Great Expectations – Stephane Sessegnon

Sunderland’s striker crisis at the tail-end of last season look to put their top flight status under threat – ultimately however, it helped unearth a gem. Steve Bruce shifted Stephane Sessegnon from a peripheral role in the Black Cat’s squad to a central figure as a makeshift forward; the Benin international responded with 3 goals in the final 5 games to kill-off the relegation talk.

Fantasy Managers pushing for the final furlong were quickly alerted to Sessegnon’s merits as an “out-of-position” signing. Classified as a midfielder in the low-to-mid price bracket, he represented strong value for those willing to take a gamble on an inconsistent and often misfiring Sunderland side.

This season things could be different. Bruce has manoeuvred effectively in the transfer market to bring in established Premier League talent in defence and midfield – his attacking players should be in line to benefit.

Sessegnon is very much part of the masterplan. Bruce has made it clear that his form at the end of the season demonstrated the player’s ability as a striker, or at least in the role playing off a central striker.

“Sess has come back and he’s in good shape which gives us hope…We’ll look to keep him there [up front] because I always think that’s his best position. It suits Sess and it suits the team and I’m very pleased with what I’ve seen of him.”

It’s clear that Sessegnon will start the season in a striker’s role and 3 goals in pre-season has already offered a timely reminder of his talent. Classed as a Fantasy midfielder, the appeal is obvious and, despite a tough opening day encounter at Anfield, Sessegnon looks set to find himself in many initial Fantasy squads.

Key Factors

  • Sessegnon is classed as a mid-price midfielder across the Fantasy games (6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League) and yet proved extremely effective when playing in the striker role last season. Although a desperate measure on the part of Steve Bruce, he would have been impressed at the player’s ability to lead the attack and prove a menace to opposing defences. Three goals in five games also helped demonstrate his effectiveness as an out and out striker. Bruce has already stated that he will look to keep him in this position and Seessegnon has justified that faith in pre-season already with another run of goals.

  • New signings Ji Dong-Won and Conor Wickham may offer Asamoah Gyan competition up front but, while Gyan is a proven Premier League talent, the latter are young flourishing prospects, unproven at the top level. Sessegnon is being earmarked for the role playing off the striker in a slighter deeper, “in the hole” role. Should Bruce look to blood Wickham or Dong-Won, it would seem more likely that it will Gyan’s pitch time which takes the hit.

  • Sunderland’s opening spell of the season offers hope of early attacking returns. Home encounters with Newcastle, Stoke and West Brom should bring profit, whilst away trips to Swansea and Norwich also carry potential. All those games arrive in the opening seven Gameweeks.

  • Although Jordan Henderson has left the club, Bruce has arguably invested well in midfield areas. The arrival of David Vaughan should add stability and the odd spark, whilst Craig Gardner and Seb Larsson have the ability to contribute attacking verve and, in Larsson’s case, excellent delivery. Sunderland should produce more chances this season and Sessegnon may benefit.

  • Sessegnon could well depart for the African Cup of Nations in January, Benin seem unlikely to make progress through to the latter stages. They may well be eliminated at the group stage which would presumably see Sessegnon miss just a handful of Premier League outings.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I don't know much about him (Aguero) but Tevez' record for goals and assists as a percentage of total City goals is pretty impressive.

I'd have to opt for worse.

Have to go with 'worse' - simply as Aguero is an unknown PL quantity at this point.

But I also picked up Dzeko last year for his first game, so I clearly have no clue.

I say he'll be a success. Tevez seemingly was Man City for the last two years - if he failed they failed, and if he did his thing they flew.

I think Aguero will be at the forefront, and succeed very well, of a whole team. Not sure it'll be easy to compare them like for like for me - but he'll be damn good.

Not having any Chelsea coverage for their first run of games will hurt you I think. Maybe leave some cash in the back to upgrade VDV to Malouda after GW1, or find a way to fit in a Chelsea defender.

Mikel.. no way - he is fantasy poison. Benayoun would be a better gamble is you have the cash.

I have Rooney right now (but that may change) - too much rotation risk right now. Maybe wait for the season to start before deciding...

I have Rooney at the moment as well (might go the RVP though), but I don't see him as rotation risk. Going by last season, even during his early season slump, Sir Alex rotated Chichirito and Berbs around Rooney.

Here's a new approach for planning your team early, well it's what I'm doing anyway

    5.0, 4.5
    6.0, 8.0, 5.5, 4.0, 4.0
    10.5, 7.5, 6.5, 5.0, 4.5
    12.0, 10.0, 7.0

Fill in the players to suit when things are more clear nearer the season.

