fabio started. That might have led to Fabio's elevation over Raf.

Still an open question, I admit, but I'd favor Rafael if basing on the pre-season games.

The chat always was that Fabio was the better player of the two. Rafael got into the team 1st because rubber man Evra is never injured. Now they are both competing for the RB it's anyone's guess. One thing i do know is that neither of them play 3 games in a row without getting injured.

Im not so sure Luiz will be a starter. just from following the pre-season (for what its worth) unlike Luiz, Ivanovic has started every game and is only .5 more. I put him in instead but of course the few games before the 1st prem game will be more telling. I hope you're right as i'd love the extra .5 to play with

If Luiz isn't starting in the lead-up or his place isn't assured, I'll just downgrade all the way. It's not worth paying more than 6.5 for a defender so early on in the season.

Members: Can anyone tell me if a member's FPL league has been created? I'm a paid-up soldier in the FFS army now, and would like to join.

    Thanks.
