Technical Area

The Technical Area- A Look at Nasri & Silva

While Edin Dzeko’s four goals stole the show in Man City’s incredible 5-1 win at White Hart Lane, Fantasy managers would have been very aware of one other significant aspect of yesterday’s game- David Silva’s failure to play a part in any one of the away side’s goals.

Silva had been a sensation in his side’s first two games of the season but three assists from Samir Nasri at Spurs has many a Fantasy manager wondering whether his returns will be reduced as a result of the Frenchman’s acquisition. A look at Silva’s chalkboards from City’s last two games suggests that, while there is a definite difference to his play in each game, it’s far from a negative one.

One aspect of Silva’s returns so far worth noting is he has yet to make an assist in any game so far this season; James Milner grabbed two assists in the game at Bolton and there wasn’t any fear of his returns being diminished after the game at the Reebok.

Two goals and, in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), four Bonus Points have come the playmaker’s way, so from a creative perspective, little has changed; a look at our Members Area shows Silva still had his fair share of key passes yesterday. Silva had four shots against Spurs, the same number as he had at home to Swansea and one more than he managed at Bolton in Gameweek 2.

Silva’s heat maps from the Bolton (above) and Tottenham (below) games, however, highlight how much more central he was in the opponent’s half yesterday compared to the game at the Reebok.

His passing heat maps again confirm that Silva played more through the middle and drifted wide far less- he made 70 passes against Owen Coyle’s side, with 49% of his passes coming from the wings. At Spurs, he saw almost as much of the ball, making 67 passes, with 35% of those played from the flanks- a significant drop.

Indeed, the heat maps merely back up the idea that Silva will continue to be at the heart of City’s play, dropping deep and orchestrating matters, while getting forward into dangerous areas much the same- the only real issue is how much more of a danger Nasri will be in comparison.

With Silva priced at 9.6 in FPL and Nasri 9.5, it’s a quandary that may only become apparent as the season unravels, though the fact that two of the latter’s assists came from out wide certainly boosts his appeal; Dzeko has shown that with quality service from the flanks, he’ll score plenty.

Nasri v Tottenham, Milner v Bolton

Nasri’s move to the Etihad Stadium certainly suggests he should be a stronger Fantasy prospect than he was at Arsenal last term. Incredibly, he picked up just one assist over the course of last season and has already tripled that tally in his City debut. When it comes to goal attempts, though, it’s worth noting that he had just two shots yesterday- half the number of shots as David Silva.

A comparison of Nasri’s passing with James Milner’s (in the same role) in the previous game is revealing. The number of passes each player made was almost identical -Nasri made 76 and Milner 74- but in terms of pass success, there was a substantial difference- Nasri made only 5 stray passes compared to Milner’s 17, as City kept possession far better with the Frenchman on board.

Taking it a step further, Nasri made just three unsuccessful passes in the Spurs half yesterday, all from corners; in open play, then, he didn’t give the ball away once in his opponent’s half. Milner, on the other hand, made sixteen unsuccessful passes in the Bolton half.

It backs up a quote from this article by Simon Kuper. Kuper paid a visit to Man City’s training ground and found that, just like Fantasy managers, the club pay a great deal of attention to player statistics. Gavin Fleig, City’s head of performance analysis, explained the line of thinking:

“The top four teams consistently have a higher percentage of pass completion in the final third of the pitch. Since the recruitment of Carlos Tévez, David Silva, Adam Johnson and Yaya Touré to our football team, in the last six months alone, our ability to keep the ball in the final third has grown by 7.7 per cent.”

In addition to excelling out wide, Nasri was prepared to drop deep and play central far more than Milner and his link-up play with Silva looked promising yesterday- he played 19 successful passes to Silva and received 15 successful passes in return from the Spaniard. Against Bolton, Silva played 12 passes to Milner and received just 10 back, more or less half Nasri’s tally- an indication the new boy is more on the same wavelength.

Clearly, City are a more cohesive and dangerous side with Nasri in the first XI. His addition to the City line-up makes Mancini’s side a much more dangerous team, with attacking moves far less likely to break down. With Dzeko and Serio Aguero both benefiting from his service, Spurs have already found out just how much of a difference he has made.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I just think Roons is so greatly in form now that most other players are in the shadows- no Tevez, RVP doesn't have a team (how is he going to get consistent bonuses), Suarez is in form and improving. Aguerro has the energy and talent. Dzeko reminds me of Berbs last year, inconsistent but huge occasional output.

Does anyone else think that it would be a good idea to have to pay £1 to enter FF with winner takes all?

£2.5 million would be pretty damn sweet - but if you got yourself high up early in the season you probably wouldnt have a decent nights sleep for six months sweating over transfers and captains picks.....

Anyone else on here old enough to have played FF before the internet?

Pretty sure I played the Telegraph one when I was at school in the early to mid 1990s

Had to wait until about Thursday after the weekend to check your player scores in the paper. Had to calculate your own team running team total as well and you had to POST in your transfers

However bad this site is at the moment, THAT was shit.

