The Digest – Gameweek Twelve

Tottenham bring Gameweek 12 to a close, sparing Aston Villa a spanking but throwing Fantasy managers options from all angles. Elsewhere, a pre-season certainty returned to form in timely fashion, reviving an option that had previously seemed irresistible…

The Player

While Yakubu and Heidar Helguson pulled a brace apiece out of the hat to provide further budget considerations up front, it was Leighton Baines’ points haul that handed Fantasy managers maximum food for thought.

Going into the season, Baines looked nailed-on for our lineups. Five goals and 11 assists last season, following on from 9 in 2009/10, the Everton left-back was delivering the returns of a mid-price midfielder, with the opportunity to throw in the occasional clean sheet. With Mikel Arteta’s departure to the Emirates, Baines was also installed as the Goodison penalty taker – surely a factor that would seal the deal?

Yet Baines’ Fantasy stock gradually fell as the gameweeks passed. Everton’s inability to claim clean sheets, compounded by key injuries and a run of opponents that limited their attacking potential, meant that the former Wigan man’s potential man dried up. Having claimed strong initial ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, we witnessed heavy sales and a price drop from 8.0 to 7.8.

However, the theories thrown around at the start of the season should remain fresh in our minds. We explored matters further in last week’s Monitor article – all the statistical signposts pointed to a turn in fortunes – and so it proved.

Baines, at his best when Everton have some form, is effectively an immensely effective winger with set-piece command and the added potential of clean sheets. For 7.8 that seems a fair deal – when you consider Everton’s fixtures hand them opponents that give them a fair crack of building on Saturday’s win, suddenly his acquisition continues to make sense all over again. The problem now is finding the funds – it all seemed so easy back in August.

The Team

Back in gameweek 10, The Digest sang the praises of Harry Redknapp’s side, emphasising the wealth of attacking talent open to Fantasy managers. Just a couple of gamweeks on and, while Harry’s been under the surgeon’s knife, little has changed in terms of his team’s potential.

Last night’s 2-0 win over a Villa side, who seemingly turned up at White Hart Lane to frustrate and contain, should have been more emphatic. Tottenham’s midfield conjured opportunities, the pace of Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon tormented Alex McLeish’s bewildered full-backs, while Emmanuel Adebayor found his scoring touch after a recent drought.

Defensively, Tottenham also look composed. Admittedly, Villa posed little threat but with Ledley King restored to the heart of the back-four, Redknapp’s side were more resolute and showed every indication that, as mid-price defensive assets go, they are worthy of consideration. Full-backs Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Kyle Walker stand out as the key options – two more considerations within a Tottenham squad that remains buoyant and brimming with Fantasy profit.

The Talking Point

Which brings us nicely to the talking point. Gareth Bale’s performance last night took him to 3 assists and 3 goals in his last three gameweeks. Seven bonus points have inevitably followed in a spell that has seen him suddenly emerge as a consistent Fantasy performer.

We spoke at length about his potential in last week’s Monitor article – our Members will have seen plenty of evidence in that article which pre-empted last night’s assist returns. The theory is that Bale is a different animal this season; his form and display last night only added further evidence to support that view.

The issue for Fantasy managers concerns the acquisition of Bale as an alternative to Rafael Van der Vaart. There can be no question that the Dutchman is a prime Fantasy asset – a playmaker who commands set-pieces and penalties, and a player who has scored 19 goals in the last year – a total bettered only by Robin Van Persie and Darren Bent.

Van der Vaart has drawn blanks in his last two outings, however, and, last night’s withdrawal on 68 minutes was the second consecutive game in which he’s been hauled off with over 20 minutes on the clock – the fourth time in six gameweeks.

With Jermain Defoe straining at the leash, this tactic of Redknapp’s seems set to continue, meaning that Van der Vaart will need to damage opponents and return Fantasy points in just over an hour per game. Bale, in comparison, is unquestionably a 90-minute man and looks immune to rest and rotation. With Cameroon failing to qualify for the African Cup of Nations, there’s also little chance that Bale will be forced to shift to left-back to cover for the loss of Assou-Ekotto, as he was on occasions last time round.

