Technical Area

The Technical Area- Rooney Drops Deeper at Everton

The 6-1 home hammering at the hands of Man City has clearly had an effect. Humbled in front of their own fans, with Sir Alex Ferguson describing it as the “worst result in my history”, United’s line-up for last weekend’s trip to Goodison raised more than a few eyebrows.

The role assigned to Wayne Rooney will have many a Fantasy manager fretting. With Fergie seeking extra solidity, Rooney dropped into central midfield, allowing Javier Hernandez to lead the line as the lone frontman but, ahead of a favourable run of fixtures, it’s the last thing his Fantasy owners want to contemplate. Tonight’s Champions League line-up against Otelul Galati will only further deepen the concern, with Rooney once again selected in the United midfield, with Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov leading the line. We take a look at Rooney’s last two league games to see just how they differ:

Average Position

A look at Rooney’s average position in the City game (above) shows Rooney’s (10) tendency to drop deep, even when United play 4-4-2. With City so much in control, though, Danny Welbeck (19) was also deep- both Ashley Young (18) and Nani (17) stayed high and wide and with a far from compact shape, United were torn apart by their clinical opponents.

The Everton match (above) shows Rooney was, on average, in an almost identical position when in possession, despite his new midfield role. The main difference, though, is how this compares in relation to the team mates around him. There is no width, no players further forward- Hernandez (14) dropped deep when on the ball and is obscured by Rooney (10) here. United’s defence-minded outlook offered little ahead of Rooney for him to make any significant attacking contribution.

Passing

Against City, Rooney made a total of 57 passes. A look at the chalkboard again shows how he came deep to link with the midfield, with 47% of all passes coming in the middle of the central third of the pitch. Remarkably, this is almost identical to the Everton match; here, Rooney also makes 57 passes, with 49% coming in the same area.

It’s when you look at the other areas of the field that the difference is more substantial; against City, for example, 28% of Rooney’s passes were from positions on the flank. With Young and Nani providing plenty width, he had far less a tendency to move from the centre in comparison to his display at Goodison- 38% of his distribution came from the wings against David Moyes’ side as he sought space in order to make an impact.

The most significant area for Rooney, though, the centre of the final third, shows a definite decrease in attacking potential over the two games. Against City, 22% (13% + 4% + 5%) of Rooney’s passes came in this vital area as he prompted and probed, looking for openings- against Everton, Rooney’s impact in this crucial part of the field halved, down to 11% (7% +4%). With Fergie reining in his star forward’s attacking sensibilities, their potency clearly diminished.

A look at United’s preferred passing in each game is also instructive. Against City, Rooney received 15 passes from Welbeck- the most balls from any team mate- and played 6 passes to his fellow-forward- a total of 21 passes between the United frontmen.

In the Goodison game, though, it was a different matter; Rooney received more passes (7) from Jonny Evans than any other United player, with Phil Jones and Patrice Evra next best on 6; an indication of how deep he dropped to gain possession at times. Ahead of him, Rooney barely linked up with Hernandez at all; he played just 2 successful passes to the Mexican, receiving 3 in return. Compare that to the interplay with Welbeck against City, and there’s a definite drop in attacking intent.

Match Stats

Post-match, Fergie explained the thinking behind his decision to move Rooney back:

It’s about time we won 1-0. That was the aspect of the game that pleased me most, that and restricting Everton to very few chances. We had to do something about the fact that opponents have been getting too many opportunities to score against us in recent weeks. We knew we had to reduce that number if we are going to win the league, and reinforcing the midfield was one way of doing it. We brought Wayne back to increase our numbers in midfield.

Perhaps a look at the statistics will make the United boss think twice, though. In no way did his side restrict Everton’s chances: over the season so far, they have averaged 19 shots against per game- on Saturday, Everton fired in 19 goal attempts again. If anything, his tactics only had a detrimental effect on his own side’s endeavors going forward- United have averaged 16 shots per game so far this season, whereas at Goodison last weekend, they mustered 7 all game.