    For example -

12.0 striker Tevez, Rooney, RVP, Torres
10.0 striker Suarez, Bent, Carroll, Gervinho
7.0 Striker Zamora, BA, Sturridge, Rodallega

10.5 Striker VDV, Malouda, Silva, Downing, Nani, Nasri etc.

Go for a strong GW1 side on fixtures and then use transfers to adapt to AVB, SAF, KD, AW etc. regular starters and get on them and any other form players/bargins.

They will be bit part players, Moses looks a decent shout, there will be a few 90 minute scarecrows from the promoted sides for 4.5.

As I mentioned it's just a format until more information becomes available nearer the start of the season as I see RMT's as totally pointless at this stage.

    Given / Ruddy

    A.Cole / Kompany / Rafael / Gibbs / Briggs

    YaYa / Taarbat / Albrighton / Arteta / Benayoun

    Suarez / Bent / Zamora

    its balanced beautifully.

    - I dont wanna hear it about Rafael and Gibbs. They are both 1st XI players for their teams.

    - Briggs gets good on footy manager and hes cheap.

    - Arteta is a gamble. (Swap with Bale if he doesnt do the job)

    - Benayoun WILL play in Chelseas first few games.

How so. Suarez is the nuts. Bent, dont ask me how but he does, scores goals and Zamora is a nice middle of the road 3rd attacker.

        Could then ask...

Artea & Bent or Rooney & Barton or Brunt...?!

      It needs work.

You do know you have to bench two players right? That's a lot of wasted money on the bench when you could be getting captaincy material.

Downgrade Gibbs and Rafael, Upgrade your midfield in every slot except one which should be downgraded to a 4.5 bench sitter.

My tactic is have 15 starting players. I see all my players getting serious minutes. Not goin to waste all that money on Lampard and Nanis. Silva is the most expensive midfielder I would have.

3 but I'm assuming Briggs doesn't see the light of day.

Trust me though, this tactic doesn't work. You'll be very far behind before your greater squad depth works to your advantage.

            Captaincy is everything.

            Lampard + Dyer + Moses

            VS

            Benayoun + Yaya + Taarabt

You have to bench one and captain one.

            Let's say the scores went:

            Lampard - 16
            Moses - 2
            Dyer - 1

            Benayoun - 6
            Toure - 8
            Taarabt - 6

Team one with Dyer benched permanently would score 34 points this week

            vs.

Team two who would score 24 points in a best case scenario. This happens every week. Who's going to come out on top?

    Team so far

    Given/Kenny
    Ash Cole/Kompany/Bramble/Simpson/M.Kelly
    N'Zogs/Silva/Taarabt/Sinclair/Moses
    RVP/Suarez/Bobby Z

However after reading the above i want Sessegnon, been in and out since i started changing the team but decided i definitely want him now! Get rid of Sinclair?

Also, will Kelly start? Kinda hoping Liverpool sign Enrique.....if that doesn't happen who's a decent choice? Wish i could downgrade Cole but i don't even know who'll be Chelseas back 4.

Pretty happy with the strikers but if Suarez doesn't play the first couple of games i'll go for Aguero/Bent

You think one article will make you want him in? Wait until all the other scout articles come out and your team will change again... they predict at least 10 super signings and usually only 3 or 4 come good

I'm actually glad they did this feature on Sessegnon so early. It means quite a few people will miss it.

He's one of the players with highest potential value in the game. In fact, he's probably one of only 3 players or so I've got nailed on in every draft of my team.

PSG have a bigger task than Man City did.

All Man City had to do was get amongst the top 6 in a league they were already in. PSG need to qualify for the Champions League, then challenge for it. Otherwise, they won't be able to keep signing players like Pastore.

Some one every one seems to have overlooked is the Blackburn signing Mauro Formica!!! He signed in the January transfer window for them but didnt get game time

He has played for Argentina this year and suddenly Steve Kean has decided to play him out of position up front in preseason and he has scored and also been noted as on form in the scout preseason guide

    http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/sport/football/9162181.TEAM__NEWS__Formica_starts_for_Rovers/

He is a potential dark horse for a big point scorer Blackburn playing alongside Roberts with the whole Kalinic situation wanting to leave.

At present Mauro Formica is not in the FPL but once he plays they will enter him as a budget midfielder no doubt. And playing oop means potential huge rewards for goals and assists!!! He is only 23 and Blackburn are in need of a striker so if they dont sign any one

    MAURO FORMICA is your man

    there I said it first

The big question for me is what team is AVB going to pick for the start of the season. There are some fairly decent priced fringe players (Luiz, Ivanovic, Bosingwa, Yossi, Sturridge) who if they start will be an absolute bargain.

Torres, Anelka and Drogba are all over-priced until we see who will start upfront.

Yet we all need Chelsea coverage. Cripes I wish I hadnt started picking my team so early into the season
