Fixtures

Frisking The Fixtures – Gameweek Three

Clearly our Fantasy season has yet to hit top gear. In truth we only just got out of reverse this weekend. The form guide is still, err forming, and early Fantasy bandwagons are just beginning to gather speed thanks to a handful of stand-out performances.

We’re still in the “early doors” stage but the fixture list should remain integral to our thinking. Our weekly examination of the schedule will remain relentless as we continue to help you assess the patterns of opponents to line up alongside the form guides as the season gradually takes shape.

The Highs…

West Brom

West Brom got through their devilish start against Man United and Chelsea with some credit, despite having zero points to show for their efforts. Luckily for Roy Hodgson, the fixture list now provides them with a run of games which should see them climb the table – in Fantasy terms, they look a team ripe for low-to-mid price investment.

The visit to the Stadium of Light in Gameweek 7 looks to be perhaps their most difficult proposition in a run that hands the Baggies meetings with Stoke, Norwich, Swansea and Fulham before the trip to the North East – a home local derby with Wolves then follows in Gameweek 8.

Shane Long has settled into the Premier League with goals against last season’s top two and will surely demand interest, while Peter Odemwingie made a return from injury with an appearance of the bench this weekend but could play second fiddle in Fantasy terms to the new arrival. Chris Brunt, with his set-piece monopoly, is the stand-out of the midfield option, while investment in Ben Foster could well increase over the coming weeks.

QPR

Neil Warnock picked his side up off the floor following on from their demoralising Gameweek one defeat to Bolton and lead his men to victory at Goodison Park. That result may have restored some faith amongst Fantasy managers, just in time for a continued run of favourable opponents for the Londoners.

Home fixtures against Newcastle, Villa and Blackburn won’t be easy necessarily, but if Rangers are to preserve their top flight status, these are games which they will surely target as winnable. Around these Loftus Road fixtures, trips to Wigan, Wolves and neighbours Fulham could also provide a platform for points with Adel Taarabt perhaps handed the opportunity to show his potential for Fantasy returns.

Newcastle

The Magpies have made an encouraging start, having kept two consecutive clean sheets over a pair of decidedly testing fixtures. Looking ahead they will have confidence that they can maintain the run, with a set of five matches which hands them further opportunity to impress.

Alan Pardew will be optimistic going into the weekend home meeting with Fulham and, following on from that, trips to QPR and Villa should be approached with a similar degree of confidence. A St James’ Park meeting with Blackburn then follows, before a Gameweek 7 trip to Wolves.

The clean sheets have seen Steven Taylor and Danny Simpson stand-out as defensive options, while Yohann Cabaye looks a solid investment target in midfield areas. Confidence in the Newcastle attack however, remains limited as Pardew continues his quest for firepower.

Aston Villa

Villa passed the test of a first home match with relative ease and Alex McLeish already looks to have shrugged the monkey from his back when it comes to acceptance from the Villa faithful. His side continue to enjoy a favourable run of games with home fixtures in particular looking profitable sources.

While Wolves will provide a stern test this weekend, home comforts against Newcastle and Wigan follow on, while trips to Everton and QPR certainly won’t intimidate if McLeish can keep his troops unbeaten.

Darren Bent is an expensive option nowadays but does what you pay him to do – he scores goals. Charles N’Zogbia has yet to sparkle in any great shape but offers the cheaper midfield option while defensive figures from Shay Given to James Collins are all worthy of consideration. Gabriel Agbonlahor is perhaps the left-field option here. Handed a new role on the left-flank, right now he appears to be in bloom and, with a significant drop in price this term based on a disappointing 2010/11 season, he could hold some value.

Also Consider…

Wolves – a lofty league placing is compounded by a continued run of decent fixtures which includes three home games in four from Gameweek 4 onwards.

Chelsea – Home fixtures with Norwich and Swansea promise heavy attacking returns, despite concerns that Andre Villas-Boas is struggling with his attacking formula.

Fulham – Martin Jol’s side have made a shaky start but have the opportunity to revive themselves with home fixtures against Blackburn and QPR on the way.

The Lows…

Man United

Alex Ferguson’s side will get a tough home encounter with Spurs out of the way tonight but still face an unenviable run off matches which will test their ability to keep pace with neighbours City.

Now looks a good time to face a beleaguered Arsenal but this weekend’s clash is just the start of a run which has them travel to Bolton and Stoke – two of the most difficult away trips of the season outside of the “big five”. A potentially crucial meet with Chelsea in Gameweek 5 is sandwiched in between.

