Technical Area

The Technical Area- A Look at Nasri & Silva

While Edin Dzeko’s four goals stole the show in Man City’s incredible 5-1 win at White Hart Lane, Fantasy managers would have been very aware of one other significant aspect of yesterday’s game- David Silva’s failure to play a part in any one of the away side’s goals.

Silva had been a sensation in his side’s first two games of the season but three assists from Samir Nasri at Spurs has many a Fantasy manager wondering whether his returns will be reduced as a result of the Frenchman’s acquisition. A look at Silva’s chalkboards from City’s last two games suggests that, while there is a definite difference to his play in each game, it’s far from a negative one.

One aspect of Silva’s returns so far worth noting is he has yet to make an assist in any game so far this season; James Milner grabbed two assists in the game at Bolton and there wasn’t any fear of his returns being diminished after the game at the Reebok.

Two goals and, in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), four Bonus Points have come the playmaker’s way, so from a creative perspective, little has changed; a look at our Members Area shows Silva still had his fair share of key passes yesterday. Silva had four shots against Spurs, the same number as he had at home to Swansea and one more than he managed at Bolton in Gameweek 2.

Silva’s heat maps from the Bolton (above) and Tottenham (below) games, however, highlight how much more central he was in the opponent’s half yesterday compared to the game at the Reebok.

His passing heat maps again confirm that Silva played more through the middle and drifted wide far less- he made 70 passes against Owen Coyle’s side, with 49% of his passes coming from the wings. At Spurs, he saw almost as much of the ball, making 67 passes, with 35% of those played from the flanks- a significant drop.

Indeed, the heat maps merely back up the idea that Silva will continue to be at the heart of City’s play, dropping deep and orchestrating matters, while getting forward into dangerous areas much the same- the only real issue is how much more of a danger Nasri will be in comparison.

With Silva priced at 9.6 in FPL and Nasri 9.5, it’s a quandary that may only become apparent as the season unravels, though the fact that two of the latter’s assists came from out wide certainly boosts his appeal; Dzeko has shown that with quality service from the flanks, he’ll score plenty.

Nasri v Tottenham, Milner v Bolton

Nasri’s move to the Etihad Stadium certainly suggests he should be a stronger Fantasy prospect than he was at Arsenal last term. Incredibly, he picked up just one assist over the course of last season and has already tripled that tally in his City debut. When it comes to goal attempts, though, it’s worth noting that he had just two shots yesterday- half the number of shots as David Silva.

A comparison of Nasri’s passing with James Milner’s (in the same role) in the previous game is revealing. The number of passes each player made was almost identical -Nasri made 76 and Milner 74- but in terms of pass success, there was a substantial difference- Nasri made only 5 stray passes compared to Milner’s 17, as City kept possession far better with the Frenchman on board.

Taking it a step further, Nasri made just three unsuccessful passes in the Spurs half yesterday, all from corners; in open play, then, he didn’t give the ball away once in his opponent’s half. Milner, on the other hand, made sixteen unsuccessful passes in the Bolton half.

It backs up a quote from this article by Simon Kuper. Kuper paid a visit to Man City’s training ground and found that, just like Fantasy managers, the club pay a great deal of attention to player statistics. Gavin Fleig, City’s head of performance analysis, explained the line of thinking:

“The top four teams consistently have a higher percentage of pass completion in the final third of the pitch. Since the recruitment of Carlos Tévez, David Silva, Adam Johnson and Yaya Touré to our football team, in the last six months alone, our ability to keep the ball in the final third has grown by 7.7 per cent.”

In addition to excelling out wide, Nasri was prepared to drop deep and play central far more than Milner and his link-up play with Silva looked promising yesterday- he played 19 successful passes to Silva and received 15 successful passes in return from the Spaniard. Against Bolton, Silva played 12 passes to Milner and received just 10 back, more or less half Nasri’s tally- an indication the new boy is more on the same wavelength.

Clearly, City are a more cohesive and dangerous side with Nasri in the first XI. His addition to the City line-up makes Mancini’s side a much more dangerous team, with attacking moves far less likely to break down. With Dzeko and Serio Aguero both benefiting from his service, Spurs have already found out just how much of a difference he has made.