Indeed, David De Gea saved more shots (8) than United managed over the entire ninety minutes. From a central midfield position, Rooney had just 1 shot against his old club- not what you’d want from a 12.2 Fantasy prospect, particularly with the likes of Robin Van Persie tearing up the top-flight right now.

Clearly, Fergie holds no fears of utilising Rooney in a different role if he feels it’s beneficial to the team as a whole- a spell out wide a couple of seasons back proves testament to that. The uncertainty has clearly had an effect- so far, Rooney has been sold on by 72,000 Fantasy managers this week, despite a home clash with Sunderland up next. Tonight’s performance will give his 41% of Fantasy owners plenty to mull over- another game from deep without any attacking rewards could cause many to rethink over the forthcoming international break.

Sitting in the top 25k but this means nothing to me. It's the money leagues and side bets and in these the lead looks fragile.

    Krul,
    Enrique, Simpson, Brown
    Walters, Ramsey, VDV, Silva
    Rooney, Ade, Balotelli

    Vorm, Tchoyi, Shawcross, Kompany

1 free and half a mil.

For this GW I doubt Balotelli will play many minutes after getting so much game-time last night. Aguero looks a cert to start but maybe on his own or with Dzeko.

You could remove all doubt and replace him with Suarez (not a good long term move though)

Or you could do Roon>RVP. At least until you're sure Roon isnt being played as a CM anymore and has hit a bit of form again. Plus RVP is on fire right now with equally tasty fixtures as Roon

I’m in a dilemma here. I’m an ardent Man Utd fan, and I’ve got both Rooney and Nani in my fantasy squad, since the beginning of FPL this season; and I was quite happy with. But with both aggregating dismal points in the last three games, as compared with their counter parts(with the same price tag); my fantasy rank sunk considerably. I was not bothered though as the fixture list was tough, but looking at Everton’s match, Rooney played very deep and Nani came off the bench. The freaking rapture trumpets are sounding and it’s worrying times for me, to say the least.

What do you say, should I stick with them(as the fixture list looks easy), or Should I go the Van Persie(whose fixture list is also easy) route as like everyone. And in regard with Nani, should I dump him and bring in Mata(as he’s the only Chelsea player to be consistent) or Adam (as Gerrard is injured and the path looks even clearer). Please do suggest, I’m pulling my hair out, as well as anyone near me…?

One more thing, I'd like to push out James Collins and bring in Andy Wilkinson.
        James Collins(NOR (H)) --> Andy Wilkinson(BOL (A)).
Whom do you think would have a greater chance of a clean sheet...?

I'm also a Man Utd fan and I say Rooney out sharpish. In my personal opinion it's madness to have your most expensive player who's a striker playing in CM. He also seems to have lost the form that he had not 4/5weeks ago.

RVP is on fire with great fixtures and rising quickly. Jump aboard

Swansea need to start learning to pick up wins away from home, but overall there are probably 3 worse teams in this years Prem than the 3 who've just come up.

My worry for Norwich is that they don't appear capable of keeping clean sheets. At some point in this league you have to grit out 1-0 wins or a fee 0-0's if you're going to survive.

Norwich still remind me of Blackpool and they had a flying start but over the second half of last season their defensive fragility found them out.

QPR know their biggest issues are a consistent Prem league level striker and central defensive reinforcement. Fernandes and Warnock have both confirmed the club will be buying players in January to fill those needs.

As it is most people were expecting us to be in the bottom 3 after we played Man City. Already, that can't now happen courtesy of the Chelsea result. Considering the injuries we've had so far, if we can stay out of the bottom 3 between now and Xmas then I'm sure we'll be fine, especially as we've shown we can win on the road and keep clean sheets.

I suggest getting rid of all those lame self-coined attempt-to-be-cutesy nicknames and getting some real players.

Barnett, Enrique, Van der Vaart and Silva are pretty cool picks atm. I know 4 transfers will mean a points hit, but it's worth it for changing pukeworthy names to players who're likely to not annoy anyone across the next few weeks.