With these fixtures and defensive injuries, clean sheets look scarce, so any Fantasy investment will surely be targeted at attacking players. Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young and Nani will remain popular then, although they will have to prove their fixture-proof credentials if they are to repay the faith.

Bolton

The Trotters clearly have goals in them but keeping them out at the other end looks a major concern. The fixture list suggests that the first Bolton clean sheet could still be weeks away with the home clash with Norwich in Gameweek 5 their only real positive match-up to come.

The trip to Anfield this weekend looks a daunting one, the visit of United after the international break similarly testing. Then, following the Reebok meet with the Canaries, there’s a trip to Arsenal and a home meet with Chelsea.

The 39% of Gary Cahill owners will either need a lot of fortune or will likely be reconsidering their investment after hopping on that bandwagon following Gameweek one’s handsome return.

Blackburn

Rovers are in a bit of a pickle. Tipped by half of the Scout team to be the first manager for the chop, Steven Kean already looks vulnerable and isn’t about to get any help from the Rovers schedule.

Drop points against Everton this weekend and Blackburn will go to Fulham before facing Arsenal at Ewood – right now you’d expect Rovers to struggle in both those games, with their opponents looking to turn the tide after stalled starts. A trip to Newcastle then leads into a home clash with City, who appear to be intent on steamrolling opponents with goals. Kean’s side don’t appear to have too much to offer in resistance right now.

Be Wary of…

Spurs – Home games against City, Liverpool and Arsenal seems likely to limit defensive returns and test the ability of Rafael Van der Vaart and company to breach the most rigid away defences.

Norwich – Their away games look potentially crippling, putting huge pressure on the Carrow Road clashes with West Brom and Sunderland to come.

Everton – David Moyes’ side need to recover from the QPR defeat quickly. Good short term fixtures will soon give way to a testing run from Gameweek 6 onwards.

Stick with Downing, get rid of Torres, Surman and Saha. Bring in Brunt, Dzeko and Odemwingie. Thats what I'd do in your position. Does that add up though...?

                well i think it's stupid

                (a) zero chance of it happening unless the other powerful leagues also get 6 places

                (b) the more teams concentrate on Europe the more the FA Cup and League Cup will be devalued

                (c) but the bigger danger is that teams will stop caring about the Premier League title...you'll get loads of fringe players playing in the league as squads get rotated to death

                (d) and once you get 6 teams why not 8 or 10...pretty soon you get a massive Euro League (for which there is no demand in England) and English club football is destroyed for the Blackburn's, Burnley's, Brighton's and many others

                (e) extra money will not magically materialise...in fact the Champions League will be devalued...when I was a kid I was SO EXCITED even to listen to a European Cup game on the radio...now I don't even bother watching the endlessly boring Champions League group matches...all your plan will do is worsen the situation

                (f) so let all the Spurs fans sign this...nobody else should bother

                (g) what we really need is to go back to a one team per country in the top competition...then the Euro Cup would be a great competition as the EUFA Cup used to be

(this will never happen of course but you guys are just plain WRONG!!!)

"mate football is more exciting now cos theres more money"...how old are you?....remember when Forest, Derby and Ipswich had a chance to win?...the same clubs are at the top every year...even when a billionaire took over Newcastle he quickly realised he was putting his entire fortune at risk...it is NOT more exciting

but the standard of play is MUCH higher...maybe the very best players in the world won't come to England but the players just slightly below that will...but these players come to England mainly because the pay is great...they'd rather be in the sun diving if they get touched on the shoulder than mixing it with Joey Barton...but Athletico Madrid (say) just can't pay the wages

i think you're confusing the standard of play with whether the league is exciting (it isn't)

English clubs can afford these players because the league is strong so TV pays for it

your masterplan seems to be to stick Stoke and Fulham into an expanded Champions League?...how exactly will football benefit?

just as a matter of interest would you not think the competitiveness of the english league would be diminished by allowing the top 6 (of whom will 99% of the time be utd, arsenal, city, chelsea, spurs and EVERTON!) into the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE every year.

how is that fair? The original objective of the european cup/champions league was for rewarding the champions of each league to play in europe.

If your thwarted ignorant petition did ever get going (highly unlikely) and was successful (........ha!......) you would be reinvigorating the already money dominated egotistical system that UEFA/FIFA operate by.

All the wealthiest teams will get in and in the end the teams on the brink, such as 'Liverpool'! will fall further behind.

In 5- 10 years time Russian teams could attract far more top players than English teams imo if trends keep going the way they are.