There’s a simple solution to the conundrum – draft in both Van der Vaart and Bale. This may jar at first but, had the Dutchman been classified as a forward, you could argue it would be a solution adopted without too much thought.

As it stands, Tottenham continue to have a run of favourable fixtures in front of them – a run that suggests that the wins and goals will go on flowing. Aside from David Silva and perhaps Frank Lampard, you can argue that there are currently few, if any midfielders, who offer the scoring potential of the Tottenham pair going into the New Year.

The Van der Vaart/Bale pairing is a Fantasy basket that appears to cradle all our eggs rather nicely.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Actually Scrap that.. this is my wildcard team.. just checked and pilkington and helguson rotate perfectly.. plus helguson on penos

    Vorm Ruddy
    Baines Enrique Jones/Richards Simpson Turner
    Vdv Silva Bale Walters Pilkington
    Rvp Adebayor Helguson

just gotta decide between Richards and Jones.. Richards seems the more nailed on and better attacker but got horrid fixtures

Jones gives me man utd cover though.. dont want anyone from their minefield of a midfield and dont want rooney.. however with smalling and rafael back jones wil be rotated heavily during christmas.. rest of my team filled with sure starters for that period however

It's difficult to rotate a striker with a mid IMO. Cos strikers can score almost any game.

I'm confident about the Helicopter! He'll be the talk of this forum in 2 weeks time.

at 5.2 and 5.4 helgo and pilks are perfect rotation fodder.. will start helgo for the next few weeks over pilks while he's on form though.. he's on penos too!! reminds me of odemwingie last year.. goin all out with 3 from spurs and baines in preparation for the double gameweek.. plus tottenham's fixtures are'nt bad.. and there are no real alternatives really

For the moment I'd go Jones. Utd seem to have tightened up (in league games at least) and Jones is making the RB spot his own with recent performances.

City just arent keeping cleanies this year

Richards is sooooo attacking though.. plus jones has smalling and rafael to compete with.. i could go for jones for the next 4 weeks while city have bad fixtures and gamble on richards not doing well.. can then get him in for jones.. scared jones may be dropped this weekend though after startin last night

He of course could be dropped but he's played the vast majority of games and I cant see that changing. Your subs will just have to cover the odd game he misses. He's also quite an attacking full-back with better fixtures.

mate, this is my (100 point) wc team from last week and it looks a lot like yours
      westwood vorm
      enrique baines wilko rtaylor richards
      silva vdv bale walters allen
      rvp ade morison

i went morison walters instead of pilks bentdner which paid off but pilks is the pick in norwich for me
      i say richards
ruddy is a good keeper but i wouldnt look at norwich defence despite his price
maybe westwood for next 4 weeks then krul in but you would have to bring in mcauley / ntaylor or the ultimate cheapie in rangel for turner unless you just doubled up on sund (worse things you could do)
westwood was my sund cover but i looked at brown/turner

no chelsea or manU didn't fill me with dread either

thank you for that reply:).. think i'll stick with it then.. could try and fit in aguero rooney etc.. but i'd rather a front 3 of rvp ade helgo over anyone.. richards is basically an attackin mid for 6.2 who can get clean sheets and is secured a startin role.. so will get him instead of jones.. will worry about manu and chelsea during the next wildcard:)

i shipped ruddy out on my wc but he's probably the best 4 mil keeper I spose
helguson is a good choice and pilks is this year's adam
            Good luck chief

Pilkington + Richards/Jones + Adebayor (if you have vdv and bale already)
            or
            Dyer + McAuley + Aguero

Aguero has bad fixtures and a do or die ucl game after the norwich one.. so is a risk.. triplin up on spurs could be a risk too.. which one? last question i promise

              ade in form
aguero is a weapon but rotation maybe?
I tried to squeeze in aguero too but after many days of tinkering it really comes down to one thing:
Do you want to drop baines for someone cheaper ? Then you can do what you want
              I went Baines
he's a set piece winger striker dressed up as a defender
the team you have WITH baines in it is as good as you can get
              ...and its pretty good

What to do with Suarez now that he is dropped? Worth punting for Studge for 2 weeks? Or hold on and hope he converts. Change would allow an upgrade of Moses to Sess, & Sess plays this GW ahead of Dyer for a -4?