You could wildcard, too, your cruel and milkman references are so obscure I for the life of me couldn't figure out which team they play for. Get rid immediately, get some proper players.

here's my team lads. thinkin i should save my transfer. open to other options though(selling price in brackets)
    Vorm
    Bosingwa(5.9) Simpson Enrique
    Silva Nani(10) VDV Petrov(5.8)
    Suarez Sturridge(6.7) Aguero(c)
    0.1 in bank
    Ruddy Moses Brown Kompany

Happy with my entire team except the ones in brackets.. saving 2 transfers fro the international break and to monitor sturridge nani etc this gameweek..

    Captain dilema....

    Lampard (away blackburn)
    VDV (away fulham)
    RVP (wba home)
    Silva (qpr away)
    or Rooney (sunderland home)

I wanna go with RVP, but keep thinking he cant keep scoring...or can he lol

      but the RvP doesn't have a bandwagon for nothing: 5, 13, 2, 12, 11, 19 in the last 6 weeks.

of course, it could go pear shaped this week but with ARS at home to WBA, it's too tempting to resist.

could be. but on the other side, ARS look very average without RvP.

he's their talisman at the moment. when he plays, the rest play OK too.

Absolutely raked in the points last year while they were losing/drawing games and sliding down the table.

When they struggle with lesser teams, it won't be 1-0 defeats, it'll be more like 2-2 draws (see Blackburn for instance),and RVP will still have a chance of being amongst the points.

for someone not taking advice, you're doing better than me.

your bench looks a bit like an A&E though. needs sorting to tighten up your MID.

Morning all......used to be on here a lot in the mornings but not so for about a year and a half!

Anyway, TERRIBLE start is slowly being dealt with....tempted by

    Moses/Dyer to Cleverley

Anyone else tempted by this youngster?

(Bos must go soon too but can wait one more week I think...)

Played 55 of last game and they said he should be fine....I can see him being a bargain.

So key to the way Man U play already, v cheap Man U coverage and if fit he should start...unlike Young/Nani. Rooney too deep atm....although I have cash saved to grab him or Aguero if Suarez still annoys!

Hi folks, posted about this yesterday but didn't get much feedback.

Probably a lot of people are sitting on a Given + Vorm combo and looking to shift Given after GW11.

There are a few options, with the main ones being:

    1. Get an expensive keeper e.g. De Gea, Friedel or Howard (especially rotates well with Vorm for a few weeks)

    2. Save a bit of money and get Robinson, who also rotates well with Vorm for a while

    3. Get Ruddy, who doesn't rotate at all with Vorm and just play Vorm every week

    4. Make 2 transfers and get a rotating pair of keepers (which may mean doubling up on a couple of teams in the defensive department as I may already have cover in the rest of my back 5)

Option 1 looks like a good choice, especially Howard and I can see quite a few clean sheets in GW12-18/20. I could probably use the extra money on my midfield though to be honest. Is it worth the extra cash over option 3? With option 3 it's just resigning to whatever Vorm gets and hoping it's not too much less that a good keeper combo.

Then there's option 2, a half-way punt, although Blackburn don't exactly look great for clean sheets, although they rotate quite nicely fixture-wise. Is it worth going half way or just going all (Howard) or nothing (Ruddy)?

Option 4 is also an option with Sunderland/Wolves, Sunderland/Blackburn and Sunderland/Newcastle rotating reasonably well. Despite the good rotation, I don't think those combinations are worth the money and extra transfers, especially since Sunderland/Newcastle is the only one looking to be a good bet clean-sheet-wise.

I would love to hear your opinions in exchange for the info!

I have been thinking option 1 for a while but the lack of CS all round has put me off a little. The question I keep asking myself is will this change in the next few GW so is it worth it... I think it just might so am looking at moving out Given to one of the above also... The problem is I have other trfs planned beforehand

It's a big gamble though, especially if you get De Gea! Plus with the funds maybe being the difference between a Dyer/Moses and a midfielder around 6m, or fitting in an extra big gun int he attacking 8, it could be better spent up front. But who knows?!

