Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek Ten

The countdown to Gameweek ten is underway, beginning with our regular rinse through the fixture list and Next Six Tickers to establish a view on the “Strength of Schedule” for the coming weeks.

The Strong

Tottenham

Harry Redknapp’s side rightly have top four ambitions and, with five wins in six, are showing the form to realise them. The fixture list suggests that Spurs can go on earning positive results and cement a top four position going into the Christmas programme. QPR visit the Lane next, with Villa and Bolton also rolling up in the next five Gameweeks.

While the Spurs defence remains ravaged by injuries to Ledley King, Michael Dawson and William Gallas, Redknapp’s attacking assets will surely come good against such opponents. Equally, trips to Fulham and West Brom could also offer profits.

If you’re struggling to squeeze in either Rafael Van der Vaart or Emmanuel Adebayor, there could be some merit in Tottenham’s lesser assets – Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and full-back Kyle Walker. Going into the month ahead without Spurs coverage looks risky.

Stoke

Tony Pulis’ side are hugely effective at the Britannia and, with three home matches in the next four, their prospects look strong for returns at both ends of the field.

Newcastle will provide the sternest of tests this coming weekend and this will be a good barometer for Fantasy managers to judge the potential on offer. If the Stoke back four can keep a confident Newcastle at bay, we will surely see stronger investment in the likes of Ryan Shawcross and even budget full-back Andy Wilkinson.

A trip to Bolton follows the Magpies test, with favourable home clashes against QPR and Blackburn in Gameweeks 12 and 13. Following that, things toughen up once again for the Potters. Short-term investment in the Stoke defence, particularly when the bigger sides are scrapping around for clean sheets, looks a wise option.

Sunderland

The three points at Bolton will surely inject confidence into the Sunderland camp and with Nicklas Bendtner firing goals and Stephane Sessegnon back in a more effective wide role, Steve Bruce may well have a combination which can help sustain a run of form.

Certainly the fixture list is kind to them. Three home games in four serve up matches against Villa, Fulham and Wigan – all of which Bruce will surely be looking to win. The trip to Old Trafford will clearly be a major test and potential Fantasy blank but, around that, there’s little doubt that the Black Cats deserve our attention. A cheeky punt on Bendtner or Sessegnon could provide a handy differential.

Wigan

An encouraging display at St James’ Park at the weekend leads the Latics into a four gameweek spell which has them face Fulham and Blackburn at home, with trips to Wolves and Sunderland. If Wigan are to drag themselves out of the relegation mire, these matches will surely be vital in turning their season around.

Roberto Martinez has called for optimism, insisting that better results are just around the corner; when you look at the next four opponents, the potential for goals is clearly strong. However, Fantasy managers will be hugely skeptical as to whether these will be delivered and whether low-to-mid price assests like Victor Moses, Ben Watson and Hugo Rodallega can offer returns.

Also consider…

Arsenal – Disregard the trip to Stamford Bridge this weekend and Arsene Wenger’s men continue a favourable run of opponents from Gameweeks 11 through to 15, including three more encouraging Emirates encounters.

Man United – A backlash from the 6-1 hammering to City will be expected at Goodison this weekend and, following that, United embark on a run which should see the goals flow and even clean sheets restored.

The Weak

Newcastle

Alan Pardew’s side are about to provide a rigid test of the form vs fixtures argument. There’s little doubt that Newcastle will go into the next five Gamekweeks with confidence flowing through the squad – whether than can continue to translate into points and Fantasy returns remains to be seen. Aside from a home clash with Everton, it’s difficult to see where Newcastle’s next points will come from, right up until the trip to Norwich in Gameweek 15.

The visit to the Britannia comes next, to face a Stoke side notoriously resolute and determined in front of their own fans. This gives way to the Gameweek 11 encounter with Everton, a vital interlude that precedes trips to both City and United, before Chelsea visit St James’ Park. Clean sheets look very unlikely during that spell, while the likes of Demba Ba, Leon Best and Yohan Cabaye will surely struggle to add to their goal tallies.

QPR

Neil Warnock’s side stumbled over the line against 9-man Chelsea on Sunday but will take heart from claiming a precious three points from their local rivals. However, trips to Spurs and Stoke, with a home clash with City sandwiched in between, offers an evil run of three gameweeks to take Rangers into December.

Those Fantasy managers clinging to Shaun Wright-Phillips, Joey Barton or even Adel Taarabt, should consider their options. Warnock’s back four, while cheap, also look unlikely to be returning points for a few weeks.

Be wary of…

Wolves – A battling second-half comeback will give Mick McCarthy something to work with, having suffered five straight defeats prior to Saturday’s 2-2 with Swansea. The fixture list is staked against him however, with a trip to City this weekend just the first of four away games in six which also take Wolves to Everton, Chelsea and United. Points and Fantasy returns look scarce.

Chelsea –If you’re looking to clear some funds to make way for Tottenham acquisitions, your Chelsea assets could be leading candidates for sacrifice. The fixture list is against them, with Arsenal, Liverpool, City and a trip to Newcastle all coming up in the next six Gameweeks.

Liverpool – While a trip to the Hawthorns may offer promise in the short term, once the Anfield clash with Swansea has passed, Kenny Dalglish’s side faces a run of three gameweeks that see them take on Chelsea, City and a trip to Fulham – Luis Suarez will need goals before Gameweek 12, otherwise heavy sales will surely be on the cards.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Was thinking of doing

    De Laet > Wilkinson
    Sturridge > Balotelli

4 point hit. Would give me:

    Ruddy-Given
    Boswingwa-Jones-Simpson-Wilkinson-Enrique
    Silva-VDV-Brunt-Ramsey-M Petrov
    Rooney-Suarez-Balotelli

I still don't have the guts to get Balotelli (rotation risk, past petulance), but if you want a little punt, looks profitable.