    Need advice on this one....

I really want to put Young in my team longterm, I like him a lot. It would take an 8 point hit though, Sinclair or Brunt to Dyer and Sess to Young.

I've used my wildcard already. My team value is 100.9 so I've done well with rises. Should I just wait it out until after internationals and stomach Young's rise until after I get my free for the 4 pointer? Or just do it because Young/Dyer has the potential to outscore Sess/Sinclair next gameweek anyway.......

In a similar boat. Resisted the temptation yesterday; failed to resist temptation today and just sucked up the 8 point hit. He's going to go up in value so much that unless I do it now, I have no chance of getting him later. Of course, saying this I'm sure the prices will not rise tonight.

Yep, not only Dzeko may be a rotation risk, but he's got 2 internationals coming up. However, I've
decided that with his decent injury record and price rise that an early transfer was worth the risk (I am not a WCer).

The same can't be said for Walcott or RVP, though.

+1. There has been some ludicrous waste of money in recent times with the likes of Henderson and Carroll plus Torres of course. Liverpool are in a catch 22 because they have to play the likes of Henderson over Meireles simply because of money.

Over the course of the season each £1m is worth about 20-25 points. Based on that, if you lose £.2m by Young going up and Nani going down that will probably cost you 4 points over the season.

100 million budget = 2,000 - 2,500 points over the course of a season [total a decent team should end on]. Thus each 1 million quid should equate to around 20 to 25 points...

Exactly. Last season you could probably have made a team for around 90m that would have finished on over 2,000 points. Foster, Adam, Carroll etc.

Alright my fellow scouts. I'm off to Vegas here (neatly over the international break eh?!). I'll be back next Wednesday.

It's a tired question but do you think I should play my WC? Currently I'm against it as I'll not be able to check it much over the next week but on the other hand, I have not had a good start (due to the Manchester teams making a mockery of their "difficult" fixtures) and am now 48pts behind my rival.

Here's my GW4 team with home players in CAPS:

    Given (Ruddy)
    BAINES Bosingwa S.Taylor J.Olsson (Brown)
    CAHILL JARVIS Brunt (Sinclair, Moses)
    DZEKO Suarez Bent

    Thanks in advance.

Knowing your last year rank, I believe u would make a lot with a WC team,=. I believe that u need to transfer some cash in that weak midfield IMO. I am pro early wild carding.

Ask your self do u believe in your team? If so that leave it until GW 5 or 7 latest for the second international break.

Bottom line, having no Utd cover is worrying stuff ATM. Did u have Dzeko before the GW 3 or u bought him now?

      Cheers,

Thanks mate. Already brought in Jarvis and Dzeko with my two freebies.

I do believe in my team. I'm not worried about the keepers (just play Given every match now), I like my defence, I like my attack, my midfield is worrying but I'd rather have funds up front than in midfield. I just wish I had United cover.

I have fund available and could easily do...
        Bent > Rooney
        OR
        Cahill > Young
        OR
        Sinclair > Silva/Nasri

All of which would require a 4pt hit now though.

Hold fire IT. Being away you'll miss out on a side-benefit of making money.
If you have the funds, swap Cahill for young, AFTER the internationals.
48 points is nothing in August.

Thanks Hector. I tend to agree. I don't actually think making money is one of my considerations, it never was last year. Anybody I brought in would have to go up twice and then I'd have to sell em.

I'm only worried about eventually being priced out of Young, Rooney, Silva and/or Nasri. Those 4 are the only players I'm really concerned about (thus far).

Who is likely to go up twice?

I'm going to save it. Chasing points isn't a good reason to use it. Look at Berbatov and his 5 goal bomb last year. Hernandez came in and took all of his gametime awaw.. I wonder, with all of City's strikers if Dzeko will keep seeing returns and/or 90 minutes of gametime on a regular basis...

Price changes. FPL simply states that prices will rise and fall based on popularity. Everything else we know about this aspect of the game is learnt from experience and analysis (for example a player will only rise by 0.1m). So technically, FPL could change this without notification, I'm not saying they will - just that they could.

There's a lot of advice given out around price changes as though it's fact and of course at this stage it's probably as good as, but don't be surprised if one day it all changes.