Bugger, no rises it looks like, very very frustrating after wildcarding to avoid players getting too expensive, and of course to try and make some money. This game just becomes more of an annoyance than an enjoyable experience, 2011-2012 might be better.

In the case of a business for example, if you do a major systems change you run the old one and the new one in parallel for a period of time in case the new one fails

Maybe it wasnt possible if another firm owned the IP rights or whatever, but they should have done this this year as well and we could have played this year on the original stable version and ironed out bugs on new version for next year when it turned out they'd coded a pile of horseshit!

I would be tempted, as you are at least 4 transfers behind where you would like to be. I would work out your starting 11 for the next 2-3 GWs and see how astrong it is before making the call. You might be able to catch up on the transfers with 1 or 2 hits over the next few weeks.

      Davies > Sturridge

Apparently AVB wants to bring him back pronto now that his suspension is over and Chelsea fixtures much better than Bolton for the next month or so

So who is the running favorite for captain next gameweek?

I currently have no idea who I'm going to captain. I have to choose between Silva, Nasri, Young, Walcott and Dzeko. I'm leaning towards Walcott due to his low ownership and decent fixture against Swansea but still I dunno, Dzeko is tempting with MC playing against Wigan and he is on form.

Not to be picky but it's a pet peeve of mine - don't pick based on ownership! Pick the guy you think will score best. If everyone has him anyway, so be it, if not then that's a bonus but it's not a criteria for picking in the first place. If you pick like that consistently you will have some good weeks but you will lose ground in the long run.

Man City big guns are all rotation risks

        So its Young v Walcott

Man City had 17 attempts away to Bolton and scored 3. No reason to think Man U can't do the same and Young looks like he has a great chance of being heavily involved

Will Arsenal do any better against a pretty solid Swansea side considering their confidence is shot and their two best creative players are gone? Doubt it

        So Young

Although in my mind the correct answer is rejig team and get Rooney

How can you not have the main striker in the highest scoring team in the league who is on penalties and hitting the target with nearly every free kick he hits........?

You could the same for all the big clubs in terms of rotation when European competitions come into play. Even Rooney may have a rest from time to time.

Shrek plays pretty much every game (and 90 minutes of every game) unless injured or suspended. Most rotation proof striker in the game

My rule after the shambolic first 2 GW scores is who ever wins the captains pole is definately not captain, worked a treat last week (Rooney). I would guess a man city player (more than likely to be Dzeko) will top the poll so go either Silva or Nasri. Young looking the goods also.

      I would not go Arsenal.

Good point, and the fact that this site now has a link from the offical site means a lot more traffic who has the ability to vote in the captains poll.

Why do you want to base your captain pick on what other people reckon though anyway?

I think this site is great for stats and the odd bit of inside info that supporters of specific teams can give you but if you're going to RMT, ask best transfers out of A, B & C, and go by captains poll then what are you actually doing yourself?

Surely this detracts from the achievement?

It does indeed, unfortunately I got sucked into the Torres love for GW2 after watching his "lively" performance v Stoke.

Perhaps what I meant is not clear? More "uneducated" traffic voting in the captains poll will result in the captains poll being less successful than in years past.

I get what you mean, but I just meant if you go by the FFS captain poll, two things can happen

                A) The poll pick does sh*t and you get annoyed at a load of other people influencing your decision

                B) The poll pick does well but you cant really feel the full reward because you just went with the masses

Live by the sword, die by the sword - screw the poll!

-1. An element of luck yes, but not mostly

That is like saying poker / horse betting etc is mostly luck but there are people that consistanly outperform

Obviously you cannot have every week your captain hauling a bucket load but if you know your forms and your fixtures then more often than not you will be getting a decent score from your captain

luck is a major factor I agree, but you can put yourself in a better position to be "lucky" with your captains picks. If you pick a form player at home versus a weak opponent you have a better chance of being lucky.

OUT - Jagielka, Kompany, Toure, N'Zogbia, Nani, Gyan, Bent, Suarez
IN - Ward, Boyce, Brunt, Silva, Adam, RVP, Rooney, Dzeko
NO CHANGE - Given, Vorm, De Laet, Simpson, Bosingwa, Jarvis, Moses

    Justified?

All last week people were posting 'fun facts' of how he was the highest goalscorer behind Tevez etc and now people can't get rid of him quick enough!

Speaking of Villa...Chris Herd?! I met him a month or so ago in a bar here in Perth, Australia, didn't even realise he was a first team player for Villa (He is like best friends with a few of my friends)!

Can't bring myself to get Walcott in. Him and Lennon are just pacey little whippets with minimal footballing ability and next to no vision. The way they bang crosses over without looking up and seeing the ball go into a big empty space really irks me as a player/coach. When was the last time you saw either of them curl one into the top corner from outside the box or even go close? The answer is never. They should both give thanks every day that they've played at this level.