Looks alright that, you have to worry about city striker rotation although given his current form I dont see much risk to Balotelli

I think Suarez to Adebayor after the Swansea game is a pretty easy transfer decision. Happy I got VDV in, but then most of the known universe seems to have done that as well. Ach well.

Very similar to my team, where I had Barton and Young and got rid for VDV and Walters.
Am waiting a week to then get rid of Bowingwa to Shawcross or De Laet to Wilkinson (if he plays 90 mins this weekend)

It's a good side but, both Taylor and Simpson are unlikely to help you much in the coming weeks (see Frisking) - I'd consider an exit plan on at least one of them (particular as you have Krul too) otherwise you'll be playing Barnett every week .

It looks good...DeLaet for Wilkinson could be worth considering. I'd also look at Bosingwa closely. He's a bargain in the Chelsea defence but that's a defence with just one cleanie and, as we mention above, a very tough schedule. Could you use his funds to upgrade Petrov/Dyer/Johnson?

Well I was saying I was 60% sure Simpson would start people panicking because he was subbed against Spurs was daft, but my point all along has been that Santon is a threat to both of them. So when he signed I swapped Simpson for S.Taylor who was worth the extra 0.5.
I honestly dont know when Santon will break into the team, could be next week or next month. He will eventually come in though.

    Thoughts on these moves:

Bosingwa, Mata & Moses -> Wilkinson, Walters & VDV

    Gives:

    Given Ruddy
    Kompany Wilkinson Simpson Gabbidon Naylor
    Nani VDV Walters Sinclair Petrov
    Rooney Adebayor Suarez

    Pros:
Getting in 3 players with form & fixtures and getting a midfield where i can play any of them rather than being hampered with Moses! Leaves me with 0.5 in the bank to maybe do Sinclair to Ramsey next week.

    Cons:
Very cheap defense with Kompany plus 4 x 4m players but their is a lack of cleanies around.
    No City attacking coverage.

Good effort. 🙂 We can be smug when he scores his inevitable hattrick 😉

I have Silva, but he's going on my WC for Nani i think. I'm 1.1 short of my ideal team, so i'll need to downgradesomewhere. Are you keeping your WC? I need to make too many changes so i'm using mine I think.

yeh definitely keeping. as i have the majority of the 'wanted' players at the moment it seems silly to use it to sort my defence out when the reality is that wont get me that many extra points, rather save it for jan n maybe hit a double week with it using them back-to-back

Seems fair, the only players i'm keeping are vdv vp simpson & moses

              Ive potentially got

              nani moses drethe silva brunt
              vp rooney bendtner

as i said 1.1 short, any ideas what to do? looking at

              begovic - vorm
              or
              rooney - hernandez

Is anyone tempted to take a look at Gervihno if your budget cannot stretch to RVP, he looked pretty dangerous against Stoke and you’d imagine he’ll only get better.

I was thinking of maybe him joining Aguerro and Ade upfront..

I've had him in my Sky squad for two weeks and despite the ten negative responses I got when asking, he's been a good performer. I might've been lucky on timing but with Arsenal's resurgence in form he's a good second to RVP for my money. RVP's been captained on my FPL squad though and I can't say I regret it.

Aguero is the one I'd worry about for the next two games; with Villareal slap-bang in the middle of two easy matches he's their most likely candidate for a rest.

That's a fine looking team to me, although both Agbongo/Studge may prove a little weak in future. I'd be thinking about finding cash to put Ade in my side, he's a season keeper for me bar injury. Perhaps you don't want to double AV at the back, but maybe you do, it's a reasonable tactic.

My thoughts exactly. I'd shift Sturridge and keep Agbonlahor if I was getting Manu in but it's tough to see where the cash would come from... unless you want to gamble on shipping out Enrique for a 4.0. Which isn't too bad an idea looking at the upcoming fixtures, there are some budget options with great games (Figueroa? Wilkinson?).

I like your team, except Dzeko. Hernandez seems a big rotation/bench risk for the money as a target, especially since Welbeck is getting a lot of games; I prefer Torres or maybe Gervinho. Drenthe is a good bet for Dyer and strengthening the defence a little couldn't go amiss (I'll continue to plug Assou-Ekotto every chance I get) but overall it looks solid to me.

Brown has good 3 in 4 fixtures - keep.
Rooney - has a good next 11 fixtures depending on how you view Everton (I'd keep)
Wouldn't get Lescott in - Kompany is more nailed on and Richards is more attacking.

All in all you have a good case for wildcarding I just question some of your choices for ins and outs.

Not sure about Dyer but it looks solid apart from that. I'd downgrade Kompany/Enrique (Walker/BAE?) and upgrade one to someone like Drenthe or Sessegnon but I like a light defence given how big teams aren't guaranteeing this season clean sheets.

What's crazy is how cheap your midfield is and how expensive you defense is. Downgrade at least 2 defenders and beef up the midfield. I'd get rid of Cahill and Terry. Buy some cheaper options like Stoke and Newcastle cover. Then get rid of Moses and buy a contender like VdV, also I'd switch O'Hara to Drenthe/Murphy/Larsson/Ramsey

No penalty, just trade one defender out this week and one the next, and then beef up the midfield. Make sure you have at least 3 decent fixtures for your defense this week when you get rid of either Cahill or Terry.