    Currently:
    Westwood (Vorm)

    Naylor Wilko Jones (Simp/JE)

    Dyer VDV Silva Nani

    RVP Ade Suarez

    Thoughts greatly appreciated.

Any move that allows you to get rid of Moses is a great one. I had him up until the last GW and it feels great to not see him cluttering up my team.

I'm not sure about Sturridge though.

      I'd personally do Moses>Walters and Suarez>Bendy/Helguson

    Morning peeps

I'm thinking of sticking this week and saving the transfer for next week, unless there is an obvious transfer I've missed.

Not sure on who to bench though. Any suggestions?

    Westwood (Vorm)
    Jones Naylor Wilko Enrique Hibbert
    Silva VDV Walters Drenthe Eagles
    Aguero RVP Bendy

Who to bench? I'm thinking Enrique, Choppa & Drenthe

Get rid of Bos sharpish. He's not even playing and is pricey. Maybe for Jags/Choppa or a cheaper option to free up cash

Wouldnt take the 4pt hit though as a DF of:
Jones Naylor Brown (or Bos relacement) looks fine for this week

I almost did the same transfers, but decided to use 1/2 FT for only Nani > Bale as I think Mata might be more potential than Walters this week.

Just going through some average position maps of last weekend on soccernet.. here some observations
Baines was as far forward as cahill
Bale and VDV were ahead of Adebayor
Pilkington was very very far up the pitch
SWP was ahead of Helguson 🙂

It certainly has - cometh the hour, cometh the Baines.I'm currently toying with a four-pointer to do Woodgate > Baines this week ( Caveats applicable, of course ).

Baines vs that woeful Bolton defence just reeks of assists, free kicks, penalties and bonus points galore. Bolton may have to rename their stadium Treasure Island after the game.

Meh. As much as I'm a big admirer of Baines, Eve aren't keeping CS.

You'd need him to score/assist EVERY week to get returns. Do you really think he could do that?

7.8!! you dont expect Bale to get you points every week and he and baines were the same price.. penos and fee kicks along with a few cs's here and there and he'll be worth his weight in gold.. if he was 6.8 and classified as a mid ppl would buy him.. dont mind spendin a million more for clean sheets

Yeah, but there so many cheap defenders out there, who rotate well with each other & get you CS on a regular basis & score goals/assists here & there.

Having Baines undermines your value on the defense bench, since you play him every week.

I'd have definitely got him at 6.8 for a mid. But he isn't.

I'm a bit worried about my points total this week with having Silva and Aguero in there. Cant see them returning much against Pool at Anfield. The scousers always seem to up their game against the better sides too.

Not much any of us can do though. Neither are worth getting rid of at this stage

IMO the general feeling in the Chelsea camp is that Lamps should definitely play the easier games, cos that's when his loss of pace is inconsequential.

With his experience & vision, he can rip apart weak defences like Bolton, Norwich, Arsenal, etc.

Walters and as a second option Sessegnon. Drenthe is not proven yet, he has scored but could go dry, you never know it could be a risk. Everton is up in the air right now and Baines seems to be the only player who may show consistency due to his history.

Any suggestions on who to play and captain this week:

    Vorm (Al Habsi)
Jones, Brown, Ekotto (Shawcross 2nd sub, Enrique 3rd sub)
Lampard (VC), VDV, Walters, Sessegnon (Ramsey 1st sub)
    RVP (C), Adebayor, Bendtner

Free transferred Sessegnon this week, 681 points, 0.1 in the bank, 105.1 team value (102.5 real value) 18 total transfers, used wildcard on week 4.

I wish I had a team like this every week, the only player that is definitely not a starter is Enrique. I don't know if having Ramsey and Shawcross on the bench is wise. Captain RVP or Lampard?

I am currently sitting first in my country and lead by 9 points. I think I can really go ahead this week by a big difference so there is no room for mistakes. Any suggestions?

Cheers. Yeah, I was going to double on Stoke also, but that hasn't worked out that well so far, so have brought Jones in for Dunne and benched Woodgate. Subs correct?