No don't get an expensive gk.

Have you considered Vorm and Kenny who rotate well? Reasonable home form as well.

Yeah I have looked at this, although for the extra .5m over Ruddy, you would only get 2 more favourable home games (GW14 & 17) in the short-term. I can't decide if that's worth it!

Kenny has had 2 clean sheets in 5 home games so far, one coming against 9-men Chelsea (although arguably still impressive).

Perhaps a better option over Robinson though...

Yeah I wouldn't even play Ruddy to be honest, just Vorm every week. I'm starting to like the look of Kenny/Vorm though, even if it is only for GWs 14, 17 & 20 (and 22 if I haven't WCed by then)

I might wait until GW14 and see how QPR, Everton and Blackburn do defensively in GW12 & GW13.

I'm strongly considering swapping Given for Westwood. Already have a Newcastle def and Vorm. I may give it till January and then downgrade eg: Jones to get in a pricier keeper. Until then, allows me to have Kompany, Jones, Enrique, Simpson, Wilkinson. Safe enough till Jan.

Westwood is good for GW12 but then the rest of his good fixtures coincide with Vorm's good fixtures (i.e. they don't rotate well).

I prefer Kenny at the moment or perhaps, if I don't need the money elsewhere, Howard. I'll just get Ruddy if I need the money to upgrade Petrov though!

Thanks for the info on the well rotating goalies but I cant see myself using 2 transfer for swapping out keepers, probably later in the December wc.

    1. Do you think its better this week to do De Laet>Wilkinson or Bos>Jones/Evans? It bugs me that I’m short 0.1m to do De Laet>Evans

    2. Who would be the better Sunderland coverage to get? Sess or the best strikor in the world? Anyone know who’s on pen for them?

Wilkinson would be a good bet but I guess you can't expect much from Stoke defenders in GW11 (EL tie, away match). Maybe it could wait a week?

I've had Sess for ages and he's been great for me the last couple of GWs. I say Sess, but I'm biased on that front. Bendy could be a good shout though!

you know, i think he might lose it a bit this week.

i can imagine he's also frustrated with his current role. he's a forward and he's hungry.

if he does play as a forward against SUN, i can see him wanting to get a goal within 30 seconds to make a point and if he doesn't get it, i can see him getting more frustrated by the minute.

i can also see him getting wound up by the SUN players (who'll love the chance to take the p*ss about his recent form).

Considering doing Wildcard for International break because I’m away from Dec 8th to January 3rd and won’t be able to manage team while away.

    So this is plan:
    Given>Westwood
    Bosingwa>Wilkinson
    De Laet>Evans J
    Orr>Rangel
    Murphy>Eagles
    Dyer>Johnson
    Agbon>Aguero

Keeping: Suarez, RVP, Silva, Vorm, Simpson, Ramsey, VDV

Leave 0.3 in the bank, can't get Rooney instead of Aguero without downgrading VDV or Silva

Any thoughts comments would be appreciated. Or should I save Wildcard?

It's hard to predict when he finds his form. When he does he's a great player to have in your team. I'm a big fan of his FPL-wise (had him last season as well) but I got rid last week and I'm hoping he doesn't hit form to be honest.

He has great short-term fixtures (GW12 onwards) but average mid-term fixtures. You'd be relying on him hitting form short-term really.

My view on Wayne Rooney (biased as i’ve held onto him for his 1-2 point run): Lots of talk about ‘not being worth 12m and playing in midfield’. While i agree that i’d prefer to see him leading the line (and expect him to do so in the not so distant future) – it might not be the end of the world if he plays there vs. SUN.
-will see more of the ball
    -will likely get forward anyway
-still on pennas, attacking FKs (i hope!)
    -could see more ‘assist’ chances
-we never used to mind paying 11-12m for MFs like Lampard, Gerrard etc. (ok, they get one extra point per goal)

And a point for a clean sheet. Playing reverse OOP is not good. Plus it uses up one of only 3 forward berths as opposed to 1 of 5 mids.