Would you be willing to allow Dinamo OilWellsky and 7 other russian teams a place instead of English teams.

Ill tell you what was unfair: Russia being awarded the world cup instead of England? wheres your petition about that mate?

Just because Pool aren't in the Champ League for the last few years doesnt mean you have to assume they are being mistreated.

Also well done for not swearing. Easy?

maxi is catchy enough mate! Lave it at that! For my tuppence Liverpool have a great chance of making top 4 this year if they stay fit.
this could also benefit a team like arsenal who will be forced to invest in players.

Just dont waste your time on a petition that wont work. Trust me

    This is my team now.

    Given / Vorm
    Bosingwa / Distin / DeLaet / Brown / Lescott
    Silva / Moses / N’Zogbia / Ramsey / Ferguson
    Torres / Rooney / Suarez

What do you guys think of Lescott –> Enrique this week and possibly N’Zogbia –> Adam or a Torres switch next week? One thing at the time what about Lescott –> Enrique?

      Man United to win 1.62

Crazy record at OT last season, crazy record against Spurs. If you don't win you have the consolation that Man U have dropped points. I've also bet on Wayne Rooney anytime goalscorer as I am the only person in the world that doesn't have him in their team and this may soften the blow.

just looked at bps and i only watched liverpool game , wolves game and man citys game.
and i agree with 2 of liverpool i would of swapped henderson and suarez around henderson and adam were class.
wolves i thought johnson and berra were second half warriors and but hunt and doyle were pains for fulham and never stopped stretching them so they seem fair.
man city game was close calls i thought m.davies looked great when he came on and also eagles was class and i might of slippled him a point, and i thought milner was motm with silva just behind but maybe the goal tipped it. what was the others game like i only saw motd and not even sir alex cause give them off that

it depends on who uses it and what context it is said in. The word Yid (play /ˈjiːd/; Yiddish: ייִד)[clarification needed] is a slang Jewish ethnonym. Its usage may be controversial in modern English language. It is not usually considered offensive when pronounced /ˈjiːd/ (rhyming with deed), the way Yiddish speakers say it, though some may deem the word offensive nonetheless. When pronounced /ˈjɪd/ (rhyming with did), it can generally be perceived as a pejorative—and is used as a derogatory epithet by antisemites.[1]

its a bit like being called a jock. personally i dont like it. i take it as a bit of a slant on scottish people but i know lots of people who say it in a friendly manner with no malice intended. much the same as yid. it depends on who is saying it, the context and how it is said.

Yes it is, I once commented "So the campaigns didn't work..." to someone who was a Spurs fan and said "Come on the Yid army", it was and is used as an insult to Jewish people but the Spurs fans took it on board to try and devalue the severity of the insult (by calling themselves it as they have a large Jewish following), really though, it shouldn't be used at all. As bad as the 'n' word for black people imo, I suppose when used as an insult it should be condemned but you can't stop people using it who are unaware of it's meaning and origns, its only a word after all and there are worse things in the world but its not pleasant.

Indeed. I believe as many Tottenham fans are Jewish it is used to describe them. They have adopted it as a name for themselves -"Yid Army", perhaps to defuse the anti religious overtones.

saha being benched was weird and i'd worry as an owner. you could play alex (should start or not play at all) then deal with him next gw i suppose

He was benched because he didn't train fully during the week. He looks OK now, should train this week and be starting next w/e. I'd keep him.

ah, it did seem fishy. at one point he took beckford off and brought fellaini on so it was cahill and fellaini up front with saha on the bench.

LASK are currently 1-0 down after 15 mins, I expected them to win this easily and are currently priced @ 17/10. Great price if anyone interested.

When will player prices go up? Would it be sensible to transfer in Suarez and out Torres as early as now to avoid a price rise?

I've seen a similar question asked regarding Bent for Suarez - but I want to bring Suarez in for Torres.

Should I persist with Torres one more week (may even captain him), or get rid for Suarez...

hehe, yeah I'm not convinced - they have a good fixture, Liverpool's is arguably tougher and Suarez only came on as a sub - but has delivered so much more and his price goes up tonight probably (possibly).

Made a post about Yaya earlier regarding him playing deeper but i had to pop out and it's too late to bother replying now (no one will answer). How long is De Jong out for an do people think he'll start playing a more forward role again? Worth keeping or not?

      imo No.

      De Jong will be back.

Barry actually had a good game too.

Yaya last season yes, with the price he is this season find an extra 1.5 for silva.