Jinsi - see my Q upstairs...you not worried about ManU hitting form in gw15 vs Wolves?

I can't see myself going into gw18/19 with no Nani/Young/Chico/Pig.

I'm teeing up Aguero -> Chico or Rooney (form dependent) for GW15. Depending on whether he starts regularly (which I think he should), I may also double on their defence in Smalling.

Moses and Woodgate are stinking your otherwise very solid team out there.

As both areon the bench I'd save a transfer for next week to give you more room to manouvre.

It'scertainly not WC time for you 🙂

Good Morning gents. Can't make my mind up what to do with my team after a terrible week.

    Krul, Ruddy
Enrique, Ekotto, Taylor R, Tierney, Caulker
    Silva, Drenthe, Ramsey, Moses, Modric
    RVP, Rooney, Suarez.

Undecided whether to downgrade Rooney and upgrade Modric to Nani or to upgrade RTaylor to Baines and downgrade Modric to Allen?

I'm a little worried about not having any spurs cover in both the above, any other suggestions, as I can't afford the upgrade from Modric to Bale without freeing up .1 somewhere else, Grrrr!

Or do I have more serious problems?

Have 1 Ft and .1m in the bank.

Downgrade Rooney to Adebayor, You've probably been waiting to get rid of Moses so take a hit and get Larsson or Sessegnon. In the nest weeks you need to get better defenders than Tierney and Caulker, think Gabbidon and Brown. Also get rid of Ruddy and get a better rotation keeper.

Whoah.. just realised i can wildcard this team.. seems almost unbelievable!!
    Vorm Ruddy
    Baines Jones Richards Enrique Simpson
    Silva VDV Pilkington Walters Sessegnon
    RVP Adebayor Helguson

can play 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 dependin on fixtures.. very very temptin.. just excited about wildcard.. ignore if you gettin fedup of my rmt's:).. those attackin defenders all look good for 160 odd points over the season imo

dont really consider jones richards and baines as defenders.. more like attackers with clean sheets as bonus(they are soooooo attacking). gotta fix my team link.. will do it now.. will bench pilkington this week and play helguson while he's in form.. pilks and helgo rotate perfectly home and away

Well I'd say go with your gut, in that case. You wouldn't be able to build up on team value with a WC during the intl break anyways.

You wouldn't find a better time to invest in defence. Maybe downgrade Richards to Turner/BAE & upgrade Ruddy? Terrible fixtures for a CS/attacking points.

Looks really good. You should think about having a better rotation keeper instead of Ruddy. I am planning on getting Schwarzer. He will rotate really well with Vorm and that pairing will be good until the end of the season.

OK, so it's like this right now but how shold it be for GW13?

    Vorm,
    BAE, Enrique, Kompany
    Silva, Walters, Sess, Drenthe, VDV
    RvP, Ade

    Krul, Agbon, Wilko, Naylor

    Enrique > Wilko or Naylor?
    Walters > Agbon?

I wouldn't sell Enrique, absolutely no way. Liverpool have great fixtures apart from the two City games and 3 out of 4 at home over Christmas. Plus he's a Trojan and will start unless totally knackered.

i don't want to do the Enrique > Wilko or Naylor transfer.

i already have them and i just wondered if i should bench Enrique and play Naylor or Wilko.

    Champions league fantasy,

Ok here's the situation, I had Giggs in my starting line-up and Frei as first sub who had 8 points. I subbed out Jones (who got 2 points) for a Valencia defender who was 2nd sub, so then when I clicked confirm changes, Frei went to the second position on the bench, leaving Jones with his 2 points in the first position, primed and ready to replace Giggs!!!

    dammit.

Approaching the weekend I will probably do Rooney/Woodgate ➡ Aguero/Wilkinson for 4 pts

realise both can be somewhat sideways, but its to avoid another 0.2 loss

    sound?

I reckon Chubby Islander will be watching form my stands until RVP, Aguero or Adebayor goes off the boil.

Helgie is a good shout indeed, but I think it might be a mistake to fill a striker slot (and a half) with him at the moment. It does free up money for Baines however.

        Hmmm.