I'm holding on to him in some game formats, but happy to go without in FPL.

Rooney will regain form and be amongst the goals again very soon I think. I'm definately keeping him (albeit have brought in RVP too). Nani, on the other hand has been struggling a bit for gametime and that is very worrying.

I had to sell one this week and chose to sell Nani for that reason.

The trouble is with Rooney is that he's in a striker berth. So his goals are worth 1pt less (like you mentioned) and he doesnt get the 1pt cleanie either.

Not sure I agree with your point that his assist chances will increase either. His chances of assisting the assister will rise considerably though.

I think it's a mistake, especially when RVP is in such a rich vein of form.

I'll be ready to get back on Rooney as and when he is back playing upfront and looks in decent form

Morning all, feedback most welcome on the following conundrum.

Each of Boswinga, Ramsey, Silva & Anderson started in midweek ECL games. Kompany is suspended this weekend, Silva came off injured and Wenger said Ramsey 'was tired'. Anderson was dreadful. Again. There is the possibility that Silva & Ramsey are rotated and Anderson gets omitted from the team altogether (again). That scenario leaves me with no one whatsoever on the bench.

Have considered Boswinga > either Wilkinson or Evans all week but with ShawX injured on MNF and a doubt, Evans looks a better bet to earn a cleanie this weekend (though not by much!). To ensure I have someone on the bench would I be better of dumping Kompany and bringing in someone with good fixtures?

I am already have to play Ward in defence despite the fact Wolves leak like a sieve alongside S. Taylor. N. Taylor is my only other defender and I have now doubt 1 or even 0 pts is likely this weekend. If I sell Bosingwa should I get someone 100% certain to play and who offers either a good run of fixtures or some kind of attacking threat as a like-for-like change or go for the cheapie with limited appeal this weekend? Bosingwa at Blackburn at least offers attacking potential...

Would I be absolutely mad in considering Andre Santos for Kompany and retaining Bosingwa to play him instead of Ward? Kieron Gibbs has been out a few weeks and Santos, though his defending is sometimes comically bad, has a great run of fixtures, is brilliant going forward and based on 2 cleanies in ECL games recently has luck on his side (a bit like the similarly defensively challenged Evans who also looks bad at times but gets cleanies)? With V-man now back I think they might be turning the corner in defence but Jenkinson doesn't appeal half as much as Santos.

    Choices:
    a) Bosingwa > Wilkinson and pocket £2m
    b) Bosingwa > Evans and pocket £1.5m
    c) Kompany > Santos, gain nothing but have a chance of goals and assists v WBA
    d) Suffer from paralysis by over-analysis, do nothing, cross my fingers and hope there's no rotation!
    e) Something else!

    Thoughts?

Bosingwa and Ramsey have been pretty rotation proof around CL fixtures. And both represent great season-long value. Silva is the player of the PL so far. Get someone better for Anderson. If all three of Silva, Bosingwa and Ramsey don't contribute, you can count yourself pretty unlucky.

Personally I'm considering dropping Silva this week. I reckon he's a pretty high risk after the back problem, and I need funds to get RVP in. I have other attacking City cover and I could still afford to buy him back for VDV if I need to.

Silva missing out would be lovely, and if Rooney wants to score a midfield hat-trick that's fine by me. 😉

Silva didn't looks too good last night and I'm certain he won't start at the weekend.

Let's just hope people don't suddenly start knee jerking and shipping him out over the Int Break.

Unless he's flagged then I hope he won't drop in price at all.

if you're planning to keep him long-term then it wouldnt make a difference what price he drops to would it?

        You just never know though.

It's always a plus for him not to drop, just in case your plans change.

Plus it makes it easier for others to get him in.

A price drop, or two, for Silva would go down a treat. 😛
